It’s past midnight, and there isn’t a soul in the library. Moonlight fills the dusty shelves. Suddenly, the lights flicker on and off, and a book flies off the shelf! What unseen force is at work? Get ready to read four spine-chilling stories about spooky libraries! This 24-page book features controlled, narrative nonfiction text with age-appropriate vocabulary and simple sentence construction. The colorful design and spooky art in the book will engage and terrify emergent readers.
Spooky Libraries is part of the Tiptoe Into Spooky Places Series. There are 16 books in the series, transporting kids to all sorts of scary places like mummy tombs, horrific hotels, and haunted locations. Fun! I love spooky stories....even children's stories....so when my library added this book, I just had to read it! I'm glad I did.
Each page is nicely illustrated with full color photos and artwork. The book is visually appealing so it might be a great book to entice reluctant readers to enjoy reading. In the back of the book is a glossary of ghostly terms used in the stories, a short bibliography, a suggested reading list and a weblink for kids who want to learn more about ghostly topics. This book -- and series -- could easily be used in a classroom as a writing prompt, group reading, solo reading or just a fun activity.
All of the stories are age appropriate for elementary to middle grade students. The stories are spooky but not overly scary.
I'm definitely going to read more in this series, and buy a book or two to send my grand kids at Halloween!
This was a very short book geared toward elementary school age children, in which four libraries, found in the United States, were highlighted. Each one was given several pages in which a very brief history of the library was discussed, along with the reason behind the hauntings. Each of these libraries is still open and functioning.
I particularly liked the story of the Millicent Library in Fairhaven Massachusetts. This library was originally built by a father for his daughter Millicent, who died of heart failure. It was rumored she was buried in the foundation and can still be seen dancing in the aisles. The library itself is fashioned like a huge, gorgeous, Victorian mansion.
The book also contains a glossary, index, Read More section where other books are highlighted and a section highlighting online resources.
I had never heard of any of these libraries, so it was really interesting to read about them.
Informative and intriguing. I didn't know about any of these places, but some I would like to visit now. What's better for a reader than a haunted library. So cool! This was written well with great pictures and color. I enjoyed reading about these places and the short version of what and why. It's a great way to dip a toe in.
Libraries built on graveyards, one haunted by the specter of its namesake, another that causes each library director to come to a gruesome fate. Glad my library isn't one that is highlighted in this book! However, I now want to go on a haunted library roadtrip.
