Innis felt invisible in her everyday world of lonely work and home, but took solace in her powerful imagination. Still, the wonders of what she might fantasize about did not satiate her heart's desire for a passionate and deeply loyal love of her own. Her world takes a dramatic turn when she is forced to question her sanity as one of her fantasies, the enigmatic dark woman Vellum, seems to be coming to life. Innis becomes despondent when the fantasy fails to return and finally throws herself into the dangerous hands of the river during a catastrophic storm. She awakes to find her dream come to life.
