"After September" by Stephanie Smith is a novel that pulls at your heartstrings! It makes you cry and then you rejoice and then you cry tears of joy! I was kept turning the pages eagerly because I knew what I wanted to happened and had to see if it ended the way I wanted it to.
This story is truly a “Joy Comes In The Morning” kind of story. Yes, there are moments in the story that makes the reader think this is a sad story but then the “Joy” comes.
I wanted to step inside the book and hug David, a child in the orphanage. Maybe because I love children and I think most children that does the bad behavior that David shows a couple of times in the story just needs love.
I recommend reading this book to see how a summer vacation can change lives, yes many lives are changed because one woman decided she needed a change after becoming bitter at God because of her divorce.
I like that Stephanie Smith made Rose and Patrick real characters, but I must warn there were a couple of times that I thought the book was going to be a little much with bedroom scenes but it wasn’t, no scenes like that at all, Stephanie wrote the book to make the characters real and temptation comes to us all. I hope this doesn’t make you not read the book because it really is a clean read!.
Both Rose and Patrick and the other characters in the book had to overcome sorrows in their lives. But they learned to give them to God and He gave them joy.
I am giving "After September" by Stephanie Smith five stars.

A woman crushed by her husband's infidelity and resulting divorce finds a new beginning on the island of St. Croix.

"Just because one dream died didn't mean there wasn't another one waiting to come to life."
This tender contemporary romance takes a realistic look at people who have had traumatic breaks in their lives, and with the help of faith, find that God can bring hope and love back in ways they'd never planned. The characters were well-developed with emotions that seemed genuine and relatable. An unconventional church, like the one led by the colorful Miss May, just seemed to fit what a few broken people would be drawn to, to find a path to emotional healing, acceptance, and most importantly, real saving faith. It was a creative picture of Jeremiah 29:11, as the author shows, "God had a way of working everything out according to His will...". The story felt very complete and well-written for a novella length.
Readers who enjoy a romantic Christian contemporary with mature characters and situations, will probably like this story.

After September is a story about love and loss and learning to trust God when nothing else makes sense. I wasn't sure what to expect with this being Stephanie Smith's first novel, but I for one think she knocked it out of the park. Who hasn't had their heart broken at one time or another and struggled to trust again? The characters are real and relatable, you will find yourself rooting for thier happiness and shaking you head at some of thier decisions. After September will get it's hooks in you and you won't be able to let go until the final page. I can't wait to see what Stephanie Smith writes next!

Wonderful debut novel. I thoroughly enjoyed following Rose and Patrick's story as they each tried to put the hurts of the past behind them to see if they could find their future together. The author has combined wonderful characters, faith and romance and written a story that pulled me in from the first pages and kept me reading. I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review, and this is one that I definitely recommend. I certainly will be looking forward to reading more by this author.

After September turns out to be a very touching story. You will journey with Rose as she adjusts to life after a divorce from her politician husband by spending a summer in Saint Croix, meets a flamboyant female pastor and discovers she needs God in her life. You will also fall in love with David, a child in the local orphanage. Rose's character is well written. I recommend this contemporary romance to others. I received my copy of After September through Book Fun. This is my honest opinion of the book.

"After September" by author Stephanie Smith is a contemporary Christian romance novel. The cover is so serene and peaceful I could almost feel the sand under my feet. The book is the first one I have read by author Smith but definitely will not be the last. She has a nice writing style. Her book was well organized and easy to read. It also tugs on your heartstrings.

This is the emotionally charged story of Rose Davis, a Christian wife and mother. Her husband gives her the shocking news that he wants a divorce to marry a younger (by half) woman. Wow. Not what any wife expects or wants to hear in midlife or anytime for that matter. Their children are in college so nothing is holding them to Portland, which is great because after multiple "bumping" into her ex and his young wife, Rose has decided Portland is not where she wants to be. She takes off to St. Croix and meets Patrick, a doctor. Sparks fly and romance, quite a bit, is in the air.

