Finding Paradise #2

Fate of Devotion

Rate this book

After rescuing their daughter, Marie, from corporate-controlled Earth, Millicent and Ryker thought they were safe on their off-world paradise. They were wrong.

Toton, once thought the weakest conglomerate, is now dominating ruined Earth with a sinister new technology. By harvesting minds for use in their supercomputers, they’re enslaving the best and brightest humans to further their agenda. Millie and Ryker know that it’s just a matter of time before Toton realizes the biggest prize—Marie’s “gifted” mind—is merely a rocket ride away.

As the anticorporate Rebel Nation and rival companies alike scramble to thwart Toton’s inhuman machinations, society teeters on the brink. No longer safe, Millie and Ryker must sacrifice their hard-won freedom to return home and stand with the burgeoning revolution—outmanned, outgunned, and aided only by a most unexpected ally on the inside: Millie’s nemesis and estranged sister, Danissa.

But can a family’s love survive greed gone mad in a world that measures human life on a balance sheet?

More action packed than the first book in this series. A rollercoaster ride of near death experiences for our previous characters and an addition of new, spectacular ones to fall in love with.

I wasn't expecting to like this 2nd book as much as I did the first. Continuing series don't always hold my attention. But this one never let up.

Fun and exciting with wonderful new characters.

Fate of Devotion is the sequel in the Finding Paradise series by K.F.Breene and holy cannoli what a sequel. Straight into the action. Ryker and Millicent are a whirlwind together and with Marie they are an unstoppable force. Brilliant portrayal of the action scenes. From start to finish, page after page this had my heart beating fast and my blood pumping. The whole bunch of characters mesh together so well. The dialogue is just brilliant and the banter made me smile many a time. For the sake of repeating myself, what a great sequel! This talented author never ceases to amaze me. Series after series, she has managed to produce stories and characters that are unforgettable. This is definitely one of them!

This book started 5 years after Fate of Perfection ended.
Now Millicent and Ryker have two more children and both natural born:)

Earth plunged into chaos based by few news Millicent got periodically from earth, Toton ruthlessly hunted and crushed other conglomerates and millions get killed.

Ryker, Millicent and Roe realised soon or later those Toton will chasing them in Paradise too if they don't do something about it. So they return to earth and Ryker temporarily took the position as a Rebel Nation leader from Roe.

This book non stop action again, I feel like watching Star Wars haha:)
As usual Marie is a great help, her mum and dad wanted to left her behind with her brother and sister but she not having that, she locked herself in the capsule and R&M have no choice but to take her with them, lol:))
Trent also come, apparently the experiments still continued after Marie's fiasco but something terribly wrong happened with those children and R&M wanted to take those poor kids to Paradise.

I love this series, but Ryker and Millicent's story ended here.
The story kind of open ending for the earth.
Also those children are amazing, I hope Ms. Breene will write stories about them one day:)

Oh, if you fan of Ms. Diener's Class 5 series, I think you will love this series too.

I got this book from NetGalley in exchange for a review.

Very enjoyable read....

I think I enjoyed this one more than it's predecessor, if that's possible. A ton of action, humor and new personalities that interact perfectly with the protagonists from the first novel. 5 stars and 2 thumbs up! ☺

Millicent, Ryker, Trent and Roe are at it again with the aid of the Rebel Nation and Danissa. Earth isn't what it used to be and war has devastated everything. Lives are lost but love blooms even stronger. More gifted children are discovered with some minor issues. This story is so full of adventure, action, and mystery. K.F. Breene draws you into her world from the very first page.

Enjoyable

There were a few moments where the action got a bit confusing, not sure who was where or doing what, or why. But on the whole I've enjoyed this series so far. Will there be more? Seems like there's scope for it.

Love this series

As a techie-nerd this book is right up my alley. It's got a bit of everything, including modified humans with extra powers, aliens, space travel, genius-level thought processes, and tons of coding and technological jargon. It's definitely my speed of story. Love the strong characters and the complex world building. Can't wait to hear if Danissa and Dagger end up together...and maybe further down the road...a lot further, Marie and the new boy they rescued from earth. They fight like crazy now but that could lead to some major sparks and chemistry later on as they mature into adulthood.

Thanks for placing the book on Kindle Unlimited😘!! I love authors who do that because it allows me to read from a larger group of authors and more of each author's works. I have discovered many awesome new (to me) artists through the Kindle Unlimited program and many who I may never have had the privilege of reading their books! So again my heartfelt gratitude to you for allowing us the opportunity!

