Sarah is a Muslim girl faced with challenges and obstacles to remain true to her religion. Whilst she endures hardship, she also found friendship and love.
Jonah is the 'modern day' Romeo and enjoys the company of women but when he met Sarah, his whole world changed.
Both are from different background and religion but yet their path kept crossing. Is it fate or just coincidence?
Norhafsah Hamid was born in 1973 and received primary and secondary education in Malaysia. She then proceeded to pursue her studies in United Kingdom until she graduated with a law degree from Reading University, United Kingdom. She completer her Bar in Malaysia and went back to United Kingdom to work for a year. She then came back to Malaysia to commence her practice as an Advocate and Solicitor, specializing in civil litigation matters. She completed her Diploma in Syariah & Legal Practise and has been handling various Syariah matters.
Currently she has taken a break from civil practise and co-founded an NGO called 'Nadi Anissa Muslim Women Organisation. she now dedicates her time to her family and Islam.
The story is quite cliché and predictable. It is about a girl deemed, 'she is not like the other girls; she's special; a good muslimah who doesn't do dating'. Then, she attracted a handsome tall man with blue eyes. Played hard to get. Gaduh macam cerita Korea sebab perempuan tu degil. Next, the man reverted to Islam, cari perempuan tu balik, dan kahwin.
I am more interested with the story of Jaws and Linda. Jaws lelaki kampung dari Kelantan suka perli Linda orang KL rambut blonde. Kata Jaws dekat Linda, "Mata ko cacat sebab warna biru." Jaws juga bagi ajaran sesat dekat Johan. Johan nak belajar BM sebab nak impress Sarah. Tapi Jaws ajar dialek Kelantan dan ajar ayat bukan-bukan. Bongok la Jaws.
This book only has only 26 reviews despite it being one of the most famous literary works on Bookstagram. I guess not many of the Bookstagrammers are active on Goodreads.
Many people loved/enjoyed this book, I didn't. Here's why:
1. The 'not like other girls' mentality. If you focus on the writings, you will notice about how it was mentioned multiple times that 'she is not like other girls'. If you don't know what NLOG (not-like-other-girls) means, you can search 'r/notlikeothergirls' on YouTube. You'll find multiple videos, watch them and learn.
2. The main character is a Mary Sue. I wouldn't say she is a 100% perfect character, since I've found that she also have flaws. But what made me see her as a Mary Sue is that all the people around her think she is great, she is perfect, and she is praised multiple times throughout the book which annoyed me.
3. The judgmental mentality/the 'holier-than-thou' thinking. In no way, do I support sins. But when reading, the book came off as being somewhat judgmental towards those who are freehaired, or not as modest as the main character.
4. The bad boy x good girl trope. There is nothing wrong with tropes and cliches, if it's executed well. The problem here is that the writing of this trope is so generic and similar to what you can find on Wattpad. The only difference is that it has an Islamic twist.
4. The dialogues. I can tell the writer enjoys classic books, because I feel like it was reflected in the dialogues. They made me thought, "who talks like that?". All the dialogues seemed to be from old books, with the exception of the Kelantanese dialogues.
Unpopular opinion, but I might have enjoyed this book more if all the dialogues are in Kelantanese. Well, maybe not all. But I know how Kelantanese talk and their responses and I want to see the main character reacted in Kelantanese whenever the 'Romeo' annoyed her.
5. I think Letters to God is better, though. Perhaps this was an earlier work and the writer has improved.
6. Note for the author: for Islamic romance novels, you can refer to Fatimah Syarha's and A. Ubaidillah Alias's, or even Habiburrahman el-Shirazy's works for references on Islamic romance. For the writing and dialogue, I suggest you read more contemporary fiction for better ideas on dialogues that don't sound like they are from Mills & Boon novels from the 70s & 80s. I pray you drop the 'NLOG' mentality because that is 2 decades ago.
I thank you for writing an English book about an Islamic girl main character that girls can look up to, but there is room for improvements.
