Gorilla
It is the story of an LTTE child soldier, originally written in Tamil and then subsequently translated in English by Anushiya Sivanarayanan (who also has written the foreword).
Playful yet disturbing, Gorilla plunges us into the village of Kunjan Fields, in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. Here, amusing local thug Gorilla runs wild and poor Rocky Raj, his son, tries to distance himself from his father's antics. Rocky Raj immerses himself in his studies, but the Tamil Eelam Movement comes to town and he becomes a child soldier. Soon, however, he is thrown out by the Movement for not following orders - then recaptured and tortured.
Filled with characters as strange and violent as they are unforgettable - young girls with bombs concealed in their bosoms, delinquent boys, illicit liquor sellers, wily police inspectors, murderers, prostitutes, farmers, innocents – Gorilla is a English language debut of a remarkable talent.

பிரான்ஸில் அகதி தஞ்சம் கோரிய ஒரு போராளியின் கதை. மிகவும் பேசப்பட்ட புத்தகம் என்பதாலும் இச்சா, ம் குடுத்த நம்பிக்கையாலும் மிகுந்த எதிர்பார்ப்புடன் வாசிக்க தொடங்கினேன். எங்களை போன்ற சாதாரண வாசகர்களுக்கு விளங்க கூடாது என்பதுக்காகவே எழுதியது போல இருந்துச்சு. ஆனா திரும்ப திரும்ப வாசிச்சு ஓரளவு விளங்கிகொண்டன்.

Almost every character introduced comes with an asterisk, which explains the death of that person mostly in 20s or 30s, which is very disheartening. The author wasn't judgemental or with prejudice. It is very non-linear in the beginning of the book. The only problem was me as a Tamil from India that it's mostly written in the Sri Lankan Tamil dialect. Hope a publisher can provide a good translation next time.

எனக்குப் பிடித்த ஈழ எழுத்தாளர்களில் ஷோபாசக்தி முதன்மையானவர். அவருடைய "மிக உள்ளக விசாரணை" உலகின் தலைசிறந்த சிறுகதைகளில் ஒன்றாக இருக்கும். ஷோபாசக்தியை நான் முதன்முதலில் படித்தது எம்.ஜி.ஆர். கொலைவழக்கு சிறுகதை மூலம் தான். அக்கதையின் தலைப்பு என்னை மிகவும் தூண்டியது.அன்றிலிருந்து ஷோபாசக்தியின் தீவிர வாசகன் நான். எழுத்தில் தெறிக்கும் எள்ளலும் பகடியும் ரௌத்திரமும் ஈழ போராட்டங்களை இருமுனைகளில் நின்றும் விமர்சிக்கும். கண்டி வீரனை போலொரு ரகளையான ஒரு கதையை யுத்தப்ப பின்னணியில் எழுத ஷோபாசக்தியால் மட்டுமே முடியும்.
கொரில்லா அவரது தொடக்க எழுத்துக்களில் ஒன்று. ஆட்டோஃபிக்ஷன் வகையைக் சேர்ந்த இப்புத்தகம் இயக்கத்தில் சேரப்போகும் ஒரு இளம் போராளியின் கதை. இது ஷோபாசக்தியுடைய கதையாக கூட இருக்கலாம். போய் சேருகிறான் என்பதை விட, அங்கு அவன் கொண்டு சேர்க்கப்படுகிறான்.பல்வேறு காரணங்களினால்.
இப்பயணத்தை,அதில் உள்ள மனிதர்களை, யுத்த காலத்தினை, ஆமிக்காரர்களை, இயக்கத்தினுள் இருக்கும் பல்வேறு உள்ளரசியலை காட்சி சிதறல்களாக பிடித்து கைப்பிடி சொற்களில் அடைத்திருக்கிறார் ஷோபாசக்தி.

சிங்கள இராணுவத்தின் அடக்குமுறை ஒரு பக்கம் இருந்தாலும் புலிகள் இயக்கம் மற்றும் பல்வேறு தமிழ் போராளிகளால் தனிமனிதனின் குடும்பத்தின் வாழ்வு எவ்வாறு சிதைகிறது என்பதை சொல்லும் படைப்பு. புலிகள் மீது ஏகப்பட்ட விமர்சனங்களை வைக்கிறது இந்நாவல். பிற போராளி இயக்கங்களை சேர்ந்தவர்களை கொலை செய்தது, சிறுவர்களை கரும்புலியாக பயன்படுத்தியது, இயக்கங்களை ஆதரித்து அவர்களின் குற்றங்களுக்கு துணைபோவது, இயக்கத்திற்கு கட்டாய ஆள் சேர்ப்பு, இஸ்லாமியர்களை வெளியேற்றியது, வலதுசாரி பாசிச தத்துவங்களை கொண்டிருப்பது, ஜாதியை ஆதரிப்பது என்று பல குற்றச்சாட்டுகளை வைக்கிறது.

