A Fugitive Mate… Emma Wilkes is on the run from her ex-boyfriend—with a stolen laptop containing evidence of his crimes. When she meets a hot guy in a truck stop bar, she pretends to be his date, hoping to throw her ex’s hit squad off her trail.
A Desperate Alpha… Alpha wolf Jace Monroe has only weeks to find a true mate and bond with her, or he’ll lose his pack and his territory. To him, the stranger coming on to him is just a delectably curvy distraction from his troubles. But to his wolf, she’s the one.
One Wild Night So when Emma steals Jace’s motorcycle and vanishes from his motel room in the middle of the night, Jace vows to track her down and find out who she really is—a conniving con woman, or the mate he’s been waiting for all his life.
But can he find her—and persuade her to trust him—before time runs out for both of them?
Silverlake Shifters Smokin’ hot shifter men with hearts of gold; the strong, passionate women who love them; secrets, lies and danger; naughty, steamy love scenes—and happily ever afters.
Content warning: This book contains naughty language and steamy love scenes, and is intended for adults only.
After Emma and Jace spend a night together, she slips out and steals not only his motorcycle, but all of his clothes too. The first have was so exciting and fun to read about but I didn’t love it as much after that. Once they were together again, things seemed to be moving much quicker and I wasn’t a fan that it felt like Emma was backed into a corner and kind of forced to accept the mating bond out of guilt.
This book was a little over 200 pages but it did read more like a novella than a novel. It had some fast jumps in the progression of the story, their relationship, and a lot of questions or things left unexplained. There were also things that just felt a little off to me like some one liners, then having unprotected sex without even blinking or having a conversation, and the FMC giving off mild pick-me vibes.
All those smaller things being said, I still liked this story and really hit the wolf paranormal spot. I am excited to continue reading this series.
However the H in this story was masculine but also a but of a wuss in a way. I'm used to TS Joyce's shifter alphas that have self doubt about their emotional short comings...but when it comes to their brute strength or capabilities they never question their strength (especially when protecting the woman they love.)
I wanted him to be an all around man, which I know is sexist in a way. Men can be vulnerable too, and I love a vulnerable man but something here was lacking in the masculine department.
The female heroine was great...a lil far fetched and self sacrificing but without her and her objectives we wouldn't have a story.
In the end, this book had to be somewhat entertaining bc it kept me intrigued enough to finish it but I remember feeling let down or underwhelmed a few times.
I MAY be curious enough to read another story from this series... too early to tell.
This was much better than I thought it would be, probably one of the better shifter romances I've read in a while. My main criticism is that the plot did feel a little rushed and there was some instalove vibes between the couple. However, I was able to overlook given how much sense the two made together and how much I enjoy the plot and the wider world. I will likely pick up the sequel.
I really debated on whether to give this book a three or a four. I ended up deciding on a four because I liked that the heroine, Emma, never gave up. She also didn't jump at the chance to be the alpha female in a werewolf pack, which seems very sensible to me. However, the timeline is very compressed and it all comes together pretty quickly.
Emma is running from her ex-boyfriend, Alexander Grant. She found out that he is a crook, stole his laptop, and went on the run to her friend Griz who has FBI contacts.
Jace is the alpha werewolf of his pack. To keep control of his territory he has to bond with and mate with someone within three years or the council will let other packs take his land. At this point Jace has three months left. He's dated multiple shifter women and liked some of them, but his wolf has rejected all of them. Jace is desperate not to lose his territory and let his packmates down.
Jace was fine. He is a bit alpha and a bit beta in his relationships. He is alpha when he commands his wolves. I liked that he isn't a dictatorial jerk. I liked Emma. She was tough, resilient, and intelligent.
In Fugitive Mate Jase Monroe and Emma Wilkes meet in a truckstop where she encourages him to pick her up to hide from the hired killers her ex-boyfriend has sent after her and his laptop with his unlawful business dealings. She is on her way to a friend with close connections to the FBI and wants to turn in the information she has gather to start an investigation to stop her ex from hurting any more good people.
The actions from being chases, shot at, knifed and much more is intense. The romance when Jase finds out that Emma, a human is his fated mate is full of fun, sweet romance and getting Emma to accept first he is a wolf shifter and second that she belongs with him the rest of her life in this magical bond with not only him but his entire pack and the land that belongs to them.
I loved the action. I loved the sweet romance and the support of his friends, brothers and pack plus her friend Grizzly too. The character development was good and the story moved fast and I read it in one evening (couldn't put it down).
