Diary of a Succubus

I can kill a man with a kiss.

"You're everything I ever wanted," he says. He leans in and kisses me. At last. I slip my hands away, letting my fingertips brush across his cheek. He takes his final bow over the railing and drops 15 floors toward the Fifth Avenue pavement. Pity.

Not all BookShots are created equal. Surely, with a huge cast of collaborative authors, James Patterson’s name will be attributed to numerous genres, which will appeal to different reader bases. While I steer clear of certain genres when perusing BookShots (namely, the ‘flames’ series of romances), on this binge month, I am trying to keep my options open and reading a great deal of Patterson’s collaborative efforts. Derek Nikitas crossed my path in this piece, which seems to have more of a supernatural/fantasy flavour to it. As the story opens, the reader learns that the female protagonist is trying to lure a rich and powerful man back to his home and into bed. However, it soon becomes obvious that both are trying to kill the other. After Mark Norman Harper falls to his death, the hunt is on to find the group who are out to kill this collective of succubi, the undead who have had their souls bartered to the other side. For the rest of this painfully confusing piece, Patterson and Nikitas try to hold the reader’s attention with a cat and mouse game between the succubi and the hunters that seek to banish them once and for all. I admit that I was lost early on and could not find myself as I flailed through the piece. Fantasy and supernatural BookShot lovers, unite. The rest of us will have to see if this pair did any better when they plotted the death of Stephen King in another piece of fiction.

Reading should never be painful, nor should be it a chore that pushes the reader into areas of discomfort. Libraries, bookstores, Goodreads, and the internet are all places where the curious reader can take a plunge into most anything they find to their liking and run with it. Not everything will appeal to every reader. I have to remind myself of that sometimes, particularly when my reviewing can cut a little deep to those who have thin skin. However, Nikitas and Patterson surely have a following and for those people, this piece was surely just what they needed. Odd characters with backstories over three hundred years in the making, with both modern and antiquated perspectives to build solid characters. The story, while a dud for me, surely would have met the interest of those who enjoy supernatural phenomena and spirit haunting. I do, but this was just too odd for me and I could not find any literary handholds to keep me from sliding into an abyss of confusion. I cannot hold my nose and score it high for those who loved it, for it is the honest balance of YAH and NAY that makes a review stronger.

Kudos, Messrs. Patterson and Nikitas, for doing your best with this. I’ll try another of your joint pieces (perhaps the aforementioned King murder) before passing final judgement. This was not my thing and I cannot sugarcoat it, but I am sure some will love it. To them, a hearty, ENJOY!

I really don't understand all the 5 star reviews? If this is a great story what horrid books are you reading.

1.) Short story factor aside there wasn't enough clear world building. Part of the succubus history was fuzzy.

2.) Okay premise. Succubus goes after league of bad incubus men.
Succubus used to have wings and tie back to Lillith of myth.

3.) If you get this book for free on Kindle it's okay. It reads like a hokey magical tv series. (Think a cross between Charmed and Femme Nikita.)

4.) Because it was a James Patterson book my expectations were much higher. This was my first Book Shots book and if this is any indication of the rest I'm not impressed.

Great book

This was a great read. Different. from what I am use to reading. Fast read, hard to put down. I would recommend this book to any James Patterson reader.

I don't understand the polarizing ratings of this book, which usually hints something controversial or esoteric- sometimes a hidden gem in the rough.

But it's not the case with this book. It's an interesting read- short and rather uncomplicated.

It's about a mysterious woman, a witch, a succubus, who has mystical powers. One of those powers is the ability to steal a man's soul from a kiss. It's story of her fight against another clan of mystical beings, the story of her dark past, and the brief romance she has with a mortal named Vincent.

It's an interesting story. Enjoyable for the length of the read. Nothing too spectacular. And not enough world building in my opinion.

So this isn't my usual type of reading, but I was surprised how invested I was in the story. Started listening to it on audiobook (great narrator) while I went for my walk then finished reading while sitting on my back patio on this nice day.
As usual James Patterson chapters are short and to the point and since this is only 128 pages, there is not any unnecessary words added.
A killer with a little witchcraft and magic! Loved it!

No more Book Shots for me.

Unfortunately, another loser for Patterson. Ever since he introduced the Book Shots the quality of writing has gone steadily downhill. There is no depth to his books. As a long time reader , Ifeel cheated by his little quickies. No more Book Shots for me.