The characters in this romance novel are well defined and well rounded. Rose is a hurt woman wondering why God allowed this to happen to her. Patrick is a man of strong Faith. The difference in these two is well noted. The secondary characters were well defined, too. There is a young boy that is so interesting in this book. The author writes nice, easy dialogue and plenty of it. It isn't forced or choppy.

It is a well planned romance novel. This book is all about love, second chances, and trusting a God. It is just a tad steamy so I would recommend it for adults that like contemporary Christian romance novels. It would make a wonderful book club read. I wanted to discuss it when I finished it. I rated it a 4 out of 5 stars. I was given the book by Book Fun (The Book Club Network), and this is my honest review.

After September by Stephanie Smith is a delightful Christian feel-good romance and I loved it. The book is jam packed with godly themes and has the heart of God at its core.
There is the theme of healing. There is both literal healing and a healing of hearts. "You need time to heal. I think this is the place to do that." After twenty four years of marriage Rose found herself divorced and traded in for a younger model. Hurting, she changed her whole life and headed to a tropical island for the summer, to rethink her life.
The novel shows how in her pain, Rose walked away from God. "She was still angry with God, she needed to trust everything would be all right." She walked away from church too. "Not knowing what else God expected of her, she stopped attending church altogether." Rose had equated being a Christian with a trouble free life. That just doesn't happen. God does not cause our troubles but He walks alongside us in our pain.
Stephanie Smith demonstrates the difference between religion and relationship. As Rose surrenders her hurt, her pain, her disappointments to God, so she will emerge a new creation.
Prayer is of vital importance. "Prayer was like talking to a close friend." Sometimes life is so hard that all you can do is pray and lean heavily on God.
Having fellowship with other Christians will help sustain your walk with God. Stephanie Smith shows how church doesn't have to be boring. It can be great fun and it should be great fun. Miss May is a larger than life pastor with a heart for God and a heart for people who also has the joy of the Lord by the bucketful.
After September has a wonderful orphanage which is echoing the commandment to take care of the widows and orphans. The children are all delightful. Stephanie Smith focuses in on five year old David who just tugs at the reader's heart strings.
There is the theme of loss. Rose lost her marriage. Patrick lost his wife and son. Both need a healing and restoration that only God can give.
Rose had plans for her life. All her life she had followed other people's plans for her life. Now she must take a risk and trust the unseen plans of a faithful God.
The novel has a wonderful romance bubbling away. The reader follows its course, meandering through the novel with its twists and turns.
The setting - sun, sea, sand, warmth - is perfectly drawn and a wonderful contrast to this readers cold, grey, dark English weather. I could 'feel' the warmth and 'see' the scene that Stephanie Smith painted so well.
After September was a perfectly charming read and I loved every minute of it. I greedily devoured its pages and cannot wait to read more by Stephanie Smith.
Pure escapism with God at the heart. Wonderful read.

Between the pages of this book is a captivating story about a woman who rediscovers herself. Along the way her life is changed and with it the author brings an unforgettable emotional journey of new beginnings. I loved the character development and felt like they were my friends. The children in the story are precious and yes I wanted to take them all home.

Rose needs a change of scenery after her divorce and decides to take the summer to reflect on her life. She finds herself in St. Croix with beautiful clear skies and water that is crystal clear. The place she rents is homey and relaxing. I loved the friendship between Rose and Wendy. It was refreshing to read how their friendship developed from a simple transaction of renting a place to stay to forever friends. Wendy is one of those people you instantly like.

An unexpected accident sends Rose to the clinic to see a doctor. The doctor she sees also runs the orphanage in town. It was easy to like Patrick as his character is very humble, has a heart for children and strong beliefs that he doesn't back down from. Their attraction grows and now Rose finds herself starting to really like Patrick. Can Rose let go of her hurt from the divorce and open her heart to a new relationship? Patrick has his own past that he hasn't let go of. Why does he feel guilty at times being with Rose? I loved how the author showed Patrick as a true gentleman and wouldn't give in to temptation.