I love a good shifter romance, this was short but sweet. And true to my nature Grizz is my fav character - well and the 2nd, who can resist that banter! It turned a lot more funny mid way and I was living for it. Excitement, heat, howling... I'm down with that. I've never had an experience in the book written in quite that way before (shifter wise) and I quite enjoyed it, when you read as many as I do it's sometimes shocking to get something new thrown in.
Sweet and sexy shifter story. Jace and Emma made a great couple. There was plenty of action throughout but I would have liked more comeuppance for the bad guys. It didn't really feel resolved. Nice ending though.
Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 (rounded up for gr) Spice: 🌶️🌶️ Narration Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🎤 Hollie Jackson 📚 single POV, 3rd person Series: Silverlake Shifters, book 1 Do I recommend this book: 👍 Will I read the next book in the series: 🤷♀️👍
My Rating System 5 stars--WOW 4 stars--would read again 3 stars--was good, won't read again 2 stars--read it, but didn't enjoy it 1 star--didn't finish, it was so awful
Do I need to read books before this one: no Cliffhanger: no
Summary Emma stops at a bar to get a new stolen car and to call Grizzly, her surrogate dad who has FBI contacts. She's running from her former boyfriend who she discovered has been robbing artists, accruing millions in stolen royalties. She has his laptop and his passwords, she just has to get to Grizzly without getting caught by Alexander's minions. She sees a handsome man, is drawn to him, and decides to flirt with him so she's *not* seen by the minion at the bar.
Jace must bond a mate in the next 7 weeks or lose his pack's territory. He knows the woman flirting with him is dishonest somehow, but his wolf is very interested. He takes her to his motel room at her request, confronts her. They end up sleeping together.
When Emma wakes, she learns her artist friend was almost killed by faulty equipment in a hang gliding accident. They'd flown just last week, and she'd checked Duke's equipment. She takes Jace's motorcycle, his phone, and his pants so he is delayed following her. She doesn't want him hurt, and she's got to get to Grizzly before she's caught and anyone else gets hurt.
Evaluation The suspense was really well done, and lasted through the entire book. The time is condensed (the book happens in 24 hours), the need to keep moving is high (minions are on her tail, shooting), and stakes are high (life and death).
This paranormal world, as Jace explains to Emma and as we see through their eyes, is slightly different than most shifter romances. Sex doesn't instantly create the mate bond; there has to be emotion behind it; that's a nice twist. I really enjoyed reading about how the mating magic affects Emma, and about the alpha having the pack and the territory bonded to him.
While the story ends without a cliffhanger, we don't know what happens to Alexander or the FBI case. Maybe that's the next book?
Recommendation This is a solid paranormal romance and a solid suspense. If you like those, enjoy. If you don't like shifter romances, don't read.
Favorite Quotes The piece of crap Malibu whined louder than a guy forced to ask for directions.
This dude was pretty damn prepared for someone who was clearly no Boy Scout.
“The way shifters see it, the magic doesn’t *make* us feel what we feel. It just recognizes a bond that already exists—that once-in-a-lifetime chance to be with the person who’s perfect for you. Who loves you and inspires you, and makes you the best version of yourself.”
Possible Triggers (spoilers) Sex: multiple scenes Language: 44 F words, 7 Lord's name in vain, 42 S words Violence: chases, gun fights, knife fights, animal attacks
Liked the storyline and didn’t want to put it down. Took off a star for grammar issues because it was distracting but I reason to not read the book. I can’t wait to read the next book.
