Part Three of the New Three-Part Godmothers Serial!
The best of friends, Toots, Ida, Mavis, and Sophie have been there for each other through thick and thin. Now Sophie needs the rest of the Godmothers to help her through something they’ve never faced before . . . Each of the Godmothers—Toots, Ida, Sophie, and Mavis—brings her own unique strengths to their extraordinary friendship. In particular, Sophie’s psychic gift has helped rescue the Godmothers from a few tight spots. But her abilities can spark trouble too. And on the eve of her first wedding anniversary, Sophie begins experiencing some very strange events in the house she shares with her beloved husband, Goebel.
As the Godmothers rally around Sophie, and Toots’ daughter Abby puts her investigative skills to work trying to ferret out the truth, one of their own is targeted by an unseen enemy. The only option is to confront a terrible wrong that occurred within the house decades ago. And, just maybe, each of them will get the chance to claim a sweet, surprising future chiming with wedding bells when the task is done . . .
Fern Michaels isn’t a person. I’m not sure she’s an entity either since an entity is something with separate existence. Fern Michaels® is what I DO. Me, Mary Ruth Kuczkir. Growing up in Hastings, Pennsylvania, I was called Ruth. I became Mary when I entered the business world where first names were the order of the day. To this day, family and friends call me Dink, a name my father gave me when I was born because according to him I was ‘a dinky little thing’ weighing in at four and a half pounds. However, I answer to Fern since people are more comfortable with a name they can pronounce.
As they say, the past is prologue. I grew up, got a job, got married, had five kids. When my youngest went off to Kindergarten, my husband told me to get off my ass and get a job. Those were his exact words. I didn’t know how to do anything except be a wife and mother. I was also a voracious reader having cut my teeth on The Bobbsey Twins, Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Cherry Ames and the like. The library was a magical place for me. It still is to this day. Rather than face the outside world with no skills, I decided to write a book. For some reason that didn’t intimidate me. As my husband said at the time, stupid is as stupid does. Guess what, I don’t have that husband any more. Guess what else! I wrote 99 books, most of them New York Times Best Sellers.
Moving right along here . . . Several years ago I left Ballantine Books, parted company with my agent, sold my house in New Jersey that I had lived in all my married life and in 1993 moved to South Carolina. I figured if I was going to go through trauma let it be all at one time. It was a breeze. The kids were all on their own at that point. The dump was a 300 year old plantation house that is listed in the National Registry that I remodeled. Today it is beyond belief as are the gardens and the equally old Angel Oaks that drip Spanish moss. Unfortunately, I could not get my ghost to relocate. This ghost has been documented by previous owners. Mary Margaret as we call her, is “a friendly”. She is also mischievous. It took me two weeks to figure out that she didn’t like my coffee cups. They would slide off the table or counter or else they’d break in the dishwasher. I bought red checkered ones. All are intact as of this writing. She moves pillows from one room to the other and she stops all the clocks in the house at 9:10 in the a.m. at least once a week. When the Azaleas are in bloom, and only then, I find blooms on my night stand. I have this glorious front porch and during the warm months I see my swing moving early in the morning when the air is still and again late in the day. She doesn’t spook the dogs. I always know when she’s around because the five of them line up and look like they’re at a tennis match. As of this writing we’re co-habiting nicely.
Most writers love what they do and I’m no exception. I love it when I get a germ of an idea and get it down on paper. I love breathing life into my characters. I love writing about women who persevere and prevail because that’s what I had to do to get to this point in time. It’s another way of saying it doesn’t matter where you’ve been, what matters is where you’re going and how you get there. The day I finally prevailed was the day I was inducted into the New Jersey Literary Hall of Fame. For me it was an awesome day and there are no words to describe it. I’ve been telling stories and scribbling for 37 years. I hope I can continue for another 37 years. It wasn’t easy during some of those years. As I said, I had to persevere. My old Polish grandmother said something to me when I was little that I never forgot. She said when God is good to you, you have to give back. For a while I didn’t know how to do that. When I finally figured it out I set up The Fern Michaels® Foundation.
The spirits in Sophie’s house are still restless, but now with her friends on alert and on hand to help, the resident spirits may just be given their walking papers. The ladies join for a séance to ferret out the last of the items needed, but must head out to find some answers to dispel a ghost that is pestering Ida. They return from their venture to Charlotte poised to rid the spirits, allow Sophie her anniversary celebration and the wedding of Bernice and Robert that Toots is planning.
