Brynna Beck had plans for her future, and those plans did not include working for the Finley Creek branch of the Texas State Police forever.
Nothing was going to deter her from her goals. Until a ten-year cold case resurfaces. One with massive implications for the entire Finley Creek TSP.
Brynna had loved the family that was murdered almost as much as she loved her own. And that mattered enough to have her changing her plans—just for a little while. When Brynna discovers new information, she gains the notice of men who would stop at nothing to protect themselves. Even if it meant silencing Brynna forever.
Former Texas Ranger Chance Marshall had spent ten years searching for them men who’d slaughtered his family and had found nothing. Until a woman barely old enough to drink approaches him in a dark parking garage, demanding his help.
She’ll share what she knows—if he agrees to drive her home, three states away. She has the information he needs, but she’ll only share it with her boss, Chance’s brother.
A band of killers stops them, determined to keep Brynna from sharing just what exactly she knows.
If Chance wants to stop the killers, he’ll have to keep the beautiful, maddening redhead safe…while the storm rages around them.
Calle Jaye is fun, playful, ironic, professional and sophisticated. She’s super-educated in the field of fiction and would spend most of her time walking around in “Book World” (or”eBook World”).
Does she have slight control freak tendencies? Yep. Why else would she chose to self-publish?
In her day job she gets to read romance novels. In her night job she gets to write them!
Her favorite color is bold purple. She likes rock like Kid Rock, Shinedown, and Nickelback. Add in a bit of Anastacia and Adelle, too.
She collects rocks. Watches crime dramas. Abhors Lifetime Movies and Titanic (especially Leo…) and refuses to read or write about sparkly teen vampires.
She’s married to a cop she strongly suspects is a vampire. They’ve made vampire babies, too.
They live in Indiana with their vampire relatives and their vampire dogs.

Before anyone can find true happiness, they will have to deal with the latest threats, accidents, injuries, and secrets that come their way. Cliffhanger with no real resolution. No foul language or graphic sex scenes
I liked this book in general. It was fast paced with an interesting plot line. I didn't like the main male character constantly referring to the main female character as a "girl-woman". It was used so frequently it made me want to gag. Also, even though the author attempted to make the main female character a strong woman, the actions performed by the main female character actually made her seem weak and ineffective. The book is filled with hyperbole. For these reasons, I can't give this a 5 star rating. Regardless, if you are willing to read this book while suspending your belief in what is possible, it can be a good read. A good editor is needed for this book. A big plus is no foul language or graphic sex scenes.
I like these stories, but the Finley Creek series has nothing on the PAVAD books. I have read many of Ms. Brookes's stories, and my favorite are those of the PAVAD series. I love the suspense and crime aspects and the way the characters are all somehow connected on a personal level. That's what draws me to these stories. However, when I say all of these books need a better editor and proofreader--I mean all! There has also been some formatting issues as well. Usually with each book, it gets better, but that's not what's happening here. I love romantic suspense, and Ms. Brookes's really knows how to bring it on that front. I just wish she would get someone to really look at these books during the editing process. I would give ALL of her books 5-Star ratings-- without question-- if these books went back through that process again.
Totally unexpected! The first book in this series told an exciting story from the viewpoint of Elliott and Gabby. It was intense and sweet. As this book opens it retells the story from the viewpoint of Chance and Bryanna and that's when I was surprised. With characters you love there is also the sense of light humor instead of deep emotion. As the story progresses the intensity returns, along with the twists and peaks as the drama unfolds. Every time I thought I had the right villain something would change and I'd be back on the hunt. It does leave you ready to continue the story yet still satisfied with the conclusion. Loved it !
Great book. Fnjoying the continuation o f the Family and the mystery of why a whole f family was almost killed 12 years ago
I love books that continue on, so when you finish one, you know the Story will continue on with another member of the Family. The under lying mystery that keeps flowing through the story is why was a family killed 12 years ago. All but two boys who are now men we're killed. Every book in the series brings the answer a little bit closer. Very well written and can't wait to read the rest of the series.
