The Downs

Rate this book
As the son of a wealthy man, Enitan Javed has spent his life frivolously - drinking, fighting, and making love. But after his father dies, Enitan is unjustly accused of murdering him and is given the harshest sentence possible. Judged irredeemable, he is banished to the Downs. As even young children know, nothing lives in the Downs except demons who delight in torturing the condemned. Brutalized by the men who transport him to his fate, Enitan has nothing left but his thirst for vengeance.

His plummet to the Downs nearly kills him, and Enitan finds himself battered and helpless in a frightening, mysterious land. But many surprises await him there, including a strange man named Rig. And the realization that the demons he must face aren't at all the ones he expected.

Kim Fielding lives in Oregon and travels as often as she can manage. A professor by day, at night she rushes into a phone booth to change into her author costume (which involves comfy clothes instead of Spandex and is, sadly, lacking a cape). This prompt is so abstract, so open-ended, the story could have been something dull, something expected. It could have been anything at all.

Leave it to Kim Fielding to build a stunning fantasy dystopia featuring an anti-hero, a scarred giant, and redemption found in a land of vicious fog and demons.

These demons are not the kind spewing fire and brimstone; these ones eat away at you slowly. They go with you and goad you in your sleep.

The Downs is exquisite. And I'm not just talking about the hauntingly sexy cover.

This is a quiet story; it lulls you into a state of anxious calm.

Humiliated, brutalized, and wrongly judged, Enitan seethes with anger and hurt. Rig can heal Enitan's body, but he can't heal Enitan's scars.

Rig's scars are visible. Rig works on a house he'll never finish and makes due in a hut with only birds and the relentless fog for company. Until he heals a man who can heal him back, a man he can't let go.

This is a story about revenge and redemption, about hatred and love, about realizing that the person who sentenced you really set you free.

Sometimes it takes a journey, a fall, a climb, and the tender, passionate care of one man to make you see that you were worth it all along, and that in losing you won.

"I don't want to die. But if I have a choice between a few minutes with you or an eternity without, well ... I choose you ... I will always choose you."

I'm star blind by "The Downs". Fielding took this prompt and turned it into beautiful thing to behold.

It's a story of redemption, vengeance and acceptance. Magnificently told with two well fleshed out characters who happen to find love along the way.

The Downs are unforgiving and dangerous, full of deadly creatures and the caustic fog. You can't be a delicate flower and call the Downs home. You have to have grit and guts, be a fighter.

Enitan is a fighter. He just has no cause, no purpose and his sister has betrayed him in so many ways. He is broken by more than just the fall into the Downs, but Rig only sees the good in him.

But can Enitan see the good in himself before it's too late?

Excellent world building and lovely prose so common to Fielding's work.

A marvelous addition to the LOR event. Thanks to the author and her team for participating.

“We don’t see the stars often in the Downs. When they do shine, it’s like a beautiful gift. Rare and unexpected. Everyone wanders outside to gape, and some people get so enamored they bump into houses and trees. We call them star-blind.... That’s me. You make me star-blind."

Enitan Javed is convicted of murdering his father and by order of the Judge, he is sentenced to be banished to the Downs, which is said to be filled with demons that torture the prisoners thrown there. Only when Enitan wakes up after his fall -- body battered and broken -- he finds that the Downs offers something very different than what he first imagined...

I honestly don't know how Fielding does it. I mean, she takes a rather vague prompt by the leash and writes something amazing in result. Although this is only a novella length (around 31k) The Downs is a rich story about two people finding love in the unlikeliest place. Rig is tender person, disregards his scars (kind of reminded me of Brute), and I loved him so. Enitan needs to be reminded about his self worth and to see something beautiful within the confines of The Downs -- he gets me little frustrated in the end when he can't see that and endanger the lovely Rig.

I also loved how Fielding described the differences between the Downs and the City. The Downs might be harsher and more dangerous in terms of the lands, with poisonous plants and killing fogs, but the people are kind and helpful. It's a place to heal and to reinvent yourself to be someone better. While The City, despite its facilities, offering light and brick and metal, but the people can be judgmental, selfish, prone to betray others, and well, alone and friendless....

