This book is, in part, a response to Alexander Schmemann's statement that a diminished view of Mary results in a diminished view of Christ. Thus it seeks to illumine through doctrine, poetry, hymnography and icons a fuller understanding of Mary as the woman who brought the Divine into the world. It focuses on five aspects of Mary's maternity - birthgiving, nurturing, relinquishing, suffering, and joy and how she dealt with these challenges in her life as the mother of God. It also includes a discussion of her obedience as the pivotal point in our salvation. The suggestion is made that each of us in our spiritual journey go through a process of birth (conversion), nurturing (growth in Christ), relinquishing (surrender to God), suffering (carrying our cross) and joy (the abundant life given to us by Christ's Resurrection). Mary is our model as we deal with these aspects of our lives, and is the paradigm for each of us as we make our journey toward Christ. Questions for study and reflection are at the end of each chapter.
