En general el libro cumple con el cometido de hacer un repaso bastante variado por el Surrealismo y sus influencias. Pero me da la sensación que quisieron abarcar demasiados artistas y obras, y todo queda a medio camino.

En paralelo estoy leyendo Historia del Arte de Gombrich y, claro, si comparamos, este libro de Robinson pierde en muchos frentes, aun teniendo en cuenta los diferentes objetivos que se plantean.

Algo que me molestó muchísimo de Surrealismo es la constante mención a obras y artistas que no aparecen entre sus páginas, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que estas ausencias también formaron parte de este movimiento artístico. No entiendo esta decisión de obligar al lector a estar haciendo lecturas paralelas.

Otra cosa que me hacía mucho ruido es que los textos que acompañan, muchas veces no hacían mención a la obra que se mostraba junto a ellos. Creo que sería preferible que el texto haga foco en los detalles de la obra y su contexto. Pero en lugar de eso, en un espacio muy acotado, se hacía mención a la vida del artista, su relación con el movimiento y sus intenciones en obras similares.

En general creo que este último punto es bastante ilustrativo del problema que le veo a este libro. En poco espacio quiere abarcar demasiadas cosas. Y eso genera que todo parezca hecho por la mitad. Si el libro tuviera otro volumen, quizá el trabajo se mostraría más completo.

Y casi olvido mencionar la terrible tipografía elegida para esta edición. Seguramente sea por un tema de escala, pero en varias oportunidades confundía las letras “a” y “o”, lo que hacía muy molesta la lectura.

Así que en definitiva, lamento mucho, porque en verdad me encanta el Surrealismo, pero este es un libro que no recomiendo para quienes quieran saber más sobre él. Solo lo recomendaría como catálogo para conocer muchos artistas en poco espacio.

While not a bad introduction, it's not an especially compelling or effectively formatted one either. I also finished the book knowing more about Surrealism but liking it less, surprised by how many of the featured pieces didn't resonate with me (perhaps because my previous explorations of Surrealism didn't venture far from Magritte and those with similar styles). There were still a good number of artistic gems and intriguing discussions in this collection though, and I'm glad it introduced me to some unfamiliar artists, especially female members of the movement such as Dorothea Tanning and Leonora Carrington.

For the most part, poorly organized. It would reference an artist and their work then bring them up in a later section in a very disconnected manner. Constantly flipping through, thinking ‘Is this who/what came up before? Why wouldn’t they put these back-to-back instead of 50 pages apart?’. Also, very little on women surrealists and mostly just highlighting glorified pedos.

-This isn’t the strongest book I’ve read on the subject.
-Good Selection, Poor Organisation: It contains a solid selection of paintings and sculptures, but the presentation is not very organised. The format (art on the right, explanation on the left) isn’t the most helpful format.
-Anecdotal Explanations: The descriptions and stories are usually anecdotes about the artist, or often about other artists connected to the creator of the artwork.
-Small Font: The text is in small print, which can be tiring on the eyes.
