Because I Said So

Rate this book
This book will break your heart…then mend it back together again. BECAUSE I SAID SO crosses the world of the TEXAS HEROES with the beloved characters of Hell Yeah! to teach the eternal lesson that everyone deserves a second chance at love. As far as Brodie Walton is concerned, his life was over the day his beloved fiancé was killed in a senseless mass shooting. He doesn’t deserve happiness. He doesn’t even know how to go on. To give his life meaning, he seeks to save others as a first responder, so their loved ones won’t face the sorrow that he lives with each day. His plan seems to be coming together…until he meets his new partner. Shane Wilder jerks the rug out from under Brodie Walton, sending him reeling – awakening feelings and emotions that he has no desire to experience again. This baptism of fire brings out the worst in him. He lashes out at her, when all he really wants to do is hold her close and never let her go. Shane has been through the emotional wringer herself. After her divorce from an unfaithful husband, she’s sworn off men…until she meets her handsome, cantankerous boss. When Shane discovers why he’s thornier than a bramble bush, she sets out to show Brodie he has a right to be happy, she wants nothing more than to give him a reason to live. Yes, sometimes…Love Hurts. And sometimes, it’s the only thing that will save you.

** THIS WILL BE RIDDLED WITH SPOILERS**

I feel like I just got off of an emotional rollercoaster. This was one of the most difficult books I have ever read.  It was on my reader and I have no recollection of one clicking it, but I went with it.  Flying 100% blind.   It was one of those books that I would have researched in depth to avoid, yet I couldn't stop reading it.

◇Brodie was a hurtful, damaged soul. The book's prologue was about him and his fiance Mary.  He was proclaiming his undying love and proposed to her.  That same day, Mary was gunned down in a mass shooting, destroying Brodie.  He commited himself to work and didn't so much as look at another woman because that would be an insult to Mary's memory.  That is until Shane came to work as his partner.

◇Shane came across as a very weak heroine. She lacked self confidence and had very low self esteem.  She had been hurt by her ex husband when she found him with another woman in their home.   Instead of being sorry for what he did, he basically told her he was doing her a favor by being with her and had been cheating on her since the beginning of their marriage.  She worked hard to finish her degree and moved to central Texas to start over.  Which is where she entered Bodie's world.

Brodie was instantly horrible to Shane.  He wanted to continue being numb like he has been since Mary's death,  but Shane was making him feel things.  So he lashed out.

The truth was…Brodie could barely look at her. He knew it wasn’t Shane’s doing, but the fact that she was so vibrantly alive when Mary was dead made him furious. The presence of no other woman seemed to affect him this way. Brodie had no explanation, he only knew that being near Shane was almost unbearable

After gathering everything up, she stopped to buy a cup of coffee and when she turned around, she ran smackdab into…Brodie Walton, sloshing coffee all over his clean white shirt. “Goddammit!” He jumped backwards, then glared at her with irritation on his face. “You!” “I’m sorry.” “I didn’t see you.” “Why can’t I get away from you? Are you so desperate that you’re following me around?”

~he was critical of her and her appearance

“You want to be fucked, don’t you? You’ve been watching me with your tongue hanging out for weeks. You want me so much you’re sick from it, aren’t you? Poor little tomboy, Shane. Nobody wants to fuck her.”

~when he finally cracked and had sex with her, he wanted to hurt her so she would stop being nice to him and making him want her, in turn making him feel guilty -

as far as plans went, this was the best he could come up with. He’d get rid of Shane Wilder once and for all.

He’d give them both what they craved, so they’d realize the painful difference between wanting something and needing it for your own good.

When she’d flown apart, crying out his name, and melting in his arms – he thrust forward hard, let his own orgasm explode – at the very moment he bellowed Mary’s name.

You’re a do-gooder, aren’t you, Miss Shane? You have some insane idea that you’re going to save me.” What she didn’t understand was that he didn’t want to be saved. “Turn over, I don’t want to see your eyes while I take you.”

“You want me, even knowing that I don’t want you. Knowing that I’ll only ever want one woman.”.

This is going to be intense, Wilder. Rough. Animalistic. A male taking his pleasure in a willing female. That’s all I can offer you. Ready?”.

Even knowing I’ll pretend you’re someone else while I’m fucking you, you still want me. Just me.”

Just a few examples of his cruelty. The incident that was the worst for me was -

“I’m pregnant.”. “Am I the father?”

How can you say that to me? Don’t you know me at all?”

“Know you?” Brody raged. “No, I don’t know you. I don’t want to know you. I never wanted to know you!”

I’m not asking anything of you, Brodie.” “Fuck, no! You won’t ask anything of me! I didn’t want this. I don’t want a child.” He glared at her, his chest heaving. He owed no one an explanation. He owed no one a glimpse into dreams that he’d once had, dreams that had died with Mary. “Was this your plan all along?”

