Rate this book

Owen Burnett planned on a quiet, easygoing Christmas, hanging out with his best friend and neighbor, Gabby Michaelson. So when his mom pressures him to come home for the holidays, he tells a little white lie...that he’s spending the holidays with his new girlfriend. But when his family shows up unexpectedly, Owen pulls the best friend card and asks Gabby to play his fake girlfriend.

Gabby’s been hopelessly in love with her best friend Owen for what feels like forever, but playing his "fake" girlfriend when the entire boisterous Burnett clan visits is easier said than done. The more she tries to deny the attraction between them, the more obvious their chemistry becomes. But even though she's not the only one feeling it, putting their friendship on the line is a risk she can’t take.

More Than Friends was a pretty good read for me. For all my friends that are always asking for clean romance recommendations this book is clean. This book was a sweet lighthearted holiday read. Owen was a cute geek, that loved order, peacefulness, and neatness. Gabby was this fun loving, messy artist. They had this adorable friendship that was clearly more. I love the friends to lovers trope. I really enjoyed Owen figuring out his feelings for Gabby. For someone so smart he was a little slow on the draw lol. I liked Owen's family and I really liked Wyatt the grumpy neighbor who didn't say much but really intrigued me. If you are looking for a fun, quick Christmas romance I would recommend this book to you. Especially if you love friends to lovers stories.

3 - "The holidays are for family." Stars.

Jody Holford, begins her new Kendrick Place series with a romance built between best-friends, that initially starts out as a complete ruse.

This isn’t the first book I have read by this author, and although the elements that I found enjoyable from my previous read from here were present, in relation to characters, story-line and writing style, I found the balance a little off with Owen and Gabby’s story in respect to the amount of page time they were given versus all the secondary characters and their, what sometimes seemed overly descriptive back stories and character development.

He was the smartest man she knew and so bloody stupid she wanted to smack him.

The positives for me were certainly the likeability of them both as individuals and although totally opposite in character, the author did a really great job of highlighting this as a reason they were actually really compatible. Owen came over a little blunt and OCD in his behaviours particularly in the first half of the book, but I liked Gabby, being more arty and free with her feelings and emotions she embraced those things about him, and loved him anyway.

Owen’s family was a big plus as well, this was something I have to say I was expecting, as family played a big part in the previous book I read by Jody. Their inclusion in More Than Friends bought out the best in Owen, and gave the best Christmas to Gabby at the same time.

You’re the best fake girlfriend a guy could ever ask for.”

It was just everything else that went on in the background that I then found to be overly detracting from this couple in general. I understand that the introduction of a couple of characters were needed as the future books are likely to be about them, but I think a lot of the added information for them could possibly have been left for their books, enabling the author to deepen the backgrounds for Owen and Gabby as well as broaden the emotional connection for them as they moved from friends to lovers.

This isn’t a bad book, there is still a pretty decent story line going on here, I just think a few elements could have been removed to give more focus to the main couple. But it was sweet, Christmassy, and offered up a few hours of escapism. I am hoping that now the author has set the scene, and introduced the cast in this book, that future ones from the series will have more emphasis on the H/h in question than the secondary aspects of the plot.

Just in time to ring in the holidays with heart, family and friendship, More Than Friends was a cute and endearing contemporary romance that will put a smile on your face and a warm glow in your soul.

Owen and Gabby are best friends and co-residents in an apartment complex. When Owen lies to his family about spending Christmas with his new girlfriend to avoid spending it with them, they ALL show up at his house for the holidays. Owen begs Gabby to act as his suido girlfriend until they leave but his family is completely smitten with Gabby and Gabby with them. Worse, Gabby has been ½ in love with Owen but she fears she’ll lose her heart forever if she gets to play his girlfriend for the holidays.

More Than Friends is an absolutely heartwarming, easy and entertaining romance.

More Than Friends by Jody Holford was a sweet and enjoyable contemporary friends to more romance.

Owen and Gabby were endearing characters that entertained me with their love story. The relationship was sweet, believable, the drama was well done and the storyline held my interest from the first page until the last.

Overall, More Than Friends is a beautifully written friends to lovers story and a lovely read for the upcoming holiday season.

More Than Friends is the first in Jody Holford's Kendrick Place series and, as far as firsts go, it held just enough enjoyment for me to see the story through.

"The next week might possibly kill her, or at least demolish her heart."