While the clues and solutions aren’t particularly novel, the story takes the path of the others to detail the journey the women made: both in solving this new mystery and the path that was taken to form this tightly knit and supportive group. Moments range from laugh-out-loud outrageous and funny to poignant remembrances of times past, coming together and their growing friendships.
Perfectly fitting for a summer read, the three installments should be read in order to get the best experience, as well as a wonderful refresher for fans of the Godmothers stories, with information and background that may refresh your connection to the ladies and their journeys. Classic Fern Michaels, the story reads quickly, is engaging and intriguing and the perfect getaway from the daily life stresses.
I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility
Serial in 3 Parts - Overall (combined) review - 4 stars
This was heck of an adventure for the ladies. They take a last minute trip to Charlotte to get answers on a mean ghost that has possessed Ida and they woman ghost that keeps needing something from Sophie.
They find what they need and return to solve the situation, but it's an interesting story about all this all played out.
When they return Goebel has surprised Sophie yet again and their year anniversary was exciting in a way they never expected it to be.
Bernice and Robert are getting married in the garden at Toots house and Toots is planning the wedding. Toots gets another surprise that will throw her for a loop and then more are revealed as the time passes.
All in all another adventure for the ladies and one that pulls them closer, again, as friends.
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The conclusion of this three-part novel really took an interesting twist. And since I'm a sucker for happy endings, this did not disappoint. 5 out of 10
This third part in 2 serial shorts was a bit of a let down. First, make sure you read all 3 in order to get the story. the first 2 gave some nice build up but this one just kind of fell flat and the resolution felt almost forced, too quick and easy.
I'm still a fan and can't wait for more because I do like the characters. I just hope she puts a nice novel or even novella length together for the next one!
Meh. I usually love Fern Michael's series but this last three part novella left me feeling like I missed something. And that something was depth. Felt like it was written fast and seemed more like a draft that needed more substance. Sigh.
The Godmothers: Getaway is a part of a bigger series The Godmothers and it would be best if you have read the previous books, but not essential, it can also be stand alone book.
So this short story is about four friends, who have known each other a long time, who live close by and are very close. It's in a way paranormal story since one of the godmothers has special powers to communicate with souls and somehow she has awaken an soul in a old house and this soul has taken over her friend. To make the soul leave they have to figure out who it is and why is he/she still here.
In the end everything is fine and they all celebrate their happily ever after together :).
An good Fern Michaels story, I just wish I had known the previous stories too.
Why on earth was it necessary to split this story into 3 books? That just seems to me like a marketing ploy to make it appear that more books are being published and sold and from what I have been reading in the reviews this strategy seems to have upset a lot of readers. That said, I enjoyed the story, but it definitely would have been better as a single book and not published in installments. Loved the very amusing characters and the way they and their male partners supported each other and banded together to solve the mystery. This book had a rather beautiful surprise ending.
Chapter three of this trilogy brought the story to such a fun conclusion and a twist I sure did not see coming. Look forward to more Godmother books with this ever expanding cast of fun, quirky, and amazing characters.
In this third and final installment, the Godmothers hold a séance, but the spirit does not cooperate. They go to see Margaret Dabney and learn the story of her parents and their past lives in the old house. Sophie finally knows what she must do to rid her home of the spirits and there is a very happy ending for all of the Godmothers!
Thanks to the publisher and to NetGalley for an ARC; all opinions are my own.
Title: Getaway- The Godmothers Book 9 Author: Fern Michaels Publisher: Kensington Books Published: 5-23-2017 Pages: 138 Genre: Women's Fiction Sub-Genre: Sagas; Short Reads; Contemporary Fiction; Paranormal ISBN: 9781496712080 ASIN: B01L5KH7PY Reviewed For NetGalley and Kensington Books Reviewer: DelAnne Rating: 4.5 Stars
I was lucky enough to read all three books at one sitting. "Getaway" is the third part of the three parts of the whole book. The cost accumulation equals one full book in the Godmother Series.
Part 1 is "Hideaway" and the second part is "Spirited Away".
The final installment brings the story to its spectacular conclusion.
