Great techniques and tips here on taking your colored pencils to the next level. His realistic renderings of almost any subject were fantastic. My only criticism would be that he seems to draw from photographs, in some cases tracing them out with velum over the photograph first, which is okay, but I think for me that would feel a bit like I didn't access my own creativity or maybe rather that I haven't honed my own skills in proportion or composition. Whatever, it wasn't that big of a deal, and I think it happens a lot in modern art. In no way does it overshadow Greene's sheer talent. His perception of shadow, texture and color is superb and the book is filled with tips and tutorials. Great read.
I learned a lot about the pencils themselves but most of the book focused on the different sorts of solvents that can be used with wax and oil based pencils to emulate watercolor painting - turps, isopropyl alcohol, vodka, mineral spirits, etc.
Wish the title had been more specific - first, there are many other books entitled "Creative Colored Pencil" and since I'm not really interested in using solvents (except for alcohol) I would have passed this up if I had been buying the book. Luckily, it was borrowed from the library!
Enjoyed reading and the artwork. However, it just reinforced that I am not a coloured pencil person. Not a beginner book, you need to have some experience with drawing at a minimum, probably some experience with coloured pencils as well.
