5+++ King and Queen stars. I don't know where to start with this review. I loved everything about this book. From the writing, to the two MCs, to the secondary characters, just all of it. Baylor and State grew up in Kings. It was an area riddled with crime and drugs. Their parents were terrible parents that never protected them. Some horrible things happen to Baylor (it's just touched on, not detailed). State helps her and protects her as much as a little boy can. They are the best of friends. They both end up in the foster care system and are eventually separated. This devastates them both. They find each other again years later and this is where this epic love story actually begins.
I'm not going to go into more detail about the story but will talk about some of the characters instead. State, oh State. This man will go down as one of my favorite Hs of all time. The love this man has for Baylor is second to none. There's a line in the book that says what they have can't even be described by the word love and it's true. They are two halves of a soul. From the second they come back into each other's lives it is pretty effortless after a short period. State loves Baylor with every fiber of his being. He would turn his back on the world for his Queen if that's what it took to keep her in his life. She is his home.
Baylor was also a fantastic h. She was so kind hearted and had so much to give. She stepped out of her comfort zone time and again just to support State and be what he needed her to be. She was so much stronger than she gave herself credit for and when it comes to those she loves, there is nothing she won't do. I loved her relationship with Miss Tami and Rowe.
One of the things I loved most about this book was that all of the angst and drama came from life events. It wasn't relationship drama. Everything that is thrown their way doesn't even remotely shake the foundation of their relationship. It makes them stronger. A writer that doesn't use all of the same overused tropes to cause drama relationship is creative and well worth a read in my eyes. The secondary characters in this story added so much instead of taking anything from this couple. Especially Rowe. I just wanted to reach through my phone and hug this little girl. There is some tough subject matter in this story that some may be sensitive to but as I said, things are touched on and great detail is not given. It's still tough though.
I'm not going to say more because this story just needs to be experienced. I found this by chance while skimming KU books on Amazon and I am so glad I gave it a chance. I have never read an H.J. Bellus book before but I will definitely be reading her others. If she writes protective, possessive Hs like this one, well sign me up.
I'm a little conflicted as to how I feel about this book. There were certain aspects I liked and some I didn't enjoy at all.
Pros: -H is head over heels for h. I never had to worry about him straying, he was completely obsessed with her.
-I loved how they were childhood best-friends and how we got glimpses into their lives before in the early chapters. Him being her protector from the start was amazing to see.
Cons: -The writing. It definitely needed another read through b/c I found many errors.
-I didn't like how fast they jumped into things once they met again. They've literally just met after how many years and are proclaiming their love already. I usually don't mind the H/h moving on this quick but here with their past I needed some time for them to reconnect and not just jump into things.
-The biggest thing I hated was how the h was a celibate during their separation but he was with others. The only proof we have of this is him saying "I've always used a condom." I feel like that was unnecessary. He said how he loved her even while they were separated and got her name tattooed on his back then how could he sleep with other women? It also didn't make sense b/c he kept saying how he never had a gf and when OW come around pretending to be his ex he claimed that never happened. Hell, even his teammates were saying how he was going on about the h since he was a freshman. Their love would have been so much more amazing had he waited for her as well. That little detail really bugged me.
We meet State and Baylor as 9 year olds living in a dangerous neighborhood hiding from their abusive family members. They bundle together in a closet holding on to each other for comfort and safety.
They eventually become children in the “system” where that separated because State gets adopted and has to leave Baylor behind.
At the age of 22 they find each other again and State will do anything to make Baylor “his” even though Baylor is afraid she won’t fit into his life.
Well let’s just say, State wasn’t having any of that and fought tooth and nail for the two of them to be together, FOREVER.
Their relationship progression is natural and not filled with the dramatic plots of the push and pull by the main character’s you normally find in books. I enjoyed it to my surprise.
3.5 stars This was a sweet and at the same time quite brutal read. The Story deals with a lot of trauma and abuse, but is still what I would consider low on angst.
The h was at times slightly annoying, especially when she rejects the H even if he's done nothing but prove he wants her, however, it was not too much. The H was a saint and very patient with the h, even at times when I would have shaken her silly for being stupid.
