Can love penetrate an abusive past and defeat unwarranted guilt?

Alicia Cesare has a lot to celebrate. A recent Parsons School of Design graduate and recipient of a fashion design award, she embarks to Europe on a quest for independence and recognition. Instead, she finds trouble and mayhem and must accept the help of ex Marine and real estate magnate, Chase Reardon, the only man she’s ever desired. Problem is he barely knew she existed. That is about to change.
Like a lit match to a firework, rash innocence ignites fierce overprotectiveness and a sizzling romance develops, but Chase is a haunted man. Scarred by an abusive past and stalked by the vengeful head of the Russian drug cartel, he struggles to follow his heart while safeguarding those he loves. When Alicia is unwittingly thrust into his web of relentless violence, Chase is determined—at any cost—to protect her from his past.
As each new sexual awakening binds her closer to him, Alicia is convinced she must help the love of her life defeat the ghosts of his past. It will prove to be an unyielding test of courage and stamina.

➳I was interested by the synopsis, but this story took a turn of events that rather made me question my actions and future ones of reading the following novel...

➳I'm going to keep this review very, VERY short. I was given a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review and I have to obviously be honest about what I have to say. When it comes down to romance novels, I expect a spark, some sort of chemistry from both characters that makes me swoon and interests me to read any further. This book... This novel, was just beyond bland that I seriously wanted to stop reading and just quit. Of course, I kept reading it because I have to give a full review of what I thought of the whole book.

➳The story plot was... okay? It was not interesting in any way. There is a lot of drama that made me want to pull my hair sometimes... and not going to lie, I fell asleep while reading a certain "intimate scene." That itself says something about the novel.

➳Overall, I am truly saddened that I couldn't enjoy this novel as much as I wanted to because I had my hopes up when it came down to the synopsis. Now, I don't know if I should give the second book a try because I know it will most likely be a waste of my time and also I will not be invested in the story line. Chase and Alicia seriously need more spark in their relationship instead of being surrounded by so much drama...

***Just found out from the author this is part of a trilogy so upgrading my rating to 4 solid Stars!******

Ok so this book was a great premise. But it was not what I thought it would be and the ending, well the ending took it from a 4 star to 2.5, unless its a cliffhanger...

What I liked:

I liked the world building, and the descriptive way the book was written. I felt as if I could see what was going on around the characters and the characters themselves were well rounded and each unique. I liked that the H and h came from different backgrounds but had a past history , and that each overcame obstacles and hardships. I loved Chase's alpha personality and his protectiveness. The relationship seemed to bloom as did Alicia. The secondary characters were engaging and I could see a series forming from here.

Here's where I have a problem: Every time the H and h have an issue there is no closure, they gloss it over with sex and Alicia thinks that of course things will be that way they have different pasts and Chase can be controlling because of it. PROBLEM!!! While they sit and talk about things there is never any real closure of validation to how Alicia feels. I felt like I needed to vent for her, which was awkward. However even that was not quite as upsetting to me as the end. There was none.

I'm desperately hoping this is a cliff hangar because I feel as if nothing was resolved. I have no clue what happened to Fiona, or Dimitri. Then end just did not fit the rest of the book. It was rushed and no moment between Chase and Alicia about how to handle what happened to her. No tenderness that the rest of the book showed and no closure. I like a good battle and seeing the bad guy get his just desserts. While many others may not have any issue to me I like to see that end piece of closure and communication.

****So glad to find out this wasn't the end and that I missed seeing that it continues in the next book because the story building rocked and I loved the character development! I will definitely be continuing this in the future.

*Copy was received from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.*

“Green sparks confronting blue stormy seas. Fire and water. Opposites in so many ways but the same where it really counts. Love. Empathy. Concern. And knowing that we’re home in each other’s arms. I feel it. He feels it.”

A girl with a huge and long term crush on her brothers’ friend. A guy who has a dark past that haunts him to his future. Luxury, money is not a problem. A friendship bond made by blood. Sex in places you never thought possible. If these things don’t get your attention then I don’t know what will. It’s like 50 Shades of Grey but only better, much, much better.

I love this book and since this is the first installment to a trilogy I can honestly say that I will be looking forward to reading the rest of the series. This book has its ups and downs but I really enjoy most of its attributes and especially the story.

Chase and Alicia have this bond where they understand each other so much and would easily be on the same page (sometimes). Also Chase’s corny jokes and sex comments always make me laugh. I’m pretty sure I’ve never laughed so hard reading an erotic book before nor any book for that matter.

“You and I may have grown up in the same town, but we came from different worlds.”