Best friends-to-lovers is a trope I'm fond of, but as we all know it's one that is done an awful lot, as is the fauxmance, so for me the couple in question and their story need to bring something fresh to the table. Unfortunately Owen and Gabby generally failed on that score and despite the fact that they're endearing and have a nice chemistry, I found their story weighted on the predictable side, steadily paced and with an element thrown in to the mix in that fizzled out like a firework dropped in a bucket of water, seemingly serving no purpose other than in providing some drama to what was sadly a pretty dull storyline (and possibly to set something up for a secondary character or two down the line.)

"We can’t wreck this. Us. What we have."

Owen's family were what saved this story for me; they brought the enjoyment factor that kept me going and reminded me of the family from While You Were Sleeping which is one of my favourite films, so that was very much a positive. And whilst the emotion came thick and fast in the last 20% and I suddenly went from being non-plussed to having a tiny lump in my throat, it was unfortunately that bit too late for me to rate this any higher.

More than friends is the second book I've read by Jody Holford, and I really enjoyed this one. It was funny and sweet. Gabby and Owen are great characters. The storyline had me giggling all the way through.

Gabby has always had more than platonic feelings for Owen but, has never told him. They are great friends and live close to each other. Owen isn't good with Christmas spirit. He tries to avoid going home to see his family. He has tried all the excuses in the book and this year he's about to be caught out. Owens family are coming to him for Christmas this year, and his little white lies are about to catch up with him. He needs gabby's help. He needs a special girl who can play the part of the serious girlfriend (who he couldn't possibly leave over the holiday period).

Gabby doesn't have any family of her own and Owen is the closest friend she has. When he asks her to be his fake girlfriend she can't help but want to test the relationship water. She's always liked Owen and hopes to get over her crush. If he's a bad kisser it just wouldn't work. Hours of kissing later and some comical family moments... maybe there is more to their relationship.

4.5 stars out of 5. I really enjoyed this one and even though the story was predictable there were no cringe-worthy moments. More than friends is perfect to get you in the Christmas spirit.

An absolute sweet and romantic little gem of Christmas cheer!

I can totally see the Hallmark Channel making this one into a movie.

Owen is "Scrooge" when Christmas comes rolling around, but Gabby loves every aspect of it. They live in the same building and are the best of friends, like brother and sister, and spend most of their time together. But Owen has gotten himself into a bit of a jam and needs to ask Gabby for a huge favor. He offers a reward in return if she says yes!

You see, Owen really doesn't want to travel home for Christmas, so he makes up a huge lie and tells his mother he met "the one" and can't possibly leave her since it is the most romantic time of the year. Only the excuse backfires and his family says they will come to his place over the holidays so they can meet the woman he has fallen in love with. He desperately needs Gabby to pretend to be his "one" for the week his family is visiting.

A friends to lovers story gets me every time ;)

I love a good fake relationship with real feelings story, add in some Christmas cheer and I was excited to read More than Friends.

Owen and Gabby have been friends for a couple years, and while on the outside Gabby seems fine with being his best friend, on the inside she dies a little more every day that Owen doesn’t realize how she really feels. Still, she decides to play along with his ruse, when he asks her to pretend to be his girlfriend while his family visits for the holidays.

The relationship between Owen and Gabby was sweet, and I really enjoyed reading about them and their developing feelings.

However, other parts of the story fell a little short for me, at times there was too much other “stuff” going on, and that would have been ok if the background stories were fully developed and explained. But, I don’t think that they were – we never got any answers on the elusive Wyatt, and what about the creepy Jake, what was his deal?

Maybe they will feature in future books, but I couldn’t help that feel that these unexplained plot points and characters left this book with an unfinished feeling. ~ Tamara, 3 Stars

An oblivious geek and an artist. Friends to lovers. A holiday story. What's not to love, right? Well, let's see.

More Than Friends is my first read of Jody Holford's works and it is a start of a new series. This is a predictable story because, DUH, see what the title said! The characters are quite adorable and - while I tsked with Owen's whole fake girlfriend idea - I didn't mind it as much. But yes, I wanted to wallop him once or twice because of his obliviousness and later on for his slow reaction which I personally felt just to stretch the pages a bit more.

On Gabby's part, I like her cheerfulness when her personal story was rather sad, what's with the guilt she harboured and her non existing family. With that said, that her crush on Owen made her so fragile and quick to jump to conclusion really got me miffed.

