This is my first book by this writer and when I realized it was only 195 pages (something longer than a novella but not as long as a decent novel length), I was a bit disappointed; however, it surprisingly made me happy :)
This book is a light read, one you can use as a nice pastime. It's hot and fun. I liked both characters.
We have a couple who are so very anti-relationship. They are so scared of commitment that they sign a contract with rules avoiding all the problems that arise in a relationship. They will just have dinner, go to movies, have sex and fun etc. No long emotional telephone conversations, no flowers or gifts, no romancing and definitely no falling in love.
They are so anti-relationship and blind that they are the last two people who realize that they are in a perfect relationship, indeed! Their friends, his sister etc all realize they have fallen in love but they stay in denial for a long time!
Of course, there are good reasons as to why they are the way they are. Emily was brought up by a mother who said relationships suck and never last so men are just for short fun. This is what she taught her daughter. She had countless men coming and going out of her life. While Emily needed a dad, her mother never gave her one, saying she didn't need one. Whenever a guy she dated fell for her, her mother left them, saying she didn't want a serious relationship. She said love would make a woman weak. Therefore, Emily believes that relationships are for suckers.
Jackson's mother is on the verge of divorcing her 4th husband and his father is divorcing his 5th wife, so Jackson rightfully hates marriage and relationships, believing that they are doomed to fail eventually!
So, when Emily and Jackson realize they have killer chemistry and mutual understanding of what a relationship should be like (i.e. devoid of emotions), they start a companionship agreement, which slowly turns into a perfect relationship - until they have to face their feelings. Both have different reactions to their feelings when they realize they love each other and there is a short separation, during which they both stay celibate.
The book is safe with no cheating. We have no OW drama. At the beginning of the book, the heroine, Emily goes on a few dates with guys and she has a sex scene with another guy but after they start this companionship with a signed contract, there is no one else for either of them.
I also appreciated that the writer stressed the importance of safe sex and made them provide each other with a health report, showing they are healthy with no diseases when they decided not to use condoms. Kudos to her for that!
All in all, I enjoyed myself reading this book. It is no epic romance, it is a simple light read but nowadays it is so hard even to find a decent light read that doesn't get on my nerves and this book did the job. It gave me a few hours of a nice time. I am sure I will forget about it soon but it served its purpose. It took my mind away from the daily stress and while I am healing at home from bruised ribs, it felt like a good pain killer :)))
Recommended only when you need a simple light book - maybe when you are commuting on the train, bus or sth or when you are waiting for your appointment somewhere and you want to kill some time!
