US SAILING developed this book in partnership with the American Red Cross to help you become a more confident and accomplished sailor. Start Sailing Right is a fantastic primer for anyone with an urge to get out on the water - and a reference guide for a lifetime. It offers one practical, usable tip after another and profuse use of large, clear diagrams, making sailing understandable and putting the new sailor at ease.
Don't remember where I came across this book, but decided to read it because, living in a coastal city, many of my friends enjoy sailing, and I'd like to understand a little more of what they're talking about. This book is designed to be used alongside of hands-on sailing instruction (which I am not doing), but I thought it was very well organized, with clear, simple explanations of lots of different concepts, and copious illustrations that aid in understanding. I know it's pretty old, so I'm not sure how much of it might be out of date. Definitely the page that says your local radio or TV/cable stations are the best places to check for weather information. But beyond that, I'm guessing most of the information should be relatively timeless--and anyway, if you're actually learning to sail, you should also be getting live instruction from others who can tell you about any other information that's been updated.
