Rogues of Redmere #1

You're the Rogue That I Want

Rate this book
Red never shies away from a challenge.

Never.

But when Miss Hannah St. John strides into his life demanding—yes, demanding—he help her, he’s certain she’s more challenge than even he can handle.

Hannah is determined to transport an artifact from France—one that will change everything—even if it means working with a lawless man like Red. Nothing is more important than preserving history.

Nothing.

Not even the touch of a smuggler who inconceivably makes her stomach twist.

When it becomes clear the irritating bluestocking will do anything for this blasted artifact and needs saving from herself, the earl-turned-smuggler steps in.

Carting a cursed stone across the country with a know-it-all woman is not Red’s idea of fun, particularly when their journey runs far from smoothly…so why does he find himself enjoying her company just a little too much?

You're the Rogue that I Want is book 1 in the Rogues of Redmere series. It can be read as a standalone story and has a HEA. It includes some steamy content.

'You're the Rogue That I Want' by Samantha Holt is book one in the "Rogues of Redmere" series. This is the story Hannah St. John and "Red". Hannah has been helping her father with his artifact finding and bring them back to London. Hannah was told to go to Red who is a smuggler and try to get him to help her bring back a artifact. But their first meeting doesn't go so well. Red has been drinking and doesn't agree to help help her. Then next day Red finds her being taken by someone who had promised to help but was just taking her money and possible her. So he agrees to help her which starts her to get him to agree to also take it back to England too. Red is actually more than a smuggler as we find out. But their trip has is up and downs along with their feelings. This was a fun, exciting romance that I truly enjoyed! The secondary characters were really good too! Another Great Book by Ms. Holt!

”The artifact is a large stone.”
”A large stone?” Both his brows rose.
”It has inscriptions on.” She leaned forward, unable to keep the grin from her face. “In different languages.”
”Oh yes.”
”Do you not see how exciting it is?”
”I can’t say I do.”

Characters:
Red: 31 (Earl of Redmere)
Red’s father died when he was 21, so he has held the title of Earl for 11 years. Red portrays himself as a smuggler, but the upstanding Earl’s side business is really a front to aide the government in the war effort.
”Once the smuggling stops being a cover to help the war effort, what then? Do we keep going? Or do we turn our attention to more legal means of profit?”

“He hated to think what drama and scandal there would be if their upstanding Earl of Redmere was discovered to be a smuggler. As much as they liked smugglers, they did not want their lord to be one.”

Hannah:20
Hannah is an independent, strong-willed woman. Her father is an explorer and is always gone on some grand adventure. However, it doesn’t seem like his absence had any type of negative impact on her upbringing. In fact, just the opposite because she has a passion for history and historical artifacts.
”My father has been an explorer since I was a little girl. He has been on many expeditions and is well respected in London intellectual circles. He has helped develop the collection of antiquities at the British Museum.”
“Father has travelled since I was a child. Sometimes I went with him, but obviously he would not let me go to a war zone.”

The Story:
Cornwall, England 1811.
Hannah needs the help of a smuggler to ensure a priceless Egyptian artifact is moved from Paris to London. Red (the Smuggler) has no interest in assisting her, but when she almost gets herself kidnapped he steps in and agrees to help Hannah with her quest. The road is not smooth, however, as Hannah failed to mention there might be a curse associated with the stone. This little wrinkle makes their journey quite eventful. 😁
”So we’re stealing a stolen object that was stolen from Egypt by Napoleon, and we’re bringing it to England and not returning it to where it belongs?” Nate asked.
”Red groaned inwardly. “Yes, that is about the measure of it.”
”His brother shrugged. “Sounds reasonable to me.”

My Thoughts:
“The sooner we get that blasted stone to London, the better.”

Red & Hannah’s path is paved with many obstacles: storms at sea; wagons stuck in mud; sickness; annoying travel companions; lost luggage, cows and many more. It was becoming increasingly clear the stone might, in fact, might be cursed. However, all these obstacles created scenarios where these two were forced to rely on each other. So maybe it was actually fate allowing for love to bloom rather than a curse from an artifact. 🥰

These two were charming and I loved watching their attraction grow. Red was not looking for a wife, but Hannah’s intelligence, passion and curiosity for life was just too much for him to resist. These two were both snarky with each other and their conversations usually resulted in some type of comment that made me chuckle.
“There is no need to be rude.”
“There is every need. I hardly think you were considering manners when you interrupted my peaceful drink.”