Alicia has accepted Chase’s past but it seems like Chase doesn’t believe that she’ll be able to understand and cope with his problems. To save a dear friend Chase had put someone in jail and when that person got out he was seeking for revenge. And what better way to have revenge than hurting the people he cares the most. Family, friends, girlfriend, spare no one just to get back at Chase Reardon.

“Problem is, even in fairytales there’s evil.”

Part of knowing someone is after her boyfriend, Alicia thought she would never have an easy life with him. But no fairytale is complete without the villain right?

I’ve been on the edge of my seat while I was reading this book because I always get worried and wonder whether there’s going to be a trap or something bad might happen. The story isn’t predictable for me I have been surprised countless of times. I think this book felt very long but it wasn’t bad at all. I can’t wait to read the second book.

I highly recommend this book to my friends. I’ve even started telling them about my feels and excitement for this book. It’s gut wrenching, exciting, painful and humorous.

SPOILER ALERT

Now I’ll break down the story so I can say the things I didn’t love about the book. It would spoil others of the story so I placed it all in the Spoiler Section (but not all below here are bad comments).

1. They had sex once and the next day Chase was all like, ‘I’m in love! We will be together forever.’ There was no build in their relationship, unless a plot twist happens where Chase has been crushing on Alicia for so long too. I would have loved to see that build but I understand that it would take too long and just drag the story.

2. “I like being able to pay. For too long that wasn’t the case.” This line helped me understand why Chase is the way he is and it may seem like he’s throwing away money of Alicia but he’s only doing what he couldn’t afford to do while growing up.

3.The surprise before Alicia’s award night killed me to the bone. I wasn’t expecting him to be in her room waiting for him and with a complete outfit!

4.Alicia is always jumping to conclusion that they’ll break up every time they fight. She sounds very childish every time it crosses her mind. It’s just a fight and things will work out eventually. She knows Chase loves her yet she still has doubts on their relationship.

5.I always worry when Alicia is alone because I think that something bad might happen to her and Chase would lose his shit.

6.Shoutout to Herman for being part Filipino!

“Everything about you is beautiful. I missed you so much it hurt to breathe.” Young relationship problems.

The cliffhanger was the worst. It may not seem like a cliffhanger to you but I badly need to know what happened to Dimitri and Fiona.

I well crafted story, I enjoyed reading it. Few editing mistakes. I liked the heroine, she's smart and feisty. She has just graduated from fashion design school and has won an award in Italy for one of her designs. She meets the hero there when she gets in trouble with the law and he comes to her rescue.
I liked the hero except for one scene later in the book when he is mad at her for falling asleep instead of keeping an eye on his sister, who then disappears. He really blasts her and I loose respect for him.
Alicia, the heroine of course feels it was all her fault and takes the blame. Other than that scene, it was an enjoyable read. 3stars

I was immediately intrigued by this novel that took place in beautiful and glamorous Monaco in Europe. They had chemistry and spades and the story was fantastic.

While I believed in Chase, a driven and dominant millionaire and Alicia's, a budding fashion designer, connection, I felt that there was something missing. There was alot of fiery combustible chemistry but not alot of emotional depth. While, this was a great story, I did find some things lacking. All in all, though, this was a great debut novel!

I would like to thank NetGalley and New Rose Press for a copy of this novel for a fair review.

Thank you to NetGallery for giving me a free review copy in exchange for an honest review.

Captive of a Commoner is the first book of a trilogy and my first read by C.J Pastore. Intrigued by the plot with a promise of the beautiful landscapes of Monaco, I picked up this book and wasn't disappointed. Alicia Cesare seeks her own identity, driven to make sense of the world even though she has achieved much on paper. She has mental wounds that need healing, and she needs to convince herself that affection from Chase Reardon will be a looped fairytale in her mind's eye. Cut to questionable choices, which lead to their paths crossing. Chase is far from perfect, even though he has remarkable achievements. Unresolved inner child wounds come to light, creating a realistic push and pull effect between the well-developed characters. Their conversations felt honest and authentic and so were their disagreements. The chemistry and passion between Chase and Alicia are beautifully written, which adds to the allure of the plot. There are numerous laugh-out-loud moments, especially with the Cesare family interactions and Chase's one-liners in bed, which were a warm welcome.
“Problem is, even in fairytales there’s evil.” The evil in this book is so unpredictable that you don't know when it will strike. The ending for me was rushed but given that there's book number two, I cannot wait to dig in! Overall, it was a 4-star read!

