“...and I am fighting my battle with ghosts, both within me and without.”
Ghosts is a play by Ibsen that touches on his signature themes of duty in opposition to happiness and joy, also, more specific the wife's duty towards her children and husband, and rules imposed on us by society and religion that shape all generations. Ibsen does not shy away from very controversial, taboo themes of philandering, incest, venereal diseases, euthanasia, and approaches them in a very empathetic and humane way, open-mindedly and revolutionary for those times. Critics and moralists hated him for that. The characters are influenced both by societal moral hypocrisy in view of family and sins, and heredity.
“It is not only what we have inherited from our father and mother that "walks" in us. It is all sorts of dead ideas, and lifeless old beliefs, and so forth. They have no vitality, but they cling to us all the same, and we cannot shake them off. Whenever I take up a newspaper, I seem to see ghosts gliding between the lines. There must be ghosts all the country over, as thick as the sands of the sea. And then we are, one and all, so pitifully afraid of the light.“
Mrs. Alving is a well-read, empathetic woman, struggling to find a balance between morals, duty and her own rebellion against a strict system in search of her own bliss. Father Manders is a representation of a person clinging to duty and ethical obligation, in the process losing the empathy and the perspective of life and the real world. Living more in the world of abstract ideas, he loses touch with what does it mean to be human and to live whole-heartedly in the fallen world of ghosts. Mrs. Alving, on the other hand, is a passionate, open-minded woman, and the voice which tries to open Manders eyes to the reality of the world.
“That doctrine will scarcely go down with warm-blooded young people who love each other.“
Father Manders, in his naivety, does not see the real nature of the situation, yet, wants to impose his own judgment about them on others. He is a symbol of the Church that has lost its connection with the hearts of real people, contrary to the deep wisdom it should have in helping souls to sail to the hopeful side of suffering. But grim, outdated, nonflexible ideas that are not in connection to the spirit of time only deepen the suffering. In father Manders's eyes; sacrifice of own ”joy of life” for duty is not only acceptable but desirable and noble.
It is the very mark of the spirit of rebellion to crave for happiness in this life. What right have we human beings to happiness? We have simply to do our duty, Mrs. Alving!
Mrs. Alving and Manders hold the opposite pole in the conflict of freedom vs. duty, expression ambiguity found in every person. Mrs. Alving even comes to the belief that her philandering, alcoholic husband was but a mere victim of a rigid system, in which the deep dissatisfaction and lack of joy were manifested through immoral behavior. Ibsen, thought Mrs. Alving, is adamant to tear apart the constricting doctrines of the victorian era, hoping to achieve a more liberated world without in which people are free to follow the desires of their heart.
MRS. ALVING. Yes—when you forced me under the yoke of what you called duty and obligation; when you lauded as right and proper what my whole soul rebelled against as something loathsome. It was then that I began to look into the seams of your doctrines. I wanted only to pick at a single knot; but when I had got that undone, the whole thing ravelled out. And then I understood that it was all machine-sewn.
Conventional morality is on trial and ultimately condemned. As Nietzsche said, God is dead, and the power of religious order is diminished, and people can chart their own paths. We are living in a new era of freedoms that were unimaginable for the times in which this play is set. The old victorian system of strict moral rules is torn apart and people in the western world have much more freedom to follow the desires of their hearts, even in an immoral way. The pitfall of the selfishness of living in that extreme is more explored in Ibsen's play Peer Gynt, immensely relevant for a modern man.
But, even without a set of imposed rules, we are not free from our heritage and diseases, another theme of the play explored in young Oswald, Mrs. Alving's son. Living with syphilis inherited from his father, he despises the life he is condemned to live and wishes euthanasia.
OSWALD. I never asked you for life. And what sort of a life have you given me? I will not have it! You shall take it back again!
Both Oswald and Regina are innocent but brought into this world to have a tragic destiny due to the sins of their father.

This play to the core of the theme of the play, described in the first quote. Everyone is predestined to combat with ghosts, both ones that are outside, in society rules that are always partially inclined to fight against the true expression of our authentic self, and in inner ghosts of our ancestors, parents who have their own faults and sins that shape our destiny of misfortune, sometimes written in our DNA. These ghosts do come alive in our thoughts, emotions and behavior and the specific way we ought to suffer. Ibsen wrote about the philosophy of Ghosts;
“They say, that the book preaches Nihilism. Not at all. It is not concerned to preach anything whatsoever. It merely points to the ferment of Nihilism going on under the surface, at home as elsewhere.”
Both psychological drama and social criticism, this work of Ibsen further prove how passionate and honest he was in search of understanding of all layers of human experience.

En cierta manera podemos considerar esta obra como la continuación de “Casa de muñecas”, una de las posibles, una en la que la mujer que dejó su hogar es reconvenida por la sociedad y la iglesia para que, rindiendo sumisión al qué dirán, regrese con su marido, por poco merecedor de ello que este sea. También será, como en aquella, el pasado que vuelve (los espectros), y que se nos va desvelando poco a poco, el eje sobre el que se construya toda la trama.
Estuve dudando si darle únicamente dos estrellas, le acababa de adjudicar tres a “Casa de muñecas” que me gustó algo más, los problemas de disponer solo de cinco. No es que estuviera en desacuerdo con la posibilidad escogida para continuar el relato de Nora, creo que es mucho más realista con la época que una esposa y madre quemando las naves. El motivo es algo que me ocurre con mucha frecuencia con los dramas de época, y que no es otra cosa que lo poco que me aportan, por manoseados y superados, muchos de los temas que abordan. No digo que la hipocresía no sea universal y atemporal, pero la idea de una bohemia disoluta o la influencia del confesor en la vida de las familias, o, al menos, en la vida que mira al exterior, creo que ya dejaron, con mucho, de tener la actualidad que tuvieron en su momento. Pero también había otros que me compensaron este bajón, el tema de la herencia, el propio papel de la mujer que sin medios ni fuerzas es incapaz de rebelarse a los desmanes del marido, o el de la eutanasia. Y también, cómo no, el final, mucho más de mi agrado que el chocante desenlace de “Casa de muñecas”.

