The Holy Empire of Britannia has conquered Japan. Now known as a mere number 'Area 11,' Japan has lost its freedom and the people have lost their rights. But one Britannian boy dreams of toppling the very system he is a part of. His name is Lelouch. And he has obtained the power to change the world. And how his rebellion has begun!
Two years ago when I was in China in my Kung Fu school, I remember, during the Christmas week, my training-partner asked me for anime recommendation. She saw me watching One Piece episode five-hundred-something with my man over Skype.
Yes, in that off-the-grid location, on a school top of the hill, among a lot of snow, I used to watch One Piece, making my man connected over skype (His idea; he started it. Not me). We would start the anime at the same time and pause at the same time if I forgot my gloves or just wanted a mug of tea or if my connection stopped for off-the-grid-reasons. It was fun, the only fun to be exact, in a kung-fu school.
So, my training-partner-and-friend saw me watching One Piece while my man was sitting in the USA, connected over Skype and as he was also watching it. After several times of catching us like that my friend asked me for anime recommendations.
(Let me show my friend here: she was then a 30 yo Australia-born woman with the far-eastern origin; she came to China with a backpack and a phone that had no google map, no vpn, no google translator. "How did you find the school?" once I asked. "Oh, I found a map in a shop," she said. "You mean paper-map, right?" "Right." "Do you have a compass?" "No. It's not a desert nor a ocean." "O," I said. And then, I saw her passport that had most of the pages sealed and signed, not just a fun-traveler, but as a worker. Name a country, and she was there for 3-4 months with a job. Any sort of job. If she hadn't weighed 38Kg, I would've thought she was espionage who came to spy on me because I was reading too much conspiracy theory articles to research for my book. Ha ha.)
Anyway, anime fans usually recommend 'Death Note' to beginners. But I wanted her to have her brain exploded. So, I went overboard and suggested this one, Code Geass (You're reading Code Geass' review, by the way, I hope you remembered). So, this one, to me, still is the best anime I've ever enjoyed. It has everything I like--sci-fi, conspiracy, an empire in the future, mind-game among characters who play chess, two old friends rivaling each other, cool STEM girls, military moves like chess, metaphysical power, power of voice/ hypnosis, utopian-two-world, extraordinary character development, and a seriously eventful plot.
So, I downloaded the entire series for her. I watched it with her. It was my third or fourth watch maybe, and at that time, I was studying plot-structuring. Oh, yes, during my stay in that school, I was bullet-pointing the events each episode of this series has. And my mind exploded once again as I soon lost the track of it. I never read/ watched any story as eventful as this and as emotionally touching as this. Usually, the more eventful a book is, the less emotion it tends to hold. Because most of the words are spent on writing up the events instead of showing the characters. So, maybe that's why we never see books/animes as eventful as this that it'd get finished within 500 pages/ 40 episodes 'while making me remember each side-characters'. It's an impossible task in the writing world, if not in the anime world.
My friend liked Code Geass, by the way. But I think she liked Lucifer more. I gave her the entire two series of Lucifer that month, downloading it in my off-the-grid internet-speed.

First manga I ever read. It was early evening, I was in 8th or 9th grade, and I was browsing the back aisles of Bookstar(now closed)in my city. I was always interested in manga/anime(didn't know the names of what it was called at the time) but I thought they were mostly provocative due to me scanning over a kissing scene in one of classmate's manga in elementary school-Egad! and not being allowed to watch Adult Swim on Cartoon Network.
After discovering AMVs(first was Death Note) on Youtube one night and sneaking and watching Inuyasha one 4 am morning, I again became captivated by the art and storyline much like when I was younger and addicted to Sailor Moon, Pokemon, Yugioh, Digimon, Kirby, Sonic, and eventually Dragon Ball Z; there was something about those shows that seemed to always capture my attention and bring this intense feeling of pure elation. I even believe Tuxedo Mask was my first ever crush.
Well, I bought the manga, hopped in the car, and my dad drove my sister and I next door to Starbucks where we got a hot chocolate. I was super excited about finally owning this thing that had intrigued me all my life. I dived right in and quickly realized you had to read it the opposite way; once I got a handle on the direction I was hooked.