“There is no need to be snappish,” she scolded lightly. “You’re not a morning person are you, Red?”
”He hefted the artifact into his arms. “Is anyone?”

“If I were really so unscrupulous,” he murmured. “I would have taken you to bed on that first night.”
“There was no bed,” she pointed out, before she had even processed his words.”

Overall, this was a light and easy read. The story moves along well and it was fun to see what the next mishap would bring. The characters were well developed and the secondary characters added some additional fun. The story is a slow burn and is sprinkled with adventure, romance, passion and fun dialogue between the H/h. I think it’s a good start to the series and would recommend.

Quotes:
”Don’t be jealous of my finer tastes. You’ll enjoy the nicer things in life one day—once your balls have dropped.”

“Well, we cannot have Napoleon stealing all their history!”
”So you’re the better thief?”

“Believe what you wish, Miss St. John, but you will not find me getting excited over a lump of rock”

“He’d rather be having his fingernails pulled out one by one than doing what he had to do.”

“He was not unaware women found him handsome, though his wealth would have made him attractive no matter how much he looked like the rear end of a farm animal.”

“I do not care if you wish to walk around like some creature from the deep, but I am sure you do.”

When I had some Amazon tokens for my last birthday, I decided to buy some recommended traditional Regency romances, partly as research for my own Regencies, but also because I just like to read that style. But for comparison I also bought the top three bestsellers on Amazon on the day. This is one of those top three, so we can safely say this is the type of book that a great many people enjoy reading.

So let’s get one thing clear right from the start - this is not a Regency romance. Sure, there are references to pelisses and bonnets, breeches and mail coaches, and so on, but with only minor tweaks the whole story could be lifted and replanted in almost any era from late Victorian onwards. I can see it as a very successful contemporary romance. But not Regency. There is nothing at all in the characters’ behaviour or attitudes that speaks of that era.

So here’s the premise. The hero, Red, is the wealthy Earl of Redmere, whose hobby is smuggling. The heroine, Hannah, is a twenty-year-old who’s travelled alone from Hampshire to meet Red to persuade him to cross to France to collect a priceless historical artifact. And ‘travelled alone’ is not here a euphemism for ‘accompanied only by a lady’s maid, coachman, postilion and two footmen’ - she supposedly took the public coach. Alone, and no, she’s not a housemaid or governess, she’s supposed to be well-to-do. So my eyes are already rolling pretty hard at this point.

Our hero refuses, naturally, but changes his mind because reasons. At this point, I expected an adventure, with a trip to France and all that, but no, Red sends his crew off to France, and the next thing the boat is returning with the artifact. Then the heroine wants him to take her to London. He refuses, then changes his mind, because reasons. And off they go to London, abandoning the coach and accompanying servants pretty quickly because reasons.

And it becomes obvious from this point on that the reasons are actually to ensure that the hero and heroine are thrown together in a series of carefully staged vignettes of gradually rising sexual tension, strung into something vaguely resembling a narrative. Our heroic pair enjoy a night at a deserted inn, share a room at various inns and at one point are almost drowned crossing a river, which lucky escape causes them to kiss passionately on reaching dry land. Of course it does. And eventually all this increasing steaminess leads to the natural conclusion, whereupon our virgin heroine unleashes her capacity for multiple orgasms. Of course she does.

Now, there’s nothing at all wrong with any of this. In a contemporary romance it would be unexceptional, and even in a Regency it’s fine if the plot scaffolding is a little less flimsy than it is here. You can see how little the author is concerned with the background by her treatment of the priceless artifact. It’s described mostly just as a stone, and we learn later that it’s a mini-Rosetta stone, showing the same text in two previously undeciphered scripts. At first it takes two men to lift it off the boat. Later, the hero manages to cart it about while also carrying other luggage. Later still, he drops it rather painfully onto his foot. But the author never bothers to describe it. I imagined it as being stone-like, that is round, until it was described as being propped up against a wall. Only then did I realise that it was a slab or tablet shape. But we’re never given any indication of the dimensions, because at bottom it’s just a plot device.

