About the author

Intizar Husain (1925–2016) was a journalist, short-story writer, and novelist, widely considered one of the most significant fiction writers in Urdu. Born in Dibai, Bulandshahr, in British-administered India, he migrated to Pakistan in 1947 and lived in Lahore. Besides Basti, he was the author of two other novels, Naya Gar (The New House), which paints a picture of Pakistan during the ten-year dictatorship of the Islamic fundamentalist General Zia-ul-Haq, and Agay Sumandar Hai (Beyond Is the Sea), which juxtaposes the spiraling urban violence of contemporary Karachi with a vision of the lost Islamic realm of al-Andalus. Collections of Husain’s celebrated short stories have appeared in English under the titles Leaves, The Seventh Door, A Chronicle of the Peacocks, and An Unwritten Epic.

A good read indeed, this book was commissioned by the family of Hakim Ajmal Khan and is penned by renowned writer Mr. Intezar Hussain; this was an apt move by the Ajmal Khan's family to have chosen Intezar Hussain as a writer because he himself was part and parcel of that cultural milieu which is showcased in this piece of literature.

Most part of the book is dedicated to the life and works of the subject but there are strong under currents that emits the flavor of life style and culture of Muslim aristocracy of pre 47' Delhi.
for me the most interesting part is the topic that is featured in the latter chapter of this work which is the aftermath of the Khilafat movement. the failure of this political movement had quiet a far reaching consequences for not only Muslims but also the majority Hindu community too. there are quiet a few events mentioned that are of importance for those who are into the subject of Hindu-Muslim equation.

I do not know if there is a Hindi-or English version of it but people of India who are living in these turbulent times must read this biography it will be a an informative journey for them.

انتظار حسین صاحب کا جس نے بھی مطالعہ کیا ہو وہ یہ تو جانتا ہی ہے کہ انتظار حسین کو گنگا جمنی تہذیب کے خوبصورت مظاہر کے کھو جانے کا شدّت سے احساس تھا۔ اور وہ اپنی تحریروں کے ذریعہ اس کی بازیافت میں لگے رہتے تھے۔ یہ کتاب بھی اسی سلسلے کی ایک کڑی ہے۔ حکمت، طب یونانی، آیوروید کی ہمارے معاشرے میں کیا جگہ تھی اور یہ علم کیونکر ناپید ہوا اور اس علم کا اس تہذیب سے کیا رشتہ تھا یہی اس کتاب کا موضوع ہے۔ اور حکیم اجمل خاں صاحب سے تو آپ کو بھی یہ کتاب پڑھ کر محبت ہوجائے گی۔
بس ایک ذرا سا اعتراز مجھے یہ ہے کہ اسکا آخری باب میرے حساب سے اضافی ہے۔ اس میں انتظار حسین صاحب نے وہی باتیں دہرائی ہیں جو پچھلی پوری کتاب میں خٓاصی تفصیل سے بیان ہو چکی ہیں۔ اس آخری باب میں تلخیص کی بہت گنجائش ہے۔

یہ ایک بہترین بائیوگرافی ہے۔ حالانکہ نہ تو مجھے بائیوگرافی میں دلچسپی ہے نہ تاریخ قبل از پاکستان اور نہ اجمل اعظم کی شخصیت میں۔ لیکن انتظار حسین نے کمال کردیا ہے۔ پہلے اس زمانے کو بیان کیا پھر زمانے کی پیداوار یعنی اجمل اعظم کی شخصیت کو صیح تناظر میں بیان کیا۔ اور انکے کردار کو جو انہوں نے تاریخ میں ادا کیا