Book Review
3 out of 5 stars to Ghosts, a play written in 1881 by Henrik Ibsen. After I read Henrik Ibsens’s realistic play Ghosts, I immediately formed opinions of the characters. I liked Mrs. Alving and Regina. I thought that Oswald was a brat and a nuisance. I didn’t understand how Mrs. Alving could love him, even though he was her flesh and blood. He seemed to be nothing but a spoiled child despite being in his twenties. Mrs. Alving exemplified a woman who was angry with her late husband for the misdeeds he committed. She was a figurehead for the family, and thus a powerful character. Pastor Manders was definitely an exhausting character as was Engstrand. I couldn’t get a strong grip on either of them because I didn’t know who set the nursery on fire. In my mind, whichever one of them set it aflame was the evil character, and the other was the good character. It is not all that black and white though, which I didn’t find out until I watched the film version.
After seeing the film version of the play Ghosts, I fell in love with the actress who portrayed Mrs. Alving. She definitely improved upon the character of Mrs. Alving that I understood when I read the play. She showed me how much of a woman she was when she flirted with Pastor Manders in the very beginning. She was played much more feminine in the film version than she was in the written script, at least in my opinion. I believe that seeing her act out the pain, show her emotions and enter into deep thought showed how human and real the character was. I did not feel this way while I was reading the script. I liked her character then, but that was only because she was losing someone that she loved. I always pity the underdog, which is what I think she is even more so in the film version. She had to fight Pastor Manders, remain strong for Oswald, deal with Engstrand, and find the ability to support Regina. She was losing in every situation of her life, and by seeing her in the play, I was able to not only understand her pain even more, but root for her. I liked her in the script version, but it was not until the video version that I could truly realize what she had to go through.
The character of Engstrand was a puzzle to me. While reading the script, I didn’t like Engstrand, but I didn’t dislike him either. He just didn’t appeal to me at all. I didn’t have a picture of him in my mind either, which is odd. Normally, I can see a movie of the story in my mind as I read the script, but in this case, his appearance was vague and blurry. I had no face to match the character. Consequently, when I saw the film version, I was destined to interpret Engstrand exactly as the director of the play did. As a result, he did and he didn’t improve upon the impression that I had of him; however, I also don’t know if I liked what I saw. Engstrand appeared too rough looking, and all of the facial hair diminished the charm of the character. I thought that he was a little bit more clean-cut, but the film shows the darker side of Engstrand. I was convinced though, that it was not Engstrand who set the nursery aflame though. I felt that it was Pastor Manders, at least in the film version.
Pastor Manders was another character who produced a myriad of opinions in my mind. When I read the script, he seemed to be full of passion and life. I thought that he would end up in bed with Mrs. Alving. However, in the film, he is asexual, except for the brief interlude with Mrs. Alving at the opening of the film. He came across as a priest, and only a priest, which is why he did not appeal to me. He didn’t have any “love of life” in him as Regina, Oswald, and the Captain all did. Overall, I think that the film version improved my opinions of most characters, but I ended up disliking certain characters that I hadn’t before.
The film version definitely exemplifies realism more than naturalism for several reasons. One of the main reasons that makes the film version realistic instead of naturalistic is that the film version did not actually show the barn ablaze. In naturalistic pieces, directors would actually show the smoke and the burning from the barn. Also, they would have the camera focus on Oswald, who would be standing there ready to fight it. I understand that it would be hard to do in a theatre though. I am unsure about the staging of the film. Was it staged without an audience simply so that someone could just video record it? Or, was the play staged for an audience with someone in the background videotaping it. I think that it was meant only to be videotaped, in which case, it could have been done outdoors to show the barn burning. Therefore, since the burning barn was not actually shown, the film is more realistic than naturalistic.

I'm inclined to think that we are all ghosts, every one of us. It's not just what we inherit from our mothers and fathers that haunts us. It's all kinds of old defunct theories, all sorts of old defunct beliefs...It's not that they actually live on in us; they are simply lodged there, and we cannot get rid of them.
Like Ibsen's most famous play A Doll's House, Ghosts is yet another brilliant exploration of the negative impact the moral and social conventions can have on individual lives. Through the play, Ibsen emphasizes the importance of bringing socially taboo topics into the open, demonstrating the negative consequences that their suppression could have on the individuals.
Henrik Ibsen is considered an important figure in the European realist movement. As a realist, he exposed social issues of which society kept mute. By focusing on the inane social conventions and the hypocritical stance of the institutions and individuals who clung to them, he forced his audience to see an ugly truth. He showed how the past "ghosts" destroy the present and stagnate the forward progress of society.
Thematically, the play exposes how maintaining reputation, duty, and self-sacrifice at the expense of truth destroys the families. By helping to maintain a false reputation of her late husband, Captain Alving, an alcoholic philanderer, Mrs. Alving faces distressing consequences of her own foolish self-sacrifice, making her question a woman's duty in marriage. The suppression of truth cost her, her son. When she comes to realize the social lie she'd lived in, she also questions the soundness of social judgment and the advice of her Pastor, seeing the latter's hypocritical moral stance.
Ghosts proved to be one of Ibsen's most powerful and most controversial works. Its initial reception was poor. People felt scandalized and offended. Only a few copies of the book form were sold and theatre companies shied from producing the play. With time, it earned popularity and alongside his other realistic plays, made a deep social impact.

