**Author note below Jake Macgregor, San Francisco's head of the Paranormal Special Forces Unit, has his hands full. He and his team face a powerful enemy threatening to bring down the City by the Bay. With the weight of the world already resting on his broad shoulders, and after a long, hard day's fight against evil, the last thing he has time for is romance. So why do dreams of Cassia fill his nights? Cassia is a witch with an extraordinary birthright giving her power and honor beyond any being's imagination. It also forbids the one thing Cassia wants the most, the love of the mortal Jake Macgregor. When she intervenes to save his life, the consequences are inescapable-even though the magic they make together is too potent to resist. **Previously published as Dark Magic

What an absolutely stunning conclusion Cheyenne McCray has penned for her ‘Magic’ series. “Dark Magic” is everything I would have wished for and couldn’t have imagined! This series has everything a paranormal fan could want: Dark Elves, Light Elves, witches, familiars, warlocks, gods, goddesses, shape-shifters, demons, warriors, humans, Dryads, Mistwalkers, and monsters. I probably left something or somebody out too! And did I forget to mention the male versions of the previous are mostly drop dead gorgeous, arrogantly Alpha, and just mouth-watering! Oh, and they seem to have a penchant for humans…OK witches, but still. I can always dream.
“Dark Magic” is Cassia’s story. In the last book she was finally revealed as fully Elven. Now we’ll learn if she has the grit to ‘get her man’, especially since her man is the human, Jake. She’s a lot older than she looks and the time has come for her to embrace her destiny. However, the Guardian warns her that having her human would likely kill Jake, upset the balance between the worlds, and destroy Otherworld Earth. No pressure here.
Jake has always been attracted to Cassia, but now that she’s no longer hiding herself, he can’t get her off his mind. When she saves his life and takes him to her world their relationship changes forever. His Marine nickname was Bull and Cassia is about to find out just how bullheaded he can be. As far as Jake is concerned, Cassia is HIS and no force on Earth or beyond will change that. He’s positive that nothing about anyone’s life is written in stone and destiny is what you are willing to fight for. But he’ll have to convince both Cassie and the Guardian to give this human a chance.
I can’t say enough good things about this series. McCray hooked me with “Forbidden Magic” and each book after that “Seduced by Magic”, “Wicked Magic” and “Shadow Magic” just increased my fascination as she detailed more of her intricate world and the plots became deeper and more intertwined. It would be possible to read “Dark Magic” as a stand alone story, but a reader wouldn’t get the breadth and depth of the series without starting at the first book and letting McCray’s universe unfold.
The series has action, romance, suspense, love, betrayal, sacrifice, magic, and sex appeal to the nth degree! Her heroines kick butt and run the gamut from feminine to tomboy and her heroes…well, they’re all 200% grade A male. YUM! Her love scenes left me breathless (and wanting a cigarette) and I’m surprised I have any nails left after the suspense in this last book. I can’t say much because I don’t want to give anything away for those who haven’t read the series (shame on you), but I can say wholeheartedly that if you like paranormal romance, you owe it to yourself to read “Dark Magic” at the very least. I predict you’ll become as big a fan of Cheyenne McCray just like me and a host of others out there if the reader/reviewer boards are at all accurate. Her next series is ‘Armed and Dangerous’ and the first book “Zack” will be released in December 2008. I’m locked and loaded.
As captain of San Francisco’s elite Paranormal Special Forces unit, Jake Macgregor’s life is now dedicated to saving his city from complete annihilation by the powerful forces of evil which have been attacking San Francisco. Though allied with magical beings from Otherworld to defeat the dark magic creatures which threaten the safety of our world, as the leader of the PSF, Jake takes on the most responsibility. With so much going on and the fate of San Francisco looking increasingly grim, the last thing Jake needs is to be distracted. Even so, Jake finds himself more and more drawn to Cassia, a mysterious beauty whose secrets he longs to discover.
Cassia of the gray D’Anu witch coven is not all that she seems. Through her birthright she will soon possess magical powers far beyond anything she has ever known. But Cassia soon finds that power comes with a price. She will have power almost without equal, but she can never have Jake, the man she longs for. Yet when Jake’s life is threatened, Cassia cannot help but interfere to save him, setting off a chain of events that could either lead to disaster or to a love beyond her wildest dreams.
Prepare yourselves ladies and gentlemen, because Cheyenne McCray has delivered another rip-roaring, passionate adventure. Dark Magic is the final and, in my opinion best, book in Ms. McCray’s fantastic Magic series and it will keep you on the edge of your seat from first to last.
As an avid fan of the series, I have been waiting impatiently for Dark Magic. Ms. McCray pulls out all the stops in the battle of good versus evil, with heart-pounding action sequences that kept me reading into the late hours of the night. In Dark Magic we get to see all the species of Otherworld as the final battles take place. All of our favorite characters are back from the previous Magic stories, plus new Otherworld beings arrive to fight the forces of Darkwolf and his army. I’ll forgo the details to avoid giving any spoilers, but suffice it to say I could not put this book down.