Some other minor grumbles. Whisky. Repeat after me: whisky has no ‘e’ in it, not in Regency-era England. Lots of modern language (’the boss of me’? Really?). A hefty dose of typos, especially towards the end, as if the proofreader just gave up at some point. But the author’s done some research, especially into travel times, and I was delighted that, when new clothes were needed, they didn’t just pop into a shop and emerge fully kitted out again. But so much was out of kilter for a Regency novel that these details couldn’t redeem it for me. And then the ending - oh dear. After building up so nicely to the climax (so to speak), the author spoiled it all by tossing in one of those stupid moments where everything could have been resolved by a two minute chat, but no, the hero has to be all noble, for the heroine’s own good. Bleagh.

At this stage, I should point out once again that this was one of the three bestselling Regency romances on Amazon when I bought it. It’s still highly ranked, and has a 4.5 review average (which is stunningly good). Which means my poor opinion of it is shared by - well, probably nobody. If you don’t mind a fairly non-authentic Regency, with a strong focus on the main characters having the hots for each other, and not a lot else, then I commend this book to you. In fact, anyone who’s not me would probably enjoy this book enormously, and I’m just an eccentric pedant to grumble about it. On the plus side, I read it to the end, didn’t skip much and (looking on the bright side) all that eye-rolling is probably good for my facial muscles. Or something. Three stars.

Hannah St. John is entrusted by her father to bring an artifact from France to the British Museum. She hires the Earl of Redmere, who is a smuggler. Red only decides to help her after she unknowingly hires thieves to bring the artifact from France.

Red's ship delivers the stone artifact to Cornwall. Now they must deliver the stone to the British Museum. The trip to London gives Hannah and Red time to fall in love. But will Hannah claim that love for herself, or will she chose the study of history over Red? Will they make it to London what with all the bad luck they have been having on the journey? Is the stone artifact cursed?

I gave this book three stars because of the spelling errors and the word choice errors. The main characters are fleshed out. The plot is simple. This novel has potential.

Blurb :

Red never shies away from a challenge.

Never.

But when Miss Hannah St. John strides into his life demanding--yes, demanding--he help her, he's certain she's more challenge than even he can handle.

Hannah is determined to transport an artifact from France--one that will change everything--even if it means working with a lawless man like Red.

Carting a cursed stone across the country with a know-it-all woman is not Red's idea of fun, particularly when their journey runs far from smoothly...so why does he find himself enjoying her company just a little too much?

My review :

When a rake meets a bluestocking, sparks flies and an adventure begins.

I have read some of Mrs Samantha Holt novellas and she has a talent for creating fragile women who find their strength and their voice in the presence of the men who will fall hard for them.
Here, it is a different scenario, first the length as it is a novel, then the heroine is stronger, a woman raised outside the society’s expectations and determined to have a life outside of it.
The hero is too unconventional as he is quite in an illegal business, not a pirate but close too.
This was a road trip with no villains, only two peoples from two different settings getting to know each other.
Each one has its concerns as they are both very involved in their activities. But the more they get close to another, the more those differences appeal to the other.
It was a lovely journey with two lovely persons finding the one able to fill their soul and heart.

Not my favorite SH book..

I was tempted not to get this book because the hero’s name was Red, I thought he had red hair, and I hate red hair on a man, but I decided to get it anyway and I’m sorta glad I did. It was all about an Egyptian stone and it, supposedly, was cursed and caused one mishap after another, from the ship that went after it getting beat to hell in a squall to Red and Hannah’s troublesome trip to get the stone to London.

Oh, and he was called Red because he was the Earl of Redmere. Personally, I would have liked him to be called by his name Guy Kingsley.

It was an okay read but it didn’t have the great sexual tension I associate with Ms. Holt’s books, until 50%, which I found a little odd. And she’s gotten to where she’s making her heroines kind of plain or this one with a “strong” nose, whatever that means, and making the hero god-like. I have a hard time seeing that pairing. I’m shallow (not afraid to admit it) so I don’t want real life characters in my books: no plain heroine, no hair that’s wild and frizzy, no BBW, no curvy, just a beautiful hero and heroine.