But I appreciate that much of drama was caused by external sources which is a bit refreshing, although back and forth angst is like catnip to me.
Anyway, I would like to read a follow up with Shayne and Ryder (I think their names are).
NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BOOK! Unfortunately this book contains a huge trigger for me. It sounds like a great book and I truly wished I could read it. The events in the sweet heroine's past make it impossible for me. I may try it one someday when I am emotionally prepared for it. Sorry all but it's a skip for me now! :)
This was a sweet romance but has some difficult/hard to read content. Baylor and Slate meet as children both growing up in rough homes. They eventually both go into foster care. Slate gets adopted, Baylor doesn’t, and they get separated.
Fast forward to their college years and they reunite. I love how much they love each other and how devoted they were. I wish there was more back story of Slate. I feel like we didn’t get much information about the time they were apart for him.

Well, well, well! I bloody loved this book, I really did. I thought this was going to be a hot mess of push and pull, angst, drama and more push and pull and it SO wasn't. It teetered on the P&P very early on but that was just a wee bump in the road thankfully.
What I didn't expect was to get the most swoonworthy, amazing, thoughtful ALL IN as in all in from when they were kids before they were so cruelly separated by the system ALL IN. And I got this in spades from State. OMG, he's at the top of my perfect heroes shelf, sitting on his throne with his crown on for sure. He never wavered, not once and was prepared to go to the wall for Baylor. no question about that. I also didn't expect Baylor to be so understanding and accepting and ..... adult ... yeah, adult about the situation they found themselves in through no fault of their own.
I adored how once they reconnected they were together through thick and thin. The story was about them as a couple, loving each other, fighting for each other and building a new life for themselves with Rowe and Miss Tami. It wouldn't be NA without the angst and outside interference, but not once did it threaten them as a couple and I loved that. It's been a long time since a read a book where both characters are so committed to fighting for each other like Baylor and State did.
What a refreshing change to read a NA book where the characters are adults. And a special mention to the darling little Rowe, man what an awesome little kiddo. ♥
I had a couple of issues that stopped this from being a 5 star read - I really wanted more of his life whilst they were separated, that really could have done with more fleshing out. I also wanted to see his reaction to as his reaction would have been epic I think. There were a couple of other niggles that made me go woah but not enough to detract from my enjoyment of the book.
Welp. I tried, I really did! Be warned -- I get a little ranty, so I'm adding a spoiler tag...
I found a good bit of positive reviews for this book, showing me that lots of people seemed to really enjoy this book -- so it very well could be just me ;)
8th Apr 2017 - Just did a re-read as I was in the mood for a NA romance with 100% devoted hero. Enjoyed it just as much as original read.
4.5 stars
I really enjoyed Pinky Promise. State was an amazing hero. He never waivers in his feelings for Baylor. He was protective, possessive and so sweet. . Baylor was great too. I was glad she stood up for herself and her family when needed. The romance between them was perfect. Maybe a bit unbelievable but I enjoyed it anyway. Recommend if you want a new adult read that is low on relationship drama with a sexy yet sweet romance.
Thanks to Janie for recommending it :)

If one more person tries to stupidly justify that he's a guy so he of course must fuckaround & that's of course perfectly acceptable.
I will hurl.
Because it's too convenient why she could never be with anyone with this cop out excuse. Too convenient that the author kept the heroine celibate because she was assaulted. Eye roll.
And to those who say they were young & he's a guy so needs to have random sex, then don't call it a love story. According to HIM she's always been it for him, so well??? What? It's so hard for him to keep it in his pants for the big love of his life? Then it's not a love story! And he CLEARLY was not completely devoted to their "love" & her being the only one for him from "when they were kids" as I've read in some reviews. Give me a break.
I really enjoyed this book. There were a few super emotional moments that had me in tears. The romance in this one was super sugary sweet. I loved Rowe and I loved both State and Baylor's relationships with her. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more by this author.
This was a really good read all because the HEA was guaranted early on in the book so the rest of it is more of an extended epilogue but at the same time, how to survive an HEA.
