Each book in B.E.S. Drawing Academy series takes beginning students through a detailed training course in one specific aspect of drawing. Every title presents a set of "Learning by Doing" lessons, progressively arranged from easy to more difficult. Each lesson advises students on how to analyze their own work and correct mistakes. A "Sketchbook" section following each lesson encourages them to stretch their imaginations, experiment with what they have learned, and develop their skills by trial and error. Perspective Drawing ’s 20 lessons teach students the fundamentals of perspective, the technique that gives flat-surface illustrations of both indoor and outdoor scenes the illusion of depth and distance. Separate lessons focus on room interiors, building exteriors, town squares, roads and rivers, and wide-perspective landscapes that have distant horizons. Instructive photos and illustrations in color and black and white are presented on every page.
Good solid instructional book on drawing perspective, something which has boggled my non-mathematical brain since I picked up a pencil to draw in the third grade. For years I've been able to "fudge" perspective in my paintings or ignore it all together by sticking with single subject drawings. Two years of art in college didn't help at all and so I was left frustrated with the mystery behind perspective.
The book immediately immerses you in perspective drawing from the first page with examples and not a lot of bla bla bla which my ADD can't bother to read. I immediately grabbed pencil and paper and from the first page, I was copying exactly what I was seeing. It still took me a bit to figure out where the point of intersection was suppose to be for all my radiating lines but stubbornness got me through. My husband saw my unfinished drawing of a street in old Tokyo and was impressed, that's a great compliment since he has a background in engineering and drafting and perspective is nothing to him.
I recommend this book to all those who are challenged by perspective drawing. It will greatly enhances your skills, it's easy to read and understand, and it's page after page of examples and practice.
The earlier exercises in this were straightforward and useful but as the book went on, I found it laid out poorly in places and the instructions for later drawings missing steps making it frustrating. I thought there were some valuable perspective tips in it though, hence the three stars.
