Sister and brother mice experience the day through different sounds.

The illustrations are sweet, but can be confusing. For example when Swish is pulling Squeak in the wagon, apparently Squeak is making sounds but readers can't tell because his mouth isn't open. When "their ears find each other" children will have to hunt for Squeak because he's not obvious.

Not recommended for storytime.

Swish & Squeak’s Noisy Day by Birgitta Sif is a unique children’s story that follows a typical day for two mice that are sisters. We follow them from waking up in the morning to school for the day, and then to the fun afterschool activities before finally getting to bedtime. This story is full of all kinds of noises that children will love to imitate. How do I know? My two toddlers love to follow along with each page just to hear the different sounds that they can make while it’s being read to them, making the book interactive between parents and their kids. The pictures have a hand drawn look to them which most children’s books don’t use anymore so in my opinion, it helps to make Swish and Squeak stand out. The pages are very colorful to look at so it keeps the children interested in looking at the book at the same time as listening to it being read to them. Registering in at only twenty-three pages, it is perfect for a short story on nights where your child is already ready for bed or even for those toddlers just learning how to read on their own.

Familiar sounds somehow sound different in the night or in the early daylight hours, and sometimes those sounds can be downright jarring to someone waking up to the sweet sounds of nature. When Swish is awakened by the sounds of her brother Squeak munching far too loud on his breakfast, she is not thrilled, but they head off to school, and notice many interesting sounds along the way and at their destination. After a day filled with sounds and lots of onomatopoeia for readers to pronounce with enthusiasm, the siblings return home. Appropriately, their day ends with the sounds of Squeak snoozing away. Many readers will be able to relate to the Swish's feelings as well as the sounds she hears throughout that noisy day. Isn't it odd how some days just seem quieter or noisier than others? This would provide a fun read aloud for youngsters, perhaps at bedtime or maybe just as a calming down title.

Sif, Birgitta Swish & Squeak's Noisy Day. PICTURE BOOK. Alfred A. Knopf, 2017. $16.99.

Swish is a young mouse with ears that hear a lot. From morning until night she hears noise: her sister, Squeak, crunching on cereal, the squeak of her wagon wheel, the school bell ringing, and more. By day's end she is tired, and the very last sound she hears is her sister's light snores as she goes off to sleep.

This is a simple book that highlights sounds. The text is made up of lots of sound words--CRUNCH, SQUEAK, NIBBLE, etc. The illustrations are done in pinks and pastels--seemingly intent on appealing to a female audience. There is little to complain about with this picture book, but also little to set it apart. Its a nice book but nothing to rave about.

I wanted to love this because it looked so good. Saying this, the illustrations are amazing. They are so lovely and colorful with a beautiful color palate. I loved the color palate a lot, but the story was just okay. No where in the story does it mention the two little mice are sisters. It only mentioned it in the sleeve part of the book. I also thought some parts were so abrupt. When Swish hears crunching noises she looks to find out what is making that noise and sees a little mouse eating cereal. This we see through an illustration, but I would loved some text like, "Oh. It's just my little sister blah blah." but it just moves on to Swish how she hears different sounds through her routine and through the day. I know it's nice when the art speaks for itself, but in this case I was not impressed.

Birgitta Sif has a unique style in her picture books. Noisy Day is a new addition to her collection of other well written (Oliver) and well-illustrated (Miss Hazeltine) books. Two mice (Swish and Squeak) go through the day very aware of all the noises they here. It's a great potential interactive read aloud since listeners can be invited in on making the noises throughout the book. t's a great mentor text for showing the role of and how to use onomatopoeia. Great addition to home or school collection. Keep you eyes open for other books by Birgitta Sif.

This book had adorable illustrations, but all of the noise noise noises in it drove me bonkers. I do fully realize that people are writing about how precious it is and what a great commentary it is for noticing the world around you.

Nope! It made me feel like I was in a sensory nightmare! And I don't even have sensory issues. Hard pass on this for me.

This book is a cute book, I like it. It's about two mice who go about their day getting ready for school and the things they hear throughout the day. For my classroom I would tell the kids to listen and pay attention to the sounds they hear throughout the day. From the time they get up to the time they go back to bed; make a list of all the different sounds you hear and describe them.

Squeak's ears hear lots of things as the day goes by. The illustrations are intricate and the onomatopoeia make reading it out loud interesting for the reader's ears, as well.

The artwork in this book is sweet. I think the story could have used some edits as it felt a bit weak, but it was still a good book. This could be a good book for kids who are sensitive to sound.

absolutely gorgeous illustrations. great for a read-aloud, not so much for a child to read on their own— it's not the most exciting story.

Beautifully illustrated and a fun story that is always popular to read. Kids sing and make the noises as I read along :)