I loved Lelouch and the art and everything. I found the plot to be interesting but seemed a bit slow in getting to the action, which I didn't want to admit to myself since I had gotten my hopes up incredibly high.
I finished the manga and was excited to get the second and work my way into this new world of Japanese comics. This manga and several anime and amvs led me through some of the best and absolute worst times of my life. They both defined and became a part of who I was as a person; I grew interested in Japanese culture and wanted to study aboard there or at least visit, wanted to dye my hair blue, craved coffee in tin cans, wanted to go to conventions, discovered techno/electronica music, wanted bangs(which I eventually got), wanted to try Pocky, wanted to live in this fictitious world where adventure and excitement was happening around every corner whether you were with friends or not. It became an addiction that both entertained and haunted me which only got worse when I finally grew a "girly" bone in my body and started liking Shoujo manga/anime.
Such dark times my middle school and early high school days were...Would never ever want to go back
It all eventually evened out in the end and I am no longer that obsessed girl I was back in the day(at least not with anime/manga haha).
Don't get me wrong. I still adore anime and manga and every so often I'll pick up a volume at the bookstore and read it, but I've toned down A LOT. Also I left out a lot of details of what that obsession was like. This is a book review after all. Still...I know for a fact that even currently watching too much anime and/or reading too much manga would probably make me relapse.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, Vol 1: 3.5 stars out of 5
Wows. The manga is hella boring. The anime is so much more better, more robotic, more better, and more better. I mean in the manga Lelouch is trying to take over the world with 10 people. That is so smart. While on the other hand, in the anime, he got robots. Robots are more fun.
I actually found that I enjoyed this manga adaptation more than I am enjoying the anime.
Lelouch is a Britannia royal in hiding after the suspicious death of his mother at the hands of the government. He has a real desire to change the world and create a place where his disabled sister can live in peace. Investigating a downed fighter plane, he is given the ability to make people obey him and begins to act on his plan to take down the government of the Holy Empire of Britannia.
This is a very readable adaptation that throws you into the story and doesn't let up. A fun and fast read. I give it four stars instead of five because I do feel like the characters were not quite as dynamic as they were in the anime and there were situations where a little more exposition might have been nice.
One of my favorite anime, it's very deep and it's an eye opener for Political and Social Issues. I really love how they executed their rebellion and I thought that it was brilliant, even better than Mockingjay.
I highly recommend reading or watching this series, if I could give more than 5 stars I definitely would, this story is awesome especially with all of the strategical moves of the main character and his thirst for vengeance is truly amazing. I highly recommend reading this manga
Now this was a strategic anime!! Plus a combination of death note, gundam, and eureka 7 (three of my favorite anime series). Hands down, this is easily amazing!!
Code Geass Lelouch of the rebellion follows a high school student named Lelouch Lamperouge. Lelouch is a student that is very relaxed he puts all his time in taking care of his little sister who is blind and paralyzed from the waist down. However, his peace full school life is disturbed when he gets caught in the middle of a fight between the britannian army and the Japanese rebels. During this fight he meets a girl who calls herself CC or C2 and she gives him a power called Geass. This powers allows Lelouch to control anyone at will but only once he can only give them one order. Lelouch decides to make a better world for his sister so he uses his amazing strategic thinking to help the Japanese rebels take back Japan. This manga takes place in the near future in former Japan now know as area 11. Japan was taken over by the Holy Britannian Empire in 2010 after Britannia created the knightmare frame a fighting robot piloted by people. The characters are very interesting and always changing point of views trying to think if the Japanese rebels are in the right or if Britannia is
I never thought I'd be able to get my hands on a copy of this. Thirteen year old me and current me are simultaneously screaming crying throwing up. I hadn't expected it to be so different from the anime, but it explains why I thought there were so few volumes. The changes made to make the story shorter surprisingly work. Lloyd being an undercover school teacher was so not expected. I'll continue being on the hunt for more affordable copies of the series...