After reading three Kim Fielding's stories in a row, I realize that this is the theme she often writes. Two imperfect people (often with physical scars) who heal each other and find love in process. It makes Fielding's stories character-driven, focuses on the journey of the relationship, even if it takes slower to get there. The Downs is a refined piece of story. Definitely one of my favorites from this year's Don't Read in the Closet Event

Have you ever read something and then felt a surge of guilt that it was....free?
This was TOO precious to come without a price tag.
This was TOO amazing to be a gift.
*fumbles to grab money*
I simply MUST pay for this treasure.
If I can't pay for this....I will try and pay it forward.

There is so much here to tell and so much I simply cannot tell.
I loved the cloudy story. The cover depicts a completely different vibe. Maybe it's just me but I was expecting something...kinky. This was far from kinky.
It was unexpected, unrestrained and unparalleled.
I loved Rig and Enitan.
I LOVED their love for one another.
It's blinding...star blinding to be exact.
Do you know Lem from Cold or Arik from Brute??
If you adore either, you will love Rig.
Rig is huge with both his presence and his heart.
He is all-loving, all-forgiving and all-healing.
He swiftly stole my heart.
This is a story about redemption, rebirth and renewal.
Just do me a favor and read it.
I have a very strong feeling you won't be disappointed.

4 Stars! A beautiful short!

For a story that started out with a brutal beginning, it ended on the best possible note! The author creates a unique world, something the likes of which I've never read before and I wish we could have spent more time there.

The people that make their home in The Downs, take the life that they have been given and make the best of their sometimes harsh environment. To outsiders that somehow survive (I'm not going to tell you what they survive) the inhabitants offer them healing, kindness, and do not judge them.

Rig is a healer and Enitan is a survivor and they both give the other what they so desperately need. Just lovely!

Wait a minute, I'm supposed to write a review for this?!

How on earth am I expected to articulate how beautiful this book was? How beautiful Rig was?

I didn't know what I was getting into with this. What I thought would be a dark and gritty, was actually gentle and lovely. Sure, there's grit and darkness, but there's also a tender, gentle giant who completely stole my heart.

The Downs is a place where the unredeemable are taken to be torn apart and tortured by demons. It's a death sentence. It's the terrifying tale older siblings tell when they're trying to keep their charges well behaved.

If you're lucky to survive the fall into the Downs, it's not a demon that will find you. It's a gentle man that will care for you and heal you with his song and gift. And you'll come to realise that the very place that's meant to be your end - dead and barren, can actually be the very place that saves you.

It's a place filled with more life than that of the city who casts those unredeemable people out. It's a place where you can find your heart, your value, and a home. It's the worth that others can see in you, even when you can't see it yourself.

More importantly, it's about the fight to survive and overcome.

In Enitan's case, the very betrayal that sent him there, is the very thing that freed him.

"We don't see the stars often in the Downs," he said quietly. "When they do shine, it's like a beautiful gift. Rare and unexpected. Everyone wanders outside to gape, and some people get so enamored they bump into houses and trees. We call them star-blind... That's me. You make me star-blind... You're smart and you're funny. I can work beside you all day and be sad when it's time to stop. You never complain, not even when you're in terrible pain. You're never greedy. You save your crumbs for the birds. And if you'd let go of your need for vengeance, a light would shine through you that would put all the stars to shame."

Incredible writing and an outstanding story. My thanks to the author for their participation in the Love is an Open Road event.

The Downs. It’s a steep abyss shrouded in clouds where monsters live.

It’s also a place where men get sentenced to die at the claws of the hideous creatures dwelling there. Throwing the poor souls into ‘The Downs’ is the ultimate punishment. If the fall doesn’t kill them, the monsters certainly will.

Everybody in the city knows and fears the place. But for Enitan it becomes a deadly reality when he is sentenced to be thrown into the Downs after the murder of his father. Enitan knows it’s a conspiracy against him, but he is powerless and endures terrible torture that culminates in him being thrown down the mysterious abyss.

But his story doesn’t end there. And while revenge is a strong motivation, it turns out love is even stronger. So when the chance comes to take revenge on the people who crossed him, Enitan must choose between the meaningless life of a rich man’s son and a love he discovered in the most unlikely place.

I loved this fairy tale type of romance. Rig is a totally endearing character. Enitan is quite a handful, though, I didn’t really fall in love with him, as he was driven by hate and revenge. The setting is very fascinating, I absolutely love this type of dystopian fantasy setting.

