“Having botched an attempt to steal money from one of Northern Ireland’s most notorious UVF gangs. Detective Billy Savage is forced to fight for his life as he battles Paramilitaries and avoids his own Police authorities. The murder of his friend and mentor sends Billy into a spiral of violence and betrayal, pushing him to the very limits of his endurance. He must try to save the drug dealer he stole from to clear his name. Then win back the heart of the woman he loves, from a man who wants him locked up.”
Ok, So.. at first initial glance, I thought that this book might be based on or about the IRA. While they are mentioned in this book & I want to say series as a whole, as there is 3 books total, I’m pretty sure that isn’t what it’s based solely on. From what I could gather & retain is that the main character is a man named Billy Savage, a drunkard, single, loathsome human being. I am not sure if he was a former cop who was disgraced & booted off the force, or what. In either case, Billy tends to run in some dodgy circles & perhaps an informer for the local PD. Anyways, it’s a good book all in all, even though it felt like it took a bit of time to kind of build up some steam to read thru a few chapters here, a few chapters there, etc. I’m hoping that book 2 which I believe is called The Celt, things might make a little more sense.
Savage is the name of the main character, not a descriptor of the content. Engrossing and multi-threaded plot that pits a Belfast Police officer against drug dealers, religious/political terrorists, and his own peers. Gritty; lots of action, bloody encounters, and some rough language. The good news is that Andrew Jackson had more stories to tell about his protagonist (i.e. The Celt, which I have already purchased). If you enjoy this one, check out Andrew Barrett and Will Patching, for nail-biting police action in the UK.
Good exciting read if a somewhat violent one. Belfast is fertile ground for rogue police and Billy Savage is up among the best of the best of them. As a matter of fact I am somewhat amazed that in the second book of the series he is still in the police. Looking forward to the next one.
I found this book hard to put down, it's full of suspense and had me hooked on every page until the end. I found the characters well developed and at times endearing. This isn't the genre of book I would normally read but I want more!
A fast paced thriller that's hard to put down. Lots of mystery, suspense, crime, secrets, action and drama. The location of Belfast has many interesting places to carry out the action of this book. As an American, I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the sequel. I received a free copy in a promotion and voluntarily chose to review it.