I love this book. It was fast paste which I love in a book... Here is a highlight from the book...followed them. Jace was shaking his head. “Rafe takes some getting used to,” he said. “I like him,” Emma replied. She did. There was nothing phony about Rafe. And he made her laugh. Jace settled down next to her on the couch. “Good thing,” he said. “Because you’re stuck with him now. You’re stuck with all of us.” She could hear the uncertainty in his voice. She snuggled up next to him. “Yeah. A hot alpha wolf who’d lay his life on the line for me. That sure sucks.” He picked up her hand and ran his fingers up and down the back of it. “Come on,” he said. “I’m serious. I know you only bonded with me because you thought I was going to die. And now it’s done. I couldn’t stand it if you were unhappy.” She thought of his words in the cave, talking about his potential mate. I want to make her happy. She gave him a long, considering look. She could reassure him all she wanted, but she sensed he needed more than that. She got up and went over to the table where she’d left her bag, digging through it for what she wanted. There it was—Jace’s mate-hunting journal. She found a pen, and then she sat down, opened it to a clean page, and started writing. Jace was watching her from the couch. “What are you doing?” She held up a finger to silence him. “Wait a second.” She finished writing a few lines, and then turned the page over and wrote something else. “Okay,” she said. She sat back down next to him, snuggling in under his arm. “Since it’s important to you to make your mate happy, I started your list for you.” She opened up the notebook and spread it in front of him. It read: Coffee—cream, two sugars. Favorite flower—bird of paradise (tropical flowers—always a good choice) Favorite ice cream flavor—Moose Tracks. Favorite person—Jace Monroe Favorite alpha wolf—Jace Monroe Favorite guy to get crazy on a motorcycle with—Jace Monroe Favorite guy to get crazy in bed with—Jace Monroe Favorite sexual fantasy—that’s for me to know and you to find out He was smiling by the time he got to the end of the list. He turned to her, his eyes beginning to shade to gold. “I can’t wait to find out that last one,” he said in the sexy growl she loved. “You better not tell Rafe.” “Rafe finds out everything. He should work for the CIA.” Emma sighed. “So they weren’t kidding about that ‘no privacy’ thing?” Jace shook his head, stroking her hair. “It’s going to be different than what you’re used to.” Emma straddled his lap and slid her arms around his neck, looking into his warm, gold-flecked, worried eyes. This man had made her cause his own—he’d fought for her, bled for her, taken bullets for her, nearly given his life for her. He’d believed in her and relied on her strength when he was wounded. And after all that, his only fear was that she wouldn’t be happy. She kissed him softly. “I love you, Jace Monroe,” she said. “We’re gonna be awesome together. It says so in the book.” Jace’s forehead furrowed in a frown. “I didn’t see that part. Where?” Emma flipped over the page and showed him the last thing she’d written. Soulmate and safe harbor: Jace Monroe Outcome: Bonded for life. (Insanely happy.) He tossed the book aside and hugged her tight. “I love you, too,” he whispered, and claimed her lips in a forever kiss.
Wow! This is the first book I've read by Anastasia Wilde but it definitely won't be the last. In fact, I've already downloaded book two. There are very few PNR books that capture and hold my attention the way this series opener did. It's like a breath of fresh air, and left me wanting much more of the Silverlake Pack. Jace Monroe and two of his friends worked for ten years to earn the money needed to purchase Silverlake Mountain, but now he's on the brink of losing the land and his pack. For the past two years he's searched for his mate, without success. Now there's only two months remaining and he's on his way home after another failed interview, stopping for the night at a motel with a bar. Emma Wilkes, "Danger Girl", loves taking risks. So when she realizes her boyfriend, Alexander Grant, is cheating people out of millions of their hard earned dollars, she reacts by stealing his car and computer and going on the run from him and his security force. The Ferrari she sends off a cliff, but she steals another car and makes it from Nashville to Colorado, where she stops at a motel bar to make a landline call to the one person she can trust. In disguise as a blonde "Darlene", she lets the handsome biker sitting nearby buy her a drink while she waits for the appointed time to make the call. Jace is confused when his wolf perks up at the blonde wig wearing human nearby. His wolf has shown no interest in any of the shifter females they've met, so why her? But it soon becomes apparent she is in trouble and that the men pursuing her are nearby. He doesn't want trouble with humans and she doesn't want to get him hurt. But fate has plans of her own.
Emma is on the run from a very influential man who just happens to be her ex-boyfriend. She has evidence of his less than reputable dealings and is hoping to expose him for what he is; all she has to do is pass the information she has to her contact. With her ex’s goons on her tail, she’s got to keep moving and try to fly under the radar. Jace is on a mission of his own; he only has a few months to find his true mate, else he’ll lose his pack and his home. Emma is a distraction he doesn’t need, but once their paths cross, he’ll have no choice but to chase her too.
I love a good shifter story, thankfully this turned out to be just that. Having not read this author before I wasn’t sure what I was going to get and was pleasantly rewarded for my efforts. The plot itself is quite good and different to any I’ve read before. Emma, our heroine, was well constructed making her a believable character when reading. She’s brave, skilled and a complete adrenaline junky. She’s the kind of person you’d want to be friends with and would likely admire. Then there’s Jace, who seems like the perfect guy; kind, loyal, protective. I love how their relationship develops despite the lack of trust on both sides. There are also a few nice character twists and a unique twist on the mating/pack bond.
I’ll definitely be continuing with this series as I like the writer’s style. I’m also hopeful that the plot will carry over some, as it was slightly open-ended.

