Come, Lord Jesus: The Weight of Waiting

Rate this book
Come, Lord Jesus is a companion in the waiting of Advent. It’s a quiet invitation to sit with the weight of waiting, and recount the faithfulness of God, to trace the hope of Christmas, and prepare the way for Jesus’ coming into the world, into our own hearts, into our everyday, ordinary time. With its offering of a daily reading, a reflection, prayer and one, or two reflective questions for you to contemplate, I believe this book to be a suitable, welcome “friend” to readers during the Advent season.

This book is a lovely one to use for Advent. The daily readings are not devotional length, but also not too long so as to now be read in one sitting. I like how she includes one question to ponder after reading and closes each chapter with a heartfelt prayer. I looked forward to reading this each day leading up to Christmas Day, and I like how she applies this to Christian life in general. I highlighted several sentences that touched me deeply. Add it to your list as you look for Advent reading for 2019!

Christmas is coming (again). We take and spend so much time decorating, planning, shopping, wrapping...telling ourselves (as we run around like chickens with our heads cut off) that we're caring for others. But are we preparing our hearts for the real "reason for the season": the celebration of Jesus's birthday?

This beautiful book by Kris Camealy is a tool we can use to carve a bit of time out of each day--December 1 through 25--to read scripture and a related devotional, respond to a question, and pray. I've come to really love Advent, and I couldn't be more excited to recommend Come, Lord Jesus for that quickly-approaching season.

Christmas day feels different when one nears it mindfully; it just does! I'm looking forward to reading through Come, Lord Jesus a second time this December. If you're looking for a fuller holiday experience, this year, I hope you'll give this book a try.

I bought this book for advent 2016 but I ended up reading it only during lent season. Still, it fit perfectly! Now, though I’m not following it specifically for this advent season, I’m looking over my notes and I’m pretty sure I’ll do so many times again.

It was truly an inspiring book to prepare room in our hearts any time of the year to receive and know God oi Saviour. So I recommend it whenever and in whatever stage you’re going through.

This was a powerful devotional to read during Advent. Carmealy's 25 devotions are all based around the theme of the "weight of waiting" and she does an excellent job reflecting on the waiting she has experienced in her life as she directs the reader to go deeper with Jesus.

Each devotion starts with a good section of Scripture (more than one or two verses), many of them from Isaiah, which guides her reflections which are typically about a page in length. She then offers up a question to challenge the reader to go deeper and closes with a relevant prayer.

As with many such devotionals there were a few days where I struggled to connect with Carmealy's thoughts but generally I found they hit the mark and stirred my soul. In particular there were a couple of days that really moved me. Firstly, this:

"And God knows full well that we struggle to 'be good', so He invites us to pray without ceasing, to invite Him constantly into every moment of our lives that we might manage to learn a different obedience. The kind that says, Lord I cannot do it in my own strength, help me to do it in yours." (Day 12)

and,

"Saying yes to God will always mean more than we can possibly imagine." (Day 15)

So good.

A wonderful Advent companion! Kris offers meaningful reflections, pondering questions, and heartfelt prayers. This book invites you to enter into the waiting, only to discover that Christ waits for you, too, in the manger at Bethlehem. Come, let us adore Him!

Come, Lord Jesus is a delightful book that gently encourages the reader to fully engage in the deeper meaning of the Christmas season. Although, the focus of the book is Advent, It is a gem that could be read anytime of year because seasons of waiting do not come just at the holidays. The words on the page are heartfelt and deep, birthed out of personal seasons of waiting and trusting. There is a holy hush that accompanies this book, encouraging you to rest, reflect, and find joy in the waiting, regardless of what you are waiting for. Know that the wait is not in vain .

Come, Lord Jesus is an invitation to find deeper meaning in the holiday season and take a break from the chaos and rush that so often accompanies the Christmas season.

Each daily reading includes a scripture passage, a devotional reading, a reflection question, and a prayer.

I loved using this book to help me prepare for Advent. Often God uses time to teach us, and it is the lesson that we most don't want to experience. Waiting is hard, and it is helpful to remember that God is at work even then. The darkness of Advent that leads up to the newness of Christ is the perfect time to remember to find God even there. I recommend this book to anyone looking to go deep into Advent but especially for those who, like me, have just gone through or are currently going through trying times. Because God is there too.

From the forward, by Kimberlee Conway Ireton:
"Come, Lord Jesus.
Come into this world that is broken and beaten and weary and wounded and angry. Come shelter the poor, bruised, but still oh so beautiful planet beneath the shadow of Your healing wings.
Come in the stillness of night and the garish light of noon. Come in the mountains and on the shore and by the streams and in the cities. Come to my city, my town, my neighbourhood, my house.
Come to me.
Come to my heart, my life. Walk inside. Look around with the holy love that is always in Your eyes. Do what You do when you come--turn everything upside down, turn me inside out so I can see myself clearly and run to You for shelter from my own ugliness and shame. Come lift my hanging head so I can see that You love me still. Come let me see myself reflected in Your gaze of love that makes me lovely.
Come, transform me, refine me, purify me in the fire of Your holy love. Come, fill my aching soul with Your love and gentleness and power. Come, let me live surrendered to You, surrounded by You, inspirited with You.
Come, let Your life flow through my veins.
Come, Lord Jesus."

If any of that resonated with your heart, then make a note to pick this up next year.

