When Jeremy, a tall, hunky, ladies man begins to explore his bisexual attractions, he realizes he loves his best friend and college roommate Roger. Roger secretly loves Jeremy back but is holding on to a secret of his own. A terrible one. On Halloween night both men are invited to a party where the truth of each other will be revealed in a horrific way. Will they survive a night of terror? Or will it rip them apart forever?
Noted author, poet, producer, and all-around badass, F.E. Feeley Jr. is one of the most important queer voices writing today. He lives in the Deep South with his fur babies, campaigning for social justice, and occasionally howling at the moon.
Jeremy is bisexual but not out at the beginning of the story. Roger is gay. They are best friends and have been since they were little. I'm sure you can guess what is going on there. Besides the whole Jeremy not being out of the bisexual closet yet and whatnot, Roger has another secret. One that ends up causing a misunderstanding. Oh and a poltergeist causes havoc.
This short story made my bisexual/queer and Halloween loving heart SO HAPPY.
Only con really is that I wish there was more, and that it was a little more fleshed out.
There are two strands to this story. One is the secrets Jeremy and Roger keep from each other and the other is the paranormal element. However both are interlinked in this short story, with a touch of horror that F.E. Feeley Jr. excels at. I'm not going to reveal Roger's secret, because, hey, spoilers, sweetie, but I am always pleased to see more bisexual characters in the M/M Romance genre, and the uncertainty that comes with acknowledging this, from both men. Well worth reading in the run up to Halloween.
I don’t read (or watch) scary stories as a rule. I’m all for murder and mayhem, but horror… not so much most of the time. This blurb, however, intrigued me so I decided to overcome whatever preconceived reservations I might have and dive in.
The start of the story lulled me into a false sense of security. But the playful banter was soon replaced by the first apparition and the creepiness kicked off. As soon as it did I remembered why I so rarely read creepy stories; they make me feel too much. My stomach churns and I get jittery. It gets too much and I close the book only to open it again two minutes later because I HAVE to know what happens next, except that I don’t want to because NERVES, but I do because I can’t stand the tension of not knowing. LOL. It’s an experience I both love and try to avoid. And the more invested I am in a story the stronger those feelings become.
Yes, I did get quite invested in Between Us. Me, the self-confessed wimp who doesn’t deal well with either angst or tension, fully enjoyed the wonderfully torturous combination of romantic uncertainty and ghostly scariness. In fact, I was really impressed that the romance and ghost storylines in this book are perfectly balanced. All too often I’ve come across books in which one storyline ends up taking precedence at the expense of the other. Not in this book; romance and ghostliness play next to each other and one enhances the other.
I liked Jeremy and Roger, enjoyed the way they interacted, and I loved the premise of the story. While this is a fully formed story without an open ending, I would love to see more of them. And given what Roger’s secret is, and considering that he’s met and recognised Cindy (yes, I'm being vague on purpose), I could well see more spooky adventures for these two men. I would most definitely read them.
This was my first encounter with this author and I can safely say it won’t be my last. Between Us packed a whole lot of story into relatively few pages and did so very well. While I wouldn’t have minded more words, the story didn’t need them. If F.E. Feeley Jr can hook me this much in under fifty pages I can’t wait to find out what’ll happen when I pick up a full length novel.
Overall I highly recommend this book if you'd like to add more ghosts and romance to your Halloween.
Between Us By F.E. Feeley, Jr. October, 2016 Four stars.
Sweet and scary Hallowe’en story. Jeremy and Roger are lifelong friends. Roger has two secrets, Jeremy just one.
Roger sees dead people, and on Hallowe’en he decides he has to tell his best friend Jeremy the truth at last.
Let’s just hope he gets to the party on time.
Feeley’s writing is good, and his characters are rich and engaging. For a short story, this one is well developed and satisfying in its completeness. We never get enough time in this format to delve deeply into any character’s mind, but Feeley gives us enough about Roger and Jeremy that we care what happens to them right off the bat. Feeley’s métier is the ghost story, and his longer books are as much fun to read as this Hallowe’en treat.

One of my partners in crime, Lisa Arbitrary, recommended this novella to me and man do I owe her one back.
What a wonderfully fun, delicious piece of Halloween candy this morsel turned out to be. A great, sweet Halloween treat.
THE CHARACTERS
Roger:
“Jeremy watched as his five-foot-eight, one-hundred-and-ninety-pound best friend got up off the couch and put the Xbox controller back on the stand, and he felt a twinge in his heart.”