One of my favorite local novel. Heaven Sent by @norhafsah.hamid. Honestly, I don’t really like reading novels. I can easily count the novel that I have in my book collection. But when I came across this book, I fall in love with the title & cover illustration!
Just so you know, when I fall in love with a book, I will buy it as soon as possible without looking for its review or synopsis beforehand. Coz for me, if the title itself is strong enough to be the reason for me to own it, then it must be a good book. (My own logic. 😂)
I love the heroin of this novel, Sarah. Such a brilliant girl with a strong passion for studying, as well as a good muslimah who’s really strict in taking care of her deen. Being a student in a non muslim country, and surrounded by non muslim friends aren’t the excuse to make her far from her religion; instead she managed to make others fall in love with Islam.
I don’t wanna say much about the storyline coz I might write a spoiler here. I don’t know whether I can call this book a love novel; yes there’s love between a man & a woman in it, (Sarah & Jonah) but it’s not a lovey dovey one. And it’s not really a love story. It’s more to a story between a slave & her God, and a journey on how someone found God in his life. .
Sarah's story continued in this next book; Heaven Sent. This time, we followed deeply the story of Sarah, the girl who hates the idea of dating, and Jonah, the Romeo that loves to be surrounded by girls.
My thoughts of Heaven Sent: -I love how the author wrote more deeply about Sarah and Jonah using a third pov unlike in Letters To God. This time, we learned more about Jonah and their feelings toward each other. I love their love story so much. We also can see how much Jonah tried his best to impress Sarah and learn about Islam until he found himself loving our beautiful religion.
Oh, how I wish I can get a man just like Jonah. He's such a dreamy, charming, gentlemanly, and respectful. Oh God, please give me someone like Jonah!
On top of that, I love how the author makes an approach to her readers by using the beautiful reminder of hadith and the verses of Al-Quran. It's such a wonderful and pleasant thing to do. Not gonna lie, sometimes my eyes will welling with tears every time I read the reminders. I love it so much.
Can I say that Sarah's characteristics are just like mine? I really can relate to her. Hate the idea of dating, am a private person, and love to put my head on books.
Anyway, Heaven Sent is without a doubt my favorite book in this series. Can't wait to read the next book; Rough Diamond which is about Linda and Jaws if I am not mistaken.
After you've read this book, you'll know that Islam is a religion that take a full care of its worshippers. Even though they're many prohibition in Islam, but it's for our own good. This book also display that Islam is a way of life and can be easily practiced by all walks of life.😄😄
Sarah, the main character, shows that Islam is not discriminating women by wearing hijab in public and in front of ajnabi (person who she can marry). Women need to cover their aurat as protection from evil eyes of the men. Islam also allow us to make friends with all people regardless of races and religions. 🧕🏻👱🏻♀️👩🏻🦱👩🏽
In term of love, by reading this book we acknowledge how to approach a woman to be our spouse in halal way and following Islam's guideline, from the beginning until nikah.🥰😘
I think that this book is lovely actually. Though I wouldn't rate it as 5 stars mainly because it has some grammatical errors and also typo. This book should be edited first. However, I would strongly recommend this to the teenagers.
This book somehow reminded me to remain firm and steadfast on my religion no matter what happens. Sarah has a very strong character and an independent woman whom I adore. As for Jonah, it makes me realize that anyone, no matter who they are in the past, good or bad, they can change themselves by being a better Muslim, if Allah wills.
Heaven Sent is a continuation of Sarah’s story, a Muslim girl who pursue her study at Reading University. This time we have a more in-depth life of Sarah, an overview of before, during and after the alcohol issue. I love seeing how faithful Sarah is, practicing her beliefs despite living in a new culture and lifestyle. In real life, I know how hard it is to stay faithful when there are so many temptations around us. Furthermore, in Heaven Sent, we can see clearly how Jonah starts to approach Sarah and raises the jealousy inside Linda. Linda triggers me so much in this book as she keeps attacking Sarah and spreading false rumors about her.
