***2018 RELIT LONG SHORTLIST*** Think the world can’t get any crazier? Think again. Set in near-future Toronto, Skeet Love tells the story of Shane, a conspiracy theorist and aspiring rapper; Nina, his girlfriend; and Brit, the couple’s lover. Wildly suspecting the threesome is under surveillance by a secretive religious cult, Shane moves the group to seek refuge with his father, a smuggler and taxidermist. And then the truth really gets weird. Craig Francis Power’s third novel is an uber-cool drug and sex-fuelled critique of the world we think we know.
This book was intriguing. It was hard to follow at times and the characters were odd and did not exactly give me any reason to care about them. In my opinion Craig did an excellent job of creating a crumbling world although we only got to view it through the lens of these characters and their adjacent journey. Overall i enjoyed the book, read it in less than a day, and got several laughs at the jokes and outlandish views the characters presented throughout. Good way to kill a afternoon. Also Craig that nod to The Road, top notch i liked that very good.
I was really excited for this book and was sadly disappointed. I understand where the author was trying to go with the story but at the same time couldn't figure out his thinking process while he wrote this. It may peak another readers interest but didn't peak mine.
I've rarely come across an author whose books are so distinctly different in terms of style, length, etc. as Power. This is in some ways my least-favourite of the three, but only by a small margin.
