My least favorite by Penelope Williamson, but that's saying a lot! Compared to her later romances the romance, passion, and angst in this early offering isn't as intense—the tone could be compared to that of a YA book—but it's still well-written and enjoyable.

4 and ½ Stars! WINGS OF DESIRE – A Romantic Flight Across Early 20th Century America

I am a huge fan of Penelope Williamson and so after reading her amazing novels like KEEPER OF THE DREAM and THE PASSIONS OF EMMA, I had to get her whole back list. This romance is one of the early ones and I'd bet it was on her shelf of "first books" when it was published under another pen name in the same year as HEARTS BEGUILED. I say all this because this one, while a most worthy read, is not the sweeping, heart rending saga that she became known for.

It's set in Virginia (initially) in 1919 and tells the story of a young woman, Cassandra (Cassie) Jones, who at 19 is an accomplish pilot and a staunch advocate of a woman's right to vote. She is a heroine we can all identify with as she struggles against a past that tells her love is not to be trusted even while her heart wants to give itself to the handsome WWI war hero and ace pilot Linc Cameron.

Linc knows what he wants and he wants Cassie so he is happy to accommodate her with marriage when the race officials for the flight across America require her to be wed in order to be Linc's co-pilot. She agrees only to wed him for the duration of the race, but then she finds herself falling in love with the man--and someone is trying to sabotage their plane.

It's a wonderful look at America in the early 20th century and the spirit of a nation recovering from WWI and growing into its own. I loved this heartwarming love story and think you will, too. I give it 4 and 1/2 stars and not 5 only in comparison with her other novels.
