Waiting
Alex is a debuting musician and dreams to become a rockstar. Emily is a homeless that lives on London's streets. Alex is an alcohol and sex addict. Emily is a drug addict that can't get rid of Oxicondon. The two of them live so different lives that they seem to come from different planets; the only thing that they have in common is the square where they first met in a cold night in London.
In the beginning Emily doesn't want to have Alex around. She finds him irritating and she is very distrustful; the boy, on the other hand, is almost obsessed trying to help her and he trusts her completely. Alex needs all his patience and stubbornness to convince her to trust him because living on the streets made her suspicious.
Alex shifts between night where he is drunk and days where he tries to help Emily. His behavior jeopardizes his relationship with his bandmates and friends. They are excited because they are negotiating a management deal but their success is related to Alex capacity to write two new songs, something that Alex can't do because of his writer's block.
Alex needs a harsh wake up call to rouse from the numbness that is deep in him since he left his family. He will be forced to deal with his past, his demons and the emotions that he buried under loads of alcohol. He will have to face the reality and grow up, putting aside his painful past and helping someone that needs him the most, Emily.
He is ripped apart between his friends that need those lyrics and Emily that need his help. He finds himself in the position he has to choose and everything seems painful and wrong. In the end, those choices make him understand what is really important to him and everything starts to fall in the right place.
Waiting is a story about pain, self-destruction and rebirth that link two persons apparently frail and different that can find a way, together, to save themselves.

I don't know where to start my review of this book! It is the first time i have read this authors work and i have to say i fell into her book. The emotions she writes with had me engaged by the end of the first chapter. It is a story about love finding it's way between two people that have been trampled on by life. They both have addictions to help them cope with the things that have happened to them . I can't say anything else without ruining the book so if you are looking for a tear jerker then get your box of tissues ,a comfortable chair, and settle down to read this!! In my humble opinion it is a great read!

Alla fine di Resta con me l’autrice ha specificato che ad un certo punto Joshua legge un pezzo di un romanzo che è ispirato a Philip e a una sua canzone; il romanzo in questione esiste ed è proprio Waiting. Se leggete la London Series di Erika Vanzin non siete obbligati a leggere Waiting, essendo un romanzo autoconclusivo e avendo dei protagonisti diversi. Diciamo che è un plus che vi permetterà di capire meglio il protagonista maschile, Philip, di Resta con me (e del terzo libro che leggerò a breve).
Dopo queste premesse mi sembra doveroso concentrarmi su Waiting.
I protagonisti di questo New Adult Romance sono Alex e Emily; il primo è un cantautore di ventisei anni che fatica a trovare i soldi per mangiare e che spende quel poco che ottiene cantando acquistando alcool, mentre Emily è una diciottenne, scappata di casa da tre anni a causa di un patrigno che la picchiava e che abusava di lei, dipendente dall’ossicodone.
Avevo aspettative molto alte su Waiting perché Resta con me mi era piaciuto moltissimo, ma in questo caso il libro mi ha colpito molto bene.
Fin da subito ho avuto paura di leggere un libro quasi trash, non per la trama, interessante per il passato e il presente problematico dei due ragazzi, ma perché Alex fin nelle prime righe ha rappresentato il tipico personaggio maschile dei romanzi rosa, il solito cliché che non digerisco:
«Non importava che da loro volesse solo sesso, che non volesse nessun tipo di relazione, era talmente affascinante nel suo modo di fare da cattivo ragazzo che le donne facevano la fila per lui. […] Tutte volevano essere la donna che avrebbe redento il cattivo ragazzo, che avrebbe aggiustato il suo cuore andato in pezzi senza però rendersi conto che, passare dal suo letto, non era il modo per raggiungere quel cuore.»
Fortunatamente a parte questo scivolone Erika Vanzin ha recuperato, facendoci capire subito che Alex ha dei problemi, risente di forti mancanze e perdite, e tra le righe non solo ci accorgeremo della sua sofferenza, ma anche della sua bontà.
La sua somiglianza con Philip è molto grande tanto che in un passaggio ero convinta che Emily avesse adocchiato proprio Philip, ma sono poi stata smentita dall’autrice che specifica, poche righe più avanti, che quel ragazzo sullo skate è proprio Alex.
«Passò accanto allo skatepark spesso affollato di turisti curiosi che osservavano i ragazzi provare i loro trick. Quel pomeriggio non c’era però quasi nessuno perché un solo ragazzo sfidava il freddo sulla sua tavola per provare e riprovare lo stesso identico gioco con lo skate. Biondo, capellino nero piantato fin sugli occhi, giacca di pelle nera, pantaloni dello stesso colore strappati e cuffie sulle orecchie. Non riusciva a vederlo negli occhi ma dal modo di fare sembrava arrabbiato, andava su e giù per quelle rampe di cemento come un leone in gabbia, provò quasi pietà per lui.»
Ho come la sensazione, rileggendo la frase per la terza volta, di aver letto questo stesso identico pezzo proprio su Resta con me. Di sicuro l’autrice ha reso molto bene l’idea della somiglianza tra i due ragazzi.
Emily è una protagonista decisamente intrigante, per il suo passato e il suo presente. È stato interessante sapere della sua storia di abusi e violenze, del suo vivere da barbona nei parchi e nelle strade, della sua dipendenza da ossicodone e del suo percorso di disintossicazione.
L’aspetto che non mi ha convinto di Waiting è stata proprio la storia d’amore tra i due ragazzi, lasciata quasi sullo sfondo. Mi è infatti sembrato che sia stata data molta più importanza ai loro percorsi, alla loro crescita personale, alle loro dipendenze. Waiting non è un cattivo romanzo, assolutamente, semplicemente mi aspettavo fosse più incentrato sulla storia d’amore tra Alex e Emily, mi aspettavo che anche da questo punto di vista fosse più simile a Resta con me.
Erika Vanzin scrive bene, il suo è uno stile fresco e giovanile, anche se devo dire che in questo romanzo c’erano più refusi rispetto a Resta con me, niente di esagerato e fastidioso per la lettura, ma una revisione non ci starebbe male.
Waiting è comunque un libro che può piacere agli amanti dei romance; potete leggerlo come intermezzo della London Series oppure come un libro a parte, essendo un autoconclusivo. A voi la scelta.