Κλασικό θεατρικό έργο, με θέμα τους βρικόλακες της ζωής μας, όλα αυτά δηλαδή που μας εμποδίζουν να απολαύσουμε τη ζωή μας ή οι τύψεις που νιώθουμε για όσα απολαύσαμε. Βαθιά κριτική στην κοινωνία της εποχής του, με σκοπό να προβληματίσει το θεατή.
Δε βρικολακιάζει μέσα μας μόνο ό,τι έχουμε κληρονομήσει από τους γονείς μας, αλλά κι ένα σωρό παλιές νεκρές ιδέες, ένα σωρό παλιές νεκρές θεωρίες και πολλά άλλα τέτοια ακόμα. Ουσιαστικά, δεν ζούνε μέσα μας κι όμως τα έχουμε μέσα στο αίμα μας και δεν μπορούμε να τα πετάξουμε από πάνω μας...
Η έκδοση από το Ύψιλον περιλαμβάνει μόνο το κείμενο και τη διανομή των ρόλων για την παράσταση που ανέβηκε, χωρίς καμία ανάλυση του έργου ή έστω ένα μικρό βιογραφικό του συγγραφέα. Θα μπορούσε να είναι καλύτερη... Το κείμενο πάντως είναι μια χαρά

فقط میتونم بگم چقدر خوشحالم که مرد نشدم که خواه یا ناخواه در طول زندگیم دچار بدبختی و بدحالی و ناراحتیِ حتی یکروز یا یک عمرِ یک زن بشم.(لطفا حرفمو اشتباه برداشت نکنید، قطعا زن هم میتونه باعث بدبختی مرد بشه ولی منظوراینکه واقعا کنترل کردنش راحتتر از مرد بودنه، از همون لحاظهایی که توی این کتاب متوجهش میشید.)
این نمایشنامهی فوقالعاده رو همیشه با اجرای فوقالعادهتری که دیشب ازش دیدم یادم میمونه. نصفشو خوندم رفتم تئاتر و اون نصفهی آخرش رو که بعدش خوندم صحنه به صحنهی نمایش تو ذهنم تکرار میشد و واقعا تجربهی ذهنی خفنی بود برام. انگار ذهنم ضبط کرده بود نمایش رو و با خوندن خطها پلی میکرد برام صدا و حرکاتشونو.

HA! Not having read the play's synopsis beforehand, did I ever get a ghastly (not ghostly) surprise!
"The sins of the father are visited upon the children."
Throughout IBSEN'S entire play, written in 1881, imagine an atmosphere that is nothing but rain and gloom, and subject matters ominously dark and grim all the way to a hopeless and shocking conclusion. That is what you will unearth in GHOSTS.
What a scandalous work of fiction for the time and unexpected read for me!

I saw a production of Ghosts only once, at the Stratford Festival Theater in 1976 (I still have the program!) {hoarder!], featuring the amazing Nicholas Pennell as Oswald, and I still recall the last, dazzling and horrific image of him on stage there.
The play, 1881, by Norwegian Henrik Ibsen, had its first production in 1882 in Chicago! It is an intense family drama, with a searing analysis of the limitations of social conventions on the human spirit--order, duty, religion, and the play also depicts venereal disease, incest, and madness. It's what's below the orderly surface in this family, and it is what they do not do about all the dissolution underneath that creates all the problems. In other words, pretending things were fine on the surface caused all the decay underneath (wait: is this a review about flossing?!).
I'm reading ghost stories of various kinds as fast as I can for a fall 23 class on ghosts of all stripes (and solids), though this one is not about supernatural ghosts. The central characters include Helen Alving, a widow; her son Oswald, a painter; Rev. Manders, who has been a spiritual and financial advisor to the Alving family; Jacob Engstrand, a carpenter, and his daughter Regina who works as a maid for the Alving family (though she is actually the illegitimate daughter, a secret, of the deceased Captain Alving, a pillar of the community in public reputation, but a scoundrel in private reality).
The surface is calm and happy as Oswald comes home to be with his mother, but underneath we see that the ghosts of Captain Alving's dissolute life has been visited on the Alving family, as Oswald and Regina would like to be married.. . . but oops, there's that blood cousin thing, and then Oswald we see is dying of syphilis, too (the ghost of his father's profligacy visited on the son; it's in the blood, as they say).
Sound like fun? Pair it with Ibsen's Hedda Gabler, a pro-woman play for sure, two of the greatest plays ever, with intensity throughout, and an electrifying conclusion.

دوستانِ گرانقدر، نمایشنامهٔ "اشباح" به موضوعاتی همچون: بیماری هایِ جنسی و وراثتی- کشتنِ بیمارانی که به مرگ راضی هستند- دین و مذهب و سنتهایِ نابخردانه- زندگی زناشوئی- دروغ - حقوقِ زنان- ترس و سواستفاده های جنسی، پرداخته است
ایبسن، به قدری به سنتها و دین و مذهبِ متحجر در این اثر تاخته است که یک سری بیخردِ مذهبی، پس از نوشتنِ این نمایشنامه او را "دشمنِ مردم" خوانده و سالها جلویِ نشر و اجرایِ این نمایشنامه را گرفتند.. در صورتیکه خودِ این موجوداتِ بیخرد در اصل دشمنِ مردم بوده و میباشند

