In 1928 Josef Hoffmann described the Wiener Werkstdtte, a group of studios and workshops which he had founded 25 years previously with Koloman Moser and Fritz Waerndorfer, as ""The Wiener Werkstdtte, established in 1903, is an enterprise for the active promotion and cultivation of all endeavours in the pursuit of art and quality in modern crafts.""
For thirty years, a group of highly qualified architects and craftsmen succeeded in realizing their dream of fusing architecture and interior design into a Gesamtkunstwerk - a ""total work of art."" The Wiener Werkstdtte combined fine and applied arts to convey a whole new outlook on life, liberated from the strictures of historicism and superfluous ornamentation. The buildings and objects that resulted combine classical elegance with streamlined functionality.
No everyday object was too banal, no architectural task too complex for the artists of the Wiener Werkstdtte. They experimented with an endless variety of materials, from gold and precious stones to papier mbchi and glass beads, and their work still bears lasting witness to a unique and vital artistic movement. Even today, architects and designers continue to cite in their work the innovations and ideas of Josef Hoffmann and the Wiener Werkstdtte.

Fundado en 1903 este taller colaborativo rompió paradigmas creando las bases para el diseño contemporáneo, adelantado a su tiempo estableció una clara visión de la “obra de arte total” y rompió las barreras entre el arte, la arquitectura y la naciente disciplina del diseño.
Viena fue, junto con Glasgow, Bruselas y Paris la punta de lanza de las vanguardias de principios del Siglo XX entorno a las artes creativas y en especial al diseño y la arquitectura. En un momento de ebullición, donde origen numerosas tendencias y movimientos dieron pie a sismas importantes en la cultura occidental, Viena propuso nuevos acercamientos a nuevos retos.
Fundada por Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser y Fritz Waermdorfer ésta iniciativa, que pronto reunió a un importante grupo de artesanos y creativos, marcó el paso por 30 años. Lo que empezó en tres pequeñas habitaciones se convirtió en un edificio de tres pisos con talleres específicos para metales, carpintería y hasta una imprenta. Con puntos de venta a lo largo y ancho de Europa e inclusive uno en Nueva York esta firma impuso un estilo y marcó fuertemente una tendencia.
Este libro es ya un clásico, originalmente editado en 1995 se ha convertido en la referencia más presente sobre el WW. Reditado en varias ocasiones esta última edición de 2015 es fiel a la primera. El nivel de documentación, tal vez sobra decirlo, es extraordinario y las referencias impecables. El entendimiento de este movimiento es pieza clave en el análisis de las vanguardias europeas del Siglo XX y tiene ligas inmediatas a grandes actores de la arquitectura y el diseño como lo entendemos hoy en día.

I read this mainly for its chapter on Purkersdorf Sanatorium, but also for 'local color' vis-a-vis Vienna in the Secession era. The photos are beautiful and the narration helpful. You travel back in time to inhabit a particular time and place.
