Rating the whole series. I quit on chapter 950/~1300.

This was a great 5 star book until chapter 920, when it lost its way and the main character felt like a different person.

For the first few million words this book was good. The characters were varied, consistent, and interesting. The world building was minimal and served to enhance the story of the characters. The story was interesting and, although there are repeating elements, the interactions between the characters kept things fresh and interesting as the main character was always meeting new people and/or the same people in different contexts.

The reason I quit is that the main character completely changed.
Up until the 900s the main character feared death and wanted to live forever. He got into lots of interesting conflict, but it was always him being dragged into it. Yes, he took risks, but it was always him making the best out of an anyways bad situation. The author attempts to show a transition into more of a risk taker using dialogue, where the main character expresses joy at having done exciting things, but the mc never goes looking for trouble. His catchphrase at the end of every situation is "nothing is more valuable than my poor little life."

However, in chapter 900, the main character suddenly goes looking for trouble in a TRIAL BY FIRE to get a longevity increasing medicine. Excuse me? The main character, who has been dragged kicking and screaming through the past 2,000,000 words, is now looking for trouble? No. This isn't the same person.
"But Alex, he was changing as a person, and this is a continuation of that change."
It's too drastic though. Previously he was talking about having fun AFTER being in danger. That's very different compared to seeking death. He also took risks, but only after he was dragged into danger. The idea of, "I'm gonna die so I might as well look for more benefits just in case I live" is different from "lemme go kms instead of being happy at home."
"But Alex, he was trying to extend his longevity, so this is in character."
No. He already had a longevity of close to 5,000 years. It took him a dozen years to become the best pill master in the world, and another dozen to become the best necromancer. The idea that in 5,000 years, he can't make his own +1000 year lifespan pills or find a safer solution is ludicrous. He is uniquely suited to help himself live longer without dying.
"But Alex, he was looking for his girl."
He literally said that he stopped caring that much about her. Also he has relations with at least two other girls, who are frankly more fleshed out characters. He also isn't one of those "sacrifice everything for love" types of main characters. He doesn't even acknowledge things between himself and people he boinked, so it's out of character for him to get himself killed for a girl.

Also I don't care about this arc.
Every other arc had high stakes, but this arc has "cool pill lmao"

A suprisingly fun introduction to xianxia webnovels for me.
I was drawn into this by the quality of the translation, whilst other books in the genre are all but unreadable in english A Will Eternal is treated to a translation that I'd hold on par with the professional translations I've read, capturing the tone of the novel rather than just trying to directly translate every single word.
If the translation is what drew me in it's the protagonist that kept me, A Will Eternal follows what I take to be the most traditional approach to the genre, having our hero immediately enrolled in a sect (all but identical to the magic schools of our western fantasy novels) and then gradually moving out into the world as they advance in power. A Will Eternal takes this generic approach and makes it unique by having a protagonist who is not a noble hero but instead a class clown/troublemaker type who is motivated by existential dread rather than pure ambition.
Overall this was a very fun read that avoided dragging because of the frequent bouts of humour and novel solutions that were all made possible because of the character given to the protagonist.

I found this novel back in 2017. By then, I was tired of the typical Chinese novel protagonist. These self-righteous, how-dare-you-look-down-on-me, overly serious protagonists... or these simply overpowered ones, that just because they are OP the author thinks they can get away with the fact that their protagonists have the emotional range of a lettuce... For me, Bai Xiaochun was a gush of fresh air. The guy does not take himself seriously, and he is not all that worried about making a joke out of his image (and if sometimes he is, it's in a silly way).

Er Gen, in general, is an amazing author, so all his novels are "fresh air" after reading the same storyline over and over again (sorry, but I believe some Xianxia authors just copy-paste plot lines between themselves...). A Will Eternal stands out then, for the simple fact that it does not take itself seriously, and I love it.

It's not the best I've ever read, and I do like other Er Gen novels more, but this one is my "return-to" after reading novels where protagonists take themselves far too seriously and I’m fed up with them. (And sadly, the ending did feel kinda rushed!)

Where to start?...

I. LOVE. THIS. BOOK. !!!

Bai Xiaochun is the funniest, cutest protagonist ever!!!

I started getting hooked on Chinese light novels (translated) last year. Whenever I read them, I forget the time and I feel like I'm living in a fantasy world every single time. I don't usually read books that are too long and focused on one person for the entire series but Chinese light novels (the ones I read) made me interested on it.

Our protagonist Bai Xiaochun started as a mortal who realizes his dream to live forever. He wanted to live forever and very much terrified at dying. On the first book, we are told of his exploits as he try to reach immortality. He started as a servant on the Spirit Stream Sect and tried to work his way up the hierarchy.

In the Sect, he met a lot of people, made friends and enemies and tried his best to not mess up.

I won't go into details and let you guys experience this world untainted (haha).