بیوه زنی به نامِ <هلن> همسرِ کاپیتانی به نامِ <آلوینگ> بوده است... مردم، آلوینگ را خیلی قبول دارند، ولی هلن بسیاری از حقایقِ تلخ در موردِ شوهرِ بی بند و بارش را مخفی نگه داشته است.. شهوت رانی و الکلی بودن و بسیاری دیگر از کثافت کاری هایِ آلوینگ را سالها دیده و دَم نزده است... آلوینگ دو فرزند داشته است.. پسری به نامِ <اوزوالد> که مادرش هلن میباشد و دختری به نامِ <رگینه> که حاصلِ سکسِ آلوینگ با کلفتِ خانه بوده است... البته رگینه تصور میکند که پدرش <انگستراندِ نجار> میباشد... حال رگینه، کنیزِ خانهٔ هلن است... از سویِ دیگر، هلن پسرش اوزوالد را از همان دورانِ کودکی به خارج از کشور فرستاده تا به دور از فسادی که در خانه وجود دارد، درس خوانده و بزرگ شود
هلن در دورانِ جوانی، دلباختهٔ کشیشی به نامِ <ماندرز> بوده است و زمانی که از کثافت کاری هایِ شوهرش خسته میشود، به کشیش ماندرز پناه میبرد، ولی این کشیشِ نادان و مذهبی، برایِ حفظِ آبرویِ دینیِ خویش، به هلن پشت کرده و این زنِ بیچاره مجبور میشود به خانه بازگردد که برایِ او همچون اسارت در زندان و شکنجه کشیدن است
پس از مرگِ آلوینگ، پول زیادی برایِ هلن به ارث میماند و هلن برایِ سرپوش گذاشتن بر فسادِ شوهرش، تصمیم میگیرد تا تمامِ آن پول را برایِ ساختِ پرورشگاهی برایِ کودکان هزینه کند و ذره ای از آن پولِ کثیف را واردِ زندگیِ ج��یدش نکند... کارِ ساختِ پرورشگاه را انگستراندِ نجار بر عهده میگیرد، ولی کشیش ماندرز، این موجودِ پست و بی ریشه، همچون دیگر دینفروشانِ کثیف، خود را مشاورِ هلن به شمار آورده و مدام در کارِ ساختِ پرورشگاه دخالت کرده تا مردمِ ناآگاه تصور کنند که او نیز در این کار نقشی بزرگ دارد که البته با حضورش خسارتی سنگین به این پروژه وارد میکند و حتی اصرار میکند تا ساختمان بیمه نشود و گویا او نیز همچون برخی از خرافی هایِ بیخرد در ایران، به بیمهٔ ابوالفضل و مهدی و عیسی مسیح، باوری احمقانه و سودجویانه دارد
خلاصه قرار میشود در جشنِ افتتاحیه، ازوالد که در پاریس زندگی میکند و نقاش است نیز حضور داشته و به خانه بازگردد... هلن نیز امیدوار است، با بازگشتِ پسرش ازوالد به خانه، زندگیِ آرام و آبرومندی را آغاز نماید..... ولی شبِ پیش از افتتاحِ پرورشگاه، همه چیز در آتش میسوزد و پرورشگاه نابود میشود..... کشیش ماندرزِ پست نهاد و کثیف، برایِ آنکه وجهٔ مذهبی اش را نزدِ مردمِ ناآگاه از دست ندهد، با انگستراندِ نجار، معامله ای ناجوانمردانه و پست میکند... او به نجار میگوید: اگر مسئولیتِ آتش سوزی را بر عهده بگیری، هزینه ای را که برایِ ادارهٔ پرورشگاه، هلن به من داده است را به تو میدهم تا با آن شرابخانه و یا به اصطلاح عشرتکدهٔ ملوانان را به نامِ خویش، بسازی
در سویِ دیگرِ داستان، اوزوالد به مادرِ بیچاره اش هلن خبر میدهد که در پاریس به بیماریِ سفلیس دچار شده است و البته امیدوار است که اگر بیماری آنقدر پیشرفت کرد که او را زمینگیر نمود، رگینه با تزریقِ مقدارِ زیادی مرفین، او را به آرامی و بدونِ درد، به قتل رسانده تا از این درد رهایی یابد.... ولی رگینه زمانی که متوجه میشود پدرش آلوینگ بوده و در اصل اوزوالد برادرِ ناتنیِ او میباشد، از اینکار سرباز زده و خانه را برایِ همیشه ترک میکند
هلن این مادرِ دردکشیده و رنجور، به فرزندش اوزوالد توضیح میدهد که پدرش نیز به بیماری سفلیس مبتلا بوده و حال این مادر دلسوخته باید تصمیم بگیرد که میتواند با تزریقِ مرفین، مرگِ آسانی را به فرزندش بدهد یا باید دیوانگی و درد کشیدنِ فرزندش را به تماشا بنشیند........... عزیزانم، بهتر است خودتان این نمایشنامه را خوانده و از سرانجامِ آن آگاه شوید

هلن نمیداند چگونه میتواند از دین و داوری هایِ یک عده بیخرد، بگریزد!! و در تردید است که چگونه آنچه را که درست است را برایِ زندگیِ خویش و عزیزانش انتخاب کند و همین تردید در انتخاب و مشاوره هایِ ابلهانه ای که کشیش به وی میدهد و او را از همه چیز و همه کس میترساند، همه چیزِ هلن را نابود میکند

Not his best, but still Ibsen. Thought there were a few loose ends in Act III.