Anyway, it was just an okay read for me, a little fun but no thrilling moments, no OMG moments, no, mystery, just a trip of 100 miles that took several days. LOL, can’t say I would like that trip, that might be my OMG moment.

As I said earlier there wasn’t any sexual tension until 50% of the story, so be patient. Then there was explicit sex. There was really no swearing to speak of.

As to the narration: Stevie Zimmerman was great! She gets better with every book she narrates. She laughs and whispers when it’s called for and that’s the two most important things to me. Also, her voices are fantastic.

I tried and I tried but I couldn't. So the time of death is at 55%. What could possibly go wrong here? I mean a smuggler lord and a bluestocking is a great combination. I really disliked Hannah. When did insulting a man's honor and intentions when you need help become a woman's strength and backbone? Stubborn and completely unreasonable she gets Red and herself in trouble all the time. And the whole traveling together and the forced proximity creating feelings when otherwise there would not have been even a glance between them just seemed forced and not genuine. I liked Red though. He is a typical lord of the manor of his time who defies laws for the thrill of doing something illegal while also helping local villagers and his friends. But Hannah just ruined the entire story and I struggled to continue. The book is well written with a good conversation but not for me. Sorry I will pass this one.

This was just ok. It had some cute and fun moments. A bluestocking and a smuggler, plus a road trip that has a lot of setbacks. Also, the outlandish aunt that gives comic relief. The romance was just meh though.

This was an okay read but it didn’t wow me. It had too many inconsistencies and grammatical errors to justify giving it more than three stars. Seeing as it did have potential however - I will likely read the next in the series.

You're the Rogue that I Want is book 1 in the "Rogues of Redmere" series by Samantha Holt. WOW! What a fun, exciting and enticing story!
Ms. Holt is another amazing storyteller. She captures readers' heart and their attention, and draws them into the story. She's another Regency author that I usually purchase her books, with no doubt that it will be a fantastic read, and "You're the Rogue That I Want", wasn't a disappointment to me.
Well written with well-developed and captivating characters. The storyline is unique, intriguing, captivating and seductive. What happens when you put a Bluestocking and a Smuggler together, why sparks of course?
Meet, Earl of Redmere "Red", an Earl turned Smuggler and Miss Hannah St. John, a precarious Bluestocking who has been entrusted to take a precious artifact from France to England by her father. Her determination to make sure the artifact gets back to England, at all cost, including her life and love, is astounding.
The secondary characters are as much fun as the main characters. I absolutely loved the characters and the story.
Can Red and Hannah find their HEA or lose all?
Intrigue, adventure, passion, secrets, danger and romance makes for an entertaining and enticing story. All is not as it seems.
Amother must read by Samantha Holt!

Red is a smuggler who lives and works by his own rules. When Hannah St. John meets with him in a bar, he is anything but impressed by the woman, who seeks his assistance in smuggling an ancient Egyptian artefact across the border. Although he first rejects her request, Red and Hannah inadvertently cross paths again, which ultimately leads Red to bend to her wishes. Little does Hannah realize that Red is, in fact, of royal blood, nor does Hannah know that the stone they are carting is cursed. With both feeling an inexplicable desire for each other, it is just a matter of time before they bend to each other’s wills.

Samantha Holt’s intricate tale of a rogue-smuggler of title is more charming than not. Initially loathing each other, Hannah and Red are glad to finally part ways after their initial meeting, but it is not long before they are pulled back towards each other, in order to smuggle an artefact over the border and into her father’s hands. I liked how Hannah thought Red to be a low-life bum, smuggling goods in order to make ends meet, only to find out that he was of title and did it for adventure, and nothing more. As each member of Red’s crew becomes ill, blaming the curse of an artefact for their ailments, it is not long before Red and Hannah are forced to work with each other, one on one, to get the job done. Red’s longing for Hannah is overridden by his desire to get back to his men, but he is inexplicably lured back into her company by an invisible lure, as Hannah inadvertently steals his heart in every possible way. I quite enjoyed You’re the Rogue that I Want, and recommend it to fans of mystery, madness and mayhem, which is embroiled in a love that will withstand all that gets in its way.

