Spook

Rate this book
Ace Montgomery is up for a promotion at Hellion, Inc., but he’s a bit distracted. Not by being transferred to Spook, or by having to train his apprentice to be a good crossroads demon, or by having only five more months to bargain deals for over two hundred more souls to even qualify for the position. No, he’s distracted by the newly dead redhead in town.

Daphne Fitz just died, but she’s looking at death as a fresh start. A fresh start that is rudely interrupted by a coven casting a curse over Spook—the town most monsters, and now Daphne, call home. Wanting to be more gutsy in the afterlife, she takes it upon herself to end the curse. Well, she takes it upon herself to tag along with a ghostly cowboy, Chance L. Ford, and an ex-mean girl werewolf, Harper Davenport, who are set on stopping the curse, but that’s just a technicality according to Ace—who manages to weasel both himself and his apprentice, Rakkason, into the ragtag gang of heroes in an effort to get closer to Daphne.

The two ghosts, the werewolf, and the two demons embark on a journey ranging from Spook to Indiana and, very literally, Hell and back, working to put an end to the coven’s curse, all the while trying not to kill each other in the process—because Ace and Chance go back centuries, Harper has her own hidden history with the demon, Daphne and Ace are trying to keep their blooming relationship a secret, and Daphne is soon to find out that she may be a bit more than a ghost.

Shippable romance + endearing characters + fun plot + humor + Halloween-ish vibes ---What more could I want????

Plot
So in the afterlife, you go to Heaven, Hell, Purgatory, or - Spook. Spook is this town filled with monsters (ghosts, witches, werewolves, genies, sirens, etc.) and you pretty much get a “second shot” at life. This is not like reincarnation because you aren’t reborn or anything, but you merely get a fresh start in a new magical place. Aghh. Spook (the place) is just a whole lot of fun – I’m really loving the vibes of it because it’s light-hearted and magical and pretty damn awesome.

So Daphne, our protagonist, dies at the beginning of the book (not a spoiler), and she goes to Spook, meets a lot of friends, tries to solve a mystery, and goes on a mission to save Spook with her friends– That's pretty much the gist of it. This is 480+ pages of pure fun and adventure.

Besides the fun, goofy parts, there are also a few profound moments. There is one serious scene in particular that I remember – I was absolutely not expecting it, but it was touching and a little heartbreaking.

However, mainly, this book is all cute and light-hearted.

Characters
The characters are all rather quirky and they are often times goofy, but they all have something endearing about them.

--Daphne: Ghost. She’s quirky, weird, and utterly adorable. I love that she gets insecure when she first meets these new people and friends, but she learns to find acceptance.

--Ace: Demon of Pride. I loooove him so much. He’s another one of those “misunderstood bad boys” … but somehow different. He’s not actually “bad” in my opinion. He’s just a demon doing his job and he happens to have a confident demeanor and he likes to tease people. Has he ever willingly done something just to be cruel? Nope. Has he done anything particularly asshole-ish? Nope. He’s honestly sweet (at least to Daphne anyway), and he even cares for his underling in his own way, which I find adorable and funny.

--Rakkason: Demon of Lust. He’s such a kind-hearted, loyal fool, and I love him for it. He’s Ace’s underling and I love seeing their relationship. Ace bosses him aroud, and Rakkason does his best (but often times screw up), and Ace yells at him. It’s all good though because at the bottom of their boss/employee, mentor/apprentice relationship, they’re actually friends. I mean they’ll be chatting about Britney Spears – it’s so random, yet relatable.

--Chance: (Cowboy) Ghost. I like him too because he’s a good friend and generally a good person. It’s funny how he went from being an outlaw to a tour guide.

--Harper: Werewolf. She’s a reformed “mean, popular girl.” I like that for the most part, she’s kind and cheerful. She can also get really moody and is not afraid to call people out. I like that she’s a good, welcoming friend for Daphne.

Romance
There are two romances (no love triangle): Daphne&Ace and Chance&Harper. To be honest, I adore them both (although I prefer the former more)

Daphne&Ace are all cutesie and sweet. It is cheesy at times, but my heart melts anyway because I’m a sucker for cheesiness. It’s a bit of insta-love (on one side anyway), but their relationship does develop as they get to know one another. I love how they can relate to each other on being an “outsider” and they honestly respect and adore one another – weirdness and all. Don't expect any unnecessary teenage angst here. They're quite straight-forward.