DNF at 24%, so no star rating. This was just disappointing from the first page, where there is a tired joke about men not being able to ask for directions. That joke was cliche in the 90's. Amazon says this was published in 2016.
What follows is a poor excuse for worldbuilding, with 6 or 7 full pages of straight info dump. No flashbacks, not even telling their story to someone else. Just exposition. I'm not going to introduce you to my friends when I could just list their names. Here is my tragedy, this is my goal, this is why I can't trust women. Bam! Bam! Bam!
She describes him as wearing a long sleeve shirt with a black leather vest. Uh, is it an Affliction brand shirt, because it sounds like the way my dad dresses when he hits a bar... He's in his 70's. 👀
The rest is straight SPOILER territory so watch out.
The leads have a strange connection, first it's straight slutty, then they have a serious talk and it goes... odd. There is a non-sexual shoulder massage, a nightmare, and then like, a true lovemaking session, like he's going to propose. They have fully penatrative sex, without condoms or discussion of STIs or pregnancy. He does NOT "pull out". WTF? You accused this woman of being a prostitute that was planning to rob you 2 hours ago.
When she digs through his stuff and finds all of his files saying "terminated" (why would he write that?) I just started laughing and deleted the book out of my kindle. No time for this.
In fact, I've read nearly all of Anastasia Wilde's books, but randomly and I do really like to read connected series in order so I've started again from the first, Fugitive Mate. I think that tells how much I enjoy reading these series. What I like is that all the men, whilst looking perfect and strong and being good and courageous to the core, they're all damaged or broken in some way, which makes them endearing. Until they meet their fated mate, which, when the story is complete, makes them both whole and healed. The romantic in me loves that. However, it isn't just fluff, all the characters have a depth to them, and a history that makes me want to read their stories. They each have their challenges to face, which I find engaging. I particularly love the way the characters in all the different series are interconnected, and join with each other in certain stories. That really makes all the books one whole series and the groups of books, sub series. I have enjoyed each and every one so far. Two criticisms - the graphic sex gets somewhat repetitive. I am by no means a prude, but after the first love making you get the picture. I have skipped a page or two in most of the books, to get on with the story. Second - I don't know who designs the covers, but although the men are showing off their muscles, they don't look much at all as I imagine. I'd rather see a bit more of the beasts!
This is the first book that I've read from this author and I was really impressed with her writing style, I felt it flowed along nicely, though probably a little shorter in length then what I usually prefer, still really enjoyable though. Jace was totally swoon worthy!!! He wasn't your usual domineering jerk of an alpha, he actually had a really sweet side to him that I found endearing! Emma was awesome, finally a h who was adventurous, smart and capable!!! Loved her and that she didn't jump straight at the chance to be an alpha's mate to a pack of wolves, her hesitation made sense to me. Jace and Emma had great chemistry together that didn't feel forced and I love how their relationship developed. What I really found unique was this authors take on the mating bond and I loved how it not only included the intended mate but the whole pack and lands. Some really interesting secondary characters that brought another great element to the story and I am really looking forward to reading more on them. I've just went and picked up the next in the series as I really enjoy this authors writing style and I feel like the plot was left open a little at the end. Overall a great start to a series that I look forward to continuing.
The start of a series about wolf shifters. It has been a while since I have read anything about shifters or by Anastasia, so it is a welcome respite.
The world building is good and lays the foundation that I hope it will become more compete as the series continues. The characters are solid, but I wish there was more descriptions of them. I am a visual reader, meaning it is like a movie that plays in my mind when I am reading. When the descriptions aren’t in-depth (or complete) it becomes more difficult to get, and stay, into the story.
Contains an immediate attraction between Jace and Emma with themes of insta-love and fated soul mates.
⛔️ There are a few scenes that may be triggers for sensitive readers, these include some adult language, semi-steamy intimate scenes and violence such as kidnapping, abduction, fighting, murder / death, sabotage, theft, money laundering, coercion, etc.
There are also a few grammatical errors, but nothing too egregious. These were mainly comprised of incorrect word choice (to vs so), transposed verbiage and missing words. I am mentioning these for readers such as myself that visualize the story as it is read, because errors interrupt the flow.
This book was one wild ride after another; I read this book in 1 day. Jace is on his way home after spending 2 years on the road looking for a mate & her finds one where he least expects; in a bar in a town that he's passing through. But, what he doesn't know is her real name, if she's really running away from a bad ex-boyfriend & if she's out to scam him. But, he does find all that out & more by the end of this book.
