One of the most gripping and original sci-fi series of recent years, The Silent Earth is a breathtaking glimpse into a terrifying future. The Earth is in ruins. Cities and nations destroyed. Those who survive the onslaught succumb to the cold blackness of winter. A handful of machines finally emerge into the light, lost and directionless. They are the last remnants of civilisation. Brant is a synthetic - a machine who has the appearance and emotions of the humans who made him. He is hunted across the wasteland by cruel scavengers known as Marauders who are intent on cannibalising his body to prolong their own lives. Brant carries a great burden as he tries to return a secret that can change the world. Against the unforgiving desert, the twisted denizens of this new world and his own dark past he needs to find a way back at any cost.
Mark R. Healy is an author and musician from Brisbane, Australia. From an early age he loved to create, and often assembled his own illustrated books with accompanying stories - and then forced his parents to buy them.
Unfortunately this model was not scalable and Mark now seeks to promote his works to a wider audience.
Mark has also combined his storytelling prowess with music, creating a project called ‘Hibernal’ through which he interweaves original sci-fi stories with his own music to create an immersive theatrical experience for the listener. Combined with a professional voice cast and sound effects, these “audio movies” are available online through iTunes, Bandcamp and Amazon under the name ‘Hibernal’.
The characters are grim but nuanced and I enjoyed the way the backstories unfolded. Though this idea has been done before I was able to empathise with the unusual main protagonist (nice writing Healy) which brought the book alive. I often root for the bad guys if the heroes get up my nose, to be inevitably disappointed when they somehow prevail.
Its sort of a Sci Fi noire that delivers a message without preaching. There is something here for the hard science fan and the emotional reader.
Three good books for the price of one. Healy takes an interesting premise and turns it into a whole new approach to post-apocalypse fiction. While the series really flows together, each book can stand well enough on its own. As one complete work it really shines.
The premise is a world after humans were intelligent machines are all that is left. While the machines (clanks) are what remains, they were designed and built to copy humans down to their thoughts and emotions. It really begs the question; what is "human"? Brant, the stories protagonist, has many adventures and tribulations while trying to complete his mission to restore life to the dead world.
Many twists, and a few surprises. A very good read.
Quarantine does have its advantages. It was a thrill having a trilogy to look forward to every day. I was rivited with the idea of a synthetic android who has been downloaded with every part of a man’s being. It opens the door to what makes us human? Are we infact just a bag of organic matter? Throughout the book this theme remained in my head and I was constantly debating this concept. A well written book.
This was such a great story. I became very invested in the characters, and was sad when it ended. I read the trilogy as one big book so there was no waiting between books. I am starting Mark Healy’s “The Reach” series now and look forward to more stories from this author. I would strongly suggest that you check him out!
This is such a unique perspective on what happens after world-wide devastation. Robots with human feelings bring life back to the planet. I look forward to much more from Mark Healy.
I utterly LOVED this trilogy. I loved the whole premise, the characters and how well they are developed, the plot with all its twists and turns, none feeling forced or out of whack with previous chapters. I couldn't stop reading and felt bereft when I reached the end, though satisfied as well.
So original, makes me wonder how someone could imagine it. My only negative is that it seemed to drag at times. Maybe it was just me, so engrossed in the story that I wanted to see what was next. One of the most creative books I've ever read...
I've read all three books in the Silent Earth Trilogy and they are amazing. The tension in the story builds with each book. Amazing and satisfying ending. The underlying premise makes the series really thought provoking "what is it that really makes us human?". Definitely worth reading. Immensely enjoyable read!
I first learned of Mark Healy through his music project, Hibernal, When I found out that Mark was going to bring the storylines of his music projects to print by way of novels, I was ecstatic.
One of my favorite writers has been Stephen King, just because of the way he writes and the way that he captures your attention. Mark Healy must channel Stephen because these novels are the same way! The character building, the predicaments, the fast paces adventure and the old 'Murphy's Law' of if anything can go wrong, it WILL go wrong!
I have no idea how his creativity works, but it just blows me away with how he can capture and hold my attention for hours upon hours of trying to keep up with the action! This series was a real page turner for me!