Other than that, the author did not fail to include gentle reminders about the beauty in Islam and her writing always moved me towards the end of the story. There’s something in her writing that makes the story smooth as butter. Next, Sarah never fails to impress me with her character development over time. However, for the first half it seems quite repetitive from the first book but maybe you’ll enjoy it as a recap from the previous story. Nonetheless, the story keeps getting interesting and I can't wait to finish the whole series.
Thank you Iman Publication for giving me this book in exchange for an honest review.
Although im loving this one, there's a few things i dislike such as how people in this book repeatedly praised Sarah "she's not like the other girl". I think im fine if it's only happened once or twice. Like how people praised her not wearing a single make up compare to the other girls. Nevertheless, it is still a good book & i learn a lot from this, it's just not the best in my opinion but still adore it with all my heart 💟🌷
"God has given each of us different heart. Some hearts are just blacker than others. Forget them. Just remember, god is great. This is just a minor hiccup in your life. Every one of us won't be spared from being tested. We accept it, learn from it and move on."
Heaven Sent is a beautiful story about discovering life experience of a Muslim young girl while remaining true to Islam. I was hooked by the cover portraying Reading University in the background and finished reading in less than 3 hours. Reading University provides added values and romantic set-up for the novel. Although it is light reading, the book offers subtle and clear messages of Islamic teachings and practices. I can relate to the main characters, Sarah and Jonah. Being young and romantic naturally is a phase encountered by every youth. Norhafsah has become my favourite author as her writing always touches my heart. Recommended book for youths and the young at hearts.
Will definitely get my daughters to read it when they reach the right age. It tells of a story of a girl who has very high principles and sticks to them. Lessons to be learned - when you trust in Allah, Allah will give you in ways you never know. Sarah, the main character in the book, is definitely a role-model for young muslim girls in today's world. Mabrook sis Hafsah on a great inspiring book!
Muslim friendly chic lit i would say as reading this reminds me of my time in high school, reading novels and wanting to pursue my studies in oversea. Now at the age of 30, it's gives me butterflies, in a good way though 😂 . Alhamdulillah for my life before, now and later.
Heaven Sent is a complete story of Sarah and Yousuf from the beginning their uni years in Reading until they got married. A good happy ending, and an expected one.
Letters to God got me to start journalling again. Of course thanks to my bestfriends for suggesting journalling too, they were right, i find it therepeuting.
Letters to God is a series of Sarah's love letters to God when she was in Uni, written through the point of view of a practising Muslim girl. Heaven Sent gives us the complete story of Sarah and Yoousef.
İf you hate happy ending, this book is not the book for you. İf you want to feel a bit dreamy, uve chosen the right one.
For me, this book reminds me of what a Muslim is, being an individual muslim, the basic core of how a Muslim should carry themselves as written in the Quran. About our faith in God, what must and mustn't be done if one is a practising Muslim, in a lighter approach.
A good reminder to refresh our memories on what we've learnt back in school and keeping good faith on what's coming now and later. İ don't read novels for years and this book got me back into it.. so I'm quite impressed.
Took me 2 weeks to finish it though but it's ok.
Overall, i like the content and the writers approach into reminding us on how we should present ourselves as Muslims.
PS : I'm just at awe. The writer wrote books written from Youseff and Linda's pov (the characters in the stories). I'm looking forward to reading Divine blessings too.
I’ve read this books series when I was in semester break. Which is about 3 months had passed when I’m writing this review.
I read the abridge one. But there is no abridge version yet on good-reads. Hence I’m going to leave the same review through all series.
I like the main character sarah. She obeys to the Islamic laws and recommendations, take good care of herself, she’s an independent girl and respectful to her parents and family. Sarah was not only taking care of her friends, but also her friend’s parents. Which I think is a good character that we should follow.