Rose's idea to include the children in her project for the orphanage brings excitement to the children. It is so true that children want to feel needed and loved. Her involvement with the children brings her joy and she finds herself starting to get attached to the children. In the story you will meet a very special young boy. I can tell you that he captured my heart and I was ready to bring him home.

I loved when Rose decides to go to church and meets the pastor. The pastor is this big as life person overflowing with joy, love and compassion. There are moments in the story where Rose struggles with her faith. Will she find her way back to God? When it is time for Rose to return home, will she be able to leave? The story is very emotional at times and has a great message of forgiveness, letting go, and finding happiness. Make sure you grab your copy of this wonderful book.

I received a copy of this book from the author and Bookfun.org. This is my honest opinion.

My Thoughts:

After September is Stephanie Smith's debut book and it is great! As a huge fan of debut authors I found myself drawn to this book. I am not usually one to read pure romance books, but I am so glad I read this one. Stephanie Smith writes with authority on marriage, divorce, politics, empty nest, the Caribbean, loss, and faith. I found myself drawn into this book from the start.  I found the characters to be interesting and real. The characters lives are messy and very realistic. I enjoyed all of the characters but my favorite would have to Rose, her story was a beautiful and tragic. I found her strength and courage inspiring, especially her decision to sell her home and go to the Caribbean.  Her journey to find new love and come back into God's arms is beautiful. As someone who is married 20+ years and have 2 children I really connected with Rose. I love Stephanie Smith's style of writing, I truly found myself there with Rose, watching the story unfold. I really enjoyed this book and have found myself a new author to add to my list!! I recommend it to anyone who enjoys Christian Romance books, you will not be disappointed. I cannot wait to read more from Stephanie Smith! I give this book 4.5 STARS.

Whenever encountering a new author's works, I am always a bit leery ! Will I be able to write a review that is positive in nature? I really dislike writing negative comments! What a relief, I felt, upon starting this book!! It captured my attention right away and kept me engrossed until I had finished the last page. Stephanie Smith is to be highly commended for her debut novel!! It is an easy to read, contemporary story dealing with divorce and the emotional difficulties that follow such a life changing event.

The characters are realistically and well described in such detail that Rose immediately became a best friend with whom I could sympathize. The feelings that she was dealing with were typical of all Christians who have experienced a failure in their marriage. The handsome doctor, Patrick , had me in a bit of a swoon!! He , also , was dealing with a past full of heartache. I loved the way the author described the developing relationship, all with a Christian outlook.

The plot moved steadily with just enough unexpected surprises to keep the reader wondering about the outcome. Although this book is easy to read, it did keep me glued to my seat until I was done. Both of the characters are on the rocky road that life has dealt them. Many challenges crop up as roadblocks to a developing romance that could help heal the past. They both learn to put their trust in God as to where their lives will lead them next. Our plans are not always the same as His, and His timing may interfere with how we wish things would go. The test is, can we let go and let God????

I highly recommend this book. It is a great read, leaving behind many thoughts. Although I read it in a short time, I pondered the underlying meanings for quite some time.

Congratulations, Stephanie, on your first book! Looking forward to your next creation!

First, don't you just love the cover? So peaceful. It makes me want to go there. It reminds me of my favorite place, Mackinac Island.

The opening scene is a great one and sets the tone for Roses struggles. I love her determination to get a fresh start and where she chooses to do so (Saint Croix) is a beautiful setting.

I enjoyed Roses journey back to her faith even though when we begin it is very weak, and for good reason her world has been shaken and unfortunately gets shaken again while on the island.

With all that being said I have to be honest and I always feel bad when I check other reviews and it looks like I'm the only one that had any issues, but it's my opinion and you can take it or leave it :)

Part of my problem when I read a book is not only do I read books as I reader but I also read them as a writer. There were many things as I writer I struggled with. For example I felt there was a lot of telling me how someone felt or the point of view character making an assumption about how someone said something (ex. matter-of-factly) instead of showing me how they felt by a facial expression, or a drop in their tone of voice. I never got a deep emotion for the characters because I felt I was told too much.