This book is fast paced, non-stop action! They are back on earth, so we get to know some new peeps and some new and interesting villains. Oh, and robots. Lots of robots. The end felt a little unfinished tho. There were hints at newly formed romances and even what might be the next generation of heroes..... I'm hoping there is a next installment coming.

Better than the first book

The second installment of this series is much better than the first. This one was action packed and had a fast pace. This series is not as good as her other series.

I don't know, I'm in a rut. I just felt like the last one had a great conclusion. I get why there is further story to explore as well, I just can't get into it.

I really enjoyed the story line introduced by "Fate of Perfection", the first book of the series. Unfortunately, this sequel became a trudge through one battle against spider robots to another irritatingly similar battle to yet another battle after the whole book starts with a "Hey things are great where we're at, but earth is a mess and that will eventually mess with us, so come on honey, let's go wreak havoc with our little 4-man group against the most powerful entity on earth. On top of that, we get an alien conspiracy thrown in towards the end with out any explanation other than an "Oh, it isn't humanities fault, these guys did it. All of a sudden they are a part of the story in the second book, and it was laid out flatly, no real buildup or anticipation, just a "oh, this was all done by aliens". We're never sure why because at the last minute they sacrifice some to let the others escape.

Although I will probably read a third installment in hopes that it will wrap these lines together, it would be easy to jump from the first book to a third book with a couple of page "fill-in" summary much like the first and third "Highlander" movies could be watched without the second interfering as long as you had a friend whisper in your ear the minor missing pieces of "how we got here."

Fate of Devotion is the second book in the Finding Paradise series, following in the footsteps of Fate of Perfection. The story continues following the lives of Ryker and Millicent, as well as a their oldest daughter, Marie. Marie being a genetically engineered "natural birth" with amazing talents for working in computers and coding.

In this book, Ryker, Millie and Marie head back to Earth to do battle with the evil Toton, who has taken over the other two Conglomerates and devastated the Earth. Included in the battle, is Danissa, Millie's biological half sister.

As with the first book, it's non stop action. As in, sit on the edge of your seat and bite your nails type action. You find yourself cheering for the motley cast of characters, and we pick up a few new favorites along the way.

What I liked about the book: Action, suspense, mystery and kick ass smart ladies.

If you enjoyed the first book, you are sure to love this one.

It seems Goodreads really wants me to read this Finding Paradise series as I won this book (as well as the first one). I was very curious to find out what would happen next in this fast paced series. This book delivered plenty of action. However, I did not feel as connected to the characters in this book as I did the first. There were too many different stories going on all at once. In the first book, I lived the story along with the characters. In this book, I was just getting updated on what was happening. I will read the next book (if there is one), as the overall plot is captivating. I'm hopeful the stereotypical theme of guy saves girl will not continue to get repeated in the next book.

I absolutely love this series and this book. It takes off after Millicent and Ryker had rescued their child Marie from corporate-controlled Earth. They were living on another planet, safe with more children. However, the discovered there was a plot to destroy earth that could impact their present paradise so the returned to earth to fight a new battle. The characters remained just as amazing as they did in the first book and the children in the book make it even more unique and interesting. I found this to be an exciting series that I could not put down and I highly recommend it.

I rather enjoyed the first book in this series but found this one frustrating. It felt simultaneously action-packed and slow. The action/dialogue combo to be difficult to follow and a little frustrating. I like the creativity and thought put into the story, just wish I could have connected more with it.

Complete let-down after the scope of the first book. Action scenes are too contrieved and, especially in the second half, with no or very little carrying story between scenes. There is also very little character development in this book.

I really enjoyed the second book and conclusion to the Finding Paradise series. If you haven't read Fate of Perfection, you absolutely need to before starting this one as they're not designed as standalones. The book starts on Paradise five years after Ryker and Millicent fled Earth. They've several more children and have made a happy life in on their new planet. Millicent has taken a change in career but still dabbles in technology and finally thinks she's solved the mystery of the metal orb that they found in the Toton building in Book 1. If she's right, the danger it represents threatens their peaceful life and their family's future, leading Ryker and Millicent to venture back to Earth in order to quell the rising threat that Toton presents.