To confuse matter was the neighbourhood disturbance and perplexing secondary characters. Honestly, for me it failed to give off mystery vibes to spice up the story. But I assume one of the purpose is to - sort of - introduce names to star on the next book. At this point though, I shall just put on my wait and see option.

To conclude, as a cute friends to lovers holidays story this book is okay. But it doesn't offer anything new on this kind of rom com.

I'm stealing this first part from a friend that typed this in a facebook message. ;)

Jody Holford is an author who knows how to write beautiful, heartfelt romance without describing every hip thrust or throaty moan. She doesn't need to add in raunchy sex scenes to relay the attraction and love that her characters feel for each other. And this applies to Owen and Gabby's story as well.

Was it a pretty predictable storyline? Yes, it was, but it's a friends-to-lovers romance where they pretend to be a couple to cover up a lie Owen tells his parents. You'd have to be clueless not to see where it's heading.

Was there a lot of drama? Nope, and I adored that. Sometimes less is more.

It let me focus on the fact that it's a Holiday romance. I was able to enjoy everything that built up with Owen and Gabby. And the crazy relationship Owen had with his family, and the one Gabby craved with them had me either cracking up laughing, or trying to hold back my tears.

Was there raw emotion screaming at me from each page? Most definitely!

Gabby's madly in love with her best friend, but she hides it. Owen's just discovering there's more to Gabby then he thought. And of course there was this ONE scene where my heart just completely shattered for Gabby. I wanted to reach into my Kindle and just hug her.

Jody has yet to disappointment me with her stories. They're so beautifully told, I get lost in them sometimes.

“He didn’t like change and she’d never known anything but. She’d learned to face demons and move forward. There were some things in life you couldn’t plan, couldn’t predict or prepare for. Gabby had used the pain of that lesson to fuel her art and her life. Because she know it only took one second for the world around you to become unrecognizable.
She pressed herself closer to Owen. Life could change in an instant, but right now, they were here. Together. Because they both wanted to be. And she’d be a fool to wreck it by wondering what if.”

3.5 stars

More Than Friends was part comfort read, part punch to the heart read, an unusual but ultimately wonderful combination as it turned out. Plus this book had pretty much ALL OF THE TROPES: Christmastime setting, opposites attract (she’s an artist/he’s a techie, she’s messy/he’s super organized, she’s outgoing while he’s more reserved), next door neighbors, fake dating, forced proximity, friends to lovers. I KNOW. It was really hard not to completely lose my shit because you can’t get a more catnip-y group of tropes that the ones I just listed.

The plot of the book was fairly straightforward (much like its title) in that Owen persuades best friend Gabby to pretend they’re boyfriend/girlfriend after he fibbed to his actor troupe family that they were in fact already a couple. Gabby agrees with great reluctance because, you guessed it, she’s already hopelessly in love with Owen and the big dunce has absolutely no clue. Cue a lot of really adorable moments courtesy of Owen’s family as well as the easy chemistry between Owen and Gabby. In between all that though, there was a great deal of surprisingly(?) deep emotions simmering just below the surface.

Now for me personally, I LOVE PINING LOVE STORIES. I know they are not for everyone but more often than not, they work for me very well. Maybe I should’ve listed that as a trope as well because there is so much aching and longing in this story, especially on Gabby’s end. Perhaps a bit too much? I only say that because Gabby’s mode of pining was quite tough to read most of the time. Her POV was basically a whole lot of internalized misery because she couldn’t bring herself to tell Owen the truth for fear that she’d lose the person who had become the one constant in her life; the heart in the storm. Owen’s own blind obtuseness to Gabby’s feelings didn’t help either, but I couldn’t he 100% mad at him for it. He was very pragmatic in his way of thinking and how he viewed situations and people, so to me it made sense that Owen wouldn’t have seen the obvious. Owen’s slow fall and final realization that he loved Gabby, had loved her all along, leading him to burst his safely constructed protection bubble to go after the woman who was every bit his perfect half and tell her that he SAW HER and LOVED HER was worth all the soft core angst it took to get there. Ahh, that final confession scene at the art museum was everything. I CRIED.