Emily e Alex: due vite diverse ma simili nel profondo. Due storie difficili, dolorose, infelici. Emily, testarda e piena di forza, cerca di sopravvivere in un mondo difficile. Ho letto altri libri di Erika e questo non mi aveva mai ispirato e non so perché... ma mi sono ricreduta perché la storia mi ha coinvolto molto.
I temi trattati sono molto delicati ma la voglia di rivincita verso questa vita che con i protagonisti non è stata facile ha regalato una speranza: la speranza e la voglia di riuscire a farcela.

Five poignant stars! A tale with all the feels…
My attention was absolutely captured when I read the sinopsis of this book and I was glad to discover that I was not wrong to choose to read it completely. It’s the first time I read a book of this author and here are my honest thoughts about Waiting.
This book has a mix of feelings that made you feel them in your own skin. The main characters are so damaged. They could be quite self-destructive and personally make you think of all the people who have a hard life as being addicts, homeless, alcoholic etc. It's really touching.
On one hand we have Alex. He wants to become a rock star. He has addictions that help him to cope with his life. He has a past which made him feel guilty. Alcohol and girls are his only escape until he met Emily.
On the other hand we have Emily. She had a bad past which made her abandon her home when she was a defendless teenager. She is a drug addict who lives on London’s streets, a damage angel who will save Alex. People around her only abuse her and oxicondon is her only way to avoid the cruel reality that she lives. She has trouble trusting other or to accept any kind of help because she only knew badness. This is the reason why she does not accept Alex’s help so easily.
Emily & Alex are two broken souls who will find their way together. Both will heal their wounds together. I truly recommend you this book. It’s filled with a lot of feelings. I like the way the author described the human emotions. Erika has a new fan. As I’m learning Italian I hope I could read the Italian Edition of this book soon.

Waiting is a story about love finding its way between two broken hearts crushed by life and fate. It was a touching journey of reality with a strong message for readers. The plot is original and the characters were complex and very human.
Erika Vanzin approached very sensitive topics with delicacy, such as drug addiction, violence and abandonment. She also poured true love in the pages of this book.

A parer mio Erika ha fatto un lavoro davvero eccellente nello sviluppo di un tema tanto sfruttato come il romance. Ha saputo dargli una sfumatura diversa e assolutamente insolita, e l'ha fatto alla grande. Do 5 stelline - il massimo - proprio per l'originalità con cui ha affrontato il tema amoroso, affiancandolo ad una miriade di altre devastanti sfaccettature che non avevo mai avuto occasione di leggere accostate ad esso.
Ciò che mi ha colpito particolarmente è stata l'ambientazione. Il romanzo è ambientato in una Londra fredda, distaccata, una città totalmente diversa dal mio immaginario. A tratti è stato davvero devastante, ma ogni capitolo mi rapiva talmente tanto da lasciarmi incapace di smettere di leggere (ecco perché l'ho divorato in poco meno di due giorni). Con Alex ed Emily ho riso, pianto, li ho amati, a volte odiati per la loro capacità innata di farsi del male, ma soprattutto insieme a loro ho riflettuto e ho capito che la vita è piena di sfaccettature, e non esiste solo il buono, il cattivo, il drogato o l'alcolizzato; ognuno di noi è molto più che ridotto ad una singola categoria, e prima inizieremo a rendercene conto, prima ci accetteremo per quello che siamo e impareremo a crescere, migliorare, amare.
Fatevi travolgere anche voi dalle mille emozioni descritte egregiamente da Erika Vanzin.

After reading the blurb I knew I had to read this book. Emily and Alex's issues are something I'm too familiar with. They have both been through a lot in their life. They both just needed someone to love them unconditionally. Something that they didn't have. I'm happy they found that in each other. I'm happy that Emily was able to overcome her addiction and he was there to help her. I love
The fact that he was always there for her even in the bad times. To me that's true love. I love how the author created

The only thing that was confusing at times is when the character point of view went from Alex to Emily. I found myself going back and having to figure out who's point

Thoroughly enjoyed this riveting story, about the power of addiction, and the places it can take us, if we get lost. This one plucked the heart strings a little.

