Summer Seventeen & You

Rate this book
He took my boyfriend’s desired position on the baseball team. That was his first mistake. Then, after his parents died, he moved in with his brother across the street from me. That was okay until my dad hired him to clean the pool. I had to set boundaries. My heart belonged to Logan Hart. But when everyone left for the summer, I got bored, and Elliot Shaw was interesting. I questioned everything about me after Elliot and I became friends. Everything that I thought mattered didn’t anymore, and life started to have a different meaning. But, with Logan’s return from summer vacation, Elliot Shaw had to become my best kept secret. I was never supposed to fall in love with him. Love stories are supposed to be happy. Your stomach does flip flops, your heart beats faster, and you react to life differently. Life is happier. But that isn’t this story. This story is messy and haunting. I didn’t want to let Elliot Shaw break down my walls. I didn’t want him to see the demons that lurked behind them. I didn’t want to see his demons either. But… We let each other in, and there was no turning back, even when I begged him to forget about me. This isn’t a fairytale about a prince coming to save me. When you begin to read the pages of my story, don’t say I didn’t warn you. ~ Samantha Scott

Sara Daniell’s story started in the quiet little town of Cedarburg, Wisconsin until her dad’s job transferred him to Arkansas. She thought life would officially be over with that move, but to her surprise, Arkansas is where she found love, married her best friend and had her two amazing daughters.

For years, Sara was a closet writer. Something most knew nothing about because she felt like she’d be looked down upon since most weren’t accepting of writing about fantasy worlds and magic. It wasn’t until her best friend and husband told her she needed to pursue what made her happy and to hide that for no one. So, with a deep breath and a beat up laptop, she did it.

Sara has made many close friends in the writing business and says it feels like a family more than anything else. She says she feels more confident in herself for pursuing what she loves and not letting the limited perceptions of others’ define who she is. She’s a go getter, a dream chaser, and if that makes her crazy, that’s fine with her.

I am a huge sucker for a great YA book and this definitely was one heck of a book!

I love a book that picks my interest and/or one that will keep my interest at a constant. I was so immersed with this book that it was so difficult to put down. All the ups and downs this book took me on, the highs and the lows, it was just incredible.

This book had a great cast, the supporting cast and the plot of the story was amazing.

The book made my heart beat double time and it broke it as well as put it back together. I just kept getting slapped with surprises as the book kept developing.

I can honestly say this has been a phenomenal read, a superb young adult book that will leave you wanting more.

It will suck you up completely!

5 stars!!

AHHHH! This phenomenal story was so beautifully written and one of those true tearjerker reads. I honestly don't know the last time that I've read a story that has given me all the feels while leaving me with the ultimate book hangover days later. Right from the very beginning of this story I was hooked in and I absolutely loved getting to know more about all the characters on a much deeper level. Elliot is hands down one of my new favorite book boyfriends and he instantly stole my heart with his sweet demeanor and the compassion he has for Sam. He knows that she deserves so much more then her jerk of a boyfriend Logan and he does everything to prove just that.

Throughout this entire story I experienced an abundance of emotions that left me on the edge of my seat and just when I thought that I had everything figured out I realize that I was sadly mistaken. That incredibly intense ending left me in tears, but I know exactly why it was the ending this story deserved. My heart still races at the thought of this story and I wish that it was possible to experience this story for the first time all over again.

This was such the perfect story and I cannot recommend this book enough for all young adult readers!

Dear lord, this book, I really took a while to warm up to Sam, she was such a rich little brat, but I realize there are a lot of girls like her in the world. I loved Elliott, he just seemed like the type of guy I would have been drawn to as a teenage girl. Anyways I needed a tissue box to deal with the end of this book. It was heart wrenching. This book is told in Sam's POV.

-I received this book from Reader's Favorites. This is my honest review.

Summer Seventeen and You, by Sara Daniell, is a tender young adult novel about growing up, and learning who your true family is.

Samantha “Sam” Scott is a young, wealthy teenager whose boyfriend is the star baseball player, Logan Hart. But when a newcomer, Elliot Shaw, takes a coveted team position, Sam begins to loathe Elliot with a passion. Even so, the more time Elliot and Sam spend together, the more she realizes just how vain her hatred is, all the while falling more in love with Elliot with each passing day. However, this love is put to the test when she finds out she’s pregnant with Logan’s baby.

