Weaving involves straight, parallel, and gridlike lines, but as Norma Smayda shows, ondulé—weaving with curving warp threads—offers new directions. This is the first book on ondulé textiles, and includes clear information on every aspect, from instructions to design tips to a comprehensive history of the fan reed, the tool that makes ondulé possible. Smayda shares the details of her own learning experiences with numerous ondulé warps in a variety of fibers. More than 180 color photos also feature stunningly beautiful work by five other contemporary and two twentieth-century weavers, plus intriguing historic Japanese textiles. Also included are sections on weft ondulé, designing a fan or hybrid reed, and the thought processes behind twenty-one of the featured projects, including drafts. This reference will serve as foundation and inspiration for your ondulé weaving.

As a beginner weaver I saw the book cover and had to read it. The design was bold, vibrant and beautiful. I had not done any work but straight lines and plaids. I could not wait to try the gentle curves shown. I must admit my first few tries were not as lovely, but the did get better. At present I am working on a throw in jewel tones and it is so colorful and draws the eye. I hope to have it finished within the week/
The book is done with concise instructions and thankfully photographs and illustrations to compare your work with. If you find this craft as interesting as I do then this is definitely a book you want to keep on your shelf for quick reference.
My rating of "Ondulé Textiles - Weaving Contours with a Fan Reed" is 4.25 out of 5 stars.
This is an absolutely beautiful book, whilst a weaver, I have not seen this fan reed technique before. The designs that are acheived are very different, modern and very beautiful. I would recommend this book to anyone who weaves or has an interest in weaving. The book is really well written, and extemely interesting to read and well explained
Prior to requesting this book I had not heard of the technique. This is a fascinating manual, full of inspiring pictures, straight forward instructions and information to inspire the weaver. Very highly recommended. I was given a digital copy of this book by the publisher Schiffer Publishing via Netgalley in return for an honest unbiased review, which I am happy to give.
Ondule is a French word meaning "undulation" and refers specifically to textiles being woven with a curved thread and warp, versus the typical weaving action consisting of 90 degree angles. Norma Smayda, the author, has discovered weaving with a fan reed to accomplish the beautiful textures this technique produces. This is a technical view on a very particular style of weaving, but you don't have to be a professional weaver to appreciate this book! The photos of the woven silks and cotton are truly breathtaking.