“I’m not sure how we’ll work this out, but I don’t want to see you again. If you don’t want to leave your job, I’ll leave mine. If you want to do what’s right,” he pointed at her middle, “you’ll fix this.”“Fix this? You want me to get rid of our baby?” When he raised his eyes, she was shocked anew at the venom she saw there. How could she ever have thought she knew this man? “That isn’t my baby. Just stay out of my way. Out of my sight. Whatever you choose to do, just don’t include me. I don’t want to have anything to do with either one of you.”

In true dramatic fashion, he storms off in his car. Once he drives for a bit he calms down and realizes what a huge mistake he made and immediately turns around to go talk to Shane. .....right into the path of a truck. Now he is in a coma for a few weeks. Shane does what he asks and finds another job, not knowing that he was turning around to take back the things he said. She sits with him, holding his hand, while he's in the coma but stops her visits when he wakes up, respecting his wishes. It takes Shane being in a life threatening situation (a couple weeks later) for him to grow a pair and go after her. At this point it felt like it was too little, too late in my opinion. He is of course all in from this point on, trying to win her back.

~no cheating, but the heroine is competing with the dead fiancé
~tremendous amount of pushing away
~no om drama
~decent seconday characters but Brodie's sister was an odd bird. She said something to the heroine that, even if it were true, was unnecessary in my opinion -

“This is Mary’s birthday. Brodie always takes flowers to the cemetery on her birthday. I have to tell you how much I respect you, Shane. I know Brodie cares for you and the baby, but to accept him like you have, knowing how he’ll always love Mary the most – I just don’t know if I could do it in your shoes.”

I don't think she was intentionally being mean but DUH!

~HFN ending that is not far in the future

GOING TO SKIP THIS ONE

This author is hit and miss for me but when you add some highly questionable behavior from both the hero and heroine. He still loves his wife and treats the heroine like a poor substitute.

Plus it's a second chance romance with them having loved others. Not for me. I will have to say...
HELL NO instead of Hell yeah!

Why did I read this??? I am such a sucker for redemption stories.
Brodie the asshat and Shane the doormat. A palm to forehead read.
Brodie treats Shane like dog poop for 2/3 of the story while taking advantage of her body in a coldly hurtful way. He waxes on about his dead fiance, Mary over and over straight through to the end.

The men in the story often talk like women.. not sure how to describe it better, but they vacillate between he-men like grunting to wo-men who talk about their feelings. Weird.
It all would have been good if i believed his 180 change better. Instead he leaves Shane hanging yet again... even after his epiphany that he loves her. I did like that Shane didn't trust his change of heart for a while.

DNF @ 30%. Brodie is massively mentally abusive no less than half a dozen times and Shane still has sex with him knowing he doesn't care about her. This author is losing me more and more with every book.

This was disturbing in that the level of humiliation and some might even call abusive behaviour the h was subjected to was unacceptable. That she put herself in some of those situation, makes her an idiot with no self respect.

Really liked this book

Sable Hunter is a new author for me and I will be reading her again. This book was full of pain and angst and even brought me to tears. Brodie the H is mean and cruel and there were times I hated him. He hurt Shane the h constantly. But she wasn't really a doormat or tstl she was very strong but she just wanted to be loved. She did show her strength after the first 50 percent of the book and boy did she make the H work for an HEA. Great story and look forward to reading another book by this author.

Even though this book is very similar to Perfectly Tragic By Alex Grayson https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/sho..., I really liked it despite hero being an ass to the heroine and in general in his thinking.
This one had less of an angst but very similar.

Brodie Walton gave up on love and happiness when his fiance' was senselessly murdered. To find a way to keep going he dedicates his life to saving others by becoming a first responder. He feels that he is making progress until the day he meets his new partner.

Shane Wilder has gone through her own emotional hurt after a divorce from an unfaithful husband. After suffering from the verbally abusive and hurtful things said to her from her unfaithful husband, Shane has no desire to become involved with any man. Then she meets her cantankerous, handsome boss and finds herself attracted to him. She is puzzled why Brody is so hostile towards her until she learns of his loss.

This is a relationship filled with hurt, guilt and feelings of deserving to be loved.

I was given a copy of this book by the author for an honest review. Like any other Sable Hunter book this was amazing. I loved how Characters from the Hell Yeah Series and A Texas Heroes Series are in this book. You don't have to read this in any particular order, but if I were you I would read both series before reading this. I haven't read any of the Texas heroes series, and I was kinda lost on the characters. After reading this book I will definitely be reading The rest of A Texas Heroes Series. Sable Hunter never seems to disappoint.

Brodie will have you wanting to cry for him, then punch him, hug him, and then kick him to the ground. Brodie lost the love of his life the day he proposed. She was murdered. He concentrated on getting sn EMT program going and quit living as a man otherwise. This was until he meets Shane.
Shane has taken this job to start her life over. She is immediately attracted to Brodie even thougg he is so cruel to her. He can't stay away even if he feels he is betraying Mary. Have to read to find out what happens!!!! This will awaken every emotion you have!!