The relationship between Elliot and Sam was enjoyable to read about. I loved just how deeply their connection ran; it made Logan’s relationship with her seem so shallow and vain. Those appearances, however, became evident when she became pregnant with his child. The story quickly blossomed into a romantic, inspiring novel with Elliot and Sam at the center of it. Another thing I noticed was Sam’s relationship with her parents. Personally, I feel she should be able to convey this through her actions, rather than her words. It was a bit burdensome reading about them, to be honest.

Even so, the theme of surrounding people who love you is incredibly strong. Sam’s parents had abandoned her, and when Logan tried to make it up to her, only to destroy her with rumors, anger, and betrayal, it was Elliot, Quinn, and Zach who stayed with her. She depended on them, and over and over again they stood beside her, to the very end. And now, I believe they’ll stay together for her daughter’s sake. Though others tried tearing them apart, to Sam, they’re family, not just friends. It was this very aspect of the book that made the ending so bittersweet.

But the book wasn’t perfect. There were a few punctuation errors here and there. During the first word of the chapter, the first letter would be separated from the other. There was, again, an issue with the somewhat awkward moments between Sam and her parents.

Even so, the story was incredibly well done. From a light-hearted teenage romance, to a beautifully tragic tale about a mother who sacrificed herself so that her daughter could live happily, Daniell weaves a deceptively innocent novel about surrounding yourself with loved ones who support you and care for you in any way they can. Family ties, after all, run deeper than blood ties. As such, I would give this book a rating of a 4.3 out of 5.0 stars, and would recommend it to those who love literary genre, sweet romance, and young adult novels in general.

What a story about love, loss, and friendship. 17 year old, Sam or "Trouble" is living on her own because her parents are horrible people! That's all I'll say about that. She has a BFF named Quinn who has been her best friend since early childhood so they've been through a lot together.

Trouble has a boyfriend of two years named Logan, but when Elliott, a new kid on the block tries out, he ends up threatening Logan's position so there starts the jealousy and hatred that is thrown at Elliott in many ways. Early on the reader knows there will be a triangle but Sam is conflicted about her feelings.

Elliott is the boyfriend ANY woman would DIE to have. He is sweet, sensitive, caring, loving, extremely thoughtful and attentive, and supportive beyond belief.

Logan on the other hand is rude, cocky, rough, irresponsible, thoughtless, and will do anything to get into college and baseball, so the reader doesn't root for him as the triangle develops. There was never a point I did root for him, in fact.

I don't want to say much more but suffice it to say that the book is very heartbreaking and yet full of love and the human spirit too.

The only objection or constructive criticism I have is the editing of the book. I'm a retired English teacher and yearbook adviser, so details and grammatical errors are literally impossible for me to ignore. I'd love to see this book cleaned up so there aren't so many errors because most people would be distracted by them.

Recommendation: It's definitely a good book and I would recommend it to teenagers for sure. It has some drama in it but it's not overdone. It probably does overdo Elliott's goodness because where do you find a man THAT good let alone a 17 year old boy? I hope you'll pick this one up and read it, male or female.

Samantha (Sam) Scott is a teenager left to fend for herself after her parents are working jobs in a different city. She is not close with any other people besides her best friend Quinn and boyfriend Logan. Everything changes when her boyfriends prized baseball position gets stolen from him, and by none other then the new boy living across the street from Sam, Elliot Shaw.

At first Sam can't stand Elliot, mostly due to him taking her boyfriends position, but as they get to know each other, she gets to know the real Elliot and sees herself in a different perspective. With Logan being gone for the summer, she spends quality time with Elliot, and begins to have feelings towards him as well. When Logan returns, Sam is faced with a difficult choice, whether to stay with Logan? Or to find true love with Elliot and start her happily ever after.

I loved Sam's character. I felt sorry for her also, knowing that her parents didn't really want her around, but she became strong and more caring every minute she spent with Elliot. I liked Elliot even more though, and was rooting for them the entire book. He was caring, and wanted to support Sam and be the best friend he could.

In this book there's also a shocking twist that comes into play, which started out amazing, but then the end comes and BAM, I'm in tears.
Make sure you grab kleenex when you get towards the end of the book, it's heartbreaking but at the same time a good read.

