The UIC took his family, they took his life. So he's going to take out their leader, and end them. Eighteen year-old Seph McCauley leads an infamous team of young pirates, and he's out for vengeance. Ever since his parents were torn from him at the age of fourteen, he sees the United Interstellar Confederation for what they really monsters. The supposed heroic faction that saved mankind two-hundred years ago during Earthfall is made up of lies, and now they govern multiple planets across the universe. Having hit even some of the most dangerous of mafias, Seph and his close crew—Dawn, Wyatt, and Hunter —have earned a haunting name, the Ghosts. Working to expose the UIC, they end up on the run from a heist gone wrong, crash landing them on Earth. That’s when they discover what the government has been hiding for two centuries. A primal and ancient force stirs, threatening to end mankind's existence. And only Seph has the key to stop it.
M.A. Roman's breakout novel is a fact-paced, action-packed, tech-heavy thrill ride, full of mystery, conspiracy, friendship, love, and a tasty dose of death and destruction. Its heroes, suffering from the naive confidence of late adolescence, seem to delight in living as though they were invincible; though, judging by their frequent narrow escapes from the clutches of death, this may not be far from the truth. The novel does sometimes fall short in describing the fullness of its universe to a satisfying degree, not surprising as it takes place in an unfathomably large arena, and features technologies that would be all-but-incomprehensible to anyone unfamiliar with the genre. Its anti-establishment narrative is easily relatable, though the motives of its quintessential villain are left, regrettably to my mind, unexplored. Finally, though Roman may focus less of literary beauty and more on drama and characterization (and, of course, technology), he has nonetheless begun to create a rich and complex universe whose, regions, cultures, pasts, and futures are crying out to be further explored. It appeals to the sci-fi geek in all of us. I'm looking forward to Book 2.