Sophie and the women set about to repair the wrongs done at her home to bring peace. Abby continues her investigation and the danger comes closer.
Fern Michaels has brought us a story that gives us shivers, laughter and joy. Her talent continues to keep her readers wanting more. I hope to read more of her work soon. My rating of "Getaway" is 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Another great book in this series of the sisterhood by Fern Michaels. This was another great story that had to be read from start to finish at one time with no breaks. The four women in this book all went to school together and then stayed friends for life. Each married and lost husbands only to find others to fill their spots and have a lasting life together. This is my review and mine alone. Norma Gorrill
Getaway is the third part of this book in The Godmothers series written by author Fern Michaels. It would have been more enjoyable as one book. I'm a huge fan of this author, but this was disappointing. Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the advance copy.
What a great ending to the sequel, I knew Sophia would be able to take care of the spirit, I love how the 4 friends are there for each other and that their men understand them so well, I love that they all got married on the same day.
I like the characters portrayed in The Godmothers and each f their quirky traits. The supernatural mystery and its resolution is the heart of the story and the quadruple finale is satisfying.
This installment of The Godmother’s was enjoyable. It took an interesting turn at the end and Sophie’s mystical powers were needed. This is not a stand alone book need to read early volumes so know who everyone is, what is going on and how they got there.
Fern Michaels has done it again. You just can't put the book down. These Godmothers keep you in suspense and giggling at the same time. Thank you so much for such creativity.
Didn't do it for me. Sorry. Gave it three stars because if you are in to ghosts and séances you might see it in a different light. Just not my cup of tea.
So now that I've read all three books what did I think? One, I'm not a fan of novella serials. I personally think as a reader we lose too much of the cohesiveness that a full length novel provides.
Two, I don't enjoy books that have exorcisms in them. It bothers me. I discussed that in the review of book two.
Book three in the serial was such a letdown. I think the story could have went in so many different directions but it went a lackluster and boring direction.
I'm still a fan of Fern Michaels and will continue to read her books. Especially her older novels.
Since all three books in the new godmother series by Fern Michaels relate directly to each other and since all the books are totally intertwined within each other, I am reviewing Hideaway, Spirited Away and Getaway together. None of the three books is particularly long, and each reads rather quickly, making them seem more like one “big” book. In this trilogy, the four friends, Toots, Sophie, Mavis and Ida, join forces to figure out what exactly is happening in Sophia’s new, apparently haunted house. Sophia’s psychic/paranormal abilities help the foursome as they move through a series of strange events, all related to the history of Sophia’s house. This is also a story of the four seniors who have “been there, done that” and are ready to settle down in happily married life once again. One thing I did not understand, however, is why after all the other books in the series, the author chose to provide short snippets of how the four came together as adolescents at a religious school none particularly even wanted to attend. It would seem that this sort of recap/back story would have been better suited for an earlier book in the series, if not the first book, where the four are introduced.
The story, as I said, move along at a nice, steady clip. I am not sure, however, if the way they choose to put the final piece of the puzzle together is the realistic way these sorts of things are done. I am not going to go into this more because I want to avoid spoilers. Naturally, throughout the three books we are introduced (or perhaps re-introduced in some cases) to the men, who now become an integral part of their lives and how the entire crew interacts and works together. In addition, Abby, the once-upon-a-time journalist daughter of Toots and mother of one-year old twins (the apples of their grandmother’s and godmother’s eyes) as well as her husband and twin children also play a solid, though not dominant, role in the book, giving the story a bit of hominess and levity. Nevertheless, I wondered sometimes, as I read, if these were the same characters from the other books and why things between and among Toots and the three godmothers seemed off, not really like the way they were in other books. Possibly, the introduction of men into the lives of these four women is what made things unlike the characters in the other books in the series. They just did not seem, as I said, like they were in the other books. The story reads well and quickly, as I said. The three books are well-written and interesting. I just found the way things were handled a bit off. If you enjoy other books by the author or if you enjoy this series, you will enjoy this one. I am also not sure about stretching the story over three books, as there was a story line and plot, though not much of one. I am not sure having the reader procure three books was a great idea, though it is a bit unique. This is a fast easy read for someone who enjoys curling up with a book, or books in this case, and reading something or things that is/are quick and light. I received this from NetGalley to read and review.