I need to start by saying this book only took me a few hours to read but days to process. This book was in one word, amazing. From the development of the characters lives, and their interactions with each other all the way until the conclusion of this book. As a new reader of Sara Daniell all I can say this will not be the last, and I am sorry that I waited so long to read her. This book takes you on a journey of discovery and self-discovery for every character that is in this, from Samantha the poor little rich girl that everyone wanted to be, no one really knew, and almost everyone loved to hate to her best friend Quinn, her boy friend popular baseball player Logan, the neighbor boys Zach and Elliot, and their friend Brink. What starts as a fairy tale relationship for Logan and Samantha quickly turns into something else entirely when feelings for another, and past actions are brought it light. Sam realizes that she is worth more than how her family and Logan treat her, so she must make the decision to change her life. Will she choose happiness, or will she stay with what is familiar. This book took me on such an emotional ride, that I am still days later sit wondering what happened. Thank you Sara Daniell for writing this amazing piece of writing. I am reading this ARC in exchange for a honest review.

Samantha thought she had it all when she was the girlfriend to Logan but she didn't truly know who she was till she was with Elliot. Their romance was crazy and out of blue but who she was with Elliot was who she wanted to be. can their love be enough for a forever or does life have other plans?

I have never cried so much at the end of a book like I did with this novel. I will let you the reader find out why just know that tears are inevitable but the journey is beautiful I would love to give this book a 5 but the only thing keeping me from that is that I would've loved to see more to the ending. I would love to know about Elliot and millie so my rating is a 4.5 not a 4 but I can't only do half a star. The writing was phenomenal and the characters in this novel were people I feel like I grew up with in my home town. This book isn't your typical romance and your heart will break but I feel that its a book that needs to be read because life isn't always happily ever after.

This was an interesting story, and I liked how there were many surprises for the reader along the way.

Sam had a lot of qualities that make her a typical teenager, including being the "popular" girl, but since the majority of the story takes place outside of school, I found her to be more endearing and less of the "bitch" she's portrayed as. There were times I rolled my eyes at her actions, but that's her being 17.

At times, Sam's and Elliott's actions were "too old" in my opinion. I forgot they were 17 and 18 when certain things arose. Then of course, there were other times when their ages slapped you in the face and reminded you they were teenagers. It was a little hard to wrangle these inconsistencies in my head as the story progressed.

There were also some inconsistencies with the timeline of the book but giving an example would be a spoiler to the storyline. I feel like it took away from the story a bit.

I feel like the book just ended. More closure for the characters would definitely have made for a better ending in my opinion.

I hate spoilers so there is a hidden note that might ruin a bit if you read it. I tried to push it down far enough so it won't be seen.

Wow!!! What an emotional roller coaster book. Sam was always one that every girl wanted to be in high school but also every girl hated. Logan was the star baseball player that was knock down by Elliot. Even though Sam and Logan were dating things began to change when Elliot came around. Sam and Elliot became friends because everyone was gone for vacations but things began to get more serious with their feelings. Sam goes through things no 17 year old should. Family, love, lost and hate were all things we deal with when we live but not in the same year. Sam is so strong that she is loved by many in her group.

Not yet.....

It's coming soon.....

Hidden note I want more. It can't end where it did. I feel like it needs an fairy tale ending.

I absolutely loved Summer Seventeen and You by Sara Daniell even though she ripped my heart out. I give it 5 stars. This YA novel is full of love, courage, heartbreak and angst. The angst is what I love most about the YA novels. All those hormones raging. The whole will they won't they back and forth.

This book is about a girl named Sam (Love the name by the way.) and her boyfriend Logan. Wait. Nope. Who is this new guy threatening to take Logan's coveted baseball position? That would be Elliott. Yes, this book is about Sam and Elliott. OK, now that we got that all straightened out, let's get to the good stuff. Sam And Elliott don't fall in instalove, it's more gradual. Let the angst begin. I always love when this realization hits. Sam is thrown a curveball, but Elliott chooses to stay be her side. I'm gonna leave it at that because I don't want to give anything away. It is well worth the read.

I fell in love with this book from Chapter one. Oh my god an amazing read. Elliot, Logan and Sam are the main characters in this book and I fell in love with Sam and Elliot. These two needed, deserved and had an amazing love story. This book brings in some real tough subjects like cancer and at risk pregnancy. The ending had me crying and I could not believe the turn it took. The love that is throughout the book is the love that everyone wants.

The writing is very strong as well. This is the first book I have read from Sara Daniel and I loved ok forward to reading more from her. She has made a fan of me and she will of you as well. There is really nothing negative to discuss, just a heads up that there are tough subjects and she will have you crying. There are two books in series but there is no cliff hanger.