Hannah St. John finds herself in the small Cornwall village of Penshallow after a long journey on her own, seeking help from the infamous smuggler, Red, to bring a priceless Egyptian artifact from France to England. Red is uninterested, as he has no need for more money; he's an earl, after all. Red is careful to keep his smuggling endeavors quiet and wholly unconnected to his life as the upstanding Earl of Redmere. Of course, Red's smuggling ring is just a front used to get spies and supplies into France to aide efforts in the war against Napoleon, though even the Home Office, though aware, cannot acknowledge the operation, so the dangers in being caught are just as real. But when Hannah's determination to retrieve the artifact nearly results in her kidnapping, Red decides to listen to her plea for help a bit more closely. Red has absolutely no interest in the historical merits of this artifact, but winds up agreeing to help Hannah anyway, since she is on her own and he is concerned she'll wind up with more criminals. Once the artifact is retrieved, Red winds up accompanying Hannah to London to deliver it to the national museum, encountering heaps of bad luck along the way.

I was very unimpressed with Hannah's arrogance, attitude, and need to have things her own way, but she does at least realize she's being ridiculous and starts to straighten up as she gets to know Red more. I thought this one was a bit anticlimactic, but I was eventually satisfied with the resolution; I would recommend it.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Blog link: https://mustreadalltheromance.blogspo...

Cornwall, England, 1811
The Earl of Redmere🐺🍆🌋🔪🔫, quite frankly, is the head of a smuggling ring during the Napoleon war with France. He is also in the employ of the British 👑Crown, smuggling spies in and out of France, but the 👑Crown will disavow him if he is ever caught. Red🐺🍆🌋🔪 as he is simply known, smuggles in French 🍷wine and other goods in short supply to Cornwall because of the war.

Hannah💃💋 travels far by mail coach to ask Red🐺🍆🌋🔪🔫 to smuggle a large, priceless Egyptian artifact out of France that her father found. Red🐺🍆🌋🔪🔫 is her last hope. When she finds him half drunk🍺 at the Ship⛵ Inn in Cornwall, He turns her down. Hannah💃💋 won't give up.

Absolutely love this series! The men are all handsome in their own way, and even though they act like rogues, they are truly gentlemen at heart! The series is connected by the same players appearing in each book📙, but there is enough explanation for each book to be a standalone.

A well written story but it lacks a bit in plot. It is very simple. Lacks depth to the characters but they develop nicely through the story. Hannah annoyed me most of the time with her lack of respect for Red. She insults ham a lot and does not react to what he says. That brings them in trouble a lot of times and that was annoying for me.
I like the writing style and the read was easy and enjoyable.

Hannah St. John is a young and independent Bluestocking. Taking after her father, she has a deep-seated love for history. Tasked by her father to track down Red, a smuggler with whom her father has done business before, in order to enlist his help to retrieve a priceless Egyptian artifact from Napolean-occupied France.

Red, otherwise known as the Earl of Redmere, is not in the smuggling business for the money, but in order to help the war effort. Therefore when Hannah offers to pay him in exchange for bringing the artifact across to Englnd, he declines her offer. Hannah is nothing if not persistent, but he remains unswayed. That is, until Hannah nearly places herself in the line of danger. As a gentlemen, Red feels honor bound to protect her and so they become reluctant buisness partners.

Forced into one another's company for several days, their journey together transporting the stone from Cornwall to London is rife with mishaps and delays.

I did enjoy this book, it was a fun read. The plot was simple, not ridiculous or overdone. But at the same time, the entirety of this book is essentially just a play by play of a several days long journey spanning from Cornwall to London. Little happens besides traveling from one stop to another along their journey. Each stop is essentailly the same. It really stretched out far too long for me, not enough happened to warrant the length. Each stop of their journey essentially amounted to the same thing, that is until their final two stops along the way. I feel that the book could have been about 50 pages shorter. And another fifty pages shorter had they simply used their words and shared how they were feeling.

I really liked Red's character; a bit rough around the edges, but over all a sweet guy. I found Hannah a bit annoying though. She was so arrogant and quick to judge, although she imporves a lot over the course of the book. By the end I liked her character, she learned a lot along the way.

I would have given this book three stars, but I can only give it two. There were so many typos, from misspelled words and the wrong name being used to incorrect word choice and missing words. And this persisted frequently throughout the entire book. It really interrupted the flow of reading. I am shocked that this book made it through the entire editing and publishing process with this many typos remaining. I can also only give it two stars due to the historical detailing. It was not very authentic and when it was, it was mainly because it was convenient for the plot.