Can I say how thrilled I am to have responded so well to Jody Holford’s writing? She’ll probably not be everyone’s cup of tea, but her jammed pack emotional prose with all of its little, delicate details hit me in all the right feels. For example, I really liked how she incorporated the Christmas holiday into the overall mood of the story instead of using it as a convenient plot device. And I really loved the way she made art a part of who Gabby was as a person, and not just something she did. I think I found a new keeper author *squee*

Owen doesn't like big Christmas parties, he doesn't feel comfortable in a large group of people and he doesn't want to spend the holidays with people he doesn't know. He prefers the company of just a few loved ones, but he doesn't dare to tell his family. That's why he lets his mother know that he's spending Christmas at home with his new girlfriend instead. Owen doesn't have a girlfriend and when his parents, aunt and sister decide to surprise him and celebrate Christmas with Owen and the love of his life he needs to find a solution. Fortunately he can ask his best friend Gabby to fake they're in a relationship. Gabby doesn't have any family and she's secretly in love with Owen, so she says yes straight away.

Owen feels comfortable with Gabby and he loves everything about her. She is his best friend and he can't think of anything he wants more than to spend the holidays with her. He's surprised when there appears to be chemistry between them though, which makes the situation a lot more difficult. Will Gabby and Owen convince Owen's family they are happily in love or will the truth come to the surface and mess everything up?

More Than Friends is a sweet love story. It's clear from the start that Owen and Gabby have a special connection. They're completely at ease with each other until they have to pretend they're a couple. That complicates things between them and their easy friendship turns into something completely different. It was fascinating to see where this would lead. There are plenty of sparks between the main characters and I really liked that.

Gabby is artistic and easygoing. She's kind and attentive. Owen is a sexy nerd and he doesn't always read emotions the right way. He means well and is caring and loving, but he can also screw up spectacularly. That results in some great complex situations he needs to find his way out of, which was definitely amusing. The blundering is charming rather than insensitive. The main characters are adorable, they're exactly right for each other and I loved their closeness. Their love put a big smile on my face.

I'm a big fan of romantic Christmas stories and I read More Than Friends in one sitting. It's such a wonderful heartwarming story. Jody Holford's writing has an easy flow and her story is fun. It's exactly the way I like festive stories to be, lighthearted, endearing and entertaining. I highly recommend this amazing winter story.

May be some spoilers!

Gabby is a secretary for a college, but is really a struggling artist. She lost both parents at sixteen, one set of grandparents died when she was little and she lost the other set by the time she was 21. She has no family left. Her best friend for the last year has been Owen, whom she has been secretly in love with for a while now.

Owen is a computer geek, introvert, who avoids crowds. He tries to get out of his family’s Christmas by telling them he has met “The One” and doesn’t want to leave her. Now they’re coming to him and want to meet “The One.” Out of desperation, he turns to his best friend to help him.

Owen’s family is loud and affectionate. Hugs and laughter abound. Gabby is immediately taken with them. Owen finds himself attracted to Gabby beyond friendship. Both are scared to death of losing what they have.

These two definitely take you on a roller coaster ride. I loved the proposal. I hope we see the continuing story of these two in the next books.

Brady is the third musketeer in this group. The three of them often hang out together. The small glimpses we get of him, or hear about him, he seems like a nice guy. He owns a mechanic business. He takes over as building super for Jake when he “quits” until the building owner can get there to find a replacement.

Jake is their not so super building super. There is a subplot with this character. He is shady and lazy. Someone steals, or he misplaces, a package that belongs to him. He vandalizes the building storage unit and tries to break into the mailboxes. We are never told what is in the package.

Wyatt is the mysterious neighbor. He keeps to himself, isn’t friendly to anyone, and is actually quite a grouch. Gabby makes several attempts to be “neighborly.” We never find out who Wyatt is, but hints are made.

This is the first book in a three book series. I’m hoping to get Brady and Wyatt’s story in the next two books, as well as see some of the loose ends in this book tied up. This is my first book by this author and I look forward to the next book in the series.

I'm a sucker for a fake-relationship story, especially if it's two best friends and one has been in love with the other forever. Add in the holidays and overbearing family and by golly I might just squee from the excitement.

Owen Burnett has lied to his mother, it's got out of control and now he needs to find a fake girlfriend stat, because his family are coming to town to meet the non-existent girlfriend he is so in love with that he can't come home for Christmas. The truth is that Owen hates Christmas and he feels like the odd one out amongst his family, he's an introvert nerd and they are loud, boisterous and Christmas lovers.

Gabriella Michaelson lives in the flat next to his in a small apartment building. An aspiring artist, she's been in love with Owen for ages but she knows she is totally not his type. But it wouldn't be so bad to live the life she's dreamed of, just for a week, would it?

Forced by his well-meaning family into sharing a bedroom Owen and Gabby find they can be more than just friends.