Earth is in chaos with many of its former conglomerate leaders dead or in hiding and Toton ruling with an iron fist with the occasional disruption from the rebellion. With Marie, their daughter, defiantly travelling with them, they seek the one person they know is brilliant enough to help them: Millicent's sister. With a crew of rebels, Ryker and Millicent work with their allies to try and stop Toton and the mysterious forces behind the powerful conglomerate. There was more solid world-building in this book. Breene gives the invaders an affinity to creepy crawlies and while this was strange, it gave a unique spin to the story. Most of this book is set on Earth so unfortunately there wasn't a lot of Paradise but the story line hit the ground running and didn't stop until the end.

There was Breene's customary strong females, alpha males that aren't jerks (all the time - Ryker had his moments but he was so likeable it was forgivable), a stack of humour, particularly of the dry and sarcastic variety, plenty of action and a well thought out plot, witty and clever writing and dialogue and a couple that you're cheering for. Some of the elements were similar to Book 1 where Ryker and Millie were against the world and back in LA, but the story was fast-paced with enough going on that the story line remained entertaining as our fearsome couple put their lives on the line to take on the other-worldly threat.

There were more points of view added to Book 2, including Roe, Trent and Danissa (Millie's sister). This is one thing among many that I love about this author's work - the secondary characters are almost, if not just as, good as the main characters. Trent was hilarious, Roe was dry and tough as nails and Danissa added another strong female to the mix. I also love how Breene has her female characters working together and supporting one another rather than competing forces.

Overall, this was a great conclusion to an excellent series. It was a little over the top and muddled at times as some events happened quickly, but for the most part the build up was wonderful, as was the action and suspense. My only disappointment is that this series was so brief. I loved it and it's going into my Favourites folder.

Fate of Devotion is the second and final book in Breen’s two book series Finding Paradise. As the story unfolds Milli and Ryker have made a nice life for themselves on the planet Paradise. They’ve added two more children to their family the good old fashion way and are very much in love. Although they still love to needle each other. A war between the conglomerates has been raging on earth for almost ten years with Toten being the clear winner having the other two on the run. Milli discovers that Toten is somehow using human brains to power their robots that they use to dominate the other two conglomerates. They also suspect that the real power behind Toten is not human but aliens. Milli and Ryker and Ro the leader of the Rebel Nation realize that it will only be a matter of time before Toten or some other conglomerate will attempt conquer their home planet Paradise. They decide to return to Earth to bring down Toten and the other conglomerates and re-establish a democratic society run by officials elected by the people.
Danissa, Milli’s former programing rival whom she discovers is actually her sister is being intensely hunted by Toten because her brain would make a highly desirable robot. The first orders of business for our heroes are to save Danissa so that she can help bring down the conglomerates and find other children like Marie with special gifts whom Toten or the aliens behind Toten would also find valuable to incorporate into their robots. The final item on their list is of course to bring down Toten and what’s left of the other conglomerates so that they can establish democratic governments around the world. How’s that for a “To Do” list?
This is an ever faster paced story than the first book. Danissa is an interesting character and as much if not more of a focus than Milli in this story. She’s a lot like her sister Milli but doesn’t have Milli’s fighting abilities nor combat experience. Still she’s good under pressure and rises to the occasion. Trent our lab rat has an even bigger part in this story as he leads the rebel forces trying to locate other children with special gifts like Marie.
*** Spoiler Alert***
Maybe it’s because I primarily read contemporary romance but I downgraded this book to 3 Stars because the ending left me wanting for Dannisa even though it’s perfectly realistic. It’s hinted that she and Dagger may have a future together but it’s not a given. Also, Danissa like Milli had a child but she had given him up as was expected of her unlike Milli who fought to keep Marie. I was hoping we’d discover that child was one of the children they’d rescued but we’re never told. So while Danissa is happy to be living on Paradise with her newly discovered family things aren’t perfect in her life. This is realistic but the romantic in me wanted a happily ever after for her as much as for Milli and Ryker.

Our protagonists Millicent and Ryker now with oldest gifted daughter, Marie, and tag along "baby sitter" (reproductive engineer) Trent return to Earth. Millicent had stolen some Toton technology during her escape from Earth, in "Fate of Perfection". Toton then, had been an insignificant corporate conglomeration vs the other two mega corporate conglomerations. News they had received since leaving Earth was that Toton had taken over and Earth and everyone and everything was in real trouble. Our heroes decide to return to Earth, even for the safety of their new homeworld, less Earth's trouble eventually finds it way to their "paradise" world.

