Loosely familiar with some of Tara Booth's work, reading this little zine from her seems very in line with her typical subject matter of buttressing slice-of-life stories with an underlying sense of sorrow intermingled with the tedium of every day life. Unwell follows a young woman who goes about her day, starting from her awkwardly crawling out of day from a one night stand to going home and hanging out with her dog. She goes on a bike ride, showers, paints and has pizza, but throughout it feels like the woman is kind of just going through the motions. Towards the end of the day it seems like the woman comes to terms with accepting the mundane quality of life and appreciating it for what it is, but perhaps I'm inferring more from a comic that is entirely wordless.
Booth implements a painterly style that is loose and splotchy, but the pages are flush with vibrant colors. The designs are minimal here, but Booth uses the pared down style to great flourish and the final product provides some strong physical humor to supplement the narrative.
Another creator I've only heard of in passing, and I really want to read more of now ! As the title suggests, the main character isn't doing so great. Drinking the days away and struggling with their art. I'm not sure how much of it is autobiographical. But despite the grim subject matter, it's absolutely hilarious and charming. It says so much without a single written word
Tara Booth's How to be Alive was on of my favourite short comics from a few years ago so I was glad to find this super short comic as well. It's a humorous look into the average day of a young woman just struggling with daily life. Relatable to many people in their 20s trying to figure things out and get on track.
