Detour

Devorah Fox

Wow! DETOUR by Devorah Fox had me flipping the pages like a mad woman last night. I had to know what was going to happen with Debbie and Archie. I loved Archie right away and was caught up in the mystery he found himself in the middle of.

Debbie and Archie are visiting her Jewish family in New York. Archie is a long haul trucker and finds a way to be there for Debbie. Her sister has just had a baby and to say her parents house is total chaos is such an understatement. Her family will have you laughing out loud as you read all of their antics. All of the characters are very relatable and I'm sure you will be reminded of people you know as you read DETOUR.

DETOUR taught me many new things abut Jewish traditions as well and that is always an added bonus for me. While visiting the small town in the Hudson Valley Archie stumbles upon a plot to take out the President of the United States. The situations that Archie found himself in really hooked me right away and I found that I couldn't stop reading. I couldn't imagine how Devorah Fox was going to wrap this story up. Even though some of the things that were happening were very serious, I still found myself giggling and smiling throughout most of the book.

I'm excited to read more by Devorah Fox.

BLURB

It's February, 1993, and trucker Archie “Super Man” Harlanson is traveling to New York's Hudson Valley with misgivings. He's eager to see his girlfriend Debbie, but her elitist parents? Not so much. When he ends up at the family home, he figures the hardest part will be surviving the onslaught of relatives arriving to celebrate the birth of Debbie's nephew. CHARACTERS

I loved Archie. He makes for a great protagonist. His character, attitude and way of talking pulls the reader in and holds their attention.

All the characters in the story are well structured and three dimensional. The Stenowitz family made me laugh so much! Each character has a unique personality that makes them stand out and they all have problems that we can totally relate to. While I read the book I could actually see the hustle and bustle in the Stenowitz home.

Even the smaller characters like Bonnie and Cheryl give us these great moments that adds character to the setting and the story.

PLOT

Yes, the book comes under the 'Mystery' genre but I can assure you it doesn't stop there. The plot touches upon a variety of things. I learnt a lot about Jewish traditions and customs along with Archie as the Stenowitz family prepared for a Brit. The book shows friendship, happiness, bravery and such simple but important things through the plot. The plot also deals with Archie's time understanding the Stenowitz family and vice versa.

WRITING

The writing made me sit up and take notice. As I read the book I became more pulled in because the author makes the writing simple but beautiful. Archie's comments on the people and his surroundings are funny, realistic and honest. The choice of words are clear and non-fussy. I smiled through many parts due to the humor infused into the writing.

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THE BOOK

- The characters
- The plot
- The writing, especially the humor
- Knowing about Jewish culture

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT THE BOOK

- What's there to not like?

CONCLUSION

Go ahead and pick up the book. It's a fun and satisfying read that definitely lives up to the expectations.

A fabulous, warm and highly entertaining read.
Strong plot, larger than life characters, great narrative & dialogue, flawless pacing.
Archie is a wonderfully rounded character and the Stenowitz family are totally hilarious.

Super settings, brilliantly vivid description of the Hudson Valley.
I've never been to the Hudson Valley but Devorah Fox successfully transports me there with her writing.
Brilliant author, great novel- hopefully will be adapted for tv or movie soon.

Has to be one of the most disappointing book I have ever read. I can't believe it got published. I wanted to read it because of the geographical area it takes place. The plot is so stupid and and so poorly written it was drudgery to finish. The end was as disappointing as the beginning and middle.

Detour is a trucking thriller, following the story of Archie Harlanson, who is doing everything he can to impress his girlfriend Debbie’s parents, who are orthodox Jews, which Archie is unfamiliar with. Trying to help out as much as he can with an upcoming birth and circumcision ritual, he finds out that the President will travel to the town he is currently staying in. Soon he finds himself entangled with a secret plot to ruin the President’s career, but he finds himself juggling saving the President and saving his relationship.

Rating: 10/10 stars

Firstly, the author did a well job on the research regarding the factual information on this book. I actually learned quite a bit on Jewish customs and traditions, and the author’s knowledge of that truly added to the authenticity of the Stenowitzes. Also, there was so much trucking information that made Archie’s character a true trucker, one that I could ask a question and he would answer very intellectually. Even the places and the dates regarding the Bill Clinton visit to Hyde Park was in fact true! Devorah Fox surely did a great job of making sure the story had the right information, which made me learn a great deal about trucking and Jewish traditions and upstate New York and made the informational bits of the novel truly genuine. Unlike The DaVinci Code, which held a ton of errors about history, the Catholic Church, Christianity, paintings, architecture, and a whole lot of other things, Detour truly felt like it was fact-checked a few times and made sure everything was actually true.

Secondly, I loved Archie. I actually could relate to Archie in so many ways! He’s someone I could have a conversation with for a few hours while we eat at the diner in Hyde Park. I love relatable characters. You could feel an actual connection to that character, and that adds on to the reading experience! Archie was just an ordinary trucker, a guy who’s smart yet very humble, a man that everyone likes. I really loved his character!!! He’s such a round character who continues to change both himself and those around him through doing good. And you could feel the same struggles he had when he wanted to impress Debbie’s parents. I know I haven’t yet been at that point with a girl… but I think if when I do, I think I could make our meeting fruitful. But for those who have been at that point, you can relate to how Archie feels. Characters you can relate to will also make the book journey even better!

Recommendation: Get on trucking! (Ok, I’ll stop with the truck puns.)

I've not read anything from this author before but was happy to pick up a copy and see what she was like, and I was not disappointed! The book starts pretty clearly with Archie reviewing a new truck for a magazine. He sees himself as something of a wannabe journalist and his hope is this review will lead to big things. His motto is: If there's a road to it, I'll find it. A motto that comes in handy throughout the story. It starts a little slow, but soon picks up when Archie spots a few things that strike him as off. Intertwined with the thriller aspect, there's the love story between Archie and Debbie - will he ask? I found the book enthralling and loved it. It was well-written, the scene set beautifully and told in a way that had me turning the pages. Great read and highly recommended!
