Rate this book
“An empathetic, personal and practical approach for parents craving relief from the wide-ranging childhood impact of ADHD.”
—Mark Bertin, M.D., author of  Mindful Parenting for ADHD This book is for you. Most of us need help to overcome the challenges of parenting a child with ADHD. Watching your bright, vibrant child struggle with ADHD can make you feel helpless, especially when you don’t have the tools to help them succeed. There is a great deal of help available for children with ADHD, but there simply aren’t enough resources for parents of ADHD children—and you need support just as much as your child. The National Institute of Mental Health recognizes that frustration, blame, and anger are common in families with ADHD children. Children with ADHD need guidance and understanding from parents to reach their full potential. Yet it can feel impossible to manage the challenges you experience as a parent in order to be the support your child needs. Diane Dempster and Elaine Taylor-Klaus are ADHD coaches, educators, and the cofounders of ImpactADHD. They started off just like you, feeling frustrated and lost about how to help their ADHD children—and how to take care of themselves as well. Since that time, they have become national leaders in the world of ADHD, representatives of the voice of parents, and the go-to experts for parenting children with ADHD. They have successfully armed thousands of parents with the tools they need to help themselves and their children with ADHD. In  Parenting ADHD Now!  Diane and Elaine combine their practical know-how and professional expertise to offer immediate, actionable strategies you can use to guide and support your ADHD child compassionately and effectively. The material presented in this book is grounded in three main You can dramatically improve life for your child with ADHD. With  Parenting ADHD Now!  you will learn to set healthy limits, find compassion and acceptance, change your habits, laugh instead of cry, understand instead of yell, and thrive instead of just survive.

I highly reccomend this book for anyone who has a child in their life with ADHD. It is easy to understand but explains the nitty gritty of what makes these kids tick and what you can do to better reach them.

A great resource. Explanations that help neuro-typical parents understand their ADHD kids (and a reminder for ADHD parents like me who see themselves getting upset at their kids for repeating their same behaviors). In addition to perspective, the book has a lot of good tools that make communication more effective, even for really little kids (but a majority of what’s discussed will be more useful for school aged kids). One of those books I’m sure I’ll reread many times over the years...

Fantastic ADHD Book

Elaine Taylor-Klaus and Diane Dempster have written a fantastic book about how to effectively parent children with ADHD. I found their coach-approach to parenting refreshing and effective. Part 2 of the book provides many straight-forward, user-friendly, and innovative strategies. Parents will feel empowered and inspired to utilize the helpful tools and perspectives to improve their relationships with their children and better manage ADHD. A must-have book. Great job!

One of the most helpful books in my treatment collection. I refer to this all the time with clients and parents. Recommended for adult clients and parents AFTER they've had psychoeducation counseling with a qualified therapist, read an introductory book by Dr. Hallowell or Barkley, or have otherwise learned enough about the intricate neurobiology and relational connections critical for effective and compassionate treatment of ADHD-related issues.

Practical support

Enjoyed this book practical approach in supporting kids with attentional challenges. Not as obsessed with justifying the underlying neurological differences.

One caveat: while Taylor-Klaus has an ADHD brain herself, she sometimes uses medicalized language, rather than promoting a neurodiversity lens. So if you are trying to teach yourself to view ADHD as a difference instead of a deficit, maybe leave this book until a little later in your process.

That detail aside, I highly recommend this book for both ADHD and neurotypical parents of ADHD kids. Taylor-Klaus breaks down the 6 areas of executive functioning that are impacted by ADHD: managing tasks, attention, effort, emotion, information, and action. She then presents the domains of attention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, organization, and emotionality; discusses which areas of executive function cause differences in behavior within those domains; and presents numerous strategies for managing each domain in the current environment of a Western nation in the 21st century.

Let me say: there are seven different ADHD brains living in my house, and we are all very different. We have different struggles, and different combinations of strategies are helpful for each of us. Many of the strategies that work for me I've discovered on my own over the years, but having them explicitly named and described here makes it easier for me to communicate them to my kids. Other strategies I've tried and forgotten because they weren't useful to me, but they might work for my kids. And many of the strategies are new to me, and they might be helpful for me or my kids! So there's a lot of good info here.

This book does give you some practical and easy strategies to help your kid out and to parent in a more peaceful home. However, it's also very grim and you might need to make sure you aren't reading it in any sort of emotionally fragile state because they really drive home that your child is disabled, your child is unlikely to grow out of their disability, and your expectations for their future will need to drastically change. It felt like I could hear all of the doors slamming shut on my daughters future options, so that was tough.

I took 3 books on parenting ADHD out of the library and started reading them all. This is the one that grabbed me. It's simple, cutting to the chase without the beating-around-the-bush that so many books use to fill a page count. The strategies outlined are simple and effective, although not a panacea. Nor do the authors pretend to have all the answers -- they're simply providing suggestions from their experience. I took notes, but fully expect to reread this book again in a few years.

I don’t have a child with an ADHD diagnosis, but we are struggling with a few behaviors that are closely related to those seen in ADHD children (specifically emotional disregulation and feeing those emotions so intensely). This books had awesome suggestions for helping kids in general, not just those with ADHD. Honestly, when I read this book, it made me believe that ADHD is a spectrum and I found myself experiencing some of these same traits. Very helpful suggestions!

Terrible, doesn't provide practical information on how to manage a Childs ADHD. The authors push self reflection without any real practical strategies or examples. Each section is merely a repeat of the previous with more 'pause and reflect' discussion.

Lots of helpful tips. I think I'll be referencing this one again if we feel stuck. I'm not completely sure my daughter does have ADHD, but she certainly has some tendencies that way and I gleaned some good ideas for helping her focus and manage her emotions.

Great little book for a parenting tune-up! I read it with one smart, hyperactive, talkative child in mind, but the hundreds of practical tips apply to most energetic children.

3.5, rounded up to 4- very readable and well-organized primer on things to try with the ADHD-affected family with the understanding that not everyone can totally revamp their lifestyle and parenting personality overnight. I found the recommendations for how to approach/vet the process of finding and prioritizing all the treatment providers useful.
