Beings fall in love, too.

In a world where magical creatures came out of the closet after the First World War, romance still pops up in unexpected places. Police detective and werewolf Ray Branigan will have to overcome his own prejudices to find a happy ending, in Some Kind of Magic. Dragon and historian Philbert Jones has a challenge to face in A Boy and His Dragon—convincing Arthur MacArthur that his worthy of being a dragon’s treasure. In A Beginner’s Guide to Wooing Your Mate, Zeki Janowitz, wizard, and Theo Greenleaf, werewolf, have a second chance at a relationship, if they can learn what love’s really about. Tim Dirus is on the run from his own kind, in Little Wolf, but werewolf and local sheriff Nathaniel Neri is determined to teach him that it’s not all about how alpha you are. And in The Firebird and Other Stories, R. Cooper takes us from the turn of the twentieth century to present day with stories that explore beings throughout history.

I'm R. Cooper, a somewhat absentminded, often distracted, writer of queer romance. I'm probably most known for the Being(s) in Love series and The Suitable 'Verse stories. Also the occasional story about witches or firefighters in love.

I loved most of these stories but I'm also very glad to be done and will take a break from stories with too many misunderstandings and/or too little communication for now. Especially Little Wolf was exhausting in that regard.

The Being(s) in Love series is an awesome collection of contemporary, urban fantasy, paranormal stories all linked together through one universe. Involving creatures like werewolves, fairies and dragons, it's a series that takes you through a whirlwind of emotions and possibilities.

OVERALL

When it comes to negatives, there are very few. There are no chapter headings, just divided chapters with capital letters at the start of each new scene, which makes it hard to acknowledge how many chapters are left. The only a few exceptions. There are also a few editing issues throughout, but nothing overly confusing or frustrating to deal with.

I do have an issue with the whole 'miscommunication' aspect of each story. Most of the time it's because some big bag wolf or dragon can't just come out and say “You're my mate. Would you be interested in getting to know me?” Because, if that happened, there would be no story, but sometimes it just seems a little stupid for everyone (and the town, in some cases) to never say anything.

However, the entire series is romance gold. From slow burn to flaming heat, there are stories of all sorts. There are a variety of Beings (wolves, fairies, dragons and magic users for the novels; a firebird, jaguar, fairy, troll, elf, imp and dragon in the last novel of shorts) that each get to tell the story of their people and show how they love. Some have destined mates, but not all, and it's great to see how that differs from Being to Being.

I started this series thinking that Book 1, Some Kind of Magic, was my favourite story. I'm ending it with an absolute certainty that The Firebird and Other Stories has taken its place. I can't help it. Kazimir stole my heart and that can't be undone.

If they were all available in paperback (though that's sadly not the case) I would absolutely be snapping up each and every novel until I had the whole set. For now, I'll settle for keeping this on my Kindle as a yearly re-read must.

so many wonderful stories

All of these stories are true love between beings/people who are different species… so their tales are ripe with miscommunications, patience, and yearning as two beings from different backgrounds and with different instincts get to know each other.

There have to be at least a dozen stories in here. The first half of this collection are complete stories. The second half are more like fairytales — the characters and plot are fleshed out enough to get invested, but there are more details to be worked out after the story is over.

I loved how some characters reappeared in other stories. And how different times like pre and post WW2, and the early years of the AIDS crisis were explored through the “being” lens.

Hard to average; maybe 3.7 Amazon / 3.2 Goodreads = I NEED a half-star!

I'll have to use a PC to paste in the relevant jottings from my "Notebook" for the final wide-timespan short story collection (which, BTW, is lacking a sub-Table of Contents, 👎), and likewise for the individual reviews of the earlier stories which I've already posted on Goodreads. For now, though, I'll just say that while they're not perfect, and have a bit too much of dragging out mutual-misunderstanding-induced pining (and ditto of occasional exhibitionism), I did find the characters sympathetic and interesting, as were many of the plot-elements and themes (where Beings face prejudice, etc.).

Magical and breathtaking and so much more!

This is one of those books that I had to put down occasionally, with the emotions and the feelings and the entirely too beautiful stories. I think there are more- I need to know what happens with the firebird!

A beautiful collection of stories

This is a gorgeous collection of stories.
Each featuring a different couple, there are some overlaps even through the history and I enjoyed each story very much, although my favourite was probably "A beginners guide to wooing your mate"

I reviewed the individual stories on their pages and did updates for each of the short stories of Firebird. As a whole, I love love love the books and stories and the relationships. Wooing is one of my favorites for the magic and how magic is expressed, but definite frustrations with regards to communication between the pair. That is really my only complaint, the lack of communication. It makes sense and is a large part of the world building I so love, but it's also very frustrating to know someone can just say SOMETHING and so many issues would be avoided and resolved. The world and mythology is gloriously developed and the pairings rip at heartstrings with delicate abandon.