But I don’t like Sarah’s character of being bad tempered. Whereby, all of her friends know if there is thing that she doesn’t like, she will be mad.
To me, being a muslim, we should not getting mad easily. There are things that we can be mad or better be silent, or we can give advice appropriately.
Plot-wise. Some people commented that it was cliche. But personally, it’s fine with me. Because, throughout reading the book, you get the hidden messages the writer trying to convey.
I just love this book ! Even though it’s kind of cliche,, but I love it. How the character evolve, and i really love the friendship! I wish to have that kind of friendship too. . This is a sequel for Letters To God so the characters are the same. In this story, it tells us the story of Sarah and Jonah. How Jonah wanted to know Sarah, how the characters evolved. And when Sarah had done with her law study in Reading, how she started her new life and all that. And how she’ll meet her prince charming. Aww, i just love everything about this book. I rate it 4 just because it’s kind of cliche, but its okay though for me. Hahahahaha sorry 😅 I love Sarah’s relationship with her family and how she trusts her father to choose the right man for her. And i truly in awe how she manage to stay true to herself. I mean, being a Muslim. Makes me ponder upon myself. Anyway, it is a great book ! So many things I’ve learned through reading this ! Thumbs up !
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Heaven Sent is a story about Sarah, a Muslim girl who pursues her study at Reading University. Sarah is a faithful Muslim girl who strictly abides with her principles as a Muslim in foreign country. I can say that the story is quite cliché and predictable (I’m referring to Sarah and Jonah, their encounters and everything) but it can make your heart flutters as it’s mostly happens in the book not real life. Anyway, I enjoyed the story even though I found the first half of the book is quite repetitive from the first book “Letters to God” (by repetitive, the whole things are kinda like copy and paste from the first book) but it’s bearable. Nonetheless, the second part of the book is rather interesting as it delves on Sarah’s journey at the end of her study + plus the arranged marriage things (I already can predict the situation before reading the next book) but the whole book is quite good and suitable for early readers.
I would say that the plot was quite predictable, but it was still very impactful in its own way!
Beautifully written, almost feel like I was reading a classic! I love how the author instilled the islamic values in this novel. It taught me how to implement it in life and also encouragingly inspired me to be better and not to be complacent with my Islamic knowledge. Sarah was truly one inspiring girl. I wish to have such strength and hard-willed heart like her!
The most salient lesson that I have learned was our pasts were really didn't matter in the eyes of our Creator. I love it when every character in the novel was showing their capability towards betterment. It just showed how Allah could always gives His guidance to any person He wants.
All in all, it is a worthy read for me, both for my soul and pleasure. :)
The story line itself is quite straight forward, predictable and cliché but strange enough you can actually relate to the characters..
I like how the author explained about Reading University and how Sarah felt about the environment and atmosphere.. made we wanna go there and experience it myself..
Anddddd i really like the friendship portrayed in the novel.. Gideon, Andy, Cynthia, Usman (just to name a few).. and the side story about Linda, Lieza and Michael.. and of course Mat Bond and Jaws.. lol jaws! You really made my day.. The malay dialogues with translations really added the spice to the story..
Anyone reading this may say that it's a simple story but in this simple story, the author actually managed to send messages to the readers.. insya Allah..
I already expected that this was going to be a very typical Islamic love story. Even so, there is something about this book that I decided to rate it 4/5. The author did a great job by using simple English and very direct so that someone like me who was getting back into reading was able to enjoy it and finished it in a few days. There are also gentle reminders about the beauty of Islam that I just realized I don't know how to put it into words even so this book positively moved me. We as Muslims also need those kinds of reminders that can make us feel very grateful to be born Muslims. I respect Sarah for her strong principles following the deen as there are so many temptations in this modern world.
Jonah and Sarah! I love Sarah's character. She knows what she wants and brave.
I love the way the writer plotted the story. It is full of Sarah's struggle in her studies and Jonah's journey in understanding Islam with some romantic scene at the end of the story.