نمایشنامه خیلی خوبی بود.
با این که تا پیش از این تصور میکردم ایبسن خستهکنندهس، اینبار متوجه شدم که اصلا اینطور نیست. دیالوگها خیلی خوب نوشته شدن و اصلا هرز نیستن و دونه دونه هی اطلاعات درباره شخصیتها میدن و ماجرا رو جلو میبرن. البته این نمایشنامه خیلی دراماتیک نیست و طی نمایش بیشتر پیشداستانها افشا میشن و البته اونا به قدر کافی جذاب هستن.
اما چیزی که درخشانش کرده موضوعهاییه که بهش میپردازه.
مذهب و کلیشههای رایج مذهبی و مسائلی مثل آبرو و حرف مردم،
آزادی زن،
ازدواج سفید،
بیماری مقاربتی،
مرگ خودخواسته،
و این نمایشنامه از همهی اینها حرف میزنه، اون هم در سال ۱۸۸۱!
تم اصلیش البته کلیشههای جامعه است و شخصیت زن نمایش، کسیه که به علت این که پشت سرش حرف در نیارن با شوهر فاسدش زندگی مشترکش رو ادامه میده و برعکس سعی میکنه با لاپوشونی، آبروی شوهر رو حفظ کنه. حالا شوهر مرده و تصمیم داره یه پرورشگاه بسازه و به نام شوهرش کنه تا نام نیک این آدم فاسد رو در تاریخ جاودانه کنه. البته در انتها این پرورشگاه میسوزه و این نماد از بین میره.
حالا از زندگی زن گذشته و یه جورایی حسرت میخوره که چرا اونطور که دلش میخواسته زندگی نکرده.
زن کار دیگهای هم میکنه. پسرشون رو از ۷ سالگی به خارج میفرسته تا پیش پدر فاسد بزرگ نشه و درواقع با این مرز کشی جغرافیا میخواد جلوی مسئله وراژت بایسته. اما بیماری مقاربتیای از پدر به پسر منتقل شده که پسر رو نابود میکنه.
اشباح، اینجاست که معنا پیدا میکنه. استعارهی ایبسن از گذشتگان ما که تاثیر رفتارشون به شکل رسومات یا به شکل وراثت به ما منتقل میشه و ایستادن جلوش کار سادهای نیست.
کشیشی توی نمایش هست که بحثهایی با مادر و پسر می کنه طی نمایشنامه که درباره مسائلی است که بالاتر ذکر کردم. و از این لحاظ خیلی جالبه و در کل نمایش سعی داره بگه عقاید تثبیت شده در جامعه قابل بازنگری هستن.
بعد از نوشتن این نمایشنامه خیلی ایبسن رو می کوبن و تقبیح میکنن و حتا یکی میگه این نمایش مثل عمل قبیحی در ملا عام است. اونم نمایش بعدیش رو مینویسه: دشمن مردم. و از خودش دفاع می کنه.
پینوشت: نمایشنامه قبلی ایبسن یعنی خانه عروسک، درباره زنیه که شوهرش رو ترک میکنه و تحمل نمیکنه خودخواهیهاش رو. اینجا برعکس زنی رو میبینیم که میمونه با شوهرش و نتیجه خوبی حاصل نمیشه.

Ein “lebenslustiger” Mann verfällt in der Provinz der Trunksucht und dem Lotterleben, steckt (seine Frau und) den Sohn mit Syphilis an (der Väter Sünden werden heimgesucht an den Kindern und wird nach seinem Tode immer noch als Ehrenbürger angesehen, weil seine Frau aus Rücksicht auf ihre Pflichten und den Sohn die Wahrheit verschweigt. Ein ebenfalls trunksüchtiger Tischler will seine Stieftochter in seinem “Seemannsheim” prostituieren und wird darin noch vom Pastor unterstützt, dem er eine Brandstiftung in die Schuhe geschoben hat. Der Sohn akzeptiert die wilde Ehe seine Künstlerfreunde und prangert die Zügellosigkeit der feinen Herren auf Reisen an. Und eine Mutter steht am Ende vor der Frage, ob sie ihrem unheilbar kranken Sohn Sterbehilfe leisten soll. Manches von dem muss sich der Zuschauer/Leser erschließen. Am Ende bleibt er oder sie erschüttert sitzen und muss einsehen, dass der Dichter recht hat mit der Aussage, die er der Mutter in den Mund legt: … wir sind alle Gespenster. Nicht nur das, was wir von Vater und Mutter geerbt haben, geht in uns um. Es sind alle erdenklichen alten, toten Ansichten und allerhand alter toter Glaube und so weiter. Es lebt nicht in uns; aber es sitzt uns trotzdem im Blut, und wir können es nicht loswerden.
Kein Wunder, dass die feine dänisch-norwegische Gesellschaft das Stück seinerzeit unerträglich fand. Für uns bleibt es aktuell.

ارثیه شوم:
نثر ایبسن همان است که در آثار مهمتر او میبینیم، شاهکار. دیالوگهای قوی و پرکشش، منتها داستانش زود انزال است و سریع لو میرود. «راز»، اصلیترین مفهومی که بسیاری از نمایشنامه نویسان بزرگ، از سوفوکل و اوریپید تا میلر و ممت، داستانشان را بر آن بنا میکنند، در آثار ایبسن هم نقش پررنگی دارد و باید در زمان مناسب برملا شود، ولی ایبسن در جن زدگانش کمی عجول بود.
هرچند، برای خوانندگان امروز، بحثهای کلیسایی درباره گناه و ... ممکن است خستهکننده باشد ولی به یمن وجود افرادی همچون ایبسن و اندیشهشان، شاهد چنین رشد فکریای در جوامع اسکاندیناوی بودیم. نعمتی که شاید ما از آن محروم بودیم.
پلات دوم این نمایشنامه، ارثی است که از پدر به پسر میرسد که در تاریخ ادبیات کلاسیک، این ارثیهها مساوی با مصیبتاند.
ترکیب این دو پلات، نمایشنامهای پرشور و پرکشش و قابل تامل را میسازد و میتوان خواند و روی صحنه دید و لذت برد ولی با توجه به
این که این کار را ایبسن نوشته، میتوان و باید انتظار بیشتری داشت.

Ritratto di famiglia in un interno e la famiglia è tutt’altro che il nucleo caldo e accogliente che dovrebbe essere. È luogo di infelicità e costrizione, in cui si consuma il dolore di una vita trascorsa a salvare le apparenze e quello di un terribile male che affligge il giovane Osvald, innocente punito per le colpe del padre.
È un dramma cupo, impietoso, gelido come la neve che opprime il paesaggio. Non c’è riscatto, non c’è luce. In un crescendo implacabile si arriva alla tragica conclusione, mentre il sole splende, beffardo e irraggiungibile.
“ io credo quasi, che noi tutti siamo spettri, pastore Manders. Non è solo ciò che abbiamo ereditato da padre e madre, che ritorna in noi. È ogni specie di vecchie morte opinioni e ogni genere di vecchie morte credenze e cose simili. Esse non vivono in noi; ma intanto sussistono e non riusciamo a sbarazzarcene. [...]
Devono esistere spettri per tutto il paese. Devono essere fitti come la rena, mi sembra. E per questo abbiamo tutti così pietosamente paura della luce”.

