Isaac Hooke is the best-selling author of the Ethan Galaal series of thriller novels, as well as the SF-themed ATLAS trilogy. When Isaac isn't writing, publishing, and blogging, he's busy cycling and taking pictures in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He has a degree in Engineering Physics.
I’m going through this series way too fast, but it’s just that kind of series. These books are not short, they’re rather long and actually continue a few pages into the next book. That is kind of unique, but since the author has already written and published the next book, it’s not too bad. I have hopped right from one book to the next before, but that’s not usual. I hate to wait so, Isaac Hooke has me for a reader just because of this series.
We’re again back with Rade Galaal, only this time, he took a heavy dose of stupid pills. I don’t know what’s with him in this book, but he can’t think straight in several parts and he sure can’t seem to fight like a MOTH is trained to fight. Even with all the time he spends in the gym on-board ship or at a duty station, he still manages to get thrown around pretty easily by some Marine woman/girl. It was pretty pathetic. Even his actions to met with the woman after having kind of rescued her, were pretty stupid. He’s an LPO (Leading Petty Officer) for Team Seven, but he sure doesn’t act like it in this book. I think the Chief and the LTC are going to take care of that situation.
The Team is now on another planet where the Marines are supposed to be putting down an insurrection by an Franco-Italian village that’s gone rogue. Turns out the village has well over fifty-thousand inhabitants, almost triple that number if you counted the bots and other support androids or “artificials”. Team Seven is attached to a Marine Company as support and find themselves staggering through the rubble of what’s left of the “village”. They had a little trouble getting down to the planet in that their ship, the Intrepid was split in half just prior to their planned jump time. Still, they managed to get the team into their “Zeus” mechs and make the jump relatively intact. Now the fun really starts.
I was not really happy with the way Rade acted in this book. He seems to not want to be the LPO. I don’t know if that’s truly his reason for acting the way he does, but it’s the way it happened. He even manages to get himself captured which was incredibly stupid for a MOTH. Fortunately, he does manage to fix that problem, but it’s not the only problem he and his Team will face. The action is pretty intense and fast paced. I don’t understand this whole mech business. It seems most of the troops are equipment with exoskeleton suits that make them stronger and faster, but doesn’t provide much protection. Meanwhile, the MOTH Team stomps around in these super protected mechanical suits and still they get ripped to shreds. I don’t know how the regular Marines can survive at all since they must fight with much less protections, yet they seem to be doing well for the most part.
So, on to the next book, “Titan”. I thought I had already “bought" this book, but I found out I hadn’t so I corrected that right away. I’m going to continue to get Issac Hooke books since he’s fast becoming my favorite author.
We see that the moth troops have been given a upgrading machines, the Zeus. But even with these the fight is not easy. Rade gets into trouble time and time again, the battle goes one way then the other.
This book was the second volume in a trilogy and I read it in one sitting, it is fast paced and begins with the resolution of a cliff-hanger that ends volume one, and ends with a cliff-hanger that you have to read volume three to learn the resolution too. Not that this creates a problem because Isaac Hooke is talented when it comes to writing fast paced action. This leads me to another thing he is good at, writing characters that are both believable and likeable, I quickly began to both like and connect with many of his characters, it was easy to forget that you were reading and be totally immersed in the story as it unfolded. I look forward to reading more of his work after finishing this trilogy, I recommend this book.
Like aliens? Giant robots? All out warfare with edge of your seat intensity? This series is for you. Alpha Platoon is back on another mission, this time with the next level mechs. The Zeus II series are bigger with heavier weapons but will even these be enough against the new threat? One that is nano based? They can replicate our brains with nanites, meaning they look like us and can act exactly like us but are not quite human. Part human, part machine but all dangerous. New threats show up as far as new creatures but could all these life forms be just hosts for something more dangerous? Character interactions are top notch and the action never stops......well, it does but just to reload.
Some addictions are better than others. For instance, I'm addicted to Isaac Hooke's stories. It could be worse. And I can stop any time I want.
So, this book continues where Hoplite left off. Rade Galaal and his team of MOTHs are fighting to recover a planet that was invaded by an enemy that can clone any human and also builds organic weapons that a mish mosh of earthly DNA mixed together into deadly forms. And robots - lots of nasty robots.
If you're into lots of action, this book should be quite enjoyable.
Well it surprised me and well what an end to the book. I suggest if you like rade and his adventures then you will love this and well the end is sorry no more just read it and enjoy
Excellent! This really picks back up the quality of the series! Well written and a lot of fun. It hits some new ground and has a number of differences from previous books in the series.
I like this series. It's well thought out, and the proofreading is good. I like futuristic, technical, military adventures. But, this is entertaining, and the characters evolve bit by bit, and it's an easy read. In fact, this is what I spent Saint Patrick's day doing.
This was nice: fast moving, lots of action - my kind of book! Sometimes you have to suspend belief and just go with the story, like when they were down in a cavern and the author says one soldier only have about 30 rounds of ammo left and most had a lot less, yet they were able to mow down a bunch of enemies in a full out assault. But, I just ignore stuff like that and enjoy the story.
"You are more than men. You are MOTHs." This, the second part of the Alien War trilogy, takes the MOTH team back to again face the diverse alien forces previously encountered in book one. But this time the forms are even stranger - and more difficult to overcome. Mr. Hooke always surprises. His ability to summon imaginative enemies and visually involve us in battle scenes whilst still maintaining suspense, together with the humanity of his protagonists, is superb. The reader is riding alongside Rade Galaal as he and his small band of elite fighters, together with their almost sentient armour, battle for survival against an unremitting foe. I, for one, can't wait for the final book with, hopefully, the solution to what these creatures really are and if they actually can be defeated. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys good writing, comaradery and banter of a close knit group of soldiers, and military science fiction generally.
New weapons, new mechs, but will it be enough? They went in search for a missing ship and found a new alien threat. Now a human settlement has been attacked and MOTH Team Seven is part of the force sent to retake the settlement and repel the invaders. But first they have to survive long enough to make it to the battlefield. Zeus, Book 2 of the Alien War Trilogy, kicks off with a bang, literally, that sets the bar very high for the rest of the book. But Mr. Hooke does not disappoint. The story is well thought out, the characters believable, and the technical details superb. The prose is sharp and clear, painting vivid pictures. It was very enjoyable to read and hard to put down. Looking forward to read the next installment.
I'm not normally a Sci-Fic reader, but I'm a character reader and Isaac Hooke really gets into character development. I read this book in less than a day. I you read The Alien War Trilogy Book 1 you're already invested in the characters and the story line. Futuristically, believably written this is a very good book and a must read for those who have read his first novels. No spoilers here though, buy the books, read the books, get into a very good author I have!
Just as good as the first book, if not better. Action packed well written, and a great story. You really get to know the characters and feel what they're feeling, and how they fight. I'm about to start reading the third book right now. If you like military sci-fi that has great action and a good story then read this trilogy.
Decent generic military sci-fi. The characterization didn't improve from the first book. If a person enjoyed Hoplite, then they should enjoy Zeus similarly. If they didn't...then expect more of the same.