Some quote that I love:
"Similarly, it is compulsory for a Muslim girl or woman to wear hijab or to cover her awra, as stated in the Holy Qur'an but some girls choose not to follow. Why they choose not to follow is something I can't tell you. It's their personal choice hence their reasons. Only they can tell you why" (page 131)
"A religion is something we must follow otherwise there is no point in saying that we profess a certain religion." (page 133)
Done reading. Boleh baca ni dulu baru Letters to God atau LTG dulu pun okay. Sama jugak ceritanya pasal Sarah. Cuma dalam novel ni in brief the author write on how Sarah met Jonah. How the characters develop and interact to each other’s. The book tell us about the relationship between woman and man in islamic perspectives, friendships in different religions, culture and diversity. Not that to heavy tp still a part of #soulfood yg pada i author sampaikan mesej dalam penulisan yg simple tapi x berat sangat. Islamik tp mcm macam mana ya nak cakap, mcm x heavy dan senang untuk difahami haa something like that.
It was amazing... I love the dynamic that Sarah has with each of her friends, the dynamic that Jonah has with Mat Bond, Jaws and Gideon. I love that Mat Bond and Jaws made an effort to help both Jonah AND Linda towards the right path, that they don't just let Linda be on her wrong path. I love Gideon and Richard's sense of humor. I love that this book isn't just about typical romance between a guy and a girl, it's also about how their faith towards Allah SWT that lead them to each other. There are a lot of learnable lessons and Islamic values in this book, suitable for people that wants to understand them through stories (but would still need to refer to more knowledgeable people).
The story of Sarah, and her encounter with Jonah. Yes, it is the classic playboy x good girl trope but that trope is famous for a reason ehemm. I love the fact that not all things circle around them, and that the heroin have a busy life of her own (as a student, i relate with her 100%) It is an Islamic love story - the story of a love kept safe and protected.
The cons is the "not like other girl" cliches that was stressed in some parts of the books. I believe that we are past shaming girl for being girl (the makeup, dress up etc). So i think that the "not like other girl" part is really unnecessary. Sarah is just fine, even if she is like other girls :)
This was somewhat disappointing. Descriptions of characters can come across as relatively shallow and the author tend to emphasized on surface level traits to symbolize the purity and goodness of a person. I appreciate the useful reminders throughout the book especially as she tends to quote surahs or hadith, but that's mostly it. I read the two previous books before this and I do understand that some of the plots overlap as it includes the same characters, but sometimes it feels too repetitive.
Quite a cliché love story but the way the author explained about Islam is very precise and easy to understand. She clearly explained how and what Islam has outlined for us. Most importantly, readers can get an overview of how is it like living in a foreign country where Muslims are a minority. Kudos to the author =)
P/s: I am so impressed with the part where one of the characters asked Sarah why is she different from the rest of his Muslim friends. The answer for it was perfect!!!
The book fill up the gap on the missing pieces from the first book. It is nice how the book is structure and organize in such a way it could be put side by side with Letter to God whereby one serve as a story and the other as a diary. Sarah character in the book and her connection with the rest of the characters developed and expanded well in this book. It also shows the emotions of Sarah well and better understanding of the situation or problem faced to the readers more vividly
I didn’t expect myself to LOVE this book so wholeheartedly! It has the perfect balance of romance and religion for a Ramadhan Read. I even shed a few tears at some of the duas. Although it is a typical islamic love story gitu but YALL I AM A SUCKER FOR CLICHE STORIES! Fave character: Jaws 😂I never thought I would find humor in this book yet I was “Bongok la Jaws” all the way😂
I am looking forward to read the last book of the series and Jonah’s revert story.
I highly recommend this book to all young adults out there. It has a lot of life lessons that you could learn. Especially about being a respectful woman. You have to love yourself more before you want to love others. Put more values on you. Know your worth. And be strict with your principle because that’s how people will respect you.