نمره واقعی به نظرم 2 و نیمه. هر چند نظر بقیه اینه که جنبه انتقادی این نمایشنامه عالیه و دیالوگ ها هم خیلی خوب نوشته شده اما، من نظر متفاوتی دارم. به نظرم وقتی جنس انتقاد های یک اثر تماما زمانمنده، ارزش خواندن اون اثر در زمان حال، بسیار کم میشه؛ در عین اینکه در زمان خودش شاید واقعا از خواندنی ترینا و مهم ترینا بوده. من خودم به شخصه دوست دارم دغدغه های مد نظر نویسنده به صورت یکم بنیادی تر و در قالب موضوعات غیر زمانمند بیان میشدن. به عنوان مثال داستان مذهب و... مشکلات کلیساها و... اون دوران رو صدها نفر نوشتن و دیگه واقعا موضوعی منسوخ شده است؛ هرچند مهم. این موضوع باعث نمیشه که این اثر بد یا ضعیف قلمداد بشه اما، مخصوصت در رابطه با بعد اجتماعی و انتقادی اش، یه چیز خیلی میانگین و معمولی میشه. ایبسنی که من دوست دارم تو نمایشنامه های متاخرش ظهور میکنه.

Più che un dramma, Spettri è una vera e propria tragedia familiare che si consuma in una casa di campagna tra i fiordi norvegesi con personaggi condannati ad un’eterna infelicità.
Sapevo che in patria quest’opera aveva suscitato un vespaio di polemiche (con accuse di disfattismo) e che ne era stata vietata la rappresentazione, perciò mi aspettavo una forte ed esplicita critica sociale, che pur c’è, ma, più che esplicitata, è insinuata in un’atmosfera densa di presagi.
Ibsen ha la capacità incredibile di attirare il lettore al centro della storia e di rendere il “suo” mondo qualcosa di reale; se si considera che siamo di fronte a un drammaturgo della seconda metà dell’800, la modernità dei suoi testi è stupefacente.

چکیده:
پسری به خانه برمیگردد، با یک راز. او بیمار است. پدرش مرده است و مادر قصد دارد بزرگداشتی برای شوهر خود برگزار کند و در آن، پرورشگاهی افتتاح کند. کشیش، دوست سالهای دور پدر به خانه میآید و در حال پیریزی مراسم است. مستخدمهی خانه و پسر (ارباب) که نقاشی روبهرشد بوده، درگیر ماجرای عشقی میشوند. مادر طی سالها عقاید آنارشیستی و ضد راست پیدا کرده است. حقیقت زندگی پدر و سپس حقیقت بیماری پسر بر ملا میشود. برملا میشود که چرا زن اصرار به ساخت پرورشگاه داشته. پرورشگاه با سهلانگاری آتش میگیرد و میسوزد. مادر و پسر تنها میمانند. پسر حقیقت زندگی پدرش را میفهمد. از مادر خود میخواهد که به او دوازده حب مورفین را یکجا تزریق کند.
..
اول از کیفیت ترجمه بگم که بسیار بسیار بالا بود. از مقالهی پر و پیمون اول کتاب میشد این رو حدس زد.
چاپ، طراحی، کیفیت کاغذ و همه چیز کتاب واقعا راضیکننده ست. نشر بیدگل واقعا حرفهای درآورده این نمایشنامه رو.
مترجم توضیحات زبانشناسیکی داده از اینکه چرا بهتره اسم کتاب به جنزدگان ترجمه بشه، که بیمصداق قانعکنندهست.
ولی تقریبا نود درصد بارهای مختلفی که توی متن به گوست اشاره میشه، بسیار بهتره از واژهی شبح یا اشباح استفاده بشه و جن، خصوصا با سابقهی اسلامی و بومیش اصلا به متن نمیخوره.
متن برای هر کاراکتر یک لحن درست و کاملا مجزا داره، و باید به مترجم دست مریزاد گفت.
این بار دومیه که من اشباح یا جنزدگان رو میخونم و هر دو بار به هیچ وجه لزوم و کارکرد «بیمه نشدن» پرورشگاه رو درک نکردم. سه صفحه دیالوگ زورچپون، برای توجیه انجام ندادن کاری (بیمه کردن پرورشگاه) که اگر انجام نشده رها میشد حتی یک نفر به فکرش خطور نمیکرد که چرا این خونهای که سوخت و خاکستر شد بیمه نشده بود!
در جمیع جهات متن متن قدرتمندیه، اما کیفیت اصلی خودش رو در ضربه کردن اخلاقیات و کلیشههای اجتماعی، به تمامی، نشون میده.
پدرها فاسد، کشیشها فاسد، زنها آنارشیست و جوانها رو به مرگ. همهچیز آنتیتز باور رایجه و کاملا طبیعی جلوه میکنه.
ایبسن به جای چند کاراکتر، چند گفتمان اجتماعی رو به روی صحنه فرا میخونه و آشکار و پنهان کار رو به تراژدی میکشونه.
ویژگی اصلی تمامی نمایشهای ایبسن اینه که بحثهای بعد از دیدنش، از گیرایی خود اثر بسیار پررنگتره.
حرف دیگهای نیست. کتاب با اررزشیه. بخونیدش.