State and Baylor survived a tough childhood together but was separated when State was adopted. Years later, they met again and had a chance to be together again. I'll never get tired with second chance romances. Although in this case, it wasn't really a full one since they were just kids when they got separated. I enjoyed how they journeyed through fusing their new lives and new families together. It wasn't easy and there were times when it wasn't really what I expected (although I won't go into details so that I don't give away spoilers).
Overall, this book turned out to be an easy read with a bit of ugly crying on the side--it can be an ugly world even in fictional ones. I won't really call myself a grammar police but there were some slips in the book that distracted me. A little editing and polishing can go a long way. It won't hurt as well if we get a book for Shayne and Ryder, right? Pretty please.
Baylor and State are attached at the hip as children. Growing up in a rundown, low part of town, each lives in their own personal hell. But they have each other. When their world is torn apart, the two are separated. After several years, they are accidentally reunited.
Well, I just want to say if there was ever a perfect hero in a book, State is it. He was simply amazing. I loved everything about him but especially how he was with Rowe. He just took her in and she was forever his princess....like I said, he was AMAZING! He called Baylor his Queen and I absolutely loved it. He never wavers in his love or devotion when the two are brought back together.
Poor Baylor...it was very hard to read about her childhood and the abuse she endured. Thanks to Miss Tami, though, she grew into a beautiful and strong woman. Not necessarily in the usual sense, but strong nonetheless. Told almost entirely from her POV, she had a beautiful soul and loved Rowe with all her heart.
This book also had some great secondary characters such as Miss Tami, Shayne, Ryder, Coach and Momma Pete and of course, Rowe herself. I laughed, I cried and sighed most of the whole book.
So why not 5 stars from me? Well, there were a couple of things that bugged the shit out of me. First, there were a few inconsistencies. It seemed the author wrote one thing but then forgot about it and later, wrote something else entirely. For instance, at one point there's a party before the start of the football season. It's said to be at State's home and his adoptive parents will be there. Later at the party, his parents are never mentioned at all and no one talks about this or makes excuses as to why they aren't. Like I said before, it's like the author forgot they were supposed to be there. Another time, State talks about his parents and them never giving up on him so it lead me to believe he had a wonderful life and loved his parents. But later, it's mentioned he wants to do social work but his parents are all about football and don't like his choice. It just seemed contradictory to what he said previously. And then also his mother is a total bitch to Baylor...I mean, I really, really hated her. We're given an explanation later as to why but still, it just didn't "fit" the character to me for her to be so mean.
Finally, and this goes along with the inconsistencies, I think the author missed the mark on making this an epic love story between these two. EVERY. SINGLE. THING. State does, shows he is all about Baylor...every action, word, never having a girlfriend and even the tattoo on his back of her name. Except for one thing, and this totally bugged me to death...he apparently at some time or another, slept with other girls. Now listen, I do not expect him to stay celibate...he is a young man after all. And usually I don't have an issue with characters being with others when they are separated at such a young age. After all, they haven't developed that type of "love" yet. HOWEVER, if you are going to paint him so devoted and to never forget her enough to tattoo her name on your back and never have a girlfriend, WHY IN THE HELL would you have him sleep with others? It just sort of seemed inconsistent, there's that word again, a tiny bit for me. And what's weird is he even says to Baylor when some girls are making it seem like he parties and has slept with them, that he has never done that but at the most intimate moment between him and Baylor he says he's always used condoms. So which is it? It's just one of those "inconsistencies" I was talking about. Nothing he has said or done up to this point would have ever made me believe he'd been with anyone else.
So, those few things aside, it really was a beautiful story. And like I said, State was perfection.
Pardon me while I wipe the tears from my eyes for the 100th time during this story!!
Wow this was a sorrowful, touching, sweet, sexy, wonderful filled story. I can't say enough about it. It touched my heart in so many ways. I couldn't put it down till I finished and I was reading it while I was getting my car fixed trying not to cry in front of all the strangers waiting for their cars.
This is the first story I have read from this author and I will be reading more.
Baylor is so beautiful in so many ways. She had to grow up fast and when her strength was taken away it not only broke her but me too. She comes a long way in the story and she learns to stand up for what she wants.. what she deserves. Her heart is so big and she takes care of a little girl with Down's syndrome with her foster mother.