Hot, hunky Roger has been best friends with Jeremy since they were kids. Inseparable then and now, they’ve stayed best friends on into college. Except there’s one secret his never told Jeremy. No, not that he’s gay – Jeremy’s known that all along, it’s the fact that Roger’s a medium, a fact here discovered early on that his mother helped him deal with.
Jeremy:
“Unlike Roger, Jeremy was tall. At least six-three and had about fifty pounds on him. Roger was muscular, but Jeremy was no slouch either. They were night and day. Where Roger’s hair was light brown and short, Jeremy’s was pitch black and long. Where Roger was darker skinned and tan, Jeremy was pale. Where Jeremy was boisterous and the life of the party, Roger was more reserved and quiet.”
Jeremy has been Roger’s best friend through thick and thin and he was the first person that Roger told he was gay. No secrets between them, except one: Jeremy’s never told Roger he’s bisexual and that he’s fallen in love with his best friend.
THE STORY
What a fun, deliciously sweet story with just the right amount of angst. Gotta love some angst in my books, it’s like a fine spice.
Roger and Jeremy have been best friends their whole lives, sharing everything with each other. Well, almost everything. Roger’s never told Jeremy he’s a medium as he was taught to suppress this part of himself, and Jeremy’s never told Roger that he’s bisexual, much less that he’s fallen in love with his hunky best friend.
Now in college the two of them are roommates and come Halloween Jeremy’s ready to party. Halloween has always been a nightmare for Roger as the spirits are at their peak during Halloween, making for not such a fun time. To top it all off this is the time Jeremy picks to tell Roger that he’s bisexual and interested in dating Roger.
For 48 pages, this short novella delivers a great read just in time for Halloween!
THE WRITING
This is really good writing. In order to deliver the way this story did in 48 pages, you know it’s good writing. Every character is adequately and effectively developed for the story. The backstory of Roger and his mom is well done and the douchey frat boys are just right, not overdone, which could easily have happened, and the story ends just right.
I think I’ve found a new writer to follow!
I would like to thank F.E. Feeley, Jr. with providing me with a copy of his book in exchange for my honest opinion.
5 ***** Stars Halloween Short: Between Us Author: FE Feeley Jr Publisher: Amazon Services Genre: Halloween Spooky Horror Rated: Mature
It was such a surprise today to see on Amazon a Surprise Short Story by Fred Feeley. Mr. Feeley is one of my go-to authors for my horror fixes. Seeing this I jumped at getting a Holiday scare and as I expected the author delivered!
Jeremy and Roger are childhood friends. Roger is gay. It is Halloween Eve and Jeremy is dressing for a party with a friend Jenna doing his vampire makeup. Roger has refused their invitation to go to this Halloween Party. Jeremy makes mention “how Roger gets” this time of year.
The story as I said is a short, but it doesn’t leave the spook factor lacking in any way. With all of the information we digested in this 40 page quickie, Mr Feeley has opened up so many more possibilities for Jeremy and Roger….I am thinking we should see them again!
I can suggest Haunting of Timber Manor or Objects in the Rear View Mirror next!

Wow. This is really a horror story wrapped up in a love story. Be very careful what you try to summon, especially on Halloween. Between Us scared me half to death. Let me warn you not to read this when you are alone on a dark night. But, as with most romance, love conquers all and since this is in its final form, a romance, there is supposed to be an HEA, right? Bwahahahaha! Read at your own risk.
This was a short story between two best friends, Jeremy and Roger. Jeremy discovered that he was bisexual and he realized he was in love with his best friend, Roger. Roger is dealing with the fact that he could see dead people and he thinks that his best friend, who he's also in love with, is planning on getting married. This isn't really a romance. More of a mild horror book with romantic elements and a comedy of errors.
WOW.. This was a first time read for the author and I loved it. Brilliantly written, as huge drama and action scenes played out. Whats a Halloween night without a few ghost..understatement. A short horror with a touch of romance I'll be reading more from this author. Jeremy is all excited about Halloween, his best friend, Roger not so much. Jeremy was a ladies man were as Roger was gay and gamer but also hiding a secret. Roger sees ghosts and keeping it from Jeremy it was hurting him. That's until they both attend a huge party.
Paranormal short story that had everything a short story should have. It grabbed my attention. I loved the MCs. It was well written. Need more of these two guys.