Chance&Harper. Cuuute. They’re established, but I like seeing them.

Final Thoughts
I’m giving this book 4 stars. I genuinely love it. It’s just a whole lot of fun, and I’m interested in seeing how the plot will develop. There are many things that could be done with such a fun, creative setting, and the author ended this book at a point where you will definitely want to see what will happen to these funny, adorable characters next. I honestly would love to live in Spook (if when I die). And that's saying something - You know a book is good when you want to live in the same world as it.

NOTES: Also, random facts, but there are cute pictures at the start of each chapter, and next to the page numbers on each page, there are little ghosts. AWWWW.

REVIEWED BY BETH KATHERINE FOR READER'S FAVORITE

Spook is the first book in the Get Spooky series. It tells the story of paranormal investigator, Daphne Fitz, who believes in ghosts, demons, and pretty much everything but aliens—maybe. After all, the line needed to be drawn somewhere! Having just received her online parapsychology degree in the mail, Daphne decides to put her knowledge to work. At a crossroad in Ligonier, Indiana—one that is closest to her trailer—she summons crossroad demon Rakkason. (Much to his vexation.) Intrigued by Daphne’s haphazard ways, Rakkason indulges her request for an interview and the two end up bantering like old friends. Things go awry as Rakkason is summoned back to hell and Daphne finds herself dead. The now definitely dead Daphne finds herself in Spook, a sort of crossroads of the spirit world—not heaven, not hell, but a place where all types of monsters co-exist. Daphne takes to being dead like a duck to water, which isn’t all too shocking considering that she was an outsider while she was alive. While in Spook, Daphne befriends the relocated Rakkason and his boss Ace, Harper (a werewolf), and Chance (a ghostly cowboy). Together, Daphne and her ragtag crew of supernatural friends work toward saving the town from a curse. Will Daphne and her friends be able to save Spook, or is this the end of the afterlife as they know it?

Jinx’s debut novel, Spook, left me laughing, crying, and laugh-crying. It was so much more than I could have expected—a story of love, friendship, and learning to be yourself presented beautifully in this paranormal YA novel. Reminiscent of childhood favorites like Scooby Doo, Goosebumps, and Halloweentown, Spook is appropriate for a wide range of ages. I would recommend it for readers ages 8 to R.I.P. Gen X-ers will appreciate and get a good giggle out of the references to Depeche Mode. Daphne and her motley crew of friends are the meaning of #friendshipgoals. Although they come from different backgrounds (really, they could not be more different), they stick together through their trials (literally—they go through quite a bit to stop the curse) and tribulations. It is incredibly heartwarming seeing the character growth from beginning to end. Daphne, a full blown awkward turtle, finds herself and her self-esteem as she realizes her self-worth over the course of the book, aided of course by her newfound friendships, and her budding relationship with the charismatic demon Ace, son of the best friend of the Big Red guy himself! (I’ll be the first to admit I caught #Dace feels right away because his love for her is as pure as it gets—for a demon, of course.)

As you read Spook, you feel a sense of closeness to Jinx’s characters, as though they were your own friends. You’ll laugh, cry, and laugh-cry with them as I did. I loved Spook for its great storyline, the amount of fun I had while reading it, and the fact that once I was done I immediately wanted to read it again to catch up with my old friends—Daphne and crew. You know a book is good when you immediately feel a sense of sadness upon completion. To find out more about Daphne and friends, and whether they defeated the curse (or not!) you’ll have to read this book—you won’t regret it!

Y'ALL.

I already did a review of this book about a year ago but it was on my Tumblr, which— *nervous chuckle* — I deleted.

And guess who didn't salvage the book review first?

*points to self*

I know, guys. I know.

But that is why I'm here today to revisit the world of SPOOK— and let me tell you why this review is going to be 10x better:

1. This is the PUBLISHED, print version of the book— not the Wattpad version.
2. I'm also reviewing Dearly Departed, the 2nd + companion novel in the series (so it's a DOUBLE REVIEW!! Did someone say double trouble?)
3. This review is accompanied by a Book Talk Video— much like the one I did for Paper Wishes by Spencer Hoshino, so watch that too! Watch the SPOOK book talk here.

Settle in, friends. Grab those pumpkin chai lattes and light those candles. With Halloween coming up, this is THE ONLY book you're gonna wanna read. Trust me.

