If Sunaya and Iannis thought there would be time to rest after returning from their last mission, they are sorely mistaken. The Minister sends them to face off with yet more dangerous enemies—this time in a lawless port in remote Garai, where pirates and slavers thrive, and everyone is fair game.
To hide their undercover mission, Sunaya and Iannis travel to Garai as official guests to a state funeral. But Sunaya’s luck runs out when she finds out her father is on the guest list, and worse, runs straight into him and his family. For now, her deadly secret is safe. But once they discover her true identity, they may not be willing to suffer her alive. . . .
In this book we travel to another country, and I quite enjoyed it. The underlying theme was definitely family, although the reunion between Sunaya and her father was a bit anti-climactic. I guess that's what happens when you're both all mature about it! Anyhow, another entertaining volume in the series. Series and book are definitely recommended.
Fun and entertaining as always! I absolutely loved seeing more of the characters all their different sides. I enjoyed the addition of the new characters as well. The story was fast paced and exciting! I look forward to more adventures in the next book!
Decieved by Magic (The Baine Chronicles #6) Sunaya & Iannis are sent by the minister on a mission to face off with yet more dangerous enemies-this time in a lawless port in remote Garai, where pirates and slavers thrive, and everyone is fair game. This novel will take you on an adventure traveling to another continent. The writing style complements the genre as this author creates a new world with unrivaled designs. A blend of Urban Fantasy, meets Steampunk meets Paranormal in this magical series. A highly captivating saga with intrigue & danger intertwined with plot twists. Looking forward to reading the next novel in this spellbinding series.
Awesome! I think the best part is when Sunaya . It somehow took a big weight off my chest. She also is starting to implement a new system for helping children with their magic powers.
Summary: Sunaya meets !!! Character development (Sunaya matures) Assassination attempts Cute Iannis x Sunaya moments
I really like this series. I can't say there was anything special to make this story a stand out, other than perhaps Sunaya meeting her father. But the stories generally fit like a glove and are always a pleasure to read.
Review of Deceived by Magic by Jasmine Walt Again, I have had the honour to receive an ARC from the author, Jasmine Walt, in exchange for an honest review. Like always I will start out with mentioning that if you have not yet read or started this series, then you should give it a go, especially if you like paranormal fantasy and new worlds to explore. In this sixth installment, Sunaya and Iannis are tasked by the Minister to go on a mission in a lawless port in remote Garai. To accomplish this without putting trade and relations at risk, they travel to Garai under the cover of a state funeral. Garai was described very well and with a lot of interesting details about culture and traditions. It seems to be inspired by some Asian ways, yet mixed with some personal touches by the author herself. Throughout this book, some things, like Sunaya’s strained relationship with her Aunt, are explained and possible ways for its solution are laid out. We also dive into Sunaya’s relationships on her paternal side, and some interesting things occur in relation to this. Generally, there is great character and relationship development throughout this book, and the world building is interesting and alive. Unfortunately, I was slightly bothered by the feeling of not going anywhere. Though the characters and the inter-character relations develop, the plot does not. It feels as if it is stalling in some places, like there is no real goal at this moment, and that makes me kind of sad. Though it was interesting to know what happened in Garai, it did not feel as if our main characters made any kind of real progress in finding a solution. Furthermore, some of the scenes felt a little bit forced/strained, e.g. the passionate scenes between Sunaya and Iannis, as they are all quite alike. Some difference would be cool, like maybe a different intro/outcome, some sweetness etc., I don’t know…. On the other hand, some of the scenes are beautiful and really tells of great development, e.g. the scene where Sunaya shifts and plays with some children. It tells of ease and acceptance and the way it was written was awesome. All in all, I believe Walt has written another successful installment of her Baine series, though some small tweaks could be made in the future to carry the series determinedly forward.
I have a feeling I started reading the Baine chronicles yesterday. And I know I will read them again in a near future. It is an addicting series and I am impatient to have the next book in my hands. For this sixth installment Jasmine Walt went deeper into the painting of Sunaya world. If the Federation sounds like a pre-industrial, steampunk North America, Garai is really closed China inspired. I would not be surprised if the port that our heroes visit was inspired by Hong-Kong. With this expansion came also to light some darker side of the traditions. The rift between, race, sex and upbringing. Sunaya is shocked when faced to some unfairness of her world but reluctantly understand she cannot solve everything on a whim. I think that is some really important character development. It was really nice to be introduced to new characters of the upper politician circles and see how Sunaya fare with them with her new position. And knowledge. I liked to hate Garret in the beginning then started to warm up to him like Sunaya did. The plot was as good as the other book. And I agree with our favorite hybrid, hard cards are far from being played yet.
I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I always love Sunaya and Iannis!! Deceived by Magic was a fun adventure, and I particularly enjoyed the evolving subplot about Sunaya's paternal relations!!