இலங்கைத் தமிழரின் உண்மை நிலையை உரைக்கும் புத்தகம். இலங்கை ராணுவத்துக்கும் தமிழ் ஈழ விடுதலை இயக்கங்களுக்கும் இடையே தமிழ்மக்கள் படும் பாட்டை எடுத்துரைக்கிறார் ஷோபாசக்தி.

The initial chapters held me in thrall, but the non-linear narrative, random characters and a chaotic plot did not help. There is no clear sequence to the story and the arrangement of chapters is as if a proper narrative exploded and rearranged itself into chapters cryptic about their true context in time and meaning. Maybe the effect was intended, to reflect the chaos prevailingly in the war-torn Sri Lanka. But it didn't help the cause of the reader.
I loved the numbered paragraphs, as in Coetzee's In the Heart of the Country and the footnotes like the ones in Oscar Wao. It was really interesting to learn about the lives of actual people through the narrative. Though the Sri Lankan Tamil is a bit difficult to understand, the prose was beautiful consistently. It was very informative about the lives of the citizens forced to take sides, ravaged by loss after loss after loss.
A hard-hitting journey this might have been, but halfway through, the book lost me in its meanderings. I'll get back to the book someday, perhaps after I take a shot at Mm or Box - the author's other books that I own.

This is an auto fiction about Sri Lankan child ltte solider in which author doesn't judge or support anybody. Even victims can be victimizer sometimes. It is not only poignant portrayal of murders and death but also how innocent people are turned cruel at some point when their emotions are kindled. Guy who talks about Gandhi and non violence takes cruelty when something bitter happens in his personal life. The book also pictures how Sri Lankan tamil people see socialism, Marxism, India's interventions in Sri Lankan fights. Most part of the book is written in colloquial ellam tamil which I found little difficult in understanding.

தமிழ் ஈழம் பற்றி நாம் பல விஷயங்களை செய்தியாக நாம் அறியும்போது நம்முடைய குருதி கொதித்து சிங்களர்களையும் அதற்கு தோதாக இருந்த இந்திய ராணுவங்களையும் வாய்க்கு வந்தபடி வஞ்சிப்போம். ஷோபாசக்தி இந்நாவலை தொடங்கும் போதே இது ஒரு புனைவு நாவல் என்று கூறுகிறார். வாசிக்கத் துவங்கும் போது சிரமமாகவே இருந்தது நடை ஈழத் தமிழ் நடை ஆன்னால் கதையின் சுவாரஸ்யம் ஈர்க்கத் தொடங்குகிறது.
வாசிக்க தொடங்கினேன் நாம் அறிந்தது மாதிரி இது இல்லையே என்ற எண்ணம் ஆரம்பித்து விட்டது, புனைவு மாதிரியே தெரியவில்லை. நாம் இந்த தமிழ்நாட்டில் அமர்ந்து கொண்டு அங்கு நடக்கும் சிங்கள மக்களால் நடக்கும் அராஜகத்தை மட்டும் அறிவோம் அதற்கு அவர்களை வைவோம். ஈழ மக்கள் சிங்கள ராணுவங்களிடமும் புலிகளிடமும் மாட்டிக்கொண்டு தத்தளிக்கும் வாழ்வியலே பெரும் போராட்டம்.
இக்கதையில் மையக்கரு ஒரு ஈழத் தமிழன் தம் நாட்டு மக்களுக்காக போராளியாக வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணத்துடன் புலிகள் இடம் சேர்கிறான் அதற்கு அப்புறம் அவனுடைய வாழ்வில் படும் இன்னல்களை எல்லாம் அவன் எப்படி எதிர்கொள்கிறான். அவன் படும் பெரும்பான்மையான இன்னல்கள் சிங்களத்தாரை விட புலிகள் இடம் தான், சர்வதிகாரம் எங்கே வந்தாலும் அது மக்களுக்கு அழிவை தான் தர கூடும். சிங்கள ராணுவத்திடம் சிக்கினால் உயிர் போகும் புலிகளிடம் சிக்கினால் அவர்களின் விதியை மீறினால் சித்திரவதை சோபா இந்நாவலை புனைவு என்று குறிப்பாக குறிப்பிட்டது இது கண்டிப்பாக புனைவாக இருக்கவே முடியாது என்ற எண்ணம் தான் எழுகிறது.
இவர்களிடம் இப்படி வாழ்வதைவிட, அகதியாக வாழ நேரிடும் போது ஏற்படும் இன்னல்கள் அதில் நடக்கும் அரசியல், எப்பா என்னடா இந்த எழவு வாழ்க்கை என்ற மாறி ஆகிவிடுகிறது. அவனுடைய பெற்றோர் இட்ட பெயரை மறந்து அவனுக்கு இட்ட பட்டப் பெயரே உண்மை என்ற அளவுக்கு அவன் உள்ளம் மாறிவிடுகிறது. அந்த பெயர் தான் கொரில்லா. இதில் வரும் ஒரு கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கும் தோற்றம் - மறைவு, அவர்கள் எந்த முறையில் கொல்லப்பட்டார்கள்? எப்படி மரணம் அடைந்தார்கள்? அவர்களுக்கு நிகழ்ந்த சம்பவங்களையும் இணைத்து இருப்பார்.