I didn't want to read this newest book by my friend Kris, I am currently in a season of waiting and I didn't feel the need to see how I wasn't doing the waiting thing right, and its not close to Christmas and well, you get the picture...but Kris is a dear friend and one of my favorite writers so I felt a pull to be on the team that would receive an advance copy and I can not tell you how glad I am I received that pull. This is not your average this is how you do advent book, nor is it a recipe for waiting for Christmas to arrive, this is a beautiful symphony of words that invite you to be unhurried in your waiting. Yes advent is the season that this piece is set in, but the melody here will resonate in whatever season you are blessed to read it in.
Kris has opened up an invitation for us to walk through these devotions unhurried, taking time to hear the whispers of the Holy Spirit as each page helps us to lay bare our hearts before Jesus and allow Him to bind our wandering hearts to His. I am blessed and thankful to have read this book and can't wait to read it again during the advent season. Yes, there is a weight involved with waiting but when we allow ourselves to be taken into the hope of surrender we too will whisper "Come Lord Jesus"

With the hustle and bustle of Christmas just around the corner I can feel the anxiety ramping up when I consider everything the holiday season brings. What use to be considered a holy season has turned into blinking lights, frenetic celebrations, unbridled want and peace robbing activity. From the first page, Come Lord Jesus, The Weight of Waiting invites us to breathe deeply and refocus on the reality of Christ in Christmas.

Kris Camealy’s voice offers a gentle, yet powerful message of the redemption we can find in Christ and the peace that comes with listening carefully to the message of Advent. Through careful, intentional exploration of scripture and insightful devotions Kris invites us to sit with the anticipation of Christmas and wait for more than just presents. Come Lord Jesus is a beautifully written Advent devotional that will linger in your heart long after the holiday season is over.

As a single mom, Christmas conjures images of dwindling budgets and swapping children. Of balancing everyone's needs and time. It feels like pressure and chaos as I strive to live a Pinterest worthy life so my teen children won't notice the brokenness of their family. So they can feel and have and do like the others. But, God. He sent me Come, Lord Jesus, reminding me that I only need to impress him and that the greatest beauty and peace are found in the waiting. In Him. He used Kris' words to point me toward the broken. Toward the waiting. To less doing and more being. It feels like a giant exhale as I once again begin looking forward to the season that I have always loved so much.

I hope you make this book a part of your Advent season. Kris begins each day in His Word; helps us to connect the Word to a theme or part of our lives; gives us a question for reflection; then offers a prayer on our behalf. It's beautiful.

The words in this book are deep! I was encouraged in this book to sit, be still and in this season to be more of aware of our Lord's presence, during which many times it the most busiest time of year. Kris Camely wrote Come Lord Jesus~The Weight of Waiting, for this time. , "We are a people uncomfortable with and unaccustomed to waiting. Waiting requires a measure of discipline; it demands patience, and if we will lean into that space, waiting teaches us something of our own sanctification." So what we people need to do is discipline ourselves to slow down, to whisper Come, Lord Jesus! This book is a wonderful tool to help you do just this! Slow down, take note, deepen your faith, and welcome Christ into your everyday living!

I loved reading this book in a season other than Advent as it spoke so deeply to my heart - now - in this moment. I cannot wait to read it again during Advent. The author gives much to think on as she shares with transparency and questions for us to ponder. Reading this book has been a gift to my life and will surely be a gift to each who reads it.
One of my favorite quotes from the book> "We will celebrate for eternity, a perpetual Christmas, in the very presence of Jesus."
A must have devotional for Advent!

Set up as a daily devotional for the Advent season, Kris Camealy's book is filled with beautifully-written invitations to hope, to practice joy, and to remember that no matter what we wait for, we have already received the most wonderful of blessings: Immanuel, God with us. He has come and is coming. We wait, but never, never without hope. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review, which I've given. I recommend this to anyone looking for a resource to help them slow down and think about Advent or those who are waiting--for dreams come true, for promises, for Jesus.

I don't rest well. And especially during the holidays I find myself rushing through the season and forgetting why we are celebrating in the first place. This new book by Kris Camealy is the perfect way to start any "advent" season. Whether it is Christmas, or just finding the need for an intentional pause. Filled with scripture and short encouragements...this book helps us find that place to pause for reflection. Yes this book is the perfect place to start before Christmas, but I found that even now it was relevant to my walk with God and my appreciation for all that He is in my life.

Kris Camealy addresses very well all the issues around the heavy weight you can get in a waiting period. She has chosen very fitting Bible readings and coupled with her thought provoking questions and powerful prayers, this book is a must have for anyone who is experiencing a deep longing for some clarity in their waiting period. What is great about this book is that it is great for anytime, not just at Advent.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

In the current time we're in and the social constructs we are bound by, this book was incredibly insightful and had some great perspective. We're all busy rushing, trying to accumulate possessions, wealth, skills, etc. This book is a good reminder to slow down and focus on what really matters. I love daily devotionals and often share them with my family. This is one that will be on my shelf for years to come!

I liked the straightforward simplicity of this book. I found some of the phraseology so beautifully crafted, it felt like unwrapping a series of "aha" moments as gentle lightbulbs went on, one after the other. I won't spoil it by clarifying, as I love the idea of others finding the same gems as they read. Build this into your Advent season next December, not to add to your schedule, but to slow it down.