Παρά κι ένα σωρό παλιές νεκρές θεωρίες, ένα σωρό παλιές νεκρές ιδέες, κι άλλα πολλά ακόμα. Δε ζούνε μέσα μας, κι όμως τα 'χουμε στο αίμα μας, και δεν μπορούμε να τα πετάξουμε από πάνω μας. [...] είναι γεμάτος ο τόπος βρικόλακες. Αμέτρητοι θα είναι, θαρρώ, σαν την άμμο της θαλάσσης. Κι από την άλλη μεριά, όλοι μας, μικροί μεγάλοι, έχουμε τέτοιον ελεεινό φόβο για το φως!"
Το δράμα φαίνεται να ξεκινάει, ή μάλλον να κορυφώνεται με τα παραπάνω λόγια της κυρίας Άλβιγκ, η αποδιοπομπαία ηρωίδα του θεατρικού έργου που βγάζει στο φως την καταπίεση και τα απωθημένα μέρη του κοινωνικού της προσωπείου. Ο Ίψεν, πιστός στο σκανδιναβικό πνεύμα του νατουραλισμού, της ατμοσφαιρικότητας και της συγκρατημένης δραματικότητας, παρουσιάζει το έγκλημα και την καταδίκη που βιώνει ο άνθρωπος λόγω των αστικών ηθών, λόγω της υποκρισίας των θρησκευτικών κανόνων, και απορρίπτει τα ίδια τα θεμέλια της κοινωνίας.
Το θέμα της γυναίκας και η θέση της στην κοινωνία και την οικογένεια, από τα πιο χαρακτηριστικά στο αστικό δράμα, απασχολεί ιδιαίτερα τη δραματουργία του Ίψεν στο σύνολό της· η κυρία Άλβιγκ είναι νομοτελειακά η ηρωίδα-θύμα των νόμων-εθιμικών κωδίκων, των "βρικολάκων".
Το ίδιο παγιδευμένος σε κοινωνικές νομοτέλειες-"βρικόλακες"είναι και ο Όσβαλντ, ο γιος της κυρίας Άλβιγκ. Καθαρά ιψενικός χαρακτήρας, αδύναμος υποτάσσεται στους μηχανισμούς της πατριαρχικής κοινωνίας, χωρίς προσπάθεια υπέρβασής τους, αποδέχεται τη μοίρα του, την προδιαγεγραμμένη από τις επιταγές του πατρικού δαχτύλου.
Το δράμα φαίνεται να ξεκινάει, ή μάλλον να κορυφώνεται με τα παραπάνω λόγια της κυρίας Άλβιγκ, η αποδιοπομπαία ηρωίδα του θεατρικού έργου που βγάζει στο φως την καταπίεση και τα απωθημένα μέρη του κοινωνικού της προσωπείου. Ο Ίψεν, πιστός στο σκανδιναβικό πνεύμα του νατουραλισμού, της ατμοσφαιρικότητας και της συγκρατημένης δραματικότητας, παρουσιάζει το έγκλημα και την καταδίκη που βιώνει ο άνθρωπος λόγω των αστικών ηθών, λόγω της υποκρισίας των θρησκευτικών κανόνων, και απορρίπτει τα ίδια τα θεμέλια της κοινωνίας.

ترجمه اصغر رستگار بهتر از قادری بود، قادری انقدر شلخته و شکسته ترجمه کرده که گم میشدم بین دیالوگها.
جنزدگان یا اشباح، میگه گذشته همیشه مثل یه سایه دنبالت میاد. گذشتهای که دیگران اشتباه کردن و عذابش برای تو میمونه.
خوندن جنزدگان بعد از عروسکخانه هم جالب بود. اونجا نورایی بود که بالاخره تونست خودشو از شرایط بد نجات بده و ترکش کنه، اینجا هلنهای که موند و تحمل کرد. هر دوشون زنهایی بودن که "انتخاب" کردن که چطور با زندگی کنار بیان. هلنه بزدل بود که شوهر عیاش بدردنخورشو تحمل کرد؟ شاید. اما تاثیر جامعهی اطراف و ترس از آبرو و نقشی که کشیش ماندرش (بیمغز) تو افکار و باورهای سابق هلنه داشتن اون رو به این تصمیم واداشتن.
نصف کتاب داشتم علامت و نشونههایی که اوزوالد از بیماریش میداد رو کنار هم میچیدم برای درک بیماریش. چرا یه بار مثل آدم نمیگی چه دردی داری خب! شبیه پازل بهمریخته تعریفش میکرد.

Φαντάσματα του καθήκοντος, της ενοχής, των βιαστικά θαμμένων προσδοκιών, των υπολογισμών και της υποκρισίας...
Η κυρία Άλβινγκ είναι ο κεντρικός χαρακτήρας του έργου. Η ζωή της καθηλώνεται από αόρατα δ��σμά όπως της Έντα Γκαμπλερ, μόνο που σ’ αυτήν πρόκειται πρώτιστα για φαντάσματα απ' παρελθόν, ενώ στην Έντα από το παρόν - και το μέλλον της. Σε αντίθεση με την Έντα, στην Έλεν Άλβινγκ έχει μείνει κάτι για να κρατηθεί· ο γιος της Όσβαλντ.
Ίσως για χάρη του να επιτίθεται με πάθος σε ό,τι εκπροσωπεί ο πάστορας, σε μιαν αξέχαστη σκηνή. Για να προφυλάξει τον Όσβαλντ από την προπατορική μέγγενη.. Όμως είναι ήδη αργά· το πατρικό κληροδότημα έχει σαν βάκιλος μολύνει ανεπανόρθωτα την ύπαρξη και των δυο τους.
Η Έλενα Άλβινγκ, αγαπημένη μου Ιψενική ηρωίδα, έφτασε κοντά στη ρήξη αλλά υποτάχθηκε τελικά, τόσο απ' την κοινωνία των ανδρών, όσο κι απ τη Μοίρα. Τουλάχιστον είδε, πολύ καθαρότερα από τη Νόρα τον μηχανισμό πέρα από τα πρόσωπα:
Κα Αλβινγκ: "I am frightened, because there is in me something ghost-like, from which I can never free myself... I almost think we are all ghosts, all of us Pastor Manders. It is not just what we've inherited from our mother and father that walks in us, it's all sorts of dead ideas and all sorts of old and obsolete beliefs. They are not alive in us, but they live in us. And we can never free ourselves from them. They lie as thick as grains of sand.And we are all so horribly afraid of the light .

