Although Taiyo Matsumoto desired a career as a professional soccerplayer at first, he eventually chose an artistic profession. He gained his first success through the Comic Open contest, held by the magazine Comic Morning, which allowed him to make his professional debut. He started out with 'Straight', a comic about basketball players. Sports remain his main influence in his next comic, 'Zéro', a story about a boxer.
In 1993 Matsumoto started the 'Tekkonkinkurito' trilogy in Big Spirits magazine, which was even adapted to a theatre play. He continued his comics exploits with several short stories for the Comic Aré magazine, which are collected in the book 'Nihon no Kyodai'. Again for Big Spirits, Taiyo Matsumoto started the series 'Ping Pong' in 1996. 'Number Five' followed in 2001, published by Shogakukan.
At last... an important background story. And the background reveals a big plot. Previous 3 volumes are just for character introductions and establish setting.
This is one of those that you just can’t put a until you finish. A rare work in a classic genre for the artist, it’s nonetheless full of abstracts in how he illustrates the story. Through 3 volumes there was a thick veil of mystery surrounding the protagonist Soichiro but this volume does away with the veil by dedicating itself to telling the origin of the fox-like character. I devoured it, it was so awesome to discover more about him and that didn’t stop the creative team from moving the story forward at a nice pace.
here the character of ronin-turned-schoolteacher senou souichirou is finally established. previous to this, he functioned as a conduit to dreams; he opened up the snowy vistas of shinano, brought river dragons to life, appeared before lords with a fox-head. he was kind and learned, but a stranger. all that is now explained and the tragedy that propels the rest of the series comes to light.