State comes in like a hurricane. He is the safe haven for Baylor and he is also tore up when he is adopted and she is not. He is a huge protective teddy bear. He is astonishing in his loyalty and love for Baylor and then for Rowe. He is the man every woman would want to protect her and love her.
This story touches on so many levels of today’s society. Drugs, abuse, PSTD, and the forgotten children left in its path. So sad, but this story is so beautiful.
Please read and enjoy it is so wonderful and it will touch your heart!
On the fence with this one. I want to rate it higher because the book has potential, but the characters made me want to slam my head against the wall. The plot was choppy so many questions that were left unanswered and the ones that did get answered were merely mentioned and it was back to "I love you so much I would die without you. You're my everything. I'll do whatever it takes" Really all that?
There was nothing to these characters except they grew up in a f@&k up situation (again this was explained poorly), besties forever, forced apart by circumstance and found each other by chance. Then bone like there is no tomorrow. Who has that kind of time? Neither had friends or co-workers to talk to or hang out with? Sure there was Tami, but even she hung out with friends and her boyfriend.
Was reading some reviews that mentioned he cheated. There was no cheating, they weren't even together when he was with the the other girls. And if they say he cheated on her heart. I. Will. Hurl. Come on ladies, they were children when they were separated and it wasn't that type of relationship at that time. He's a male they will hump anything! The reason she waited is understandable. She was attacked at a very young age which explains the urinating on herself.
The writing is too immature for me. I know that I barely got into the story, but I just could not feel a connection with the two main characters. The story had a lot of potential however, I would have put all of the flashbacks in one prologue instead of in multiple short chapters. Once we get to 'grown' Baylor, I really could not guess how many years had passed- is she in her teens or her twenties? She acted the same to me. If she were acting her age (assuming she is in her late teens/early twenties), I would think that she would not have blamed State for getting adopted (not his fault tbh). But it also seemed like they were in the same town? As they got older, why would they not have been able to see each other? It would make more sense if had moved states away from each other. And their first meeting each other after all of those years? Eye roll inducing. They kiss right away and she tells him she loves him. They were maybe 11 when they were separated? I don't believe it. Meh. I'll just move on now.
SNIF...
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is what I love about Goodreads...I read a fellow Goodreader, Nicla review, and after reading her 5 star review, I one clicked this book....
I'm so glad I did! WOW! There is nothing in this book that I didn't love....State...dreamy sigh...what a man...his love for Baylor was so amazing to read..State is...alpha...sweet...funny!
Baylor and her one liners! She suffered so much...State as well but Baylor strength was inspiring.
Rowe was incredible, so sweet, so strong.
This book was 5 stars and beyond!
Want to read No Regrets but can't get my hands on it! Ahhhh!
I highly recommend Pinky Promise (the title is so sweet too!)
That's where I immediately fell in love with this book. You are pulled into the world of Baylor and State- the scary, cruel world of their childhood that rips them apart. Then, you taken on a journey to the moment they are reunited.
HJ Bellus wowed me once again with her words!! I can't tell you how many emotions I went through, or tears I shed, while reading this story.
"I will love you, even if I never see you again."
This was a wonderful book about two beautifully, broken souls who are connected by their past. The trials and tribulations they each take show their amazing strength.
This was a story of the forever kind of love. The love you yearn for. The one you wish for everyone. These two were lucky enough to find it when they were born. Gahhh!! Baylor and State have stolen my heart!!!
I also can't speak about this story without mentioning two ladies that made the book complete...Miss Tami and Rowe. Miss Tami is the amazing lady that became their mom by heart when they were younger, and the woman who raised Baylor. Everyone needs a Miss Tami in their life!!! Rowe. Oh, that girl!!! She stole the show within every page she was in! The spirit and love she shows to each of them, especially State, is beyond beautiful. We need more princesses in the world;)
"Love doesn't even begin to describe what's going on between us."
HJ Bellus, I don't know how you do it. You seem to top yourself with every story you give us!!
Thank you for Baylor and State's story. Thank you for giving us Miss Tami and Rowe. Thank you for giving us a story showing love in its purest form.
This was such a wonderful book!!!!! Pinky Promise;)
"I can never lose you, State. I'll die." "You'll never lose me. This is forever."