Boo!
The hero being awful to the heroine because he's grieving trope can be done so well! But this was not one of those times. Weak heroine that allows him to touch her after establishing what seemed like strong boundaries. Hero regretful but it never occurs to him to tell her he loves her until he's dragging her off to get married is ridiculous. And his sister had no business telling her he'd never love her like he did his first love. Heroine needed to stay strong and make him actually work for it.

Working EMTs work close on their shifts, and they tend to become fast friends off the job. But, this not the case
with Brottie and his new partner. He was still grieving his lost of Mary is long time grildfriend. She was killed in
a shooter at her job the day he had given her an engagement ring. It is a good book but, just take time to enjoy
the in and outs of it.It is sad, then happy back to sad and then the great ending.

Emotional read

Brodie was a broken mean man determine to only love the one he lost. Shane a tomboy who was hurt and betrayed by a a as whole of a husband. Their worlds collide and the emotional rollercoaster that each oage takes you on will rip your heart out. All she wants us to be wanted and lovef. The characters has the tendencies to miss you off. I really enjoy this series so much. Can't wait to read more

A lost love.

Mary was the love of his life but she was killed by a sniper. Shane hit Brodie like a ton of bricks or was it LUST? Would love happen for them or would his love for Mary s always hold his heart. Sable has done it again! What a great erotic love story. She even brought in Aunt Bess and the McCoys. Yeah you'll enjoy this one.

Not So Much Broke My Heart As Ticked Me Off

The male main character is ridiculously, over-the-top, jerky and downright mean to the main woman character, who proceeds to enact every stereotype of a sad divorcée. She is a doormat for long stretches, and relapses more often than he deserves.

That said, watching "the grovel" is satisfying, as are the well-distributed steamy scenes.

How does Sable Hunter do it time after time after time?

Sable Hunter's books always put me on the same emotional rollercoaster the characters are on. I love her writing more than most authors because her books are longer and are usually stand-alones. She is incredible!

3🍭🍭🍭

The heroine had no spine but ok. I imagined. The hero didn’t grovel much, so I didn’t love that.

The story was good, but many lines were terribly cheesy. I laughed because of it, but that’s the thing: it was a comedy more than a touching story. And the topic is touching 🤷🏻‍♀️

Another h with BBS. Brodie treated her like shit - insulted her and ridiculed her. After she confided in him about her marriage, he used the information that she shared with him to hurt her. She STILL couldn't wait to sleep with him. 🙄

"Because I Said So" (TEXAS HEROES/HELL YEAH! CROSSOVER) by Sable Hunter is a fantastic read. I loved this story! Brodie and Shane's story is packed full of action, overcoming tragedy, passion, new beginnings, first responders, close friends, and more. This is an excellent addition to the Texas Heroes and Hell Yeah! series. Sable Hunter has written another wonderful story. Highly recommend to all fans of romance, and series.

I love an emotional read and Because I Said So definitely provided, though one emotion I wasn't expecting was the anger I felt toward Brodie. Brodie lost his fiance when she was killed in a mass shooting, and since then he's shut off his heart to love. While he helps his community as a first responder, which to me is a job you do with your heart, he doesn't open his up to love for fear of being hurt again. When Shane comes into his life, his heart battles to win over his brain and in the process he's the one causing the hurt. Shane doesn't give up on him because she sees in him something that is worth loving.

If you are looking for a story with ALL the feels, Because I Said So is a must read!!!

Sable Hunter never lets me down, I always know that her books will keep me entertained and flipping pages. This one was no exception, although I don't think that I have ever hated a hero in one of her books as much as I hated Brodie Walton. Yeah, I understand that he had good reason to be angry, and yes he had every reason to be mad at the world, but dang did he have to be such a gigantic jerk to Shane Wilder, gosh it's not like she had anything to do with the the death of his fiance, Mary. One minute I loved him and the next I wanted to strangle him. After divorcing her sorry excuse for a husband Shane gets a new job and hopefully a new lease on life, that is until she meets her EMT unit partner, and if she thought her ex-husband was hard to deal with, well she ain't seen nothing yet! I highly recommend this book to any romance lover but be ready to get angry, down right mad, laugh, and cry over the antics of these two. Seriously, Sable Hunter makes you go through a bunch of emotions, but in the end I was swooning over Brodie!!
It was a pleasure to meet Aunt Bess, and get a glimpse of some of the McCoys, as well as some of the characters from the Texas Heroes series!!
Be sure to read this one, not because I said so but because you will be missing a good one if you don't!!

Bitter and Sweet and Hawt

This was an AMAZING gathering of multiple characters from different series even the Omega Team Crossover! It was very well done without being overwhelming of the Couple in this story.

Brodie had a shattered soul. Shane was a miracle glue he didnt want to need. Shane battled her own troubles and insecurities whilst battling against Brodies just for being around. That was so rough.

I wanted to shake them both senseless and then hug 'em at different times, which how I knew how emotionally invested I became in their love story.

I enjoy Sable Hunter's work so much for the real places and bits of history she weaves to give you a sense of existence to the story as a whole! So many places in the story I have been myself! It was nostalgic, comforting, and exciting to feel as if you were a part of the story too! Well done! Must read ♡