At the center of the action are Jake and Cassia. While I was eager to see how the war would turn out, it’s the romance between Jake and Cassia that is the center of the story and integral to the outcome of the battle. Their love story was both incredibly sexy and heartwarmingly tender. As much as the action kept me in suspense, so to did the romance. Ms. McCray kept me wondering how it would work out for Cassia and Jake and I was rooting for the two of them to find happiness.
Cassia I have found an intriguing character from the start. She has been likeable but mysterious for the majority of the series and it is a delight to finally learn all her secrets. After Shadow Magic, I wasn’t sure anyone could pass up Hannah as my favorite heroine in the series, but Cassia did. She has a purity of heart and a strength of character that drew me to her and I was avidly turning the pages of the book, desperate for Cassia to find happiness with Jake.
As for the Jake Macgregor, the hero of the tale…I think by the mere mention of his name the temperature just went up in the room. The former Marine-turned-captain of the Paranormal Special Forces team defines what it means to be a strong and sexy hero. Jake is sexy, self-sacrificing, caring, strong, and true to himself. He gives everything that he is to Cassia and those endangered by the forces of evil he is fighting against. Simply put, you can’t find a hero better than Jake.
I was also incredibly impressed with Ms. McCray’s attention to the development Darkwolf and Elizabeth-Junga, the villains of this series. It has been fascinating to watch them from Forbidden Magic to this story. I was surprised to find myself invested in what was happening to these two and the fact that I had moments of sympathy for the evildoers of the Magic series is a testament to Ms. McCray’s skill as a writer.
Though Dark Magic is the final book in the series, Ms. McCray gives enough detail so that new readers will be able to follow along. Though technically the book stands alone, I would encourage reading the other books first so as to have the emotional investment in the outcome of the story. As sad as I am to see the Magic series end, in Dark Magic Ms. McCray has delivered an amazing story that is sure to leave fans of the series more than satisfied. Simply Magic!
Fantastic Conclusion to a Phenomenal Adult Fae Series!,
This was the last installment to Cheyenne's Magic Series. I enjoyed this installment, even though it was somewhat predictable. This story focuses on Cassia, the D'Anu witch, whose past has been a mystery from the beginning. Cassia, Jake McGregor and the rest of his special forces unit, the Drows, Tuatha D'Danann Warriors, Mystwalkers, earth-bound fae, the rest of the D'Anu coven and a last minute addition to the Alliance, The Light Elves, all work together to try to defeat Darkwolf; who has successfully robbed and killed Ceithlenn and Balor of their magic and is now a powerful god-warlock. There was plenty of action, suspense, intrigue and of course magic. This series was a great adult dark paranormal romance fantasy series, that help curb my cravings to read books geared for adults that involve the fae. All-in-all I will miss the series but I'm glad I gave it a chance. I highly recommend this series to dark urban fantasy readers with plenty of patience to skip through the many unnecessary sex scenes and overly emotional parts. If you don't mind sifting through those parts, the plot is fantastically-creative. I also recommend: Darkfever (Fever Series, Book 1) Storm Born (Dark Swan, Book 1) Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows, Book 1) Witch Fire (Elemental Witches, Book 1) Witchling (Sisters of the Moon, Book 1)
A good ending to a wild and crazy series. There is a ton of information packed into this final book in order to wrap up the series. McCray takes her readers on an amazing journey full of action, suspense, lies, betrayal, mystery, death, love, soul-mates, friendship and family. Each book holds its own mysteries and surprises that connect the entire series as a whole. It focuses on an individual couple, their happy ending amidst the chaos, but revisits everyone else from previous books and continues the life and death battle to save the world. I was glad to see Jake finally get his story. Pairing him with Cassie was interesting but with everything they went through they made a perfect match. She had some tough choices to make and I think the decision she made was perfect for her. Though I enjoyed each book and couple, I think this final book with Jake and Cassie was my favorite. Aside from the epic finale it was nice to see everything wrapped up and the happy outcomes for them all. *I received an ARC from the author and am voluntarily providing my honest review.
This is a sensational finish to this wonderful series. Its full of action, plenty of twists and turns in the story and like the others in the series has some seriously hot sexy situations!! Jake and Cassia's story is brilliant, it is so strong and passionate but it needs to be solid to over come the many obstacles in their way!!! Breath taking writing as always, which keeps you on the edge of your seat but at times it also gets panty wetting!!! MUST READ!
Wow, what a great end to a really enjoyable series. The characters were all very likable, strong women and somewhat bossy to begin with men, trying to p[protect them, but in the reason wins out. lots of action, suspense, drama, strong sex scenes and well a very enjoyable read...editing as I said before was painful, my only complaint.
So full of bad romance tropes. And not just sex but badly written sex. Juices and obsession with tasting said juices, wut? I had to give up finally on page 292, when I realized I was rolling my eyes and hate-reading. I stopped mid-chapter, went to bed, and realized I had no interest in picking it back up.