There was dialogue that seemed forced and didn't make much sense to me at times, I found myself rereading things to put it together.

I don't want to belabor the point because obviously if you look at other reviews people really enjoyed the book. As always this is my opinion only and if the book sounds interesting to you I would encourage you to form your own opinion.

After September is the debut novel of Stephanie Smith and I was unprepared as to how much I was going to enjoy this one. This story shows life as gritty and sad, yet there is hope and love that can be found when we seek God’s will. Rose is a 45 year old woman, still reeling from her divorce a year ago and living with an empty nest as her two children are in college. Deciding to just do something for herself, she makes an impulsive decision to sell her home and spend the summer at Saint Croix Island. This proves to be a vacation she really needed as she meets her new best friend Wendy, David a little orphan boy whom she adores, and Patrick the widowed doctor and caretaker of the local orphanage.

All these people she meets have deep hurts that life has thrown them. As Rose begins to live again and let’s go of her past, she realizes that her life may not be as lifeless as she once thought. She and Patrick begin a relationship that quickly turns into love and begins to spin everything she knows out of control.

This book was just the story I was looking for: a little bit edgy, one that I could not put down (finished it in a day), and had me thinking about it when I wasn’t reading it. It also showed a glimpse of true faith versus generic Christianity. I look forward to more of Stephanie Smith’s stories as this one goes in my favorite’s category for 2016.

Is there a chance for love later in life, after divorce or the death of a spouse? Rose Davis is about to find out. Rose's ex-husband, now married to a woman half his age, tells Rose he is moving to Washington D.C. His dream of being involved in national politics is finally happening. But what about Rose? Making the decision she needed a change, she sold the house in Portland and rented a cottage on Saint Croix. She met the doctor of the local orphanage and her life was about to change again.

This novel is pure romance. There is no complex plot involved. There is not additional information to learn about something interesting, something I like to see in a romance. There is a steamy romance. I was a little concerned about the intensity of the romance between Rose and Patrick, the doctor. It was a little too physical for me.

The strength of this novel is highlighting the difference between a faithful Christian and a nominal one. Rose was angry with God after her divorce and distanced herself from Him. Patrick is a faithful Christian and the difference in their lives is well presented.

I recommend this novel to those who enjoy a Christian romance that is all romance and quite intense with respect to the physical attraction between the characters.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Stephanie Smith’s debut novel, After September, is one you will definitely want to pick up and add to your to be read pile. After September is the story of Rose Davis who had the perfect life until her husband told her he wants a divorce. Rose tried everything to keep him from leaving, but it didn’t work. She turns her back on God, on love, and on happiness. It wasn’t until she received a postcard from a friend on vacation, that she realized she needed a change.

Rose sells everything and moves to the Caribbean for the summer. There she puts forth the effort to get her life back, to finally be happy. Rose becomes close to Patrick, the local doctor and begins to open her heart again. The fear and doubt rear their ugly heads, Rose finally has to come closer to the One who she turned her back on.

After September is a great book one that I know I will re-read over and over. Great story line, and keeps you interested, not wanting to put the book down until its finished. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars and definitely can’t wait to read Stephanie’s next book.

AFTER SEPTEMBER BY STEPHANIE SMITH
Rose had enough-always running in to her ex and his new bride and nothing was holding her to stay now. Kids were in college so she sold the house and rented one in St. Croix to just get away from everything.
She ends up injuring her foot after waking up on the island and goes to the doctor who runs the local orphanage. They each have an attraction to one another.
Love island life and she discovers she has to find something to do. She had noticed a church on her jaunts around town on her bike-we just bought bikes-yes in our 60's and are enjoying them tremendously.
Author describes the house in such detail you can picture it yourself and want to move in. Ocean breezes was the perfect calming effect.
She had prayed to God to take away the pain and stop praying when the pains remained. She talks to Patrick, the doctor and a bit more relieved after he tells her his story and invites her to church.
Things are going well with them and then they are not. Things are not going as she had expected.
She had turned her back on God and she realizes she really needs him in her life...
I was given the book by the author via Book Fun (The Book Club Network) and this is my honest review.