Emma, once she finds out what a scumbag her boyfriend is he becomes an ex; however he doesn't take no for an answer especially after she steals his laptop & passwords in order to get the evidence to the correct authorities so that they can start an investigation into his business. While on the run she meets Jace & little by little falls in love with him but also tries not to get him &/or his pack hurt or killed by her ex. But, not everything goes to plan; you'll have to read this book to find out what happens as I'm not going to tell you anymore about what happens. This was a very good book with fast-paced action, good vs bad plot & some sex scenes.
Adrenaline junkie Emma Wilkes thought she’d found the perfect man in Alexander Grant but she’s never been quite so wrong. When Emma looked behind the public face, she found a billionaire thug who wanted her ignorant of his business and under his thumb at all times. Alexander was more mistaken than Emma.
Starting a new pack is never easy and new alpha Jace Monroe is having more trouble than most. Unpleasant memories of his original pack being decimated ten years ago, for two years he’s traversed the country searching for his mate, no luck and if he doesn’t find her by the rapidly approaching deadline, Jace will lose all he’s gained so far.
After the pair share a night, Jace is over the fact that Emma is human, he and his wolf are determined to protect Emma from whatever she’s running from. Emma adds Jace to the list of men to stay away from and steals his motorcycle. Jace gives chase, Emma affects him like no other.
Having read this fun series out of order it was good to see the start, though each related fast-paced outing is a contained, satisfying read. Rating: 4.5stars
I’ve read many shifter stories over the years. This book is one of the better ones. The story kept my interest and had me turning the pages quickly. I generally don’t care for insta-love stories, but there’s something about Jace and Emma that made it seem natural and easy. They have a chemistry that fairly sizzles throughout. My only complaint is the slightly unresolved issue with Emma’s ex. I don’t know if the story arc continues in the next book or not. I guess I’ll just have to read it and find out. Anastasia Wilde is a new author to me. I’m glad I took a chance on her and read her work. I look forward to reading more of her books in the series. Due to the explicit scenes, I don’t recommend this book to readers under the age of 18. However, if you love sexy shifters of any kind, or paranormal romances in general, I highly recommend this book.
This is one of those stories where I’m not too convinced that the MCs are right for each other. MMC is an alpha wolf who needs to find his true mate to claim his territory so he can finally settle down and be the leader of his pack, something he’s spent a lifetime working towards. FMC is the self-styled “Danger Girl” who is currently on the run from her latest bad decision. If it weren’t for MMC’s wolf’s insistence that she’s the one, there’s absolutely no reason she’d make a good Luna or any personality traits in common at all, really. The book is so fast-paced with the FMC dodging baddies at every turn, it doesn’t really give you time to contemplate what the MCs are doing together. This makes for a decent thriller but a mediocre romance. The important moments in their love story are overshadowed or rushed by the more imminent needs of the plot.
Emma, why would you not jump at the chance to be with Jace? I mean, hot, caring, alpha - what’s not to like? But of course, Emma can’t just agree. Until he’s on death’s door. Then she’s on death’s door. It was a lot of drama in the end, and perhaps because the author wants you to read the next books about the rest of the pack, there’s no epilogue or anything to make the HEA satisfying.
As far as shifter books go, there are definitely much better ones out there - Suzanne Wright, for instance, has a ton of shifter series books that are more well developed and while they are connected series, the ends are more satisfying. So I can’t quite recommend this one. It wasn’t bad, but it also wasn’t all that good either. Forgettable and a bit of a letdown.
I won’t continue this series, but may give this author another try with a different series.
An action-packed romance. Unfortunately I made the mistake of thinking I could just read a chapter to start the book when I should have been going to sleep. It was a very long day at work today.
Obviously I found this to be a real page-turner. I liked Emma, she was not afraid to do what she needed to. I wouldn't have minded a stronger alpha but then Jace was new to the role and you can see the potential for him to develop into such a character. I guess he just had too much doubt.
It had strong supporting characters and you want to read their stories too, I'll bet Rafe ends up with someone interesting!
I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.
5 STARS for this well written paranormal romantic that is an electric read that is hard to put down. Excitement is abound in this Novella with high speed motorcycle interstate chases, with traffic and guns in my, hired armed goons, huge stand offs & face offs with weapons and between goons & wolf pack more than once. All of the above should wet your appetite to read this entertaining story but if you are wavering let's throw in a grissily. Finally the magic of alpha mating to land and to pack is exciting and different; then to top off any paranormal romance is the hot sex. WARNING: 17& Up.