Have I mentioned I love this book? X)

VERY MUCH RECOMMENDED!!!

Funniest Chinese Wuxia/Xianxia book I have come across, it stands out among its peers.

The review is for all 8 books comprising 1314 chapters. Also, it is one of the better off translated works in the medium, comes off as more polished, professional than just a fan translation.

Loved the protagonist and his characterization, easily one of the most hilarious guy I have come across. I must have chuckled out loud many a time while reading his antiques and shenanigans. The books got a great plot, world-building, characters and pacing. The humour and fast past paced action make for a page-turner. The first action sequence was one of the best I have read, heroic, gory and intense.

Like other thick books in the genre, it does not feel repetitive even while being so, as they use repetitive stuff in cracking jokes instead of the overall plotline.

This is one of the books I might take up again for a re-read.

Simply put, this Xianxia novel is absolutely HILARIOUS. I laughed so hard crying that I had to stop reading many times just to compose myself! (This review is for all 7 volumes)

Compared to other wuxia/xianxia main characters, Bai Xiaochun, is refreshing. Many mc's cultivate to become strong for reasons like revenge for clan, or just to be the best, but Bai Xiaochun is just a kid who fears death and cultivates so he can live forever. Of course the path of immortal cultivation is a dangerous one... This cowardly cultivator is thrust into numerous situations that threaten his "poor little life" and when his life is on the line beware. He can be a bit exasperating, vain, and an utter disaster to all around him when he goes into mad genius mode but imo those are some of the most hilarious moments, that will have you gasping for air while you laugh hysterically.

Definitely recommend if you want some hype, tension filled fights, and some good laughs .

Intensely creative, and a very welcome introduction to the xianxia genre. I almost quit around chapter fifty-- that was around when I'd already sunken two days into reading and realized that I wasn't anywhere near the end. No, I couldn't even properly say I had finished the beginning, and each chapter I read set off a fierce lurch of deja vu-- I'm tempted to call out the plot for being repetitive, but because Er Gen is so fantastic with building plot threads, the most I can say is that he could add more depth and variety to his themes. The prose is simple, but just what I need at this exact moment, as I am refining my ideas about shifting the burden of imagination between the writer and reader. At times, I find myself marveling at how Er Gen transitions from idea to idea, moving from introspection into external scene.

First - the beginning of the book made me laugh all the time. Later in the book not as much. There was things that didn’t make sense and was verging on just plain dumb. Bai Xiaochun pill creating for example - he would try creating in pill formulas. Instead of only trying out a dozen or so at a time, he would do hundreds than they would blow up. It didn’t make sense other than following Bai Xiaochun was a walking disaster waiting to happen.
The other thing is at the end, somethings are left to the reader. I’m the type who likes things more spelled out. The eternal mother is another questionable aspect of the story that I’m a bit confused on, as well as the whole river of time scene. Yes, I’m being vague for a reason - too big of a spoiler.
Otherwise the Journey that Bai Xiaochun takes is enjoyable to read about.

Review of the entire series

One of the best Xianxia series of all time. A perfect blend of action and humour that keeps you hooked and laughing all through. The pacing is relentless and we are treated to one fantastic book after the another.

I always have a pet peeve against Er Gen in his inability to write and crisp finish and end on a high rather than extending to a melancholic finale. But it's just my preference.

ISSTH is rated better, but for me... AWE series is the clear winner.

Deathblade deserves applause for one cracking English translation. Having read badly translated ones, I can especially appreciate the good work Deathblade has done here. Kudos!

This story is really great. The MC has a weird personality. Sometimes he's the greatest coward, sometimes he's the most valiant hero, and it all comes from the same source, a desire to live forever, a desire to protect.

He does a series of obsessive compulsive activities in the vein of a mad genius, and he sometimes achieves greatness while causing havoc with his neighbors without wanting to do so.

You'll get trapped into the story, and this is just the first arc, his introduction into a sect, and his growth within. And it gets even better in book two, from the few pages I already read.

Some okay parts that may have been worth exploring. Unfortunately, as always, this author feels the need to have 10s of chapters of (what he likely feels is awe inspiring) fight scenes that completely ruin plot progression. What's more unfortunate is that he decided to do this only 50 or so chapters into the book.

There was some minor potential for a good book but this was mostly annoying or exhausting to read even compared to his other works. Renegade Immortal and I Shall Seal the Heavens at least have very entertaining portions to break up the monotony.

Rating: 3.5 ★

I think this is the 4th book in Er Gen's Immortal, God, Demon, Devil and Ghost (仙神妖魔鬼) series, Bai Xiaochun being the Immortal.

This is a rating for the whole series. I can only say that Bai Xiaochun's personality isn't one that I really like, but I can see how it was kept consistent throughout. I want to scream thank you for that. That aside, the book was super rushed in the last 50 chapters and left me all confused lol

Dunno if I'll pick up the last book which I hear brings everything together.