Ο Ίψεν με το έργο αυτό προκάλεσε ταραχή στην κοινωνία του 1881. Ακόμα και η προοδευτική σχετικά κοινωνία της Σκανδιναβίας δεν ήταν έτοιμη για αυτή τη γροθιά.
Η αναζήτηση της προσωπικής ελευθερίας, η δυναμική της σχέσης μητέρα με γιο, η μειονεκτική θέση της γυναίκας, η αιμομιξία και το δικαίωμα στην ευθανασία είναι μόνο λίγα από τα ερωτήματα που θέτει σε λίγες μόνο πράξεις, λίγες μόνο λέξεις. Αλλά αρκετές, ώστε να κάνουν το έργο να θαφτεί από κριτικούς και κοινό για πολλά χρόνια και να ανέβει τελικά στο θεατρικό σανίδι 13 χρόνια μετά την έκδοση του.
Προσωπικά το βρίσκω ακόμα πολύ επίκαιρο, το απόλαυσα και θέλω να το δω στο θέατρο!
Οι "βρυκολακες", νεκρές κουβέντες, ήρθαν μετά θάνατον για να ξυπνήσουν μέσα μας συναισθήματα και σκέψεις.

فقط اینو بگم که زنان قبل از اینکه بخوان از حقوق برابر حرف بزنن باید ایبسن بخونن.
واقعا این طرز تفکر برای اون دوران بینظیر بوده

دومین نمایشنامه ای که از این نویسنده می خونم، خوشم اومد از کارهاش. حالا بعداً "دشمن مردم" رو هم خواهم خوند.
محتوا
مضمون این نمایشنامه هم، مثل "خانه ی عروسک" بازنگری در اخلاق مسیحی قرن نوزدهمه. هر چند، به خلاف خانه ی عروسک، که فقط این اخلاق رو نفی کرد و چیزی رو به جاش پیشنهاد نکرد، این به نظر می رسید که میخواد یه چیزی شبیه به اخلاق نیچه ای رو به عنوان جایگزین اخلاق مسیحی پیشنهاد کنه.
فرم
شخصیت ها و دیالوگ ها، کمابیش عالی بودن. خیلی ماهرانه، بدون هیچ تصریحی، فقط از طریق دیالوگ های دونفر، شخصیت ها رو کاملاً معرفی می کرد و آدم لذت میبرد از این که خودش، بدون راهنمایی نویسنده، زوایای این شخصیت رو کشف کرده.
اما اشکال بزرگش، داستان بود. داستانش، اصلاً خوب نبود و در انتها، می دیدی جز یه سری اتفاق پراکنده، داستان واحد قشنگی نخوندی. همین طور پایان بندی هم کمابیش بد بود. یه مقداری اغراق آمیز بود که بلافاصله بعد از گفت و گوی پسر و مادر، این اتفاق بیفته.

این نمایشنامه در فارسی با نام «ارواح» یا «اشباح» هم شناخته میشود.
حرفش این است که یک سری عقاید کهنه از قدیم به ما ارث رسیده و مثل پرهیب در وجودمان رخنه کرده، باید سعی کنیم با روشنگری موضعمان در برابر این سنتها را مشخص کنیم.
ایبسن، پرهیبها را بعد از عروسکخانه نوشت. در آنجا اگر نورا شوهرش را ترک میکرد، در پرهیبها با شوهر خیانتکارش میماند (به خاطر فشار جامعه). این زن، قدرت خانه را در دست میگیرد و کارهای بزرگی انجام میدهد که مردم فکر میکنند شوهرش عامل آنهاست، ولی در پشت پرده، یک زن دردمند وحود دارد. خانم آلوینگ در دلش، علیه «وظیفه» داشتن در قبال خانوادهای که فاسد است میشورد. اما به هر صورت، در خانهاش میماند.
بنظر من نورا و خانم آلوینگ در تقابل با هم نیستند. اتفاقا هر دو زنانی جسور و روشنفکر اند (یا دست کم زمانی روشن میشوند). ما نمیدانیم عاقبت نورایی که میرود چه میشود، اما عاقبت خانم آلوینگی که میماند هم چندان خوشایند نیست؛ با پسری مبتلا به سفلیسِ پدر.
هنریک ایبسن بعد از این نمایشنامه، دشمن مردم را مینویسد که آن هم بیانیهای استادانه است در به چالش کشیدن آرای عموم مردم و دورویی انسانها.

La presa di coscienza che la signora Alving compie all’inizio della piece teatrale, è di quelle forti, da Ibsen: sposata senza amore, sottomessa alle ipocrisie di una società calvinista, chiusa e bigotta, accetta di vivere nella menzogna pensando di salvaguardare almeno il figlio che manda a vivere lontano, e l'analisi che fa della sua vita è lucida e senza veli. Poi, nel giro di una notte, tutto si decompone, le falsità celate a lungo smaschereranno il cuore nero dei personaggi interno a lei, e non potrà far altro, alla fine, che scontare la sua vigliaccheria.
Mi aspettavo di più, ho preferito Casa di bambola. Là il personaggio di Nora possedeva un crescendo intenso. La Signora Alving l’ho sentita meno potente, specie nella seconda parte. Forse dovrei vederlo in teatro.