Un libro che parla di due anime spezzate, di demoni interiori
e di come si può risorgere dalle proprie ceneri.
Con una scrittura in terza persona, attraverso la quale ci confrontiamo con due punti di vista differenti: quello di Emily e quello di Alex; che a volte diventano tre, con quello di Matt, Erika Vanzin ci fa immergere in una storia dall'atmosfera triste, in una Londra che al contrario non lo è per niente.
Con un ritmo cadenzato ed uno stile di scrittura davvero scorrevole, l'autrice ci mostra la vita difficile di due anime spezzate, quella di Emily, una ragazza che decide di vivere per strada pur di scappare da una casa in cui abusi e sofferenza erano all'ordine del giorno e che si ritrova dipendente dalla droga per sfuggire ai suoi
demoni interiori; e quella di Alex, un musicista affoga il dolore della perdita e della solitudine nell'alcool.
I due personaggi sono ben caratterizzati, trascinano i lettori nel loro oblio, nel loro dolore e nella propria paura.
Leggendo non si può fare a meno di intenerirsi di fronte la storia di Emily e, avendone scoperto il passato, anche di Alex. Quest'ultimo però ammetto di averlo preso un po' in antipatia all'inizio.
La trama è ben strutturata, non ci sono buchi che facciano sentire i lettori spaesati ed è abbastanza coerente come linearità di contenuti.
E' pressoché incentrata sui personaggi e sul loro disagio psico-fisico, andandone ad evidenziare i turbamenti e le paure ma anche tutto ciò che i traumi provocano nel subconscio.
In questo libro vengono trattati argomenti davvero importanti, per nulla semplici da trattare, e sono anche messi in rilevanza rispetto al resto della storia: la violenza domestica e quella su minore, la dipendenza da droga e alcool e la condizione del vivere per strada.
Tutti questi aspetti la rendono una storia molto coinvolgente e verosimile, nonostante la costruzione della love story tra i due protagonisti lo sia un po' meno.
Perché? Be' perché la natura dei personaggi va un po' in contrasto con il repentino trasporto emotivo che provano l'uno nei confronti dell'altro, soprattutto quello da parte di Alex.
C'è anche da dire però che questo potrebbe essere dovuto anche al suo passato e al suo bisogno inconscio di salvare qualcuno, collegato al trauma subìto.
Per il resto è una storia che attira chi la legge dalla prima all'ultima pagina.
Unica pecca che posso realmente trovarci è la presenza di molti refusi: ripetizioni, errori di battitura ecc...
Nonostante ciò però non rovinano la lettura perché ciò che viene raccontato è davvero molto bello e coinvolgente.

Waiting è un romanzo “nuovo”: dai toni cupi, con tematiche difficili, molto diverso dalle commedie romantiche e leggere che eravamo abituati a leggere della stessa autrice, i suoi tratti ci attraggono irrimediabilmente a conoscere sino al più remoto angolo dell’animo umano. Entrambi i protagonisti vivono, o meglio sopravvivono, ad una vita sregolata ed anaffettiva: mentre Alex – musicista dall’animo tormentato – ricerca una fantomatica serenità nei rapporti occasionali con le donne, col fumo e con l’alcool, Emily racimola la sua esistenza con dosi di ossicodone e vivendo nei parchi, risultando invisibili agli occhi della gente. L’amore che nascerà fra loro sarà tormentato ma tremendamente vero e puro: quasi riusciamo a sfiorarne le sfumature e le tensioni che si creano man mano che andiamo avanti col romanzo e con le diverse situazioni che incontriamo. Non ho mai provato cosi tanto i sentimenti dei personaggi come in questo romanzo; se Resta con me era gestito in modo perfetto, Waiting è magistrale. Tutto ben scritto, coordinato, redatto nei minimi dettagli.

Alex ed Emily sono due ragazzi spezzati dentro, distrutti da una vita che gli ha posto solo ostacoli. Sono due anime tormentate dal rimorso e da un passato che continua a gravare sulle loro spalle.
Alex è un cantante, Emily una tossicodipendente.
Ad Alex non importa di nessuno. La sola cosa importante è la sua musica, una passione nata fin da bambino, e il sogno di sbarcare in questo mondo. E' un ragazzo egoista, che non vuole impegnarsi in nessuna relazione ma che non disdegna un po' di sesso occasionale. Un ragazzo come tantissimi altri che cerca rifugio nell'alcool per andare avanti e sopravvivere.
Emily è un concentrato di forza e di codardia. Scappata da un patrigno violento e da una madre che preferiva guardare dall'altra parte anziché aiutarla, vive la sua vita alla giornata. Vive per strada, dormendo nei sottoscala o sulle fredde panchine del parco.
Questo libro non mi ha fatto impazzire ma non è nemmeno completamente da buttar via. E' un NI.
