'Once In A Blue Moon' brings together a collection of darkly humorous short stories from the best-selling author of 'The Restraint Of Beasts', 'All Quiet On The Orient Express' and 'Three To See The King'.
It pains me to admit this as I LOVE all of Magnus Mills' novels, but this just didn't live up to my expectations. It's not that the writing is bad exactly, but I didn't feel remotely satisfied after reading.
At first I thought his economical, creeping style perhaps didn't work with short stories, but now I think there just aren't enough of them: it's really not worth the full price of a book for what is essentially a leaflet.
First, just to say, for something billed as a high quality small press product, it had not been proof read and it was no more than a normal quality of small paperback.
The stories where disappointing. Vignettes more than stories. Something that could be put into a much wider context by the author in in ones' own imagination - but why take these as a starting point for that? I don't resent the 10 minutes it takes to read, but this is one for fans and completists.

When Mill's novels are more short story than novel, it's no surprise that Mill's collection of short stories is easily read in 30 minutes. But, an entertaining 30 minutes. I feel as if the stories are an accurate reflection of Mill's wondering, quirky, and imaginative mind.