I found this to be quite an enjoyable read. It brought to light more of the mysteries surrounding the ten year old murders and brought Brynna her hard won happy ending with Chance (once he stopped running from everything emotional). I eagerly await the conclusion to this trilogy to find out the rest of the answers.
The second book in this series is just as good as the first, a page turner with Brynna and Chance in the lime light. They have great chemistry.... Love that Brynna needs very clear cut words....say what you mean, Chance does an amazing job. Will definitely read book three.
I really enjoyed the second book in the series. I am glad Chance and Brynna fell in love and got their HEA. They figured out who two of the men were who killed the Marshall family but there are still three to find. Can’t wait to figure out who is the mastermind although I have a suspicion.
OMG!! This is the best series yet!! Just when everything seems to be going well….BAM!!! Calle J. Brookes sends you another zinger!! It is action-packed!! The characters are really well developed and yet the head bad guy is still a secret!! I cannot wait for the next book!! Bravo Calle J. Brookes - well done!!
However because it is some time since I read book 1 I found this one a little overwhelming with too many characters and it took from a great story. BuT I am looking forward to reading book3 in this series. I loved the flawed characters & almost-impossible odds against them.
I always enjoy books written by Calle J. Brooks she is one of the authors that I have on "automatic download" This time though I definitely feel conned as the first 40% of this book was all about the previous book in this series, written from a different perspective. It certainly wasn't 40% cheaper though!!!
The 1st 40 % of the book was almost word for word repeat of the first book on the series. I truly enjoy the story but the repeat went on way too long so I didn’t enjoy this one as much. I can imagine it’s hard to not write everything as a stand alone but just just stop - make it part of the series and let me move on with the story in the next book
I could barely put the book down. So much suspense and intrigue!! I truly enjoyed it. My only issue was towards the last few chapters there were too many characters to keep track of. I found it distracting. These first two books in this series were really good to me. I feel I'll enjoy the next ones as well.
Easy reading, thoughly, engaged story lines with plot lines that mean you want to continue through the series with different characters entwined in a way that each next book feels like a chapter, leaving you wanting to carry on reading the next and then the next to build on each character and the relationships between them all.
The first half of this book was a re-write of the first book from the perspective of two other primary characters. Whole paragraphs were listed from Book 1. I only continued reading because I would like to get the whole story. I fear Book 3 will be more of the same. Doubt I will continue reading the series if this is the case.
I am reading this series back to back and just want to take a minute to say it is a must read. The suspense is killing me. A Happily Ever after happens at the wnd of each book but the mystery that started it is still ongoing and rocks. Bravo Calle! Davia
This is one of those stories you just can't put down. Make sure to read the first one to understand the back story and all the characters. But having Chance & Bryanna go through what they had and then add more on top of it. Great story.
Great follow up to the first Finley Creek story with additional clues to who the perpetrators were from the cold case they are trying to solve from a decade earlier. So much action and suspense I can hardly put this book down! Looking forward to Mel's story next!
Don't begin this series if you aren't going to finish it..it just keeps getting better with each book! The characters are believable and the suspense will grab you! Enjoy!
So many things happen with the Beck girls. A lot of surprises. Will they ever be normal again? Will they ever find their happy ever after. Read the book to see. I couldn't put it down.
I enjoyed learning about Brynna and Chance. Some of the story was repetitive from the previous book, although from a different perspective. It just made me want to skim those sections, but I didn't. I pushed through and glad I did.
Let me start by saying that Ms. Brookes has steadfastly become a favorite author of mine. The style, form, and knowledge that go into every book is nothing short of amazing. The whole series is a must read.
I liked the book but the first half was a recap of the first book. It felt like I was rereading that book. I'm not sure I'll read the 3rd book for that reason even though I would like to know how it all ends.