Code Geass is easily one of my favorite series that I've read! The main story plot is always kept interesting, and the characters are extremely memorable. The story of Lelouch, an exiled prince of the Brittanian empire, is filled with lies, deceit, and cunning as he seeks to destroy the empire to which he once belonged. More specifically, he seeks revenge on the royal family, especially his father the Brittanian emperor. When he gains the power to bend others to his will, he creates the alias "Zero" to wage war on the empire. The action is nonstop as he constantly balances hiding his identity and continuing to punish the Brittanians. I loved this series not long after starting it and i highly recommend it.
Buenas buenas, hello there!
I like the softer art style, especially in the beginning. It underlines a childlike innocence, despite the intense power creep Lelouch (and in retrospect, Suzaku) instantly exhibit. I was reluctant to watch this series for years, but it has become an instant classic - especially being from my favorite era of anime (it came out the same year as Ouran!)
Lelouch's side narrations seem somehow more sinister in manga than they did as asides in the anime. Again, I think it has to do with the softness of the art style. As he kills Clovis, it truly is a picture of a childlike virtue of justice at all costs, even if it means killing family. Lelouch is not yet drawn in a way that shows he feels the weight of his choices. I'm excited to see how the art style develops!

Attention, entire world! Hear my proclamation! I am Lelouch vi Britannia, Emperor of the Holy Britannian Empire and your only ruler! Schneizel has surrendered to me. As a result of this, I am in control of both the Damocles and the F.L.E.I.J.A. weapons, and not even the Black Knights have the strength to oppose me now. If anyone dares to resist my supreme authority, they shall know the devastating powers of the *F.L.E.I.J.A.*s! Those who could challenge my military eule no longer exist. Yes, from this day, from this moment forward, the world belongs to me! Lelouch vi Britannia commands you: Obey me, subjects! Obey me, world!
Code Geass, by Gorō Taniguchi & Ichirō Ōkouchi is an award winning manga and anime. The main character, Lelouch, grows up in the Brittanian empire as the 11th prince and 17th heir to the throne. He and his younger sister, Nunally, are abolished at a young age by their father after the death of their mother. He then swears to have his revenge on all of Britannia. Living a normal life as a student of a Brittanian highschool, he is then blessed with the power of Geass by a mysterious girl named CC. The Geass lets him control the action of anyone he comes into eye contact with, but it only works once per person. He then goes on a rampage to destroy the Brittanian empire as an alter ego named “Zero”. On a surface level it may seem like a simple plot. But as you dig deeper, there’s a bigger meaning to it. As a reader, you first root for Lelouch. But as the story progresses you begin to question his morals and actions. He becomes more cold hearted and perhaps starts to show his “true self” as Zero. It’s a roller coaster of emotions as Lelouch continuously puts his friendships and relationships with his half siblings on the line. This is my favorite manga/anime ever. It goes on to show how far someone like Lelouch is willing to go to do what he feels is right.
This book made me never want to watch the anime. I couldn't handle how childish it all seemed in tone. Yes, it's done by the same guy who did Gundam, but I don't care. It's still dumb and childish compared to Gundam. I think it was just imagining watching this in the English Dub hurt me and my experience with this series. Will not be continuing though. I already know how it ends anyway and I guess the ending is good.
I don't think I have the words to even express how much I hated this. I'm sort of ashamed for CLAMP that they even published this manga. It's only redeeming quality might have been the art, if I hadn't already experienced just how awesome the art is in basically every other CLAMP publication.
While the series might be more promising later, the main character really seems to like repeating himself. The power seems interesting enough, but I don’t think I’m likely to continue on with this series.
Nonsense, and not the good kind. Invasion fantasy plus Norse bullshit plus Shitty Future plus Hunger Games bullshit. I enjoy daft Japanese ideas about Europe, but this Holy Britannia isn’t detailed enough to be daft. I think I was reading a fansub, truly bad.
Britain rules the world, Japan is Area 11, lots of fighting, lots of shouting, some supernatural shit, hidden royalty, what kind of vigilante name is Zero!?!
