When therapist Lucas Stephen’s sister returns from a legendary Los Angeles hotel, she’s a shell of the artist she once was. Nearly catatonic, deteriorating rapidly, Michelle alarms Lucas by painting the same old-style straight razor over and over.
Heartbroken and frightened, Lucas resolves to find out what happened to her. With his beautiful—and psychic—colleague Della, Lucas travels to L.A., booking a room in the hotel Michelle stayed at.
They barely cross the threshold when Della senses evil. She sees bodies falling out of the sky. Broken dreams. Imprisoned nightmares. She begs Lucas to leave, but the hotel makes both time and truth shift, and when Lucas looks into the mirror in his sister’s room, he sees the straight razor—and is drawn to the bright, scarlet stain of fresh blood…
Bonnie Randall began scribbling stories in coil-bound notebooks around the age of 9—entertaining herself with tales of wicked dolls, evil grandmothers…and romantic knights and damsels who eventually lived Happily Ever After. All these years later, much has changed yet nothing has changed at all; Bonnie is still a sucker for true love, soulmates, smudgy shadows, and things that go bump in the night. A clinical social worker and professional speaker, Bonnie knows that relationships—whether with other people or with our environments—shape our souls and craft what, ultimately, is the ‘Human Experience’. And a Scorpio to the core, Bonnie’s passion is, well, passion—and mysticism, mysteries, creepiness, and all things arcane. Her stories explore what love looks like in the face of paranormal peril, for ‘Till Death Do Us Part’ is only an illusion, isn’t it? After all—we all know true love never dies…

Okay so I had no idea what to expect going into this novel because I've never read anything by the author before. But I wanted to read something creepy and this sure sounded creepy so after the author suggested on Twitter her story (I bought the book) I decided to give it a go. It's only $0.99 so not bad. I am so freaking glad I read this!
Now onto the actual book. Dang! From the start you get the feeling that stuff has gone down because through Lucas we see that his sister has lost her mind after returning from a hotel in LA. He wants to know just want happened and with the help of psychic Della they set off.
As soon as they step into the hotel Della senses things that shouldn't be. The story really skyrockets into scary from there! So hold on tight, leave the light on and prepare for your stay in this LA hotel... you might never leave.
This short story hooked me from the start! I couldn’t stop reading. Now I’m in bed seeing things in the dark and most likely won’t be sleeping. Very well done!
I don't like to leave 5 star reviews, because I rarely view a work as perfect. I couldn't find any flaws in this piece. It scared the daylights out of me, and I wish I hadn't read it late night on a cold, rainy evening right before bed, because I genuinely couldn't sleep after finishing it.
Horror is also not my genre, but I made an exception for Ms. Randall's writing. This isn't a slasher, there's no zombies or anything like that, but this is the kind of horror that made the Twilight Zone or Outer Limits back in the day, where you build a steady sense of dread and fear until a breaking point occurs.
The concept is neat, I kept thinking about the Tower of Terror ride in Disneyland (RIP there!), which actually plays nicely with this setting. Della was a good character, I liked her abilities and everything. If you are into suspenseful horror, this is probably the story of the year for you.
I'm not a reader of creeps and chillers but I know the author and read a full novel she wrote--Divinity and the Python. This is a different voice and didn't challenge my reading preferences as it short even for a novelette--a bit over 10k. In other words, it was perfect for an episode of the Twilight Zone in literary form.
Very interesting shorter read and I did enjoy it- however it went kind of fast and left me feeling like it needed more to it. There is lots of potential for this to be an epic read as the story-line and characters were very intriguing. I would have like to have seen more as I felt that we missed a big spot that could have ended up making this even better than it was. It was like this was happening one minute and then the next we were like UH WHAT?
This chilling novella has a couple of deft twists that will haunt you. Without posting spoilers, I will say that it is a powerful vibe, or thing, that could create the lures here for the central trap. The multiple plays on angels, lost and otherwise, as well as blindness and seeing are worth noshing on some more, perhaps in a full-length book. Randall has a special talent for evoking the resonances of place.
This will keep you up at night: first to finish and then again because of the thoughts running through your head thinking about what just happened. You may never look at staying in a hotel the same way again.