I loved this story. Loved Enitan and Rig. The setting, the challenges...all of it.

I have so many unanswered questions though! If this story were to be lengthened, or more set in this world I would be a super happy bunny unicorn!
All these questions, possibly more, and I still 5 starred it!

It’s wonderful how short a book manage to unfold a story with so much details. Grieving pasts, rescues, moving on, and so many morals. All sound so scary and intense, but ahhhh love it! Everything was soo vivid :):)

Such short time I’ve had with this book, but Enitan and Rig’s journey felt like a full length novel. It was so fast, since it’s short, but delivered so well <3

It even made me tear up 😭😭 thanks Hugo 😭😭

Such an open prompt could have lead in any direction - I didn't know what to expect but on sampling was caught and read it through.

I liked that the characters weren't perfect, Rig carries his scars on his skin while Enitan's are internal. Also Enitan is someone who enjoyed his life before this circumstance, which is a change from the often innocent innocent hero you often find.

It's a story of healing, finding purpose and of seeing people - really seeing them. Demons that are within. Second chances that matter, survival and love. How the greatest revenge might actually be to let someone win. I really liked the resolutions.

Rather than fast action this is a slow healing, realisation and rebuilding; with interesting likeable characters. There's emotion and sweetness in a world that's just a little different. Anger and grief giving way, over time, to love.

Another gem from the Love Is An Open Road event, where each year authors/members of the M/M Romance group share their talent freely to create an amazing array of stories.

The Downs is a story about revenge, about suffering, about redemption, about change, and about love. It's about seeing what's real, about realizations, and about finding that what you never knew you needed. It's about the power of love, about seeing beyond the outer shell of a man, about regrets and learning to move past them.

Superb writing, excellent flow to the storyline, and wonderful character growth, with a bit of magic and fantasy woven in; this is Kim Fielding at her best.

So well done, and absolutely worth your time.

Small trigger warning - there is mention of non-con, but it's over quickly, and not graphic at all.

Dark, dystopian, hurt/comfort, scarred/broken characters, and a sweet love story. There is action but for the most part it moves at a steady pace that lets us sink gently into the world and the relationship. A fable-like tale of betrayal, second chances, and vengeance.Overall a great story with a sweet and fitting end.

This was wholly original in concept and execution from such a broad, intriguing prompt.

Enitan is wrongly accused and convicted of a crime he didn't commit. In his world, punishment is in the form of being tossed down a ravine into the Downs, a terrifying place where demons torture their prey for fun.

What he finds instead is a world that is like and unlike his own - most notable - no demons. Slowly he is healed by Rig, a gentle soul who has deep regrets and sadness, just like Enitan suffers. Can they, will they find solace and salvation in the other?

This was refreshingly different, full of second chances and redemption. For my first Fielding story, this definitely makes me want to read more!

Loved it!!!

It had everything I love so much in Fielding's books:

- Characters with inner beauty and huge hearts, that are cast away by society or hiding from the outside world due to physical scars or for being different (Brute)

- World building that is so imaginative, vivid and well built, with focusing on details (the fog, the idea that trees are something so rare etc') that it sometimes reminds me of the first time I read Harry Potter. ( Treasure, another perfect example of Kim's world building)

- A world where two men in a sexual relationship is perfectly normal (Guarded- I enjoyed it so much!)

This is a beautiful story about finding your place in the world even if at the beginning it looks like the very oops it is about to happen.

And just simply, a very well written short poem!

"Who could understand the topography of want, the calculus of desire? All he knew was that skin to skin contact was like a balm to his bleeding soul."

The only thing that bothered me a bit was that I really wanted and needed more of Enitan and Rig communicating, talking, even thoughts about feelings towards Rig.

This story was AMAZING! I am becoming a huge fan of Kim Fielding's work. Each story is better than the last and since they're already terrific, it's hard to imagine anything better.

In this story, which takes place in an imaginary land, Enitan is rescued by Rig when he's thrown over the abyss of the world he grew up in. He's tossed into "the Downs," a world supposedly inhabited by demons, but in reality just inhabited by other humans, many of whom were considered criminals like Enitan. Rig is a healer, and he brings Enitan back from a near-death experience. He also teaches Enitan about life and love and the truth of happiness. Despite Rig's physical deformities and Enitan's emotional ones, the two find their way to a HEA relationship.