Here we are at book six in the Baine Chronicles and the books are still as fun as always. Sunaya and Iannis must attend the funeral and coronation of another country’s leaders. However, they have been tasked to take down a lab where the resistance is manufacturing a virus to kill shifters in that same country and as the mission isn’t sanctioned, they can’t be caught. Add to that, someone is trying to murder Sunaya and will stop at nothing to succeed. One new aspect of the series I’m really enjoying is Sunaya’s father and his family. As I don’t want to spoil this book, things happen that really make me excited to see what’s going to happen next. I can’t wait to see what kind of hijinks the family dynamics will bring to the series. And, that parrot! I just love the ether parrot who finally gets a name in this book. One thing in this book that disappointed me a tiny bit was that we didn’t get to see Fenris very much, but that is understandable because of what was going on in the book. Which brings me to the next thing in the book which I enjoyed: Garrett. I think we will be seeing a lot more of him, and I think there are great things in store. I have an idea what's up, and I can't wait to find out if I am right. This book has set up some interesting things to come. Confused about the things I've brought up? Read the book now and find out what I mean! If you haven’t started this series, you should immediately: the books are action-packed, fun, well-written, and have great romance, and it’s really, really hard to wait between books. If you are a long-time fan, this book is a great addition to the series. Highly recommend!
Thanks to the author for the e-copy which I voluntarily reviewed. This same review will be posted on both Goodreads and Amazon.
Sunaya, Iannis and Director Chen are pulled away by Minister Garling to attend the funeral of the Emperor in Gaira. In addition to a ceremony choosing the successor. The Minister has alternative plans to rid another resistance compound in another section of Gaira while everyone's in mourning. Unfortunately, nefarious plans have been set in motion as another attempt on Sunaya's life is made. In a series of dangerous twists and turns throughout their journey, their deceived and constantly on guard. It seems Sunaya has more enemies than she thought.... This is an absolute must-read! I love the Baine Chronicles and Book Six has quickly become my favorite so far. So many revelations and new characters; new mysteries to solved! Jasmine leaves you hanging on every word! It's truly amazing. If you haven't started reading Baine Chronicles, I highly recommend book one and go from there. You won't be disappointed! 5 stars!
What an adventure this book is. Travelling to a different continent. Air ships that crash, boarding pirates, tricking mages who may harm them, and all the while running against time. I'm still a bit breathless with all the action that this book packed.
It was really nice to know that Sunaya's father was not the heartless chap we had almost decided he was. I mean a mage who takes up with a shifter and then leaves her pregnant high and dry. Then takes up with another woman and has a family with her...little wonder that we didn't much care for the character.
However he did redeem himself. After all how could he do anything about a child he was not even aware of! Still it will be interesting to see how much he supports his first born child in the books to come.
I am absolutely astounded by the level of skill this author has. Not only did she spend the first two books introducing us to her world in loads of detail, she then introduced multiple cities within the federation. Now, we have an entirely new continent with a very Asian feel, which she has gone into immense detail to present to us. The level of creativity she has is nothing short of astonishing.
Now, the story itself has gone even deeper into the fight against the resistance, and we finally get more insight into who her father is, and her coming to terms with him. This may very well be my fav in the series, and I very much look forward to a re-read.
Not a bad story, but lacked punch and didn't really move the overall story forward. Sunaya begins to deal with magical children from non-mage families, goes to their version of China to attend a state funeral and selection of a new emperor, clandestinely deals with some remnants of the resistance, and faces some family issues brought up at the end of the previous book.
Overall, this felt like an interlude between story arcs laying down the framework to the next arc.
SPOILERS! It seems like everything happens a little too easy in this book. The storm on the sea... I know a spell... The first house they come to, oh I'll sell my daughter to you she is able to cook. Oh and my favorite is that Chen'a brother in law was the owner of the buildings that they were using for gun running... I love this series but really everything fell into their laps.
This is such an amazing series that I can't help but devour. Sunaya is spectacular, she stays true to herself but is maturing. The way Iannis respects her is endearing and I love their relationship. Family ties are revealed and the Resistance is slowly being brought down. I can't wait for the finale!
Sunaya, Iannis and others go on another adventure to try to stop the Resistance. They have no idea all the trouble they'll face even deceit by someone they should have been able to trust. Sunaya learns the hard way that some of her biological family are completely nuts. The best part is Sunaya is bringing home someone special.
I so wish there was no delay between books!! I truly envy the person who gets to read them straight through! Although then they would not be enjoying them at this moment! I so look forward to the next book! I loved them all!!
My favorite of the Baine Chronicles so far! Can't wait to read the next one. These books are one of my guilty pleasures. I love them because they're well written, quick reads with solid characters that I care about, with plenty of different kinds of action *wink wink* Iannis and Sunaya foreva <3
Amazing! I think this could be the best one yet. Hope the next one is ouy, had to buy this on kindle amazon as no free link online to read. Was well worth it, just wish i didnt read so quick as i do lol
A foreign country, attempted murder, gun running, fireworks, pirates, typhoons, fighting, intimate relations, lost family, poisoning, and just plain ole bada$$ mages. Plenty of action abounds in this story from one continent to another. Life and death decisions are around every corner.
I truly can't say enough good things about this series, and I consistently and eagerly am always looking forward to a new installment! Ms. Walt has created a fascinating and yet somehow familiar world, with interesting and well-developed characters.
In the continuing scope of the series. I believe that Ms. Wait has once again proved that she is still finding ways to keep her readers interest, and has not let the story line drag.
Hello all. I recently found about this series and like them very much. I've got all the books except this one. For some reason i can't find it anywhere to be delivered to me. Can someone please help me?