Overall the book was a bit disappointing, but still amusing if you're looking for something light to read.

Many thanks to BookSirens and Samantha Holt for sharing an electronic copy of this book with me for reviewing purposes. This is my honest review.

Probably closer to 2.5 than 3 but since I have started the second book I think that means I should round up.

It is a perfectly pleasant read. The characters don't go off into totally zany behaviour which I appreciate. The aunt was a bit over the top but that was mercifully short. There are several phrases that make no sense in 19th century England (eg war zone) but I was not put off too much by these either. Sticklers may wish to avoid though. While I liked the characters just fine I did not feel even remotely invested in their romance.

This is a delightful romp from one place to another, firstly to collect an ancient artifact and then to safely bring it to to her father and his team so that it can be studied.
The lady is a Bluestocking by the name of Hannah St John and her partner in this adventure is Red, an aristocrat cum smuggler. Both are absolutely delightful characters and they kept me totally enthralled and entertained with their antics and adventure. I couldn't help but love them.
There is a bit of steam but I thought it was written in good taste.
This is a page-turner of note. It had me reading into the wee hours and I am happy to recommend it.
I requested and read a free Advance Reader Copy (ARC) and my voluntary review above is unbiased.

This book was mind-numbing in the repetition
of thoughts/ themes and the stubborness of the
hero and heroine.

Stubborn and pushy Hannah sought hero Red in
a tavern b/c of his rep as a smuggler. She spent
a good portion of the book chastising Red for being
a smuggler!!!

I felt disconnected from either of these leads and
after awhile did not care what happened to them.

The premise sounded interesting: a bluestocking needs the help of a smuggler in order to retrieve an artifact that her father has claimed from the French. She doesn't realize he's also an earl. Against his better judgment, he decides to help her when it becomes clear she's doing this no matter what he says.

I wish I could say this one worked for me but it just ...didn't. I had trouble with writing, which felt overly formal and a little stuffy. I had trouble with some of the character decisions — Hannah in particular makes some poor choices at the start of the book and it feels like these are completely forgotten about less than three pages later.

I had a lot of trouble with the fact that the artifact is described in such a way that makes it clear it's a stand in for the Rosetta Stone — discovered used as building material in a fort in Egypt by French soldiers, has both hieroglyphics and ancient Greek, considered the key to potentially understanding the hieroglyphics system — and then Red is described as casually picking it up and carrying it when the carriage has to be abandoned. Along with his luggage.

Maybe it's just because I saw the Rosetta Stone right before reading this, when I got to go to the British Museum, where the size drives home the fact that the Rosetta Stone weighs approximately 1680 pounds.

There really wasn't any getting back into the story for me at that point, although I tried. I stuck it out until the end.

Some of the side characters were a little more interesting — I liked Hannah's aunt, and there's clearly a story or two behind Red's smuggling companions. I don't know if that's enough to make me give the series another shot, but your mileage may vary. The Amazon reviews certainly have a range of opinions, so if you can get it for a deal it might be worth checking out anyway.

YOU’RE THE ROGUE THAT I WANT is the first book in the Rogues of Redmere series. They will need to be read in the order of release as there is a continuation of story.

I don’t know which character I loved more – Hannah the bluestocking (a lady who prefers books and learning over fashion and flirting – a true scandal in her day) or Red, aka Guy Kingsley, the Earl of Redmere and a smuggler. I see so much of myself in Hannah. A bit bossy when those I care about need to be cared for, but a tender heart that she tries to protect to her own detriment. Plus there is her love of books more than people…probably because they are more reliable. I cheered out loud at the end, when Hannah… oh, I don’t want to give that away! Then there is Red. He is the kind of man every woman wants be with and every man wants to be. He is strong, intelligent, handsome, brave, and wealthy. He’s a titled gentleman, but secretly he’s also a smuggler. The biggest secret is why he is smuggling. Another bit I won’t give away. I’ll just leave it at you want to read this book. I know I want to continue reading this series.