ஷோபா சக்தியின் 'கொரில்லா fiction' நாவல் ஈழத்தில் நடைபெற்ற விடுதலைப்போராட்டத்தை பின்னணியாக கொண்ட ஒரு 'புனைவு'(?). நாவலின் மொழி மற்றும் வடிவம், பல்வேறு வகையான செய்திச் சுருக்கங்களின் தொகுப்பாக உருக்கொண்டிருப்பதனால் வாசகன் இதை ஈழ போராட்டத்தை பற்றிய ஒரு அறிக்கையாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும் சாத்தியமுள்ளதால், ஆசிரியர் இந்நூல் ஒரு புனைவு என அதன் தலைப்பு வழி அறிவித்துவிடுகிறார். இலங்கையின் பேரினவாதத்தை பற்றியும் அதன் கொடிய முகத்தைப் பற்றியும் அறிந்த அளவிற்கு, விடுதலை இயக்கங்களில் நிலவிய பாசிச போக்கை பற்றி ஒரு தமிழ் வாசகன் அறிந்திருப்பென்பது அரிதான ஒன்று. இந்நூல் விடுதலை இயக்கங்களின் மீதான விமர்சனங்களையும் அதில் ஏற்பட்ட சீரழிவுகளையும் உள்ளடக்கியிருப்பது முக்கிய அம்சம்.
ஆனால் புனைவின் வழி உருவாக்கப்படும் செய்திகளுக்கும், செய்திகளின் வழி உருவாக்கப்படும் புனைவுகளுக்கும் அப்பால், வாசகன் தன் வாசிப்பின் வழியே ஈழத்தைப் பற்றிய ஒரு சித்திரத்தை உருவாக்கி கொள்கிறான். ஒரு உள்நாட்டு போர் கொண்டு வரும் நேரடி சீரழிவுகளான உயிர் மற்றும் உடைமை இழப்புகள், வாழ்விடங்களிருந்து வெளியேற்றம் மற்றும் அகதிகளின் உருவாக்கம் என்பதை தாண்டி அது கொண்டு வரும் நீண்ட காலத்திய தாக்கங்களான பண்பாட்டு ஓர்மைத்துவம், ஜனநாயகத்தின் மீதான நம்பிக்கையிழப்பு, மற்றவர்களின் மீதான வெறுப்பு மற்றும் தனி மனித சுதந்திரம் போன்ற விழுமியங்களின் மதிப்பிழப்பு, போர் ஏன் ஒரு வரலாற்று பிழையாக நிலைபெறுகிறது என்பதை காட்டுகிறது.

Pungent and shocking. A stereotypical tale of child soldier. Since Shobasakthi himself has lived through this experience, the fiction tale is remarkably close to real stories that we hear/read in this Indian subcontinent.
The story unfolds in France dealing with problems of refugees from Sri Lanka and travels backwards to the origins in Sri Lanka. The book also highlights the state of affairs for political refugees in so called developed nations.

தூய மனச் சாட்சியின் குரல்தான் கொரில்லா என்பது பிழையகாது
என்று நினைக்கிறேன்.

this book is awesome. its written by this previous child soldier for the Tamil Tigers who is now a refugee in Paris. Dark sense of humor, exciting book.