Once they arrive on Earth, like the previous novel, it is non-stop action.

If you're going to read the series by K.F. Breene, it might be handy to have oxygen near-by. While K.F. doesn't develop the Jane Austen depth of characters, you do get familiar enough with the characters that their cliché banter remains fun and funny instead of tedious as some "pedal to the metal" action book characters can be.

Fate of Devotion reminds me of Anakin Skywalker suddenly jumping out of a flying car dropping through the congested traffic without a parachute. At least that feeling you may have realizing he's falling and maybe he knows what he's doing with "the force", but he's still falling to what appears to be his death.

Fate of Devotion is like that sudden crazy jump out of the flying car into congested traffic from 100 stories above.... That's it. It is as if you are falling until K.F. may briefly slap an oxygen mask over your nose and mouth to force you to breath, then you're falling again until, THE END.

And "spoiler alert", there are actual scenes where our heroes jump out of sky scrapers because staying in the building would be worse than splattering on the ground.

If you like books that will give you an adrenaline dump for 6-8 hours straight, this series is for you.

I plan on revisiting K. F. Breen. She did not disappoint in this series.

First of all, this is book 2 of the series, if you haven't read book 1, turn away mighty reader for I don't want to give anything away. Book 2 takes place roughly five years after the end of book one so THANK YOU for advancing the characters and not having it take place the next day or a week later. I love series and I love seeing my characters develop, but come on, let them age for crying out loud.

Millie and company are happily living off planet Earth in a place they've dubbed "Paradise" and, indeed, it does appear to be so. For one, you can step outside and not be bombarded by acid rain and/or fog. The only cloud hanging over them still are the reports of Toton and their increasing takeover/hostilities of everything not Toton. Crappy Earth has just gotten crappier and they don't want it finding its way to them on Paradise so they take a slow rocket back to Earth [where they go into a cryo-sleep and don't age.....right, who wouldn't want that!]. Plus Millie left someone important behind from the first book...

Everybody's got their own little sub-missions to fulfill and they're all on a deadline. Get in, get out, don't get noticed. I particularly loved the one liner cultural references from 'days of yore' that the guys were throwing around that nobody understood. Especially when one of them made a comment about something being for the birds and someone quipped, "what's a bird?"

K.F. Breene manages to subtly weave a dystopian world with fantastical characters that draw you in without even realizing it. You're never lost, you're never in an information dump of too much info....except maybe when Trent's talking. Ya gotta love Trent. He grows on you. I don't know how she does it, but I love it no matter what genre it is.

Lots of action

This sequel to The Fate of Perfection was advertised as Ryker and Millicent defending their new home on the planet Paradise from the conglomerates, especially Moxodine, on Earth coming after them and their daughter Marie. It actually turns into a preemptive operation back on Earth to destroy once an for all the power of the conglomerates.

Of course, as soon as they return to Earth, there is constant action as the preeminent conglomerate, Toxon, pulls out all stops to capture them, especially Millicent and Marie. It seems Toxon has developed a way to use human brains as the main processing units in their super computers, and Millicent and Marie, because of their superior intelligence, would make the most powerful computers of all.

The story devolves into a running battle between our heroes from Paradise against the robot defenses of Toxon. Along the way, they find and rescue Millicent's sister and another group of children with super superior intelligence.

While there is plenty of constant action, I found the set up to be a bit illogical. Why would Ryker and Millicent risk going back to Earth, with their daughter, with no imminent threat to their new home, especially after their narrow escape from Earth, knowing there is a vicious war going on? Planing and preparing an in depth defense of Paradise would make a lot more sense.

While I found fault with the set up of the story, I would recommend it for anyone who likes constant action and wants to follow up on the first story of the series.

This book basically didn’t stop at all. There was a point where I was actually wondering if everyone was going to die. There was a lot of death, mainly from red shirts, but the people I wanted to live, lived.
Again there was a lot of technical speak and my eyes would glaze over, I actually think there was more this time, so I didn’t always know what was going on. I’m actually a little unsure about the ending, I think I understand what happened, but there was just so much going on, and people were doing stuff with tech that isn’t real and it was confusing and I didn’t really care about that I just wanted to know if the people were alright.
My favorite character, Trent, wasn’t in it as much as I would have liked, and was constantly belittled and made fun of, it annoyed me because what he was saying was what I was most interested in.
The book had a lot of the same themes as the last one only the stakes were higher, this time two worlds. Lots of kicking butt, lots of close escapes, and just general all out chaos. Really wondering if there will be another book and if there is what will it be about?