This is a sweet, light-hearted, funny novella that hits all the right notes. Perfect holiday reading.

Jody Holford is a new author for me. When I saw the cover I knew that I wanted to read her story. I just loved it! Then I read what the story was about and it just tickled my funny bone. You know things like this will never going to work, I think that's why I couldn't wait to read it.

Pretend boyfriend & girlfriends always cause more trouble then you think. I think it has to do best intentions and all that.

This turns out to be a very nice story. Enjoyable for the holidays. I found myslef more then once laughing. I liked the characters and felt they worked well within the story. I did have a slight issue getting into the story but that changed as the story went on.

I received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review, so here goes:

I found this to be an absolutely adorable book! The characters are realistic and likeable--the kind of people I'd want to be friends with. The story is not the predictable friend-to-lover cookie-cutter narrative; it takes a bit different approach, making it a refreshing and fun read. The author's writing style pulled me in right away, and there was never a dull moment throughout. This seems to be the first in a series, and I certainly hope that's the case. I'm anxious to hopefully read the stories of some of the background characters we meet in this book. This was time very well spent!

Love friends to lovers books! Owen and Gabby are sweet together and for them to struggle to figure out they were meant to be together was wanting me to scream JUST SPEAK, AND BE HONEST!! However, the thoughts of losing your best friend, and really the only family Gabby has, is a scary risk to take when you aren't sure of the other person's feeling. Reading the navigation of these two around what they feel and what they aren't sure the other feels was a great read!

More Than Friends is a sweet, easy going Christmas romance.  Gabby and Owen are best friends.  When Owen's mother presses him about coming home for Christmas, he begs off saying he can not leave the love of his life alone at Christmas. Only there is no love of his life, as Owen isn't even dating anyone.  Low and behold, his family decides to bring the holiday to him this Christmas and wants to meet Owen's new girlfriend! With no one on his radar, Owen begs Gabby to take on the role of his fake girlfriend.

Gabby reluctantly agrees to go along with Owen's charade.  It will be extremely hard for her because she has harbored feelings for Owen for quite some time, but has kept them buried.  She doesn't want to lose her best friend, so she has never told him of her feelings.  When Owen's family arrives, it's sheer chaos and she LOVES it!  Not having any family, Gabby is overwhelmed when Owen's family easily accepts her as one of their own!  Only now, it is getting harder and harder to fake her attraction to Owen.  Owen is feeling the chemistry too!  His nerdy self can not understand why he never noticed Gabby before now-gosh was he really that stupid??  But there is so much more at stake than his growing feelings.  He knows he cannot ever live without Gabby and if his feelings aren't reciprocated, then he would be devastated! He's in a quandary that's for sure!

I enjoyed reading More Than Friends!  If you are one that enjoys the friends to lovers troupe or a sweet, clean read, than I can recommend this book! I liked Gabby and Owen together.  Being best friends, they understood each others quirks and loved them all the more. Owen was really struggling with his feelings! Gosh his lightbulb should have went off much earlier than it did! Owen's family is exactly how I expected a big, boisterous family to be! They definitely were funny! The only thing that sidelined this story is the mystery at the apartment complex.  After the lead up, that just fizzled out.  I wanted a big smackdown, but what we got wasn't even close.  That made that whole thing, to me, unnecessary, and seemed to be just filler. All and all, this was a nice, entertaining holiday read!

Owen knows his best friend, Gabriella (Gabby), very well, which means when he needs a favor, he has a back up plan just in case...pizza. As he's working up the courage to ask, and they're enjoying pizza and beer, he can't stop noticing things about her, her lips, long legs, how natural it felt to hug her. *Focus, Owen, focus.* He's never viewed Gabby as anything other than his best friend before, so what's his brain doing? He starts to explain what's bothering him, his parents, sister, and aunt visiting him, and Gabby loses it, knowing how he feels about keeping his place tidy and his almost bah-humbugedness attitude toward Christmas. However, when Owen confesses that he used meeting his dream girl, the one for him, as a reason not to go home...