Jake: Leader type. Grew up on the “wrong side of the tracks” and is bitter about it. Presumably white since there’s no mention of race. Veteran who made a mistake in a leadership position, got his men killed, and is haunted by it. Can’t emotionally commit to a relationship. Attitude problem. But abruptly head over heels committed to Cassia who will HEAL him after he confesses, OOC, his inner demons. Oh, right, and apparently he goes from not feeling he can fully trust Cassia to constantly having a hard-on and losing control to the extent that he sexually assaults her. Not sexy.
Cassia: Elf, of course. 425 year old virgin who somehow has no idea of sexual relations despite living with humans for 400 of those years. Naive as fuck with no excuse. Has to come into her power as a sort of goddess figure by having vaginal intercourse with an elf. Only it turns out it can be anyone but she might accidentally kill them. If she doesn’t she dies. There’s an arbitrary time limit for the breaking of the maiden head or death ensues. Super into Jake, but not for any developed reason aside from pure carnal attraction.
And then the villain figures, a demon and a war-god who suddenly off screen start falling in love with each other instead of it just being all about sex. Don't know why I'm supposed to care. And a betrayer to the good guys who is basically totes obsessed with having sex with war-god and the presumed size of his penis. Random chapters devoted to the POV of minor characters.
Oh right plot in the background. San Francisco has been put under siege and the only defenders are the National Guard in charge of keeping curfew and nothing else, and a rag-tag group of marines, drow, witches, and a few supernatural creatures. They’ve been trying to defeat war-god for basically months and even though war-god has also recently absorbed more power he can’t defeat them even with his betrayer blah blah.
San Francisco is not a developed place. There's a warehouse on the waterfront (which doesn't make sense since Mystwalkers don't like salt water, but one goes there anyway), the Giants stadium, and one mention of hills. There's an attempt to include world-building including species in the Alliance, but it's half-hazard at best. The witch coven is supposedly important and they've been together for a while, but the character development isn't there. The number of them is meant to get us to wonder who the betrayer is but I don't GAF. All of the characters, including Jake and Cassia, are caricatures at best.
Meanwhile male character and elf-goddess-girl have to go back to elf-land and get it on so she can not-die and get awesome new powers from sexual magic. And that's when I stopped caring.
Basically I felt like I was reading a draft, and like anything that might develop setting, plot, or character was replaced with bad sex scenes. So, yeah. Didn't finish, and won't.
Maybe some of this was developed in previous novels, but the order in the front pages indicated this was the first. Literally the entire book made it seem like this was the first in a series, so the publisher did a poor job with that. A lot of the urban fantasy I read start with a major moment mid-action, so that wasn't a clue.

I love Cheyenne McCray's books and stories, and Magic series by her is definitely my fave. She can mix suspense, magic, myth and a sensual story well. Magic series can be categorized for erotica, esp for 2 first books. But not so heavy, I can said just at mild level. And this series can't be read stand alone, since the event always continue from the first to the last..
What I dislike.. Ummm, maybe because the hero, (almost all of them, really) use to have a long hair and wear leather pants. Not fans of hero like that, I prefer them have a short, military cut and use jeans instead, lol.
If you like paranormal stories with witch character and Irish myth, be sure to include this series to your must to read list
Book number 5 and the final book in the Magic series. This book was so packed with information that I had to thoroughly read every page and it took FOREVER to finish it! At least it felt like forever. This book mainly deals with Cassia and Jake but it also wraps up everyone's story and concludes the series. I can't say anything without giving something away. It's typical of the series so there's porn here but significantly less than previously, or maybe I just skipped over it to get back to the story and didn't notice it happening this time. In untypical PR manner, there is NOT a Happily Ever After for everyone in the story. That's all I'll say. If you've read the other books then you HAVE to read this one!!
a decent smut-read but not overly impressed with the writing. like many book series where each book focusses on a different person from the same world, it's ladden with unnecessary descriptions of ALL the characters facial expressions, hairstyles, the build of their body and background stories. And as far as I can tell from the blurb of her other series, the author has a series fascination of the "t-shirt and jeans - no bra" getup. personally I know very few women who would ever choose that getup going into battle or ops-meetings. or just grocery shopping really. Oh! and the oh so high pitched emotional descriptions gets tirering fast.
It was a very good book that kept you on your toes. You had a feeling what would happen but you wanted a different outcome. I never really liked Cassia until this book and she's great. She's this fragile princess but she's comes out being this strong and in control woman. It's great. I also loved hearing what happened to the rest of the witches and their families. It's a good ending to a pretty crazy series!
I guess it's good for me that this book is 5 and the end. I read them but honestly, it didn't do much for me which is odd since I really enjoy all the different magical/mythical creatures. Not a bad book, just didn't hold my interest.
A very well done conclusion to a series that has been very enjoyable! I love when a story arc is achieved and everything is tied up in a very satisfying ending.