It was good. Not riveting but not bland. Characters are solid. Storyline is engaging. Editing is far better than many of the ebooks I've read this year. I think there was only 1 missing word... no glaring punctuation problems or grammatical errors. A couple of sentences seemed strangely worded until I realized that it was my internal verbal cadence that was the problem. I was glad to find that this is the first in a series as I was very confused by the ending. It just.... stops.

Good story with a wonderful couple and great supporting characters. I enjoyed travelling around the european coast with them too. A few unresolved items so I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

I enjoyed the chemistry between the characters and the plot was interesting. There were a few editing issues but I did not dwell on that and the way that he got mad at her for "losing" his sister made him a big, fat jerk. In the following books, he better apologize...OR ELSE.

I liked this book. I was able to read it in less than a day. Chase and Alicia's story was full of love, suspense and intrigue. I loved all if the characters and how they fit in and had a part in how everything flowed. I will definitely be reading the other 2 books in this series.

A Lovely Romance

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. There was plenty of drama, but lots of romance to make up for it. The characters were likeable and believable. The end came suddenly and I wasn't ready for the story to end. I recommend this book.

An exciting and sexy read! I enjoyed the chemistry between Alicia and Chase. The plot moves at an exciting pace especially when Chase is forced to deal with a violent past that threatens them both. This book has it all-humor, adventure, and sexual attraction.

This book this arc was provided by netgalley. My review is 100% honest and my own opinion of the book.

Alicia is a recent graduate of Parsons school of design. She goes to Europe to experience new things. This is where she runs into her ex, Chase. Chase is an ex-marine on special missions. Chase wants to keep the ones that he loves safe but the Russian cartel has other thoughts. With everything going on, Alicia is in the wrong place and the wrong time proceeding to trust her into Chase's past.

This book was slightly hard to get into but after a bit I was able to engage with the story. I fell in love with the characters. I'll be honest I did read book 2 before reading book 1. So it would help if you read the first book within the series. This is 100% my fault for I had gotten the arc for both books and just didn't read the clearly labeled books. Once I read the first book it cleared up a lot of confusion and holes that I was questioning.

The struggle and pain that the main character had to go through was very relatable even if the situation was not. But the struggle that they had within their relationship and the push and pull of a second chance pushing them together was realistic. I am looking forward to reading more of this authors work.

I was intrigued by the blurb of this book and was eager to get to it. The story is based around young fashion designer Alicia who comes from a rich family and and older, self-made millionaire Chase. Alicia is arrested in Monaco for possessing drugs and Chase comes to her rescue. She ends up spending the next few week with him in Italy.

Things I loved about this story:
I loved the wonderful settings and locations in Europe. The chemistry between Chase and Alicia sizzled and the two of them in bed was hot. I also enjoyed some of the mystery surrounding Chase and his history.

What I didn't like so much.
Outside of the bedroom I didn't find any commonality between Chase and Alicia and I therefore didn't feel any great urge for them to be together. Great sex is good for a while but I wanted more depth to the characters.
Also, parts of this book dragged. I feel the story would have been told better with less words.

On the whole, this is a good book, especially for a debut novel. The erotic scenes sizzled and the mystery made me flip the pages. I will read this author again.

This book is awesome. I personally loved Chase and Alicia'a story. Chase is the best friend of Alicia's brother and a self made millionaire. He rushes in to save the day, when Alicia find herself arrested for drugs in Nice, Monoco.

The book is full of sexy sex scenes and an exciting book to read. I honestly was very very surprised!!!

Worth it! Totally worth it!!

DNF'd at 18% (start of Chapter 8)

**I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest voluntary review. All opinions are my own and not influenced by my source.**

I love a good drama-filled adult erotica series. They've got that edge of danger/suspense and passionate romances thanks to its "damaged" heroes and heroines and I just love to uncover the mystery of it all.

Both our leads have secrets in their pasts that kept me intrigued. What is this guilt that Alicia feels about her mother's health? Who is the girl Chase tries to save at the start? Chase in particular seemed to have a rather dangerous past so I wondered where that would go later in the book.

One of the reasons I wasn't able to finish this is because we jump all over the place a little. One minute your in the present, the next your reading about a detailed past event before jumping back to the present and forgetting what you were even doing their in the first place. I'm all for establishing a past narrative but it was very overwhelming trying to keep all the information straight.

However, my biggest deterent from finishing this book was the lack of chemistry between these two. Sure, they have sorchingly hot sex but why does Alicia even like Chase? Why has he been her one and only when they've talked a grand total of 2 times in the past 5 years? i just didn't see the connection between them other than proximity and physical lust.

This just wasn't for me. I think those who likes lots of drama and steam will enjoy this series.