Not my cup of tea. I had known that I wouldn't have started it. At least it was short

Strange. Could have benefited by being more than a Bookshot with more explanation.

Three stars for this book is pretty generous, since I'm not sure I actually liked it. I was hoping for something along the lines of THE EXORCIST, but instead I got urban fantasy with a dash of trashy romance. It also feels written with a female audience specifically in mind (i.e. grrl power, hot guys, and designer clothes), thereby alienating me further.
That being said, I consider DIARY OF A SUCCUBUS fine for what it is. If you like Kim Harrison and L.A. Banks, I imagine you'll enjoy this, as well. And though it's not really my style, I was entertained enough to stick with it to the end. This is a new genre for James Patterson, and though there's nothing special about the book to warrant a recommendation, at least it's short enough that you don't mind wasting time on it while doing something like riding the subway or eating alone at Taco Bell.
If that's not damning with faint praise, I don't know what is.

I love James Patterson books but I wasn't in love with this one. I didn't love this supernatural part of this book at all. It's was so fast but when you only have so many pages (under 200)it's hard to make it better. Don't get me wrong, this book was good. It just wasn't the way James Patterson usually writes. When he writes a book I read everything and I devour his books quickly. He just sucks you in. I'm a long time James Patterson fan and this book just wasn't one of his best for me. The girl that buddy read it with me liked it a lot.

This Succubus would steal the souls from men and women that committed crimes and not humans that were innocent. In this book she was going after a leader of a trafficking ring. Young mand women that were being sold off to one man. They were also mules and stored drugs inside of themselves so that dealers could get more drugs on the streets to sale.

This was a mystery/thriller and his writing was great but I wasn't into the supernatural part of the story. If you are then this book is for you.

I read anything that has James Patterson's name attached to it so I'm always giving his co-author's a chance by reading their books. Unfortunately, this one was not that great. Maybe had I read what the book was actually about before starting it, it wouldn't have been so bad but I doubt it. I'm only giving 3 stars because of James Patterson's association and the book didn't have any proofreading errors.

Okay for something to while away the time.

I never really connected with the main character, and it was more an obligation to finish something I started than pure joy that kept me reading. As always, the book was well written and well edited, but the charisma was lacking in the characters. The ending was quite abrupt and disappointing. Saying any more would give too much information. I don't believe that I'll read any more by this co-author.

Excellent read!

Diary of a Succubus by James Patterson and Derek Nikitas is I suppose you would call it a fantasy thriller which I read through my local library.
I hadn't thought I would like it much at first but it became so engrossing that I read it in 1 session. Can't really discuss what captured my interest and attention without spoiling the story but once caught I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Lilith is the olden name for her, a succubus or female demon. She is now using the name of Lilly Anna as she goes after a demon incubus named Diego Mellado. He is thought to be the leader of the secret society Deus Inversus. Once Lilly takes his soul, she learns he is not the leader. The leader is Asmodeus and he is after her.

This was a little way-out for me.

Did James Patterson write this, or was it written by someone else who licensed his name? An awful pile of dreck; I couldn't get past more than the first few chapters. The entire book was a stream of consciousness monologue of an incredibly shallow and unlikable chick with an unlimited arsenal of magical powers to get her past all barriers.
Reading shouldn't be painful, so I put this one down.

Excellent reading

Diary of a Succubus is a will written novella with interesting will developed characters. The story line has lots of twist and turns as the Succubus fights a war against evil. I would recommend this BookShots novella to anyone who is looking for an excellent read. Enjoy reading 2017

I listend to this from the overdrive app from the library.

Not a bad story and moved quickly. Few twists that I didn't realize were leading that way but then boom it was duh what did you expect.

Romantic Suspense - Novella - "You're everything I ever wanted," he says. He leans in and kisses me. At last. I slip my hands away, letting my fingertips brush across his cheek. He takes his final bow over the railing and drops 15 floors toward the Fifth Avenue pavement. Pity.

Great Supernatural Thriller!

This short novel is a great supernatural thriller! Who is hunting the succubus? Will Lily Ann be able to stop him? Or will she be his next victim? Is it the evil drug lord? Read it, and find out. You'll be glad you did!

I used to be a James Patterson fan, and still enjoy the Alex Cross series. I was desperate for an audio book and chose this one because I thought it might be mildly entertaining, but what a disappointment!
