I have the 1952 edition. I remember liking this book as a kid. The main moment I remember from the book is when a man expected her to be ugly because... she was making requests? - and was shocked when she came in to his office and was pretty. Sad world. Good for beautiful Florence Nightengale for doing good in the world anyway.

I bought this book from Friends of our local library as it reminded me of my mother. She was a nurse and told me as a child of Florence Nightingale. This is a young child's story and I'm rated it based on that. I enjoyed it just the same.

This is a children's book that gives a historical background on Florence Nightingale. She was a shy child who like to help others. A family friend took her to service sick families and to the Pauper's Hospital (without her mother's permission) and this is what gave her the desire to be a nurse. She went from a shy child to a sought after young adult. It took her 3 years to talk her mom into allowing her to go to Kaiserwerth for Nursing School. She went to Paris to clean up and manage a hospital there, using the trust her Dad gave her. She contracted cholera during the Crimean war. She cleaned up a Barrack hospital in Scutari (Crimean War) that had rats and a failed sewer system. She opened a nursing school.

Having just read the Landmark version of Florence Nightingale's story, I noticed that this version definitely focuses more on her childhood, and has way less details about her life in general. It appears to be written for a slightly younger age group. However, it was still well written and provided some additional details not in the Landmark version. Her story is just wonderful!

Florence was such an inspiration. I enjoyed learning about her connection to the light brigade during the Crimean War.

A bit thin, but served as a decent introduction to her life for my 6 year old. Not up to Leighton's best.