I love Kim Fielding's damaged heroes like the ones in Brute, and this one is just as powerful with endearing characters that I won't be forgetting any time soon.

This is an outstanding example of an author who gives her all to each story she writes, even those that are free. Thank you for writing this for our DRitC event, Kim Fielding. It's a fantastic gift for our members.

3.5 stars, rounded up because I am a K. Fielding fangirl

BUT, I didn't entirely enjoy this story. As a Fielding fan I have read about 90% of her books, and what we have here is "typical" Fielding. In fact, this book feels very much like a remix of Brute. The basic idea is the same, the details have been changed.

Call me crazy, but I want my favorite writers to challenge themselves and try different things. I understand the benefits of having a writing style and finding your niche. But at the same time I would think you would want to avoid the pitfall of sounding like you just keep writing about the same characters over and over.

This is a great story that has no weaknesses on its own. Unless you judge the writing as a whole and realize you have heard this story before.

This is my first Kim Fielding and I loved it. She built this new world with likeable characters and a story that will capture your entire attention. It was amazing and brilliant what she come up with the prompt that was given to her.

My only issue with it was the slowness of the story. It started incredible. But it ended a little flat, even though a loved the ending.

It was still amazing though. And for a free read, it's fantastic.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

"You make me star-blind"

Well. I was not expecting that. That prompt is so vague that this could have gone anywhere. Clever, sad, upsetting, sweet and beautiful. The cover has taken on a completely different meaning for me now. Before it was just 'oooh pretty' now it makes me kind of sad about what is to follow.

Oh and as has been mentioned in more than one review I'm all over the Rig love. Amazing!!

Belens Audio Book Review

Kim Fielding builds an amazing dystopian fantasy world full of deadly things, including the darkness that can eat at Enitan's soul if he lets it, and she does it in a quiet unhurried pace that offers redemption, hope, revenge, and love.

Slow and steady. That describes both the pace of the story and Rig, the man who heals Enitan after he's thrown to the Downs.

Wrongly judged for a crime he did not commit, Enitan is brutalized before being hurled into the Downs, a place where criminals and banished are thrown to die. When Enitan survives the fall, he is found by Rig, a gentle, but scarred, giant who helps heal Enitan's body.

I loved that Rig has his own scars, both physical and spiritual, but Enitan helps to heal him as well.
"We don’t see the stars often in the Downs. When they do shine, it’s like a beautiful gift. Rare and unexpected. Everyone wanders outside to gape, and some people get so enamored they bump into houses and trees. We call them star-blind...That’s me. You make me star-blind."

Beautifully narrated by K.C. Kelly, I was drawn into the story immediately and never lost focus for a single moment until the end. I loved his choice of character voices, his pacing, and almost soothing tone. This was just an absolute treat to listen to.
“I choose you,” he whispered in Rig’s ear. “I will always choose you.”
And of course they kissed.

Recommended.

He launched himself at Rig hard enough to send him sprawling onto his back. Then Enitan used a few of his wrestling moves to keep Rig captive beneath him. “I choose you,” he whispered in Rig’s ear. “I will always choose you.”

And of course they kissed.

I LOVE RIG!!!!

That was such a fantastic read. Not what I was expecting, which I guess wasn't much since the prompt was open-ended. What started off as a rather dark story, quickly became a sweet and beautiful romance. I loved all of it.

Poor Enitan consumed by venegence and beautiful broken Rig, he is the epitome of a gentle giant.

This story definitely had dark themes but was surprisingly light with it's humour and love. Nice hot sex scene and a beautiful HEA.

I LOVE RIG!!!

"I choose you and I’ll go wherever you lead me.”

Being in the Downs is not easy- trancebeetles in the shallows, dragonfish in the deep, killer clouds above. Falling there you think of it as punishment, but it’s not. It's a place where you could find your healer- the spirit of the huge, scarred man who saves those who fell. It’s rebirth. A chance to remake yourself into whoever you want. A place to call Home.

I really got in touch with and liked the story, but I dropped down a star because of some very tiny issues on the taste level .

This was completely lovely, a beautiful story of redemption and hope. When I originally saw this prompt I wanted it, and then when Kim Fielding ended up getting it I heaved a huge sigh of relief because I knew whatever she came up with would be amazing, and it is! Read this if you're looking for a touching, intimate fantasy story with a lot of love in it.