“After September” is an easy-to-read contemporary novel about divorce recovery. Of course it is much more than that. You could also say it is a novel about self-discovery as well as about how the plans we make are not necessarily the plans the Lord has for us. At least that is what Rose Davis found out.

I enjoyed reading about Rose and how she pretty much burned all her bridges before purchasing a cottage in the Caribbean. Although her primary intention was to heal from a sudden and unexpected divorce, Rose soon learned that God had different plans for her life and the life of her daughter also. As is often the case, the road to God’s best for Rose was not particularly a straight and smooth one and she had to overcome some major obstacles along the way but her reward was a new and better love and a renewed and improved relationship with the Lord. What could be better?

“After September” is the first book I’ve read by Stephanie Smith but I plan to keep my eyes open for more of her work in the future.

I have just finished this book. As far as the story goes, it was a little different from the common romance, thus making it quite interesting. The characters were fairly well developed. The story line flowed quite well. It is a Christian book, but not overly preachy. It did show that your walk with God is important and showed how Rose did finally get saved or re-connected, that I wasn't sure of. What I did not like about the book was the editing. There were several places where a word was missing or incorrectly used, such as she where her should have been used for an example. The punctuation was good. Editing is important to me and thus lowers my view of this book. The second problem I had was the lady preacher. This is against my beliefs and probably a personal thing, but supported in Scripture
1 Tim. 2:12, states, "I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man" (NIV) .
You may or may not agree with me, but it did affect my view of the book. Overall, I would rate it 4 out o 5 stars.

You’ll be glad this author followed her calling to write this story! After September is very well-written and immediately engaging. Each of the characters are well developed and the story unfolds thoughtfully.
This is a genuinely lovely story, heartwarming and true-to--life. Smith’s honest handling of faith anew is refreshing – no trite phrases or simplistic answers. There is a clear Christian message but it is shared in a loving and earnest way; one that gives the reader an opportunity to consider for themselves.
Spoiler alert – you’ll likely need tissues as you finish the last several pages.
More! We need more from this great new author! Thank you, Stephanie Smith, for not letting anything detour you from creating this wonderful story.

Finally, a novel where the husband strays outside of marriage and he does not die of a horrific accident! Granted, he is not in the picture, nor the story much, but his actions do shape the heroine in a profound way. Not only that, but the hero is younger than the heroine. I must say that Stephanie is a brave soul to tackle the story, as well as a writer who kept my undivided attention throughout! Her descriptions of Saint Croix have started me dreaming of an island I want to visit!
The circumstances and instances portrayed could have been lifted from any family whose life has been affected by infidelity. A great story with the theme of forgiveness running though it.

This is a beautifully written book. It's an easy to read contemporary novel that is about finding yourself, and love, after a devastating divorce. Rose and Patrick are easy to empathize with characters. I was easily able to identify with Rose, having gone through divorce myself. Divorce is hard, but their is hope after-and that's what this book tells us. But, beyond that, it's about God's way for us being bigger, and better, than we could ever dream ourselves. Overall, I really like this and I hope you will, too!

This is a very enjoyable romance. I laughed and cried in this story. Patrick and Rose are wonderful characters. I felt good for Rose when she decided to stay in St. Croix for a while after seeing her ex-husband and his new wife. She wanted a clean break to get her feelings back together. Patrick is learning to get over the death of his family. I really enjoyed this whole story. I received a copy of this book from Celebratelit for a fair and honest opinion.

I will be completely honest, I was hesitant to read this because I thought I would struggle to relate as the characters are older than I am. When I did the math, I discovered that wasn’t quite the case: at least not by much. I can only hope that if I was ever in this state of personal duress that I would have as much fortuativeness to do as she did.

Enjoyable book, though rather predictable. No real plot twists or turns. It was nice to see a love story written about older people.