I have read many wonderful stories from Samantha Holt and every one of them has delighted me. None has made me feel more like I was one of the characters, but that’s probably because a bookworm will always feel an affinity for our blue stockinged predecessors. I’m looking forward to many more stories from Ms. Holt’s proverbial pen.

It starts out with him and his gang fighting the ocean to get some things in so they can load them up and hide them. Then he meets Miss Hannah St. John, she has been sent by her father to find him. Her father right now is in France but he has an artifact he needs to be removed fast. Red says not interested until he sees Miss St. John going aboard another ship that has thieves. So he takes the commission and sends his ship to France. They come back safe but all kinds of bad things have been happening. So he decides to take her and the stone to London and the museum there. Needless to say, it does not stop there. There are a lot of surprises.
I enjoy the comradery between them. She likes to have things her way but sometimes she almost gets them killed. A good lesson there. It was easy to read and kept you on edge. The characters were wonderful, Red tries to be patient with her. But he can't wait to go back to Cornwall. Her father is not around so she does everything by herself. She makes a post carriage ride of about a week by herself. Scary, huh. I do recommend this thrilling book. But you know for yourself how amazing this writer is.
I received this ARC from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

A delightful Regency romance set in Cornwall where smuggling is the order of the day, Red discovers that the persistent woman wanting an artifact recovered from France, will not take “no” for an answer. When he turns her down, he is appalled to find her making other less savory arrangements. The end result is that Red accompanies Hannah St John from Cornwall to London to finally deliver a stone to its end resting place, but the journey does not run smoothly. Hannah is an avowed bluestocking and Red can only come to one conclusion - he really appreciates her intellect and stubbornness and even her incessant arguing. The story basically revolved around two people, but the supporting cast of characters are just as interesting an entertaining as Red and Hannah. Red is a strong hero and I really loved that Hannah had the ability to upend his way of thinking. As logical as Hannah is, she also needed Red to force her to look to the future. The book is adventurous and interesting and the plot kept moving along quickly. I previously purchased a copy of this novel, however, I also received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily post this review. This is my honest review.

An amusing story full of humor, suspense and romance!

An excellent well written story with humor and romance mixed with twist and turns along the way. The characters are well developed and keep with the period of history. The characters are created to be real people with physical and emotional flaws that you can’t help but understand, identify with and love. Once I started reading, I couldn’t put the book down. I liked the uniquely written story that contained humor while providing us a bit of romance and intrigue. It was different than any other story I have read, which is a strength in my opinion. Too often you feel that you are reading a book that is the same story line with just different characters’ name and places. This book is truly a one of a kind adventure.

Samantha Holt is a talented writer and has given us another well written book. This book is part of a series however it is a stand-a-lone with a happily ever after ending. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a short funny and suspenseful story with a touch of romance mixed in.

It is 1811 in Cornwall, England a bluestocking, smuggler, and a gentleman are the captivating characters in this story.
Red,Earl of Redmere also moonlights as a smuggler.
Hannah St John is a intriguing bluestocking, headstrong, and independent. She has to deliver an ancient stone to the British Museum in London. Hannah approaches Red to ask for his help. He wants nothing to do with this adventure. Until, Red sees a group of men he knows who have hijacked a ship to take Hannah to her destination.
Little does Hannah know, these men are up to no good. Their intentions were not honest, and Red knew it.
He truly believes this ancient stone has either put a curse on him,or he is having a streak of bad luck.
Red is beginning to fall for Hannah. He realizes he wants her in his future. He is totally mesmerized by this woman.
This was a delightful story that will keep you turning the pages. A must read. I received this book for free from ebook Discovery. I volunteered to review it and this is my honest review.

Hannah St. John is a well to do young woman who tends to work with her dad because her mother died when she was young. Hannah traveled by herself to find a smuggler to help her get an artifact into England from France. She gets a letter from her father who tells her what smuggler to hire. We then meet Red. Who turns out to be the Earl of Redmere that happens to smuggle on the side. This is an adventure and romance of these two trying to get the Egyptian Stone back to her home town.
I was shocked that we did not get to see the adventure of the guys getting the stone. It just skipped over that and the ship was suddenly back with the stone. The ending was good but it somewhat felt abrupt maybe I missed that the brother was trying court someone. They go back and forth a lot between Red and Hannah. It was interesting enough that I would read more in the series.