Gabby knows Owen isn't dating anyone right now, so how's he going to magically present one to his fam...no, he can't be thinking what Gabby thinks he's...yep, that's what he's thinking. But she's like the complete opposite of Owen's type, there's no way any one would believe they're madly in love. In all her daydreams of Owen asking her to be his girlfriend, it was never in this context, a lie to fool his family when she'd give everything for it to be true, for him to feel about her as she does him. When he laughingly, to cover them having separate apartments, mentions blending their things to make it look like they've been too occupied being in love to decide which apartment to live in...*Heart. Floor. Splat.*

Owen already feels bad asking Gabby to lie for him, knowing how much she detests it due to the possible consequences, heartbreaking ones of which she's experienced, but he's desperate. He doesn't want to tell his family the truth and he and Gabby are already comfortable with each other due to their friendship, so spending time together will be easy. But oh yeah, umm, they'll have to be affectionate and kiss, in front of his family. Will they be able to handle that? Gabby has realized this may be her only chance to be this close to Owen, and she can see if they actually have chemistry, and if they don't her feelings for him will go back to just being friendly. Chemistry? It's explosive, for Gabby at least. Owen seems too focused on working on his plan. Unless he's just surprised by their heat and works quickly to cover his reaction. Hmm...interesting.

What happens when Owen is feeling more than a friendly affection for Gabby? Will Owen's family believe their charade? Can Gabby continue their deception when a piece of her heart breaks each time Owen does something to further the plan or says something to remind her of it? Will Owen realize how he truly feels about Gabby before it's too late? Can they go back to how things were before? Or are they destined to be so much more than friends?

One-click now and follow along as two best friends realize everything they've always wanted is already a part of their lives. On a side note, I really hope Brady, Owen and Gabby's mutual friend, Wyatt, a tenant at their apartment building, and Ophelia, Owen's sister, each get their own story as well.

Owen’s best friend was Gabby, Gabby worked as an administrative assistant at a local community college but she was also an artist. Gabby had the apartment next to Owen. Owen worked at home in a tech job. Gabby had an easy going personality and was usually happy. Gabby had been asked to do a five piece show o0n New Years Eve at the Carter Klein Gallery and that was a big thing for Gabby and helping her to get her career as an artist going. Owen had met Gabby a couple of years ago when they had both come for an apartment in the building they now lived in at that time Owen had been with perfect Vanessa his dream girl. Gabby and Owen had gotten close when Vanessa was no longer in Owen’s life. Owen hates messes and clutter and Christmas. Owen’s mom was Beth, his father was Leo his sister was Ophelia or Lia and his aunt was Patty who was seventy and now going through a divorce after four decades of marriage. All Owens family were coming to his apartment for Christmas all because Owen had lied to his mom and told her he had found the one the love of his life as he hated all the noise and strangers his parents had over on the last two Christmases he went home. Now Owens family was coming to meet the girl he loved. Gabby said Owen was the King of clean and Master of Order and laughed heartily at the thought of Owen sharing his apartment with his family. Then Owen asked Gabby to act like she was the girl and they were in love as she did know him better than anyone. Owen knew Gabby hated to lie and he had tried to tell his mother the truth but then she went on about maybe his Aunt Patty would enjoy Christmas after all. Owen knew Gabby loved his apartment and said after his family left again she could have it and Owen would move into hers if Gabby would do this for him. Gabby actually loved Owen as a man and not just as her best friend but kept all those feeling buried inside of her. Gabby loved Christmas but more often than not it reminded her she was alone, her parents had died twelve years ago by a drunk driver and she was an only child and Gabby blamed herself for their deaths. Gabby knew she was the opposite of beautiful perfect Vanessa.
I absolutely loved this story. It had a great plot and was written well. At times I laughed while reading this book and at times I choked up a tribute to the arthor. I felt like i was there. I loved Owen’s family and was sad to see how he disappointed them with his lie but they forgave as they had unconditional love for him. I also loved Gabby and how she would do anything for Owen even lie and she always defended him I just loved her personality even when she was sad everyone else came first. I liked Owen a lot even though he didn’t see things right before his eyes for a long time and he did lie .i read this story at one sitting so wasn’t long but had everything the story needed. The story quiet simply thoroughly enjoyable as far as I am concerned. So I definitely loved the characters and how they all interacted and I also loved the ins and outs of the story and I highly recommend

I received a copy of this title from NetGalley. It does not impact my review.

*What Worked for Me*

-I am a sucker for a fake relationship story and this book did it fairly well.

-I liked Owen a lot. He was sweet and smart. I found his preference for quiet and small groups really relatable. I also enjoyed his family, though they could have been developed just a little more.

-I liked the friendship between Owen and Gabby. I felt like they were really best friends before the romance started.