I was gift a copy for a honest review. Coming of age does not even begin to describe this story. Not rich kids in high school, not rich versus poor, no wrong side of the tracks... Elliot is the new boy who is the mystery, but hated just for "taking" Logan's on the baseball team. Sam slowly gets to know Elliot at first very unwilling, but still behind Logan's back and finds out maybe he doesn't need to be hated.... maybe he is a real and true person. As their friendship grows and matures so does Samantha. What does that mean for the Sam that Logan knows? Does Logan grow and mature? Your REALLY need to read this book..... just make sure you are ready for the emotional roller coaster. You will tissues at more then one stop on this ride.

**SPOILERS**SPOILERS**SPOILERS**

While it was a cute story in the beginning (and really could have been amazing), it seemed like (after, roughly, the first quarter of the book) the author really just played on the drama angle. It was basically an insta-love (not that there's really anything wrong with that, in general) that never really got the chance to just show the relationship between the two main characters.

This is made all the worse by (at least for me) leaving the reader on edge waiting for some "You Before Me" or "The Fault in Our Stars" ending; which is exactly what I got. Man, that **** pisses me off! SMH...

This book was fast paced, which I enjoyed, but to me lacked depth. It took a while to warm up to the main character, Sam, but that's intentional and a part of the story. As she grew on me, so did the drama. It just was too unnecessary for me. And then it just became sad. I wasn't expecting that, which is fine, but after everything these characters went through, I wouldn't appreciated a different outcome. Or at least an epilogue with a happier update.
I do think a lot of people will like this book, and I will definitely give more books by this author a chance, this one just didn't "do it" for me.

This book was so good! I devoured it in one day, I couldn’t put it down. It’s filled with so much heart and emotion, I was all over the place. I felt the angst, I cursed the characters, laughed out loud, and even cried.

I loved all the characters, they have strong personalities but I absolutely loved Elliot, is so mature and sweet. He has been through so much, my heart broke for him, yet he brings out the absolute best in Sam. The two of them were made for each other.

I highly recommend this if you want something that’s filled with heart, so many sweet moments, yet will still rip your heart out.

As someone who fell in love at 17, I feel I can relate to Sam. This story is an emotional roller coaster, just when you think you have it figured out BAM! The plot either changes or thickens. My heart hurt for and also grew for each of the characters in this book. I would love to have a continuation or story about a few of the other people in this book. I am also looking forward to reading more Sara Daniell!

Summer Seventeen & You grabbed and held my attention from beginning to end. I couldn't put this book down, because I needed to know what was going to happen. This is a highly emotional story, with very real subjects, characters who are not perfect, exposing their true selves. This book was very well written, and had me on the edge of my seat. I appreciate that author Sara Daniell didn't sugarcoat anything. This is the first book I've read by this author, but it will definitely not be my last.

Be prepared to laugh and then cry your eyes out. After finishing this book last night, I was literally at a loss for words. My emotions were all over the place...and still are! Sam is a young beautiful girl. She is spoiled and pretty popular at school. Elliot, the boy next door. Literally. You will hate Sam a little, but then fall in love with how much of a fighter she is. I fell in love with Elliot instantly.

This story is an emotional roller coaster. I was hooked enough that I couldn't put it down until the end. I just needed to know what happened with everyone. I felt there was too much drama and not enough of really letting the characters build their relationships. You spent most of the book just waiting for the next bad thing to happen. You definitely feel Elliot's love but Samantha just seems to be constantly changing her mind.

I loved this book from the beginning and just knew it was going to get better and it did. I loved Sam and Elliot and of course Zach and Sam's best friend. This book was great and well written, I loved the friendship that Sam and Elliot started to grow together and the ending really had me sad for I had hoped that it would have ended differently. But, it didn't and in a way I was okay with that because this book was just so good.

I liked parts of this book and then there were parts I did not. I really didn't like Sam but I hated the situation she had with her parents, especially her mom. That woman was evil. But even with her parents, it still took awhile to warm up to Sam. She just rubbed me the wrong way with her attitude.

This was a great story about Logan, Elliott and Sam. Young love, a little lover's triangle, and some great friends. Great emotional read about Sam who has just horrible parents and finding her worth from someone she didn't expect. Great story, great writing. I will definitely be looking for more from Sara Daniell!