I'm extremely impressed with This storyline. This was heartbreaking good. I couldn't love these characters anymore if I tried. I'm in love with a humongous list of book bf's and State has been added to it. Beware of reviews that tell the story unless you like it that way. I've been going in blind for awhile now, I'm finding it to be the best way to go. Baylor was definitely a perfect herione.
Have you ever read a story that draws you in from the beginning? Where you can't put the book down? This is exactly what Pinky Promise did for me. I was drawn from page one and it didn't let me go until the very end.
I am one for not giving out spoilers in reviews, I personally feel it gives too much of the story away. I will most definitely say you will fall completely head over heels with State and Baylor journey of lost, through there journey of struggles, there journey of triumphs and most of all Love from a Pinky Promise.
HJ Bellus wrote a beautiful heartfelt story, she poured her blood, sweat and tears with every emotional feel and then some that makes a story worthy.
You will not be disappointed with this read...just a warning ahead of time...have a box of tissues next to you. A book that will touch you in many different ways!
Heartbreaking, soul destroying, devastating.... These are all the words I would use to describe the first chapter of this book.. But then, in true HJ Bellus fashion we see her weave a story from the bottom up to evolve what started out as a story of despair into a tale full of hope, joy, wonder, love and triumph.
HJ Bellus has taken not just 2 characters but 4 and written their life story in a way that both rips your heart out and smashes it to pieces then bit by bit puts it back together. The characters are all amazing in their own ways and the way they change from the very beginning through to the end is nothing short of amazing. Baylor & State are the main characters but then there is also Miss Tami & the ever beautiful Rowe who I can say in all honesty, steals the show right out from under the rest of the characters!! I think what I loved most about this story is the unconditional love that pours out of all of these characters. When they love, they love with all they have. It is fierce, it is loyal and it is all consuming. The feelings are real, the emotions are high and throughout it all, the love shines bright and constant. Time hasn’t dulled the memories or the feelings and when tragedy strikes this self- made family they truly see what it means to stick together and show everyone else, but more importantly themselves what it means to rise against the odds and come out the other side smiling and happy. State and Baylor know the true meaning of the “Pinky Promise”. They learnt it at a very young age and even years later when they join pinkies, they know it is a promise of a lifetime full of joy, happiness and love. I will admit I did read this book in 1 sitting. I did need tissues and my hubby & children looked at me like I had lost the plot while I sobbed my heart out on one page and smiled at something I thought was funny on the next!! If you love a book with all the feels, all the emotions & one that keeps you captivated from start to finish while leaving you wanting more, then you are going to want to read this ASAP!!
Once again HJ Bellus has exceeded my expectations and left me in awe of her talent, her creativity, her compassion and her ability to take a story, strip the characters raw and build their tale into a truly beautiful timeless romance. I cannot wait to see what she writes next!!
Baylor and State both grew up in the bad part of town. State was her best friend but also her protector. Things get worst for them, then one day their worst nightmare happens, State fines a home. Baylor shuts down as a little girl feeling all alone till social worker Miss Tami takes her in and shows her what being love feels like, but she always felt like a part of her was lost when State left her behind. Years pass and Miss Tami adds to their little family, enters the sweet but battered little Rowe. One night at work brings the one person she never thought would come back for her, State. That night brings them full circle but outside interference try's to break them apart but the love they have for each other just maybe to strong for anything to break them and add Rowe to the mix and a family is forms and there is nothing State will do to protect Rowe and Baylor. This story was and amazing read, you may shed a tear or two, feel happiness, heartbreak then the ever strong love these beautiful souls have for their family. I can't say enough good things about this wonderful story about the one's left behind but find their way back, stronger and ready to live their life to the fullest together.
The first few pages already had me tearing up. I really liked this one. I loved how state knew what he wanted and went after it with everything. Nothing and no one came before Baylor and Rowe. Baylor I wasn't 100% sold on even though I liked her just not as much as I did State. I liked that neither of them had any relationships and we're holding on for each other even though they never if they'd ever see each other again. which I know for a college football player is kind of hard to do. But that would have made this book 5 stars for me. I loved their happily ever after it was so deserved on both of their parts. Looking forward to Shayne and Ryders book.