This book deserved a 5 star rating but for one thing.. the ending. In my opinion books should have a bell curve to them; the build up, the climax, the gradual tapering off to a well thought out conclusion. This book builds quickly (but not too quickly) to a climax that keeps going and going and keeps you right on the edge (if this was sex, Ms. Breene would be the best partner you've ever had) but then it just drops as if she said "well, that's it, done, bye, get out of here" and I'd like to say she left it as a cliffhanger but nope, she just throws it off the cliff. Sorry, Ms. Breene, I am a huge fan but the ending in this book kinda sucked. (Like Hunger Games final book ending sucked) So, LOVED the book, I did, for all the same reasons I gave a 5 star to Fate of Perfection, the amazing characters, a setting you can easily picture in your mind, witty repertoire, new characters that melt into the story like chocolate on your tongue, drama, edge of your seat action, laughter, tears, it has it all...everything but a great ending.

I'm an avid Breene fan, and although I'm not a fan of Sci-Fi, I gave this series a try just because I love her writing style. Her wit and banter and powerful female characters are a large driving force for many of her readers and this series follows those same footsteps. Of all of her books, Millicent seems weaker than many of her heroines, but she still has a unique strength to her. She's a force to be reckoned with, but just doesn't have the same pizzazz as her other other characters. I don't know WHY there is so much backlash for these series; especially for the "romance" aspect of these books. There is hardly any romance to them! There are plenty of innuendos mentioned, but no sex scenes. It's almost boring in that aspect really. It's also disappointing that the publisher won't release the rights to the books so that she can finally complete the series. Very very disappointing. It's surprising to me since there are over 1000 reviews on here. Despite the series being complete, this book does a good job tying up some loose ends and solving at least part of the mystery.

Best Series Ever Recommended by Kindlr

After learning about how Amazon has tried to squelch authors that aren't under their control, I have mostly found my new reads elsewhere - as a veteran, I gave up some of my freedom in my youth, to defend a country I still believed in, but losing freedom of speech chafed. I have absolutely no faith in the powers that be, at Amazon, and therefore have moved most of my reading purchases elsewhere. Unlimited books are another matter, but many lack in some kind of quality. Not so, with this series, I happily have discovered. Interesting that a company that shows signs of becoming a conglomerate, just like the ones in these books, would decide to promote such a series. While it won't move me to trust them for future reading choices, it is definitely food for thought. This is a great series, no matter what leads you to read it. I will definitely be reading more from this author, despite the organization promoting the books.

Homeward Bound

I gave her this title because of the fact that Millisant, Trent, and the rest of the cast of characters were traveling between two different worlds in the effort to save the future of humanity and Earth from an Uknown enemy who had taken over the Earth and begun the extinction of the human race.
The saving grace of this book was all of the interesting tech that was created for this book. It was highly entertaining to read and great to follow along with the characters and their plight throughout the storyline. It was very well written for us who love science fiction and technology mixed together without having much logic to it.
So yes it’s a fun and easy read, and I would recommend it to anyone who loves science fiction books with a little love story in it.

Interesting conclusion to a very different story than I’ve ever read from KF Breene

I decided to give it a try because I had yet to read anything from her that I’ve not liked. The first book started off slowly, but in the end the good outweighed the bad. IMO. This second book takes us a few years into the future and follows our MC’s as they go back to Earth to try to put and end to the bad guys in order to save their children.

Fast fairly easy read with lots and lots of action. Listened as well as read this story. Narrator was same one from 1st book. It was good to see Millie, Marie and Ryker and Roe- even Trent- back together again....while continually snipping at each other the whole time as they attempt to save the world.

Disjointed, confusing and violent large parts of 'Fate of Devotion' were hard to follow and did not make all that much sense.

There is quite a lot of action but little in the way of explanation which made the reading experience more of a chore than a pleasure. Possibly those who have read the first book in the series may enjoy this sequel but for me it felt like entering a conversation half way through and it does not really work as a stand-alone novel.

Breene missed a number of opportunities to outline exactly how the conglomerates were profiting from their chosen course of action and things really only started to come together towards the end of the novel.

As far as Sci-Fi goes, this one is definitely in the bottom half of the pile.