-There are no graphic love scenes in this book. There is one scene in the epilogue that approaches the threshold, but never really goes there. I like my romance books to stay in the sweet range and this one was definitely sweet.

*What Didn’t Work for Me*

-The thing with fake relationship stories is that the romance is a slow burn. It comes as a surprise to at least one of the characters, if not both (though usually not to the readers). So Gabby already being in love with oblivious Owen worked fine. But where it went off track for me was that in the very first chapter before the fake relationship had even started Owen was starting to notice and become attracted to Gabby. Before they even had to play fake couple in front of his family they were both already having feelings for each other and it was just too fast for me.

-There was something Gabby says early on in the story that really rubbed me the wrong way.

"And now she knew he loved her, in the safest way possible. The most platonic, means-nothing way he could. Which, in her book, was the same as not at all."

Owen viewed Gabby as his best friend. He was always there for her. He supported her all the time. He loved her. He might not have been in love with her (or didn’t know that he was), but he loved her and for her to basically say it was worthless is such an awful, selfish, immature thing. I will say, however, that that line isn’t really consistent with her character in the rest of the book, so I could still like her well enough. (Also note the quote above is taken from the ARC )

-There was a plot line involving a sleazy building manager and thefts, and an introduction of lightly developed characters that lived in the building that really didn’t have anything to do with Owen and Gabby’s story. I don’t think it did anything but set up for future books in the series.

-The end was a little over the top mushy for me. Don’t get me wrong, I want the romantic Happily Ever After, but all the proclamations got a little much and I was rolling my eyes a lot.

Overall

Overall, More Than Friends was a cute, holiday romance. While I did have a few issues with the development of the story and characters, it was quick and sweet and pretty much what I wanted it to be. I recommend it to fans of holiday romances.

Overall Rating (out of 5): 3 Stars

Best friends to lovers romance for these neighbours via a fake romance at Christmas

More Than Friends is my first read by Jody Holford so I had no idea what to expect. Overall, I really enjoyed this light hearted Christmas friends to lovers fake romance that shows all the trials and tribulations that come with transitioning from the realms of friends to lovers via a fake romance.

Owen and Gabrielle (Gabby), who tell the story through dual points of views, are two very likeable and sweet characters, who both have realistic emotions and flaws, and who you can’t help but hope will get a HEA because, despite their differences, these two friends are perfect for each other. The steady development of the relationship allows the reader to clearly see how their relationship is changing, especially for Owen who has never even considered seeing Gabby as anything other than a friend. The history of the two, having known each other as neighbours for two years, added a good foundation to the way the relationship played out and developed.

More Than Friends is a sweet, fast paced, well written, relatively lighthearted clean romance set over Christmas with a HEA with just enough drama to really draw the reader in and had a couple of plot twists you don’t necessarily see coming; there is a little mystery sub-plot thrown in for a background story although it doesn’t add much to the story. The book can be read as a true standalone with a HEA, the ending tying up Owen and Gabby’s story nicely. Despite this being my first book by this author, I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more of her work in the future.

Overall, this is a perfect, relatively light-hearted friends to lovers romance that will leave you with a smile on your face. I will be looking out for more books by this author. Definitely give this story a try!

“There isn’t anything about you I would change.”

…and isn't that exactly as it should be in love and friendship?

The answer you're looking for is a resounding YES, and that makes up one of themes of this sweet read from Jody Holford. It’s a cute premise—friends-to-lovers (when done well) is favorite trope of mine. And thankfully, here, it is done very well.

There's a lot of emotion in More Than Friends. More than I expected, as a matter of fact, which was a pleasant surprise. Although perhaps a little fluffy at times, there were moments between Gabby and Owen, Owen and his family, and even Gabby and Owen’s family, that went deeper—moments that set my heart to racing and put my tear ducts on standby. Which is, of course, a good thing.

A very good thing. The timing and pacing of these relationships just felt right; the family interference appropriately stifling and #goalsworthy and, most importantly, the connection between geeky (*swoon* I love a geek!) Owen and artsy Gabby simple and genuine. I found myself deeply invested in this couple, and enjoyed seeing the development of their friendship into a blissful, feel good romance. It was steady, believable and most definitely adorable.

This is the first book I've read of Ms. Holford’s, and the first in a new series. While it's evident from some of the secondary action that she's working on set-up for the coming stories—which I found a little distracting at times, like I was waiting for the other shoe to drop— it certainly piqued my interest, and whet my appetite for more. Which means I'll definitely be back for book two... hopefully another sweet romance from this author.