<><><>

The first time I read Spook, it INSTANTLY sucked me in and I could not stop laughing! I loved everything about it— the characters are sooo unique and you will definitely fall in love with them.

<><><>

The Premise:
Daphne Fitz just died, and has landed herself in Spook— it's a place between Heaven and Hell for supernatural creatures (including ghosts). Kind of like limbo, but not really, and the strangest part is that she didn't get to choose where she was going.

Everyone gets to choose. So why not her?

Before long, Daphne has befriended a cowboy, a werewolf, and two demons, and must fight to stop a coven of witches who are dead-set (lol geddit?) on destroying the town, while also trying to solve some of the mysteries surrounding herself.

What I Liked:

1. The characters— I know I mentioned this above (and I'm going to go into more detail below) but the characterization is just so well done. There are little quirks and characteristics, plus some characters have their own lingo, and each one is really unique based on their upbringing and species. It's super cool.

2. The writing style— much like the characters have interesting voices, so does the writer. The tone used is really relatable for young people and the writer is on trend with all the latest slang, making it a much more relatable and hilarious reading experience.

3. The romance— because this book has relationships you can really get behind. They're realistic and adorable and so relatable.

4. The typography— if you get a paperback copy of the book, it has little graphics everywhere! There are ghosts around the page numbers and character art!

What I Disliked:

It's actually really difficult to think of what could be improved in this book, but I do think the ending was maybe a tad bit dragged out. (And I'm almost 99% sure, from memory, that my problem with the Wattpad version was the ending NOT being dragged out enough, so that's ironic).

The only reason I had this issue is because I really wanted to see the gang take down the antagonist, but first we had to collect a bunch of ingredients and it sort of felt like we were getting delayed and sent on a speed tour to see Spook's finest species (which I would have liked to have seen scattered throughout the book a little more, rather than crammed into the end). At that point of the book, I didn't really care as much for all the spooky monsters because I was ready to see the antagonist get her butt kicked. BUT, in saying that, it was still a really good ending!

The Characters:
Daphne – Daphne is THE BEST. She's super cute, and such an interesting character. I like how before she came to Spook, she already had a fascination with all things spooky.
Ace – Ace is hilarious, and totally sweet (especially for a demon) I like his 'bad boy' vibes that he puts out to the universe, but I like even more than he's not so much a 'brooding' character, but just genuine in everything that he does. When he's grumpy, he's grumpy, and when he's happy, he's happy.
Chance – Chance is super loveable— you can't not love his sweet personality and can-do attitude.
Harper – Harper is the best gal pal you could ever wish for. She genuinely cares for her friends, looks out for them, and yet manages to be suave and collected at the same time. She's glam as it gets.
Rakkason – Rakkason is the actual definition of adorable and clumsy and I love it. I would sell my soul to Ace to have a Rakkason of my own.

The other characters, like Millie and Iris, were lots of fun too. I don't really have too many thoughts on them individually, but they definitely make the story more enjoyable!

Final Thoughts:
If you like humour, loveable characters, and cutesy mythical reads, then this is the book you've been needing for your entire life. I would recommend this (and HAVE recommended it on numerous occasions) to anyone.

Where Jinx is concerned, I am a super fan. Yes, yes, you all know that I'm her bff but BEFORE that I was a super fan. A shameless super fan. I have read every edition of Spook--from Wattpad to Swoon to this final print version. This version is the best yet. It is so, so funny. I laughed, I may have cried (from laughing), and then I laughed some more. Jinx is a witty writer who probably should have been a comedian.

I know that there were readers from Wattpad who were worried about the revised version of Spook, and I am here to alleviate those fears. Not only is it very reminiscent of the Wattpad version that we enjoy and have come to treasure, it is also double the length and twice as funny. (Did I mention it was funny? Because it's preetttty dang funny.)

Also, there's just about 1,000% more Rakkason in this book. For those of you who don't know he is my favorite character in the whole series. And, well... you know...

I would totally not be mad if Jinx wrote a whole spin-off with me and Rakkason, tbh. ;)

I've been a fan of Spook since I first read it on Swoon Reads--it's a shame they didn't pick it. They really missed the boat with this one. Spook is a refreshingly funny YA novel that will leave you laughing until the very end. This book stands out in a genre that has oversaturated the YA market. A fun and charming book, it is appropriate for a wide range of ages. I would recommend it for ages 10 and up, although the younger audience may not "get" jokes that were written for the older Millenial generation.