Kissing Owen, really kissing him, was better than art. It was color and chaos wrapped together in calmness. It was breathtaking and beautiful. She didn’t know one person could make her feel so much.

3.5 stars.

I love a good friends-to-lovers romance, and this one is definitely in the good category. Owen and Gabby have been friends and neighbours for a couple of years, they know each other better than anyone else, but while Owen sees Gabby as his best friend, Gabby secretly wishes for a little bit more. Then comes the inconvenient lie, which naturally leads to unexpected chemistry and the rest is fairly guessable.

But that’s most of the fun with this sort of romance. It’s not a will-they-won’t-they read, but a when-will-they-give-in that often leaves you wondering how certain characters could be so blind. Namely, Owen. He’s a smart guy when he’s working, but he’s pretty clueless elsewhere and rather prone to taking good things for granted – be that the love of his boisterous family or the loyalty of his best friend.

Despite this, he’s still a likeable character, as is Gabby. They might be complete opposites, but their relationship works well. Especially as Gabby’s cheerful nature balances out Owen’s gruffness. It was also lovely to see how Owen’s lively family drew Gabby right in and gave her the kind of Christmas she’d been missing.

However, as cute and enjoyable as all this was, there’s also a strange subplot about the building they live in, the slacker caretaker and a mysterious other resident. I know this is a new series, so some other characters needed to be introduced, but the mystery aspect was a bit distracting and didn’t really lead anywhere – except away from the romance.

On the whole, though, this was fun, with a lovely shot of Christmas magic and an enjoyable romance. True, some of the reactions towards the end were a little more predictable than I might have liked, but overall I liked this. If you like friends-to-lovers tales then it’s likely you will too. I look forward to seeing where this series heads next.

When Owen Burnett asked his best friend Gabby Michaelson to resend to be his girlfriend, to fool his family over Christmas, he didn't think too much past getting Gabby to actually agree to this mad cap scheme. All he wanted was to survive this holiday season, in a quiet manner, which is exactly the way Owen is, not like his theatrical family.

Gabby has been in love everyone with Owen forever! Even if he only thinks of her on a best friend capacity. But when he asked her to pretend to be his girlfriend for a week, just so he could survive Christmas, Gabby was torn! But ultimately Gabby's love for Owen and the desire for a real family Christmas.

But neither Gabby or Owen realized how much pretending to be in a relationship would change everything. But what will happen when the truth comes out?!

I see here writing this review in tears! Oh my goodness! This book is definitely Hallmark Christmas Movie worthy! The storyline and writing were heartbreakingly beautiful, as my tears can attest to!

I loved Owen and Gabby's characters! Seriously!! They are the definition of opposites attract!! But in a weird way, they just seemed made for each other! And they both truly stole my heart! I am just praying that Brady and Wyatt get their own books too!

I give More Than Friends 5 stars!

3.5-4 stars.

This was a super cute read.

We have Owen and Gabby, neighbors that turned best friends. And because they are such great friends, Owen asks Gabby to be his pretend girlfriend, in order to trick his family.

I loved, loved Gabby. She was such a lovely and happy person, I truly wanted to be her friend. She also has a very sad family history (it really broke my heart) so it made me happy that Owen was so open to share his family with her.

As for Own, he wasn’t a bad guy, he just needed to open his eyes regarding Gabby, and grow a pair regarding his family, lol. I actually loved his sister’s Ophelia speech to him, she nailed it!

These two were so sweet together, it made me want to slap Owen all the more for not noticing Gabby sooner.

There was also a bit of a ‘mystery’ and I loved Gabby’s interactions with Wyatt, I hope he gets a book in the series.

All in all, a really sweet story, great for this season.

Jody Holford is another new author for me. I found More Than Friends to be a great introduction to her style of writing. It seems to be the first in a series since there is much background information given concerning other people who were not one of the two main characters. I felt that the stage was being set for more books on family and friends that the reader met in More Than Friends.

Gabby and Owen are such likable characters. Even though they were complete opposites they complimented each other when they were together. Since I always enjoy a well written story about friendship that leads to love. This was a delightful find for me. In fact, it was easy to see why these two different personalities had become friends.

I can say that I would definitely read more by this author after reading More Than Friends. It is a fun Christmas read, that becomes intensely emotional at the end. Leave it to Owen.

An ARC of the book was given to me by the publisher through Net Galley.
